Saini, Hooda, Vinesh Phogat and the JJP's Dushyant Chautala are among the top names in the fray. A total of 1,027 candidates are contesting the election. Congress is hoping to return to power in the state after a gap of 10 years. Voting began at 7 am and will conclude at 6 pm. The counting of votes will be taken up on October 8. According to the Election Commission data, the overall poll percentage was 22.7% till 11 am. Among the districts, Ambala recorded a poll percentage of 25.50, Bhiwani 23.45, Charkhi Dadri 20.10, Faridabad 20.39, Fatehabad 24.73, Gurugram 17.05, Hisar 24.69, Jhajjar 23.48, Jind 27.20, Kaithal 22.21, Karnal 24.85, Kurukshetra 23.90, Mewat 25.65, Palwal 27.94, Panipat 22.62, Rewari 21.49, Rohtak 22.91 and Sonipat 18.84. Voting was comparatively slow in Panchkula at 13.46%. Saini, who is contesting from Ladwa in Kurukshetra, cast his vote in his native village Mirza in Ambala district's Naraingarh. Former Haryana chief minister Khattar cast his vote in Karnal, while Manu Bhaker and her parents cast their ballots in Jhajjar district's Goria village. Speaking to reporters later, he said: "The mood of the people of Haryana is clear, the BJP is going to form the government for the third time with a big mandate." Paris Olympic double-medallist Bhaker appealed to the people, especially the younger ones, to come out and cast their votes. The 22-year-old athlete voted for the first-ever time, her father Ram Kishan Bhaker said. Meanwhile, the Haryana Jan Sevak Party nominee from the Meham constituency Balraj Kundu accused former MLA Anand Singh Dangi of assaulting him and his assistant at a polling booth. Kundu, the sitting MLA from the seat, claimed that Dangi was "rattled" as he had sensed the impending defeat of his son and Congress candidate Balram Dangi. In a video message, Kundu claimed that Dangi ripped his clothes and pushed him at polling booth number 134. "My PA has been beaten up," he alleged. According to Haryana's Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal, 2,03,54,350 voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise in the election. Of the total candidates, 101 are women, while 464 are Independents. A total of 20,632 polling booths have been set up across the state, Agarwal said. Besides the BJP and the Congress, the key parties are the Aam Aadmi Party, the INLD-BSP combine and the JJP-Azad Samaj Party alliance. In the last Assembly polls in 2019, the BJP had won 40 seats, the Congress 31 and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) 10. The BJP has fielded former chief minister late Bhajan Lal's grandson Bhavya Bishnoi from Adampur in Hisar, while its nominee from Ateli in Mahendragarh is Arti Rao, whose father Rao Inderjit Singh is a Union minister. Haryana polls: 22.7% polling recorded till 11 am in Haryana assembly polls

New Delhi: As counting for Assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir began on Tuesday, and early trends showed <keyword id="19895371" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Congress" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Congress" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Congress">Congress</keyword> candidates leading in both Haryana and Jammu Kashmir, Congress workers distributed sweets and celebrated the party's likely victory with 'dhol' beats and slogans. As of 9:30 am, Congress was leading in 18 seats in Haryana and 33 seats in Jammu and Kashmir. Visuals showed Congress worker Jagdish Sharma and other party workers distributing jalebis and laddoos outside the Congress office as the counting of votes for the Haryana and Jammu Kashmir Assembly Elections was underway. Congress workers also gathered outside the party headquarters on Tuesday morning and raised slogans in support of the party on the counting day for the Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. Speaking to ANI, Congress worker Jagdish Sharma said, "This is Haryana's famous jalebi. We have brought laddus as well as jalebi. People of Haryana like jalebi a lot and if it has the taste of victory then it will be even better. Meanwhile, the counting of votes for assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana began on Tuesday at 8 am. The J-K assembly election for 90 constituencies was held over three phases on September 18, September 25 and October 1, respectively. Meanwhile, polling for the 90 seats of the Haryana Assembly ended on October 5. Chief Minister <keyword id="20928101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nayab-Singh-Saini" source="keywords">Nayab Singh Saini</keyword> on Tuesday expressed confidence in forming the government for the third time in the state adding that the BJP has worked with honesty whereas Congress did a lot of corruption. Hitting out at the opposition, the Haryana CM said that the Congress works for power while the BJP works for service. "Today is the day of counting and I am confident that as a result of the works done by the BJP government in the past ten years, we will be forming the government in Haryana for the third time. Our government will continue to serve the people of Haryana. Congress works for power, BJP works for service," the Chief Minister said to the reporters. Nayab Singh offered prayers at Shri Dakshin Mukhi Hanuman Temple located in Brahma Sarovar ahead of the counting of votes for the Haryana assembly elections. Haryana Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal stated that 93 counting centres have been set up for 90 assembly constituencies in 22 districts of the state. Two counting centres each have been set up for the Badshahpur, Gurugram, and Pataudi assembly constituencies, while one counting centre each has been established for the remaining 87 assembly constituencies, where the counting will take place. To monitor the counting process, 90 counting observers also have been appointed by the Election Commission. A meeting was held to review the counting preparedness with Deputy Commissioners/District Election Officers, to provide instructions for ensuring a well-organized counting process on October 8. Accurate information on each round of counting will be uploaded in a timely manner, a release said. Meanwhile in JK, amid speculation over possible permutations and combinations for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Tuesday expressed hope for positive outcome. "Here's wishing all my colleagues and allies the very best of luck for today. We fought the good fight and now, InshaAllah, the results will reflect that." he said. The Election Commission of India said that an overall 63.88 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the Assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The poll panel said that a voter turn of 69.69 percent was recorded in the third phase held on October 1. The security has been heightened at a counting centre in Jammu. On the day of the counting, the strong rooms will be opened in the presence of candidates, their authorized representatives, Returning Officers (ROs)/Assistant Returning Officers (AROs), and ECI observers, with videography conducted. Mobile phones will not be allowed inside the counting centres. During the process, only authorized individuals, officials, or staff will be permitted inside and around the counting centres. People and political party representatives have been requested not to crowd the counting centres and check the results at home. The results will be available on the Election Commission of India's website http://results.eic.in/ and through the Voter Helpline App. Exit polls have predicted that Congress is poised to win Haryana and that the National Conference-Congress alliance has an edge in Jammu and Kashmir. The results are likely to reflect political sentiments as parties gear up for upcoming electoral battles in Maharashtra, Jharkhand. (ANI)

Even as the day started slowly for Haryana assembly elections, the voter turnout percentage till 6 pm went up to 63.55% in Haryana. And, leaders arrived in tractors and bicycles and voters too danced a polling stations — it was an interesting day for Haryana assembly polls. The current chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar from the Bharatiya Janata Party is seeking a second term, and arrived dramatically on a bicycle. Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi took a dig at Bakhshish Singh Virk, the BJP MLA from Assandh constituency in Haryana, calling him "the most honest man in the BJP". Gandhi shared a video in which the MLA claimed that no matter which button is pressed on the EVM, the vote would go to the saffron party. On the other hand, stone pelting between supporters of the two key parties — Congress and the BJP — was reported from Nuh district in Mewat. Mewat has three Assembly constituencies -- Nuh, Ferozpur Jhirka and Punhana and about 500,000 voters. Voters at Sanghi in Haryana, which is the seat of former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, were dancing at the polling station as they waited for their leader.

 Fight for power Khattar, who became the first BJP CM in 2014, might be riding high on BJP’s latest win in the state during the Lok Sabha general elections, where the party won all 10 LS seats. But he faces strong competition from Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the two-time chief minister of the state. Hooda, amidst much hullabaloo, got his party – the Indian National Congress’ ticket – to fight for the elections. Hooda, along with his strong political background, is also the party’s Jat face in Haryana. The Jat community holds over 25% of the state’s population forming a large vote bank. The state’s regional party The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) too is counting on the Jat votes. Haryana assembly elections: 1.83 crore voters to decide the fate of the state

In today’s Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections, the average <keyword id="43677" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Voter-turnout">voter turnout</keyword> was slightly low. The voter turnout was 65% in Haryana and 55% in Maharashtra. 

	While longer queues were seen in rural areas, the voter turnout in urban areas was quite low, especially in Mumbai, where the turnout was merely 37%. The same trend has been observed in the past as well, where rural people demonstrated more enthusiasm and responsibility towards Indian democracy.<o:p></o:p>

	One must note that every major party was trying their level best to come out with flying colours in these elections. BJP banked on Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s personal charisma to seek political majority in two key states after abandoning its long-term ally, Shiv Sena. The Congress party broke off with NCP hoping that Sonia-Rahul Gandhi’s charm would help them win hearts as well as votes. And then there was Shiv Sena that asked people to bring <keyword id="53973" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Uddhav-Thackeray">Uddhav Thackeray</keyword> to power and fulfil their leader <keyword id="6371377" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bal-Thackeray">Bal Thackeray</keyword>’s last wish. <o:p></o:p>
However, it seems none of the parties could convince people enough to come out in huge numbers and cast their votes.

Average Voter Turnout In Haryana, Maharashtra Elections

<ul><li>BJP has bagged 40 seats to Congress' 31 of the total 90 seats in the state, according to the Election Commission. </li><li>Congress led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda has swept central parts like Jhajjhar, Badli, Garhi Sampla, Beri, Israna and others in the region.</li><li>BJP has 36.5% and Congress has 28.1% vote share so far, according to the Election Commission data.</li><li>Dushyant Chautala whose JJP is a splinter party from the INLD may become the kingmaker.</li></ul>The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the single largest party in Haryana with in 40 seats compared to Congress which has 31, according to the Election Commission. However, the BJP and its allies led by Manohar Lal Khattar have fallen short of the majority. The midway mark is at 45 and the winning side needs at least 46 to form the government. Embarrassingly for hte BJP, seven of its state cabinet ministers have lost their own seats. "I thank the people of Haryana for blessing us. We will continue to work with the same zeal and dedication for the state’s progress. I laud the efforts of hardworking @BJP4Haryana Karyakartas who toiled extensively and went among the people to elaborate on our development agenda," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said. On the other hand, Congress has gained hugely in vote share compared to the last assembly elections and is leading in 28 seats so far. Congress had 28.1% vote share in Haryana, according to data from Election Commission. However, there is one from India Today-Axis that has predicted a hung assembly in the state, leaving room for some anxiety in all camps. The BJP had won 47 seats in the 2014 Haryana assembly election, Congress won 15 seats, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) won 19 seats, while others won 9 seats. Factors at play in 2019 The assembly elections this year took place five months after the BJP’s clean sweep in the Parliamentary polls, just like in 2014. However, this year, there was less excitement on the voting day. The turnout fell to 65%, down from 76.54% in the previous election. In the general elections earlier this year, the BJP was able to garner a clear majority even in the state with 34% of the votes and 70% of the seats. The government in Haryana has largely mirrored the one at the Centre, either by electing the same party or an ally in the state. Going by that trend, BJP had an upper hand. However, the larger economic slowdown in the country has had a major impact on Haryana's voter sentiment. The state is one of India's largest automobile hubs and accounts for two thirds of passenger cars, 50% of tractors and 60% of motorcycles manufactured in the country, according to the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF). The infamous slowdown in car sales has led to large-scale job losses in Haryana. Districts such as Panipat, Gurugram, Faridabad, Hisar and Sonipat are home to many textile businesses, particularly, readymade cotton garments, which is one of the major exports of Haryana. The sector is dire straits due to loss of competitive edge to other countries in the region and that too, has hurt the livelihood of many people. The agrarian distress, also widespread in the country, has also shown its impact in the state. Still, the state economy has grown at a compounded annual growth rate of 12.67% over the last seven years and has led to much prosperity in many parts. This is in part due to the explosion of IT and IT-enabled services in the state, especially in the city of Gurgaon. The political balance Politically, the state’s votes were divided into Jats and Punjabi — the two dominant social segments. Over the last few years, the Punjabis have preferred the BJP. Which is why BJP got a large chunk of its seats from Punjabi-dominated areas Chandigarh, Panchkula, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal and Panipat — pretty much the entire route from Delhi to Chandigarh except Sonepat. However, the BJP has managed to consolidate the upper castes in the state into a significant vote bank which has benefited the party hugely in diluting the dominance of the Jats. 30% of the state population is from the lowest rung of the Indian society, the Dalits. They are not known to be BJP backers but as seen in the 2019 Parliamentary elections, some of the traditional caste calculus tend to break in the absence of a credible opposition. Since his election, Chief Minister Khattar has seen many controversies including an agitation by Jats demanding the benefits of the ‘Other Backward Class’, protests by many thousands of supporters of a self-styled Godman, Baba Rahim, and small-scale riots on the streets over a movie that was later released under the title of Padmavat, to name a few. Yet, a series of family feuds and corruption charges have kept opposition leaders busy firefighting most of the time and less prepared for the electoral battle. Add to that, Narendra Modi’s charm that worked wonders in the recently concluded general elections and since then, some emotive issues like the suspension of Article 370 that gave the state of Jammu and Kashmir a ‘special’ status have been largely well received by the people of the state. The opposition particularly the Congress made some gains but it wasn't enough to capitalise on BJP's lapses. Dates for India’s 17th Lok Sabha elections were announced on March 10. The Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases starting, April 11, according to the Election Commission of India. The votes will be counted on May 23 and will decide the fate of major political parties in India. Haryana has approximately 17,24,3409 voters. The voter turnout in 2014 was 71.41%. Women representation has been a blind spot for the state with the constituencies of Karnal, Rohtak, Hisar, Faridabad, Gurugram and Sonipat not having sent a woman to the Parliament even once. Faridabad, Gurugram and Sonipat seats were created only in 1977. Four most prominent parties of Haryana are the Indian National Congress (INC), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC). Lok Sabha Election 2019: Polling dates for Haryana

The <keyword id="19895782" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Election-Commission" source="keywords">Election Commission</keyword> of India (ECI) on Monday issued a notification for the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections, which will take place on <keyword id="21463279" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="May-25" source="keywords">May 25</keyword> in 57 constituencies across six states and one Union Territory. This phase will witness polling for 57 Lok Sabha seats across six states and one Union Territory, including Bihar, Haryana, Jharkhand, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and New Delhi. According to the poll body's notification, the last date for making nominations is May 6. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on May 7. ECI further stated that the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is May 9. The first phase of voting for the seven-phased Lok Sabha election was held on April 19 in 102 constituencies across 21 states and UTs with over 62 per cent voter turnout. The second phase election was concluded on April 26. In the first phase, polling was held in Arunachal Pradesh (2 seats), Assam (5), Bihar (4), Chhattisgarh (1), Madhya Pradesh (6), Maharashtra (5), Manipur (2), Meghalaya (2), Mizoram (1), Nagaland (1), Rajasthan (12), Sikkim (1), Tamil Nadu (39), Tripura (1), Uttar Pradesh (8), Uttarakhand (5), West Bengal (3), Andaman and Nicobar (1), Jammu and Kashmir (1), Lakshadweep (1) and Puducherry (1). The second phase election was concluded on April 26. This phase saw polling on 88 Lok Sabha constituencies, including all 20 seats in Kerala, 14 in Karnataka, 13 in Rajasthan, eight in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, five each in Assam and Bihar, six in Madhya Pradesh, three each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, and one each in Tripura, Manipur and Jammu and Kashmir. The third phase of Lok Sabha elections will be held on May 7. The 2024 general elections will be held in India in seven phases, from April 19 to June 1, to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. The results will be announced on June 4.
