The rupee appreciated 8 paise to close at 81.53 (provisional) against the US dollar on Friday amid a firm American currency against major rivals overseas. However, heavy selling pressure in the domestic equity markets and unabated foreign fund outflows restricted the gains in the local currency, forex traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened stronger at 81.51 to a dollar. The local unit moved in the range of 81.50 to 81.67 during the day. It finally settled at 81.53, a rise of 8 paise against the previous close of 81.61. On Wednesday, the rupee had slipped 2 paise against the US dollar. The currency markets were closed on Thursday on account of <keyword id="6416557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="republic-day" source="Orion">Republic Day</keyword>. Meanwhile, the US dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.02 per cent to 101.82 after positive macroeconomic data released by the US government on Thursday. Brent crude was trading 1.19 per cent higher at <keyword id="54123" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="usd" source="Orion">USD</keyword> 88.51 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share <keyword id="53232" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bse-sensex" source="Orion">BSE Sensex</keyword> tanked 874.16 points or 1.45 per cent to end at 59,330.90. <keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sebi" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword> has imposed a penalty totalling Rs 20 lakh on <keyword id="2951205" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-Corporate-Resources" source="Orion">Future Corporate Resources</keyword>, <keyword id="44950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kishore-Biyani" source="Orion">Kishore Biyani</keyword> and 13 others for failing to make a public announcement of an <keyword id="6694776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Open-offer" source="Orion">open offer</keyword> to the shareholders of <keyword id="17303831" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Praxis-Home-Retail" source="Orion">Praxis Home Retail</keyword>. They have been asked to pay the fine within 45 days, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) said in its order. SEBI found that Future Corporate Resources Pvt Ltd (FCRL) along with 14 entities failed to make a public announcement of an open offer following the increase in the shareholding of FCRL in Praxis. Praxis' equity shares aggregating to 30 lakh were allotted to one of its promoter entities FCRL, following the exercise of the conversion option of 3,180 compulsorily convertible debentures (CCDs) by FCRL, out of the 7,500 CCDs initially allotted to it. After exercising the conversion option, the shareholding of FCRL in Praxis rose from 47.43 per cent in the quarter ended December 2019 to 53.13 per cent, an increase of 5.71 per cent in shareholding as of February 11, 2020. "As the increase in shareholding of FCRL in Praxis post-allotment is 5.71 per cent, which is more than five per cent, FCRL along with the other Noticees (PACs) allegedly were required to make a public announcement of the open offer under...SAST (Substantial Acquisition of Shares and Takeovers) Regulations," SEBI said in its order passed on Friday. However, SEBI noted that "Noticees (15 entities) did not make a public announcement of the open offer, till date, in the instant matter" and violated the provisions of SAST norms. SAST regulations were triggered in respect of the allotment of shares and the subsequent increase in the shareholding of FCRL. The rule mandates that the acquirer and persons acting in concert with it will be jointly and severally responsible for the fulfilment of the obligation. One of the purposes of obligations in respect of an open offer is to provide an exit option to the shareholders other than the promoters of the target company, SEBI said. Accordingly, SEBI has levied a fine of Rs 10 lakh on FCRL and Rs 10 lakh together on 14 entities -- Kishore Biyani, Akar Estate and Finance, Surplus <keyword id="3777368" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="finvest" botkeyword="" source="ET" sourcekeytype="COMPANY" meta.keywordsubtype="EQ" meta.aliasname="finvest" meta.entityname="Apollo Finvest (India) Ltd." meta.entityid="10882" meta.seoname="apollo-finvest-(india)-ltd">Finvest</keyword>, Retail Trust, Anil Biyani, Ashni Kishore Biyani, Avni Biyani, Gopikishan Biyani, Laxminarayan Biyani, Rakesh Biyani, Sangita Biyani, Sunil Biyani, Vijay Biyani and Vivek Biyani. Scientists have found that <keyword id="6354493" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Children" source="Orion">children</keyword>'s immune systems, unlike those of adults, do not remember the virus and do not adapt, and so when exposed to SARS-CoV-2 again, their body still treats it as a new threat, risking reinfection. According to the study, children have largely avoided severe COVID-19 symptoms because they have a strong initial 'innate' immune reaction that quickly defeats the virus. And now, researchers led by scientists at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Australia, have uncovered what this might mean for the immune system, the study published in the journal Clinical Immunology said. "The price that children pay for being so good at getting rid of the virus in the first place is that they don't have the opportunity to develop 'adaptive' memory to protect them the second time they are exposed to the virus," said lead author Tri Phan, Co-Lead of the Precision Immunology Program at Garvan. "Because children haven't been exposed to many viruses, their immune system is still 'naive'. And because they don't develop memory T cells, they are at risk of getting sick when they become reinfected. "With each new infectious episode as they get older, there is a risk of their T cells becoming 'exhausted' and ineffective, like the T cells in older people. This is why we think it's important to vaccinate children," said Phan. The immune system has two modes. The innate immune system is the first line of defence, comprising physical barriers such as skin and mucosal surfaces that block viruses from entering. The innate immune system is also composed of cells that make chemicals to signal to other cells and ward off the viruses. The innate immune system does not distinguish between one type of virus or another. The second line of defence comprises B and T cells of the adaptive immune system. These cells have specific receptors that can recognise and distinguish different parts of a virus and generate a rapid response to neutralise or limit it. Infants start with an immune system blank slate, which has a much higher proportion of naive T cells, the researchers found. As they move through childhood into adulthood and become exposed to more viruses, the naive T cells are replaced by memory T cells that are locked in to making responses to viruses they have seen before, the study said. "Over time, as you get infections, your immune system becomes more 'educated', allowing you to make a faster immune response that's tightly matched to the viruses that have infected you before," said Philip Britton, Associate Professor and clinical lead in the study. "Children's immune systems move from relying mostly on the innate system to needing the adaptive system as a backup as they grow older and are unable to clear viruses as rapidly," said Britton. In this study, Phan, Britton and colleagues took a deep dive to investigate T cells and cellular immune responses of a small group of children and their household family contacts who had mild or no symptoms from coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection, it said. The researchers sequenced white blood cell samples to analyse T cells in children and adults at the time of acute infection and one month later, the study said. Because they studied household family contacts who were infected, researchers could control for the impact of genetic or environmental influences on the immune response, the study said. The scientists found that children had many different naive T cells to fight SARS-CoV-2 and made poor memory T cell responses to the virus after they had recovered, whereas the adults had few naive T cells but made good memory T cell responses after recovery.
