The report highlighted a 7.01% month-on-month (MoM) decline in overall retail auto sales, falling from 20.34 lakh units in July to 18.91 lakh units in August. Despite this monthly decline in sales, the auto sector witnessed a modest 2.88% year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to August 2023. "India saw 15.9% <keyword id="22508938" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="excess-rainfall" source="keywords">excess rainfall</keyword>, with a significant surplus in key regions, disrupting auto retail performance," said a report by FADA. <h2>Decline in sales</h2>The report added that the two-wheeler (2W) segment, despite showing a 6.28% year-on-year growth, registered a 7.29% month-on-month decline. As per the report, market saturation and weather disruptions were the key factors behind the decline in two-wheeler sales. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113016216" title="August auto sales – Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and others report a decline in sales" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> In the passenger vehicle (PV) segment, there was a 4.53% YoY and 3.46% MoM decline, while the commercial vehicle (CV) segment recorded an 8.5% MoM and 6.05% YoY decline. FADA noted that weak industrial demand and weather-related challenges were major contributors to the significant drop in commercial vehicle sales. <h2>Inventory levels continue to be a challenge</h2>FADA also highlighted growing inventory challenges in the PV segment, with stock days ranging between 70-75 days, representing approximately 7.8 lakh vehicles valued at ₹77,800 crore. The report noted that these high inventory levels, combined with aggressive OEM dispatches have created cash flow pressures for dealers, impacting their profitability. "Dealers under pressure due to aggressive OEM dispatches, with dealers facing cash flow challenges and reduced profitability" the report said. <h2>FADA urges banks to tighten funding</h2>To address this, FADA has urged banks and NBFCs to tighten funding for dealers with excessive inventory. Additionally, the report emphasized the need for dealers and OEMs to recalibrate their supply strategies to avoid a potential inventory crisis. For the upcoming months, the report paints an optimistic picture with the festive season offering growth opportunities. FADA urges banks to tighten funding to dealers as rains play spoilsport in August

The outlook for <keyword id="19951618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="residential-real-estate" source="keywords">residential real estate</keyword> will be strong in the financial year (<keyword id="19965933" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FY25" source="keywords">FY25</keyword>), as the domestic residential market performed exceptionally well in FY24, said JM Financial in its estimate. As per the estimation for FY25, the market will grow by 18 per cent, with 12 per cent coming from an increase in the number of units sold and 6 per cent due to higher prices. Additionally, it expects that the supply will grow moderately, matching the demand for new purchases throughout the year. The domestic residential market performed exceptionally well in FY24, reaching its highest-ever absorption rate; pan-India absorption rose by approximately 20.1 per cent YoY (basis area absorbed), while supply increased by about 11.5 per cent YoY, as a result, <keyword id="21396778" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inventory-levels" source="keywords">inventory levels</keyword> in cities dropped to a record low of 12 months, the report mentioned. During FY 24, the sector recorded an average YoY price increase of 9.0 per cent, indicating an overall <keyword id="20995863" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-growth" source="keywords">market growth</keyword> of 29 per cent. This positive trend, according to the report, is also evident in pre-sales for listed companies, which grew 39.5 per cent YoY, indicating that market share gains continue for the listed/Tier 1 developers. "With historically low inventory levels, increasing disposable income, and limited supply expansion, the residential real estate sector is set to continue its upward trajectory," the report added. "While supply is expected to grow steadily going forward, we expect inventory levels to be maintained at healthy levels on the back of robust absorption, given the buoyant demand scenario. Additionally, while cash flows are anticipated to grow substantially, developers are likely to prioritise business development over deleveraging," JM Financial said in its outlook. FY24 saw a best-ever year for absorption across residential real estate with pan-India sales crossing a billion square feet mark, as per the report. Since FY21, pre-sales in the top 7 markets have largely been ahead of new launches, leading to a sharp reduction in inventory levels to 11 months. Among the listed players, Godrej, Prestige, Signature and Brigade delivered very strong growth in FY24, as per the report. Observing an ushering trend, the report added that real estate companies have started diversifying into new micro markets to reduce dependence on core regions and capture growth opportunities. With greater preference for branded and high-end products, Tier 1/listed developers are aiming to gain market share from the fragmented/informal segment of the industry, the report added. 'Home run' continues, FY25 to be another strong year after a robust demand in FY24: report

The Indian technology sector saw 87 deals valued at $1.4 billion in the third quarter this year, a 40 per cent surge in values over the previous quarter, a report showed on Thursday. The deal volumes, however, fell by 13 per cent in the July-September period. The rise of <keyword id="15777223" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="generative-ai" source="Orion">generative AI</keyword> is reshaping the industry, with prominent tech players actively embracing and leveraging this technology to enhance efficiency across various sectors, said the report by Grant Thornton Bharat. "With a substantial 88 per cent decrease in deal values compared to the previous year, the tech industry must consider re-evaluating investment strategies. Emphasising innovation in areas like spacetech, <keyword id="6395918" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="saas" source="Orion">SaaS</keyword>, AI, and cloud, investors can navigate the evolving landscape," said Raja Lahiri, Partner and Technology Sector Leader, Grant Thornton Bharat. In the mergers and acquisitions sector, the third quarter saw 20 deals valued at $882 million, reflecting a 9 per cent decline in volumes compared to the previous quarter but a substantial 573 per cent increase in deal values. <keyword id="103425" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mapmyindia" source="Orion">MapMyIndia</keyword> invested $1.1 million in Mappls KOGO, an AI-driven travel advisor. Agritech start-up Leads Connect secured $60.2 million from BL Agro Industries. The Proximus Group's acquisition of a majority stake in <keyword id="3519758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="route-mobile" source="Orion">Route Mobile</keyword> for $721 million marked the biggest deal in the SaaS market, said the report. In the private equity (PE) landscape, there was a marginal decline in technology deals, with 67 transactions totaling $564 million, reflecting a 14 per cent decrease in volumes and a 37 per cent decline in deal values compared to Q2 2023. Nazara Technologies secured funding from SBI mutual fund schemes for $62.2 million in the technology startup segment. Perfios received a substantial $229 million investment from Kedaara Capital, marking one of the largest B2B SaaS deals of the year. There were three IPOs in the IT sector collectively valued at $253 million in the period.

Indian tech sector sees 40% surge in deal values in Q3

The Indian government’s <keyword id="6358021" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="budget">budget</keyword> for 2014-15 is clearly an investor-friendly one with a slew of provisions and funds earmarked for start-ups in India. Also, a start-up fund worth Rs 10,000 crore is being mulled by the government. According to Finance Minister <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword>, it will be “equity, quasi-equity, soft loan and other risk capital for start-ups.” 
 This is encouraging news although angel investors and <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword>ists (VCs) have kept the start-up ecosystem thriving in India till date. Venture capital is an investment in the form of shares or a later stock option in potentially high-risk businesses. The beneficiary companies are usually small or medium-sized firms, requiring seed or early-stage funding for innovation and development of technology or products with high growth potential. High annual returns ranging from 25-75% are expected on such investments. 
 
Venture capital can be injected in different stages of a start-up lifecycle: 
1. In the initial development stage as ‘seed capital’ for converting an idea into a commercially viable entity. 
2. Implementation or ‘start-up capital’ when all is ready to commence production. 
3. Additional capital to overcome manufacturing teething problems. 
4. Establishment capital to facilitate rapid expansion of an established company. 
 
Venture capital is a long-term investment and involves active participation and help from the investor for the development of the company. Often, the presence of the VC investor/s gives the company commercial and financial clout. 
 
Indian venture capital market and investments Venture capitalism in India began in 1986 with the start of the economic liberalisation. In 1988, the Indian government formalised venture capital by issuing a set of guidelines. Initially, venture capital or VC was limited to subsidiaries set up <keyword id="67881" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IDBI">IDBI</keyword>, <keyword id="42456" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="ICICI">ICICI</keyword> and the IFC, and focused on large industrial concerns. 
 
But the turning point came when the well-established start-ups by Indians in the Silicon Valley convinced foreign investors that India had the talent and the scope for economic development and growth. Over the years, more and more private investors from India and abroad have entered the Indian venture capital market. 
 
In the early stages, venture capital investments were mainly in the manufacturing sector. However, with changing trends and increased liberalisation, companies in consumer services and consumer retail space emerged as top contenders for VC funding, attracting almost 50% of total VC investments. Other key industries included IT and IT-related services, software development, telecommunications, electronics, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, banking and finance/insurance, public sector disinvestment, media and entertainment, and education. 
 
A completely new field that is attracting venture capital is agriculture. This has been fuelled by the realisation that food security is a vital, long-term necessity. Studies suggest that in future, for every Rs 100 increase in GDP, Rs 41 will be spent on food. 
 
At the recently held Global AgInvesting Conference, data released indicated that agro businesses would provide better returns of about 11%, compared to 3-5% yield from bonds and equities. 
 
Agriculture could well become the new Mecca for venture capital investments. Leading VC firms such as Venture Dairy, Anterra Capital (a spin-off of Rabobank’s proprietary venture capital investment team), SAEF (Small Enterprise Assistance Funds) and Rabo Equity Advisors’ India Agribusiness Fund have already entered this market. 
 
Promoting VC funding in India 
Since 1988, ICICI has played a prominent role in promoting venture capital investments in India and currently manages funds over $2 billion. 
 
In fact, India recorded a 13% increase in the amount invested against the global rise of 2%. At $45.8 million, India posted an all-time-high median value at the profitable stage in 2013, the highest value ever seen in any market across all of the development stages since 2007. 
 
Early-stage funding has gone down and more funds have been diverted to later, more profitable stages or spread out in multilevel funding, indicating that investors are cautious about high risks. However, top players such as Sequoia Capital, Rabobank, Google Venture, Seed Venture Fund and World Bank’s IFC are investing in India. IFC is the leading investor here, with $1.4 billion. 
 
Most VC investors, both local and global, have leveraged the Mauritius Treaty route to invest in India because tax is only payable in the country of the investor’s residence. The SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) can work towards further simplifying the investment procedures and offer attractive IPO and M&amp;A exit ratios. 
 
However, the crucial challenge will be the development of responsible financial and management skills in the invested companies, and understanding the local conditions by foreign investors. A positive factor is that India has a large pool of English-speaking, trained and skilled manpower. 
 
Another trigger to invest in India is that both China and India are the top two growing global economies. The new pro-business Indian government has also inspired confidence and foreign investment worth Rs 17,000 crore has already been made. So the prospects look rosy for the growth of venture capital in India.
