Pink is the shade of climate change with mountains and lakes changing colour across the globe

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-storm-earth-northern-southern-lights-auroras-how-to-see-2023-4">saw the northern lights</a> just outside San Francisco on Friday during a rare geomagnetic storm.</li><li>I was surprised that my phone camera captured a vibrant pink explosion, while I saw a dull red glow.</li></ul><p>I saw the northern lights glowing in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bright-lights-california-sky-mystify-onlookers-space-debris-2023-3">California skies</a> last weekend — but just barely.</p><p>I couldn't miss the historic opportunity to see the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-aurora-northern-lights-rare-appearance-south-solar-storm-2023-3">aurora borealis, the dancing, colorful lights</a> that usually only shimmer in Arctic skies.</p><p>A giant cluster of sunspots and a series of solar eruptions caused an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-northern-lights-dazzle-night-sky-across-the-us-europe-2024-5">extreme geomagnetic storm</a> on Friday — the first one since 2003.</p><p>Over the weekend, this <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northern-lights-sky-friday-us-solar-winds-giant-hole-sun-2023-3">solar activity brought the northern lights south</a>, as far as Arkansas, and gave us a rare chance to see it in California.</p><p>So late Friday night, my friends and I drove to Mount Tamalpais State Park, about 40 minutes north of San Francisco. It was the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/darkest-skies-by-state-watch-space-events-stargazing">darkest spot</a> on a hill within an hour's drive, according to an online light pollution <a target="_blank" href="https://www.lightpollutionmap.info/#zoom=8.36&amp;lat=37.8958&amp;lon=-122.1586&amp;state=eyJiYXNlbWFwIjoiTGF5ZXJCaW5nUm9hZCIsIm92ZXJsYXkiOiJ3YV8yMDE1Iiwib3ZlcmxheWNvbG9yIjpmYWxzZSwib3ZlcmxheW9wYWNpdHkiOjYwLCJmZWF0dXJlc29wYWNpdHkiOjg1fQ==">map</a> we checked.</p><p>As soon as we got out of the car, two of us pointed at a patch of sky above the parking lot trees and said "Is that it?"</p><p>The night sky had a faint reddish tinge. The color was so subtle that we thought we might be imagining it. So as we walked up the path toward the top of the hill, we paused to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northern-lights-artic-circle-trip-findland-tips-3-2023">take some photos</a>. That's when we knew we were seeing the northern lights.</p><div type="image" title="northern lights night sky with pink and purple glow above silhouette of treetops" height="1500" width="2000" msid="110097658" hostid="261" sizebytes="115744"></div><p>With the naked eye, we wouldn't have noticed the aurora if we didn't know it was there. But the photos we took with our iPhones made it seem like the sky was an explosion of bright pink.</p><h2 id="b2d2f1ed-81aa-4684-baae-88eb05c46608">Why photos make the northern lights look more colorful than they are</h2><div type="image" title="pink starry night sky with silhouette of hillside and trees in the foreground" height="1500" width="2000" msid="110097662" hostid="261" sizebytes="89084"></div><p id="b2d2f1ed-81aa-4684-baae-88eb05c46608">The aurora occurs when activity on the sun sends a flood of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/second-giant-coronal-hole-sun-solar-winds-space-weather-aurora-2023-3">solar material washing over Earth</a>.</p><p id="b2d2f1ed-81aa-4684-baae-88eb05c46608">This supercharged solar wind is packed with electrically charged particles and magnetic fields. Our planet's own magnetic field channels all that solar stuff toward the North and South poles, where the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northern-lights-aurora-origin-electrons-waves-2021-6">electrons heat up the gases in our atmosphere</a> and cause them to glow like fluorescent lightbulbs.</p><p id="b2d2f1ed-81aa-4684-baae-88eb05c46608"><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/severe-g4-solar-storm-heading-toward-earth-heres-what-to-know-2024-5">The solar storm on Friday</a> bombarded the planet's magnetic field so much that its particles flooded further south, past the Arctic, to create the northern lights I saw.</p><div type="image" title="night sky with gradation from white city lights up to blue to pink to black above a dark tree hill silhouette" height="4032" width="3024" msid="110097666" hostid="261" sizebytes="212078"></div><p>But cameras are more sensitive to the whole range of light than our eyes are, especially in the dark, when <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/science-of-the-white-and-gold-blue-and-black-dress-illusion-2015-2">our eyes tend to tune out color</a>.</p><p>For example, my iPhone has an automatic long-exposure mode for dark settings. When I take a photo at night, it takes multiple snapshots for three seconds, then stitches them together, allowing the camera to capture even more light, which is why my aurora photos look more spectacular than what I was seeing.</p><p>It also matters where you are. I was near a major source of light pollution — the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-san-francisco-singapore-happier-safer-cleaner-2024-2">city of San Francisco</a> — which probably drowned out a lot of the aurora.</p><div type="image" title="night sky with pink and blue glow above city lights peeking above the dark silhouette of a hill with a person on it looking out" height="1500" width="2000" msid="110097670" hostid="261" sizebytes="39074"></div><p>Compare that to the below picture that astrophotographer Dan Bartlett took about 200 miles east of me, in June Lake, California, near Yosemite. He was at roughly the same latitude but under much darker skies.</p><div type="image" title="northern lights pink glow with spikes and green rim along the horizon in the night sky above a tree-lined lake" height="998" width="1331" msid="110097673" hostid="261" sizebytes="130684"></div><p>While he told me he spotted spikes and waves changing second by second with his naked eye, all I could see was a diffuse glow.</p><h2 id="1b9fa936-cc66-41ed-ad5f-7f356a3ea346">Cameras might also lie to you about the aurora's colors</h2><p>Another pitfall of seeing the aurora through a phone is that the colors aren't always true.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/astronaut-photo-aurora-from-international-space-station-2021-9">color of an aurora</a> indicates its altitude, as well as the type of molecules in the atmosphere that are creating it. Green, for example, usually comes from oxygen atoms at lower altitudes in the atmosphere. Pink or red can indicate high-altitude oxygen or nitrogen at very low altitudes.</p><p>My phone also picked up a field of purple in some images, which could indicate low-altitude nitrogen — but that could have been a trick of the pixels.</p><p>"Obviously, screens do not always reproduce the natural colours reliably," Maria Walach, a space plasma physicist who researches auroras at Lancaster University, told BI in an email. "Additionally, you can get all sorts of colours from mixing and different viewing angles, which sometimes makes it tricky to tell."</p><p>And, of course, photos you see online could always be edited after the fact.</p><p>"Don't be misled. I mean, the camera does its own processing but you know that you could go in and change that processing level to your tastes," Bartlett said. "You could saturate the colors and make it grotesque, you could do anything you want with it."</p><h2 id="2b1a3fbe-67c1-4e90-a893-43e76e0c07e3">Go see the aurora, just know it might be faint</h2><p>This rare event isn't over. More eruptions on the sun are sending electromagnetic material our way, meaning much of the northern US could get the aurora again on Monday night.</p><p>There may be even more opportunities this year. After all, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-more-active-solar-storms-auroras-power-outages-grounded-flights-2023-2">the sun is close to the maximum activity level</a> that it reaches every 11 years, meaning there will probably be more solar eruptions that bring the aurora to unusual latitudes. </p><p>I think it's absolutely worth seeing, even if it's faint like mine was. I'm glad I stayed out until 3 a.m. to catch it.</p><p>But if you're in the middle of the US or at a similar latitude elsewhere on Earth, don't expect to see the bright pink and green glow that photos all over social media are showing. They can be a bit misleading.</p>

Tiffany is the fourth child of the former US president, whom he shares with ex-wife Marla Maples. Maples and Trump, 76, were <a href="https://pagesix.com/2022/11/09/bride-tiffany-trump-flipping-out-as-hurricane-heads-toward-florida/">involved in planning the wedding</a>, according to Page Six. </p><p>Boulos, a businessman who grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, and Tiffany got engaged in January 2021, the day before Donald left office. </p><h2>Wedding festivities began last weekend with Tiffany's bridal shower</h2><p>On Sunday, Tiffany's half-sister Ivanka, 41, shared a behind-the-scenes photo carousel from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cko1nacOfr5/?hl=en">the bridal shower</a> on Instagram. <a href="https://pagesix.com/2022/11/07/tiffany-trump-celebrates-bridal-shower-ahead-of-her-wedding/">Page Six reported</a> that Ivanka threw the event for the bride-to-be. </p><p>The first image showed Ivanka and Lara Lea Trump, who is married to Eric Trump, wearing coordinating blue floral gowns as they stood alongside Tiffany, who was wearing a lacy bridal dress with puffed sleeves.</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-11408899/Maples-helps-daughter-Tiffany-Trump-minute-plans-Mar-Lago-wedding.html">Daily Mail</a>, Lara Lea shared an Instagram story on the day saying that she and Ivanka did not plan on wearing similar gowns. </p><p>Captioning her Instagram, which has more than 200,000 likes as of Saturday, Ivanka wrote: "Back in Florida, celebrating my beautiful brilliant and kind sister @tiffanytrump at her bridal shower."</p><p>Ivanka later posed with her husband <a href="https://www.insider.com/jared-kushner-thyroid-cancer-surgery-symptoms-treatment-2022-7">Jared Kushner</a> and their three children in an <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck17FIJuCC5/?hl=en">Instagram photo</a> Friday as the family continued celebrations into the weekend.</p><p>"Ready to celebrate," Ivanka wrote in the caption, tagging Tiffany and Michael in the post.</p><p>Kimberly Guilfoyle, the girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr., also shared a series of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckw0hywuUSM/?hl=en">behind-the-scenes Instagram photographs</a> from the bridal shower, which, according to the location tag, took place in Jupiter, Florida. </p><p>Her post shows that some of the attendees, who included Maples and Melania Trump, wore floral crowns to the bridal shower, which appeared to also have taken place by a lake. </p><p>"A beautiful bridal shower for my sweetheart and sister @tiffanytrump," Guilfoyle captioned the post. "Such a joy to celebrate you with family and friends looking forward to your amazing wedding to @michaelboulos this weekend and your lifetime of happiness together!"</p><h2>Marla Maples wrote Tiffany letters the day before the wedding</h2><p>On Friday, Maples, 59, shared a glimpse at how she was preparing for her only child's wedding day. Taking <a href="https://www.instagram.com/itsmarlamaples/?hl=en">to Instagram</a>, the actor posted a story of her writing letters to Tiffany in a pink notebook. Maples added the song "I Say a Little Prayer," by Dionne Warwick to the post. </p><p>The notebook itself was personalized with the words "Letters to Tiffany" on the front. "Once I held you in my arms," she wrote in the caption. "Now as I watch you move forward with love know you'll always be my baby, now and beyond your wedding day."</p><p>Speaking of Maples, <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/109329189044274670">Donald shared a shout-out</a> to his ex-wife on Truth Social, his own social-media app, on Saturday while announcing Tiffany and Boulos' wedding. </p><p>"My wonderful daughter Tiffany will be getting Married today at Mar-a-Lago," he wrote. "She and Michael are a beautiful couple who will be very happy together. A big thank you and congratulations to Tiffany's mother, Marla, on the bringing up of a really great daughter!"</p><h2>Donald and Tiffany practiced walking down the aisle at rehearsals</h2><h2><div type="image" title="Tiffany Trump with Donald Trump on Friday at Mar-a-Lago." height="879" width="1172" msid="95474326" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>Photographs issued by Getty Images showed the former US president and his daughter appearing to practice walking down the aisle together at Mar-a-Lago on Friday.</p><p>Tiffany was seen wearing a blue-and-white floral midi dress while Donald wore a blue suit and white collared shirt. <ul class="summary-list"><li>15-year-old Abie Martinez is one of the 7,450 children and teens across the US who've developed MIS-C during the pandemic. </li><li>MIS-C often develops 2-6 weeks after a COVID-19 infection, or exposure to COVID-19.</li></ul><p>In January of 2021, Abie Martinez's body was in trouble.</p><p>What started out as <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/pink-eye/symptoms-causes/syc-20376355#:~:text=Pink%20eye%20(conjunctivitis)%20is%20the,your%20eyelashes%20during%20the%20night.">red eyes, reminiscent of a pink eye</a> infection, quickly progressed over the course of a few days to include high fever, diarrhea, vomiting, terrible back and leg pain, and an arm rash.</p><p>"My body just wasn't working," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boy-describes-mis-c-symptoms-affecting-kids-post-covid-2021-8">he said</a>.</p><p>Soon, Martinez was being helicoptered in to <a href="https://intermountainhealthcare.org/primary-childrens/about">Intermountain Primary Children's</a> Hospital in Salt Lake City. Upon arrival, doctors discovered he was in a dangerous <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/immunology-and-microbiology/tissue-perfusion#:~:text=Shock%20occurs%20as%20a%20result,cellular%20injury%20and%20ultimately%20cellular">medical shock</a>, unable to properly oxygenate his vital organs. His kidneys were injured, and his heart was too weak to squeeze normally. </p><p>It was all indicative of <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mis/mis-c.html">multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children</a>, MIS-C, prompted by a mild COVID-19 infection he'd had over a month earlier. He'd spend five days in the hospital, and several more months recovering at home, with a doctor's note to excuse him from gym, and a daily baby aspirin prescription to prevent clotting.  </p><p>Today, he says he's feeling much better and recovering well, though it is still difficult to run like he used to. </p><p>"If I do a lot, I just tire myself out and then if I try and push myself more, it pains my chest," he said.</p><p>But he's off the aspirin, attending school dances, has been medically cleared to exercise again, and he even got a new job — a physical one — detailing cars at the car wash down the street from his house. </p><p>"We're really fortunate," Martinez's mom, Cendy Marquez, said. "We're just happy that he was able to pull out of it."</p><h2>There's no way to predict who gets MIS-C</h2><div type="image" title="Abie Martinez dancing with a little girl at a wedding" height="2420" width="1816" msid="90018638" hostid="261"></div><p>Over the course of the pandemic, more than 7,450 kids like Martinez have developed MIS-C, according to the latest data from <a href="https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#mis-national-surveillance">the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>. Sixty three of those children have died. Their cases are not linked to severe COVID-19. MIS-C can — and often does — happen even after an entirely asymptomatic infection of an <a href="https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/148/5/e2021052273/181338/Deaths-in-Children-and-Adolescents-Associated-With">otherwise healthy young person</a>. </p><p>"We don't know yet what the underlying mechanisms are that lead to development of MIS-C," Martinez's doctor, pediatric cardiologist Dr. Dongngan Truong, told Insider. "For some reason, in some kids, they have this hyper-inflammatory response to COVID-19 infection."</p><p>MIS-C doesn't happen right away, either. Often, it pops up anywhere from two to six weeks after the COVID-19 infection is over. And, Truong says, "it is not unusual" for kids who have MIS-C to be completely unaware they ever had the virus in the first place. </p><p>"Oftentimes, they say they didn't know they had it at all or, you know, fever for one day, mild symptoms," she said.</p><p>Though the mechanisms of MIS-C (and its <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mis/mis-a.html">rarer adult companion, MIS-A</a>) aren't well understood yet, there are some trends doctors have noticed. MIS-C is more common in boys (61% of cases), and an outsize proportion of the patients are Black (31%) and Latino (26%), numbers which, at least partially, reflect racial disparities in disease burden of COVID-19 across the US.</p><div type="image" title="dr truong looking at heart images" height="2160" width="3840" msid="90018641" hostid="261"></div><p>To better understand the syndrome, Truong and her colleagues are <a href="https://covidmusicstudy.com/about-the-study/">heading up a longitudinal study</a> of more than 1,200 children and teens across North America who've had MIS-C during the pandemic, comparing heart images, looking for trends. Martinez is part of the 5-year study, he's one of about 70 MIS-C patients enrolled from Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital.</p><p>"The question is, is there some sort of underlying genetic susceptibility?" Truong said. </p><p>Lately, she is seeing more new MIS-C cases as a result of the recent Omicron wave of infections. The volume of children coming in with MIS-C isn't nearly as high as what it was last winter, when Martinez was hospitalized, but there has been a noticeable uptick in cases.</p><p>"The idea of 'let's just get it, and get it over with' does make me nervous," the doctor said of people getting COVID-19.</p><h2>Vaccination after MIS-C </h2><div type="image" title="abie martinez getting vaccinated" height="1364" width="1816" msid="90018643" hostid="261"></div><p>Currently, the CDC recommends that children who've had MIS-C <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/clinical-considerations/covid-19-vaccines-us.html#Contraindications">wait at least 90 days to get vaccinated</a> against COVID-19, and ensure that they've achieved a full cardiac recovery. After that, they may choose to get vaccinated, a decision often made in consultation with their doctor. </p><p>Truong said among her patients, there's a "big spread" of feelings about COVID-19 vaccination. Some parents and kids who've had MIS-C are "eager" to get the vaccine, while others "express worry."</p><p>In Martinez's case, his mom said he could make the final decision about whether or not he wanted to get vaccinated. </p><p>"Getting the vaccine, it doesn't prevent you from getting COVID, but it's like a lower risk of getting it," Martinez said.</p><p>He spoke with his doctor about the vaccine, and about how <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-00328-8">getting vaccinated further lowers your odds of getting sick again</a>, even if you've been previously infected. For him, that risk-benefit analysis made COVID-19 vaccination a no brainer.</p><p>Even though "it's not a guaranteed thing," he said, if vaccination could reduce his odds of "going through that again," he was in. </p><p>"He said, 'mom, I would much rather do the vaccine,'" Marquez remembered him saying. </p><p>Doctors don't know yet whether getting MIS-C once makes you more susceptible to getting it again. But, there is limited evidence from recent studies in both <a href="https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2022/02/mis-c-rare-covid-vaccinated-teens-study-finds">the US</a> and <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2787495">France</a> that <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7102e1.htm#:~:text=Vaccine%20effectiveness%20against%20multisystem%20inflammatory,%3D%2078%25%E2%80%9397%25).">vaccines can help prevent</a> more cases of MIS-C — especially the most severe cases, requiring life support and hospitalization. </p><p>"I, personally, have not seen any MIS-C in kids who had been considered completely vaccinated," Truong said.</p><p>That doesn't mean it can't happen, but a <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanchi/article/PIIS2352-4642(22)00028-1/fulltext">recent study</a> suggests the <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanchi/article/PIIS2352-4642(22)00061-X/fulltext">odds are vanishingly small</a>, perhaps 1 in every 3 million — or less. </p><p>In Martinez's case, "my arm was sore for like a day or two" after the vaccine, and then he was back to normal — working, going to school, and just generally getting "back to what I was" before COVID and subsequent MIS-C, he said. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6360584" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="smoke">Smoke</keyword> from <keyword id="394841" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="wildfires">wildfires</keyword> on the US <keyword id="44875" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="West-coast">West Coast</keyword> has traveled thousands of miles east.</li><li>The smoke has turned skies hazy from Washington, DC, to Portland, Maine – even the Netherlands.</li><li>Large fires are more likely to send smoke high enough to reach the jet stream, which carries it from east to west.</li></ul><p>On Tuesday, residents of the Midwest and the <keyword id="127185" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="East-coast">East Coast</keyword> woke up to milky skies and pinkish suns. </p><p>At first glance, some of the formations look a bit like clouds – but they're not. At least, not ordinary ones. Instead, they're hazy formations high in the atmosphere, generated by smoke from thousands of miles away. </p><p>California, Oregon, and Washington have all been battling a <a href="https://www.insider.com/nasa-wildfire-images-from-space-california-oregon-2020-9">record-breaking wildfires</a>. More than 100 fires have burned over 4.5 million acres across the three states over the last month. California is fighting the biggest fire ever recorded in state history: <a href="https://www.insider.com/west-coast-wildfires-map-of-biggest-fires-color-coded-2020-9">the August Complex Fire</a>. At nearly 800,000 acres, it's almost twice the size of the previous record-holder, the 459,000-acre Mendocino Complex Fire from 2018.</p><p>Now, smoke from those fires is drifting across the continent. Some smoke is catching a ride on the polar jet stream, <a href="https://www.weather.gov/jetstream/jet#:~:text=Jet%20streams%20are%20relatively%20narrow,between%20hot%20and%20cold%20air.">which flows west to east</a> at an average of about 110 miles per hour.</p><div type="image" title="nws gif smoke" height="428" width="600" msid="78137937" hostid="261"></div><p>Wildfire smoke has found its way into skies as far as Washington, DC, New York City, and Portland, Maine. It's even been spotted in Ontario, Canada, where resident Juan Moreno-Cruz <a href="https://twitter.com/jmorenocruz/status/1305834247542972416">captured a hazy pink sunrise</a> on Tuesday morning. </p><div type="image" title="juan" height="1536" width="2048" msid="78137938" hostid="261"></div><p>Smoke particles have traveled as far as the Netherlands, more than 5,000 miles away. Meteorologist Geert Jan van Oldenborgh captured the greyish tint on skies above the Reeuwijk Lakes on September 11 and <a href="https://twitter.com/gjvoldenborgh/status/1304478828476198912">later confirmed its presence via satellite imagery.</a></p><div type="image" title="west coast wildfires smoke netherlandss" height="3024" width="4032" msid="78137940" hostid="261"></div><p>"Made worse by climate change," van Oldenborgh wrote in a tweet accompanying the images. </p><h2>Smoke is polluting the atmosphere across the continent</h2><p>In addition to the visible haze, the wildfire smoke is spreading an invisible, deadly gas across the atmosphere above North America: carbon monoxide. NASA satellite readings over the last week show that CO concentrations over the continent are <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/nasa-monitors-carbon-monoxide-from-california-wildfires">more than 10 times higher</a> than normal. Red patches indicate higher concentrations of harmful particles.</p><h2>Climate change is making fires bigger, which means smoke can travel farther</h2><p>When the smoke rises high enough, it can enter the <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/weather/reference/jet-stream/#:~:text=Jet%20streams%20are%20fast%2Dmoving,that%20circulate%20above%20the%20Earth.&amp;text=Jet%20streams%20travel%20in%20the,(5%20to%209%20miles).es).">tropopause</a> – the area between the troposphere and the stratosphere, where jet streams travel.</p><p>The bigger the wildfire, the more likely it is to can generate pyrocumulonimbus clouds: enormous thunderclouds of smoke and ash that spiral high into the sky, meeting the path of a jetstream and sometimes making it into the stratosphere. Aside from volcanic eruptions, pyrocumulonimbus clouds are the primary way <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41612-018-0039-3#Abs1">vast quantities of smoke get released</a> high in the atmosphere.</p><p>"It acts like a giant chimney, taking smoke from the ground and injecting it to the altitude of a jet aircraft," David Peterson, a meteorologist with the Naval Research Laboratory in Monterey, <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/The-fire-breathing-dragon-of-clouds-15557949.php">told the San Francisco Chronicle</a>. </p><p>The largest pyrocumulonimbus events ever recorded worldwide have all occurred in the past three years, <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/The-fire-breathing-dragon-of-clouds-15557949.php">according to the San Francisco Chronicle</a>. That's because large, hot fires are more likely to produce pyrocumulonimbus clouds, and climate change leads to <a href="https://www.insider.com/california-fires-biggest-in-history-august-complex-fire-2020-9">bigger and more intense wildfires</a>.</p><p>As temperatures rise, more water evaporates from the soil, drying out the land. Snow also melts sooner, and spring <keyword id="6359992" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="weather">weather</keyword> arrives earlier. Early snowmelt and high temperatures deprive vegetation of water, drying it out in time for wildfire season. </p><p>In the US, the five years in which the most acreage burned due to wildfires have all been since 2005, <a href="https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/IF10244.pdf">according to the Congressional Research Service</a>. </p><p>Australia, meanwhile, saw one of its most destructive <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/01/world/australia/fires.html">fire seasons in history</a> in December and January, and those produced an unusually high number of pyrocumulonimbus clouds. Smoke from Australia's fires circumnavigated the globe, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2020/from-smoke-going-round-the-world-to-aerosol-levels-nasa-observes-australias-bushfires/">according to NASA</a>.</p>

What was once an afternoon away from the office to break bread and participate in team bonding activities (trust fall, anyone?), corporate retreats have since ballooned into multi-day offsite extravaganzas.&#xa0;</p><p>While corporate retreats can be impactful in helping to incentivize employees and providing face time with colleagues and key company leaders, they can also end up becoming raucous, substance-infused parties. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heres-the-latest-wework-news-2019-6">The recent downfall of WeWork</a> exemplifies how the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employees-inside-adam-neumanns-wework-reveal-a-wild-culture-2019-9">corporate retreat can run amok,</a> becoming incubators for wild behavior, heavy drinking, and exorbitant company spending. And while it's an extreme example, WeWork isn't the only tech startup to plan such a lavish off-site retreat for employees.&#xa0;</p><h2>Castles, palaces, and sex tents</h2><p>Though company outings vary broadly in scope and can prove integral to team building and employee growth, WeWork employees told Business Insider last month that the company's annual "Summer Camp" was brimming with sex and drugs. "You could hear people audibly having sex in their tents all day and night. People peeing all over the place, and pulling down their pants and defecating in between the tents because they are so drunk they can't even make it to the bathroom."</p><p>Corporate retreats have a storied history in American society, but only in the past few decades have they grown quite as elaborate&#xa0;as WeWork's. While tech companies like Microsoft have been sending employees on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-satya-nadella-company-culture-2017-9">annual mountain retreats</a> for decades, by the early 2000s brands had started booking out European palaces, hosting thousands of professionals for "incentive trips," <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/18/business/corporate-retreat-moat-optional.html">the New York Times reported</a>.</p><p>"Built as fortresses to repel attackers, castles now have the welcome mat out for a different sort of invader, as American companies and associations rent them - as well as palaces and manor houses - for meetings, conferences, gala dinners, product introductions and incentive programs to reward or motivate employees or outside salespeople," Sharon McDonnell wrote in her <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/18/business/corporate-retreat-moat-optional.html">2005 article on the trend</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>Glitzy corporate retreats took a bit of a backseat during and immediately after the recession, with the exception of companies like AIG, <a href="https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/oct/08/aig-followed-bailout-with-440000-retreat/">which spent $440,000</a> on an employee spa retreat in 2008, shortly after receiving a bailout from the federal government. But now offsite outings are making a major comeback, both for better and for worse.&#xa0;</p><h2>Glamping at the 'big Glossier wedding'</h2><p>While not all retreats skew so deviant, that doesn't mean they're not equally as lavish. For companies like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/glossier">Glossier</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/rent-the-runway">Rent the Runway</a>, activities like "glamping" (a portmanteau of glamour and camping) have become top-billed events.&#xa0;</p><p>At Glossier, employees are invited to "Camp Glossier," an annual event that in recent years has "sent shock waves across social media" with its "epic games of human bubble soccer" and personalized swimsuits, Lindsay Talbot <a href="https://www.domino.com/content/glossier-emily-weiss-interview/">wrote in Domino in 2017</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>Held in idyllic locations like the Berkshires and Cedar Lakes Estate in upstate New York, employees lounge in pool floaties, make friendship bracelets, and propel across the water in millennial pink Glossier-branded canoes.</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>The event has even inspired merchandise and <a href="https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5GRVVH6VfZNmZWq897HMnI?si=sCytk0ZsSg6dd6M02nWTNA">Spotify playlists</a>&#xa0;for the brand's most devoted followers.</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>There are more than 400 posts tagged with the hashtag #CampGlossier on Instagram, a testament to the brand's DNA, which was founded largely thanks to the power of social-media word of mouth. Building upon Camp Glossier, founder <a href="https://qz.com/1086808/how-microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-disrupted-the-corporate-retreat/">Emily Weiss told Quartz in 2016</a> that she had formerly toyed with the idea of incentivizing top performing staff members with a "Glossier Coachella." Glossier declined Business Insider's request for comment.</p><p>Meanwhile, Rent the Runway recently held a "Camp RTR" event of its own, though the company does not have a designated annual retreat, according to a company spokesperson. Startups like Glossier and Rent the Runway love throwing Instagrammable 'summer camps' for employees - but WeWork's version has become a cautionary tale

The group's flagship event, once called "the Super Bowl of linguistics," aims to crown the word or phrase that defined the year and saw widespread or innovative usage.</span></p><p><span>Of course, fake news has existed long before 2017. In fact, the term was a finalist in last year's Word of the Year voting, defined as "disinformation or falsehoods presented as real news." However, Trump's repeated usage of the term in 2017 actually gave way to a new meaning: "actual news that is claimed to be untrue," according to the American Dialect Society.</span></p><p><span>It was that redefinition of "fake news" that pushed it over the top this time around.</span></p><p><span>"When President Trump latched on to 'fake news' early in 2017, he often used it as a rhetorical bludgeon to disparage any news report that he happened to disagree with," Ben Zimmer, chair of the American Dialect Society's New Words Committee, <a href="https://www.americandialect.org/fake-news-is-2017-american-dialect-society-word-of-the-year">said in a statement</a>.</span></p><p><span>"That obscured the earlier use of 'fake news' for misinformation or disinformation spread online, as was seen on social media during the 2016 presidential campaign."</span></p><p><span>He added: "Trump's version of 'fake news' became a catchphrase among the president's supporters, seeking to expose biases in mainstream media. But it also developed more ironic uses, and it spread to speakers of all ages as a sarcastic putdown."</span></p><p><span>In another Trump-inspired vote, "alternative facts" was named the Euphemism of the Year, in honor of Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chuck-todd-kellyanne-conway-sean-spicer-press-briefing-falsehoods-2017-1">infamous coinage</a> from a January television appearance. Meanwhile, </span><span>"covfefe" was voted the WTF Word of the Year after the enigmatic typo <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-covfefe-tweet-2017-5">sent Twitter into a frenzy</a> on May 31.</span></p><p>But it wasn't all <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword> at the voting session. One of Trump's favorite phrases was named the 2017 word of the year

According to satellite observations, it occurs more often over land than over the oceans. And lightning seems to happen more often closer to the equator.</p><p>The map above shows the average yearly counts of lightning flashes per square kilometer from 1995 to 2013. Areas with the fewest number of flashes each year are gray and purple; areas with the largest number of lightning flashes-as many as 150 per year per square kilometer-are bright pink.</p><p>The map is based on data collected from 1998-2013 by the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) on NASA's <a href="http://trmm.gsfc.nasa.gov/">Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission</a> satellite, and from 1995-2000 by the Optical Transient Detector (OTD) on the<a href="http://www.wmo-sat.info/oscar/satellites/view/309">OrbView-1/Microlab</a> satellite. Flashes above 38 degrees North were observed by OTD only, as the satellite flew to higher latitudes.</p><p>The higher frequency of lighting over land makes sense because solid earth absorbs sunlight and heats up faster than water; this means there is stronger convection and greater atmospheric instability, leading to the formation of thunder and lightning producing storms.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>According to NASA's Daniel Cecil, a member of the Global Hydrology and Climate Center's <a href="http://lightning.nsstc.nasa.gov/lightning_team.html">lightning team,</a> the data also have revealed some interesting regional trends. For example, scientists have observed a large number of flashes during the month of May in the Brahmaputra Valley of far eastern India. The heating and weather patterns are unstable and changeable at that time-just before the onset of the monsoon, which brings plenty of rain but much less lightning. In contrast, locations in <a href="https://twitter.com/AstroTerry/status/582242924852879360">Central Africa</a> and Northwestern South America have large amounts of lightning throughout the entire year.</p><p>As the map shows, the highest amounts of lightning flashes occur in the far eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2015/mar/11/venezuela-lightning-lake-maracaibo">Lake Maracaibo</a> in northwestern Venezuela.</p><p>Cecil noted that more years of data has not necessarily brought notable big-picture differences when compared to the <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=6679">earlier maps</a>. "The longer record allows us to more confidently identify some of these finer details," he said. 'That way you could take it off the books and still blunt Google,' said one source. 'We know Zuckerberg would love to help with that.'"</p>
