In a significant victory, India got elected as Member of the <keyword id="233455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN-Commission">UN Commission</keyword> on the Status of Women, the principal global body focussed on gender equality and women empowerment, beating China in a hotly-contested election. The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The 54-member ECOSOC, holding the first plenary meeting of its 2021 session in the General Assembly Hall on Monday, held elections for two seats in the Asia-Pacific States category with Afghanistan, India and China in the fray. Afghanistan, which is led by Ambassador Adela Raz at the UN, garnered 39 votes and India got 38 votes of the 54 ballots cast. China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, got only 27 votes and could not even cross the half-way mark and also failed to get the required majority of 28 votes. It is highly notable and telling that China lost the election to the UN's principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and women empowerment when the silver jubilee anniversary of the landmark Beijing conference on women is being commemorated and of which China takes a lot of ownership on. The election result is being seen as sending a strong signal about China's own record of women's equality and empowerment. India's Permanent Mission to the UN worked tirelessly for the hard-fought election, reaching out and sensitising all Member States, sources said. India and Afghanistan will join Argentina, Austria, Dominican Republic, Israel, Latvia, Nigeria, Turkey and Zambia, which were elected by acclamation, to the Commission on the Status of Women for a four-year term beginning from 2021-2025. India's election win at the CSW is highly significant as it comes on the eve of India gearing up to sit at the UN Security Council high table as non-permanent member for a two-year term beginning January 1, 2021. Former UN Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director of UN Women Lakshmi Puri congratulated the Indian Mission and Ambassador Tirumurti on the election win. India beats China to win crucial election to UN commission on women

India has contributed $500,000 to the <keyword id="4715381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="un-peacebuilding-fund">UN Peacebuilding Fund</keyword>, expressing hope that more funding by nations will boost efforts by the world body to build and sustain peace, according to <keyword id="6367495" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PTI">PTI</keyword> news report. India has been a member of the <keyword id="3524301" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="peacebuilding-commission">Peacebuilding Commission</keyword> since its inception in December 2005 and has so far contributed $5 million to the Peacebuilding Fund. The fresh contribution of $500,000 to the fund will be effected over the coming days. The fund was launched to support activities, actions, programmes and organisations that seek to build a lasting peace in countries emerging from conflict. "We hope that the Peacebuilding F<keyword id="6355835" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN">un</keyword>d will be able to attract much greater funding as we go along so that the UN efforts to build and sustain peace can have greater impact on the ground," India's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador <keyword id="3594123" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tanmaya-Lal">Tanmaya Lal</keyword> said here yesterday at the fund's annual stakeholders' meeting. "India has always argued for comprehensive sustainable development, inclusive economic growth and political processes for preventing conflict as well as undertaking effective peacebuilding efforts," <keyword id="3268" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lal">Lal</keyword> added. He said that this was obviously not easy and required a long-term commitment and sustained investment, including a vastly expanded funding. He noted that for UN's own peacebuilding efforts to have an impact, a significantly enhanced level of funding is required.

India contributes $500,000 to UN Peacebuilding Fund

The <keyword id="6415708" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Khadi-and-Village-Industries-Commission">Khadi and Village Industries Commission</keyword> (<keyword id="6407941" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kvic">KVIC</keyword>) is seeking international trademark protection for 'Charkha' symbol used on khadi products, according to an official statement. The commission is the registered proprietor of over a hundred trademark registrations, including the symbol of 'Charkha' in India and other countries like Russia, China, Germany, Australia, UK and Bhutan, the MSME ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. These <keyword id="1376938" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="trademarks">trademarks</keyword> and symbols, it said, have been misused time and again by private players. "In an initiative to prevent such misuse any further, KVIC has taken up the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Commerce and Permanent Mission of India at UN, Geneva seeking international trademark protection of symbol of 'Charkha' under the Paris Convention," it said.
 An article of the convention protects armorial bearings, flags and other state emblems as well as official signs and hallmarks of the states.
 The signs published with <keyword id="141585" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Intellectual-Property-Organization">World Intellectual Property Organization</keyword> (WIPO) under this act are prevented from being registered or used as trademarks, across the world, without authorization, it said. The commission has written to Commerce Minister <keyword id="6355222" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="piyush-goyal">Piyush Goyal</keyword> seeking his intervention to expedite the matter. "KVIC is fighting cases in several countries for violation of the khadi mark regulations," it said.
 The regulations issued in 2013 by the MSME ministry empower KVIC to grant 'Khadi Mark' registration and take royalties from any producer using this mark.
 "KVIC has issued notices against 600 entities in India, including a renowned garment chain and three entities in the international market, for misusing these symbols and indulging in unfair trade practices in the recent past," it added.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed senior UN official <keyword id="251474" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Siddharth-Chatterjee">Siddharth Chatterjee</keyword> of India as <keyword id="10440639" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-united-nations-resident-coordinator">the United Nations Resident Coordinator</keyword> in China. Resident Coordinators are the UN Secretary-General's representatives for development at the country level. They lead UN teams supporting countries to recover better from the COVID-19 pandemic through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Guterres appointed Chatterjee as the Resident Coordinator in China, with the host government's approval. Chatterjee's "appointment follows confirmation from the Host Government, where he will take up his post in the middle of January of next year," Spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday as he made the announcement. "We congratulate our friend Siddharth," Dujarric said. "We proudly remain with full gender parity and North-South balance among all of our Resident Coordinators, who cover 162 countries and territories," he said. Senior UN official Siddharth Chatterjee appointed United Nations Resident Coordinator in China

New Delhi, Jan 17 () A UN report on Friday said continued structural reforms are necessary to boost growth in India, which is currently facing an economic slowdown.
 The World Economic Situation and Prospects 2020 (WESP) report has also lowered GDP growth estimate for India while expressing hope that combination of fiscal stimulus and financial sector reforms will help boost consumption.
 "After experiencing a sharp economic slowdown from 6.8 per cent in 2018 to 5.7 per cent in 2019, India has committed to an ambitious fiscal expansion to complement the country's already loose monetary policy.
 "The combination of fiscal stimulus and financial sector reforms, boosting investment and consumption, is expected to support a recovery in growth to 6.6 per cent, but it will take continued structural reforms to bring India's growth back to its previous levels," it said.
 However, the data related to India was revised to 5 per cent for the current fiscal and 5.8-5.9 per cent for the next financial year, Nagesh Kumar, Head, UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, said.
 While presenting the report, he said the GDP forecast in WESP did not take into account the latest growth numbers released by India's National Statistical Office (NSO).
 The report, he said was computed in October 2019 and NSO's advanced growth estimates were released in January 2020 suggesting country's growth would slip to 5 per cent during 2019-20 fiscal.
 Kumar further said India's macro economic fundamentals are strong as ever and recovery in growth is expected in the next fiscal.
 According to the UN study, one in five countries will see per capita income stagnate or decline this year, but listed India among few countries where the per capita GDP growth rate could exceed 4 per cent level in 2020.
 A prolonged weakness in global economic activity may cause significant setbacks for sustainable development, including the goals to eradicate poverty and create decent jobs for all. At the same time, pervasive inequalities and the deepening climate crisis are fuelling growing discontent in many parts of the world.
 In the European Union, manufacturing will continue to be held back by global uncertainty, but this will be partially offset by steady growth in private consumption, allowing a modest rise in GDP growth from 1.4 per cent in 2019 to 1.6 per cent in 2020.
 Despite significant headwinds, East Asia remains the world's fastest growing region and the largest contributor to global growth, as per the report.
 In China, GDP growth is projected to moderate gradually from 6.1 per cent in 2019 to 6.0 per cent in 2020 and 5.9 per cent in 2021, supported by more accommodative monetary and fiscal policies.
 "Growth in other large emerging countries, including Brazil, India, Mexico, the Russian Federation and Turkey, is expected to gain some momentum in 2020," the UN report said.
 As the global economic balance is shifting from the EU, the US and other developed countries towards China, India and other developing countries, global economic decision-making power is shifting as well, it noted.
 "Global cooperation mechanisms will need to recognise this shifting balance while continuing to allow the under represented to be heard," it added.
 The UN report also said that eradicating poverty will increasingly rely on tackling inequality going forward. NKD CS MKJ

Qureshi's aggressive remarks came at a time when the Imran Khan-led government is facing serious criticism from its opposition parties for failing to raise the issue of Kashmir at the UN platform and giving India a walkover to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. While Pakistan voted against India's contention for the non-permanent membership, its vote didn't matter as a heavy majority voted in favour of New Delhi. "Though it was a secret balloting, Pakistan openly said that it had voted against India for last year's August 5 unconstitutional steps it took in occupied Jammu and Kashmir and for violating the UN Charter, UNSC resolutions and international norms," maintained Qureshi. Pakistan's anger over India's inclusion into the UNSC is understandable as its ongoing diplomatic campaign to attract support against the Modi government for its decision taken on August 5, 2019, abrogating Articles 370 and 35A, changing the special status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, in the United Nations has practically failed to yield results. Tensions at the Line of Control (LoC) have also intensified in the recent days as heavy exchanges of artillery firing have claimed lives of border security forces and civilians on both sides. Pakistan and India both have been lodging strong protests against the ceasefire violations, summoning senior diplomats of respective high commissions to record their protests. It pledged another USD 5 million for 2020 which opens its way to become a member of the agency's advisory commission, according to official sources.The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) applauded India's financial support to keep its basic services operating, especially under the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.The contribution was presented to the UN agency by the Representative of India (ROI) to the State of Palestine, Sunil Kumar."On behalf of the agency, I would like to express my deep appreciation to the Government of India for advancing part of its contribution, which will help UNRWA address cash flow challenges," Marc Lassouaoui, chief of the Donor Relations at the agency said."The continued determination and commitment of India in support of the Palestine refugees is commendable, in particular under the current circumstances brought on us by COVID-19," he said."On behalf of the Government of India, I would like to express my appreciation for the commendable work and endeavours carried out by the UNRWA. We believe that our contribution will support the agency's activities in providing the needed assistance to Palestinian refugees, and assist in achieving their full human development potential," Kumar said. India's contribution will support the agency's "dire" financial situation due to the funding gaps that risk its core services to the Palestinian refugees in the fields of education and health.About 3.1 million Palestine refugees depend on health services provided by the UNRWA. At the same time, the agency's schools educate 526,000 students every year, of which half are female.The agency was created in December 1949 by the UN to support the relief and human development of Palestinian refugees.The UNRWA definition of "refugee" covers Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their homes during the 1948 War.Meanwhile, India is preparing medical supplies for the Palestinians to help them in their fight against the coronavirus which is likely to reach the Palestine soon, the Indian mission in the West Bank said in a statement.Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month spoke to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas over phone and discussed the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He appreciated efforts being made by the Palestinian Authority (PA) to protect its population and assured all possible support from India.External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar later talked to his Palestinian counterpart Riad Malki and reiterated India's commitment to support Palestine in its battle against the global pandemic.So far, 554 COVID-19 cases have been detected in the West Bank under PA and east Jerusalem, with two casualties.Twenty people were found infected with the virus in Gaza, of which 14 are said to have recovered.Separately, 17 agreements have been signed under an India-Palestine development partnership between the two sides in the fields of agriculture, health care, information technology, youth affairs, consular affairs, women empowerment and media in the past five years.New Delhi is to provide an assistance of around USD 72 million through these agreements in projects like the post-2014 war reconstruction efforts in Gaza, construction of five schools, setting up a centre of excellence for information and communication technologies at Al-Quds University and developing a satellite centre in Ramallah. New Delhi, June 17 (IANS) In a bid to help tackle rise in domestic violence during the social distancing times in India, Twitter on Wednesday launched a dedicated search prompt to serve information and updates from authoritative sources around domestic violence. Twitter has partnered with the Ministry of Women and Child Development the National Commission for Women in India to expand its efforts towards women. The search prompt will be available on iOS, Android and on mobile.twitter.com in India, in both English and Hindi languages, the company said in a statement. Data shows that since the outbreak of Covid-19, violence against women and girls has intensified in India and across the globe. "We recognise collaboration with the public, government and NGOs is key to combating the complex issue of domestic violence. Accessing reliable information through this search prompt could be a survivor's first step towards seeking help against abuse and violence," said Mahima Kaul, Director, Public Policy, India and South Asia, Twitter. Every time someone searches for certain keywords associated with the issue of domestic violence, a prompt will direct them to the relevant information and sources of help available on Twitter. This is an expansion of Twitter's #ThereIsHelp prompt, which was specifically put in place for the public to find clear, credible information on critical issues. The feature will be reviewed at regular intervals by the Twitter team to ensure that all related keywords generate the proactive search prompt, said the company. Violence against women and girls across Asia Pacific is pervasive but at the same time widely under reported. Twitter launches dedicated tool to curb domestic violence in India

Mumbai, Jan 29 () Domestic pharma companies have the potential to grow their revenue from the US by almost five times at around USD 30 billion from USD 6.5 billion in 2018 if they properly tap just 10 of the widely consumed drugs in the world's largest drug market, according to an analysis by the World Trade Centre. Despite being the largest export market for domestic pharma makers, they served only a miniscule 5.6 per cent or USD 6.5 billion of the over USD 116 billion American pharma imports of in 2018, show the <keyword id="8679401" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="WTC-data">WTC data</keyword>. Despite having good demand from across the markets, primarily due to lower prices and easy availability, India controls only 2.4 per cent of global pharma exports. 
 With robust manufacturing capabilities, domestic pharma companies have the potential to enhance their exports to the US by almost five times to USD 29.6 billion, says the WTC in a note quoting data from the UN's International Trade Commission.
 The WTC has identified 10 products that constitute about 25 per cent of American pharma imports in 2018 at USD 29.6 billion which constitute about 17 per cent of US imports from India.
 These ten products include single vitamins, medicaments affecting central nervous system, cough &amp; cold preparations, dermatological agents &amp; local anesthetics, chemical contraceptives, sterile surgical catgut, antineoplastic &amp; immunosupressive medicaments, and structural analogues among others.
 These 10 products constitute around 25 per cent of American drug imports and but the share of Indian companies in 2018 was only worth USD 1 billion. 
 Domestic pharma companies shipped products worth USD 6.53 billion in 2018 to the US, which was only 5.61 per cent of total American imports worth USD 116.35 billion, showed WTC data. BEN MR

Just ten drugs can add $30 billion to Indian pharma's US revenue, says a report

<ul><li><keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> ranks lowest among non-OECD countries in terms of ‘<keyword id="6878450" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="little-or-no-enforcement">little or no enforcement</keyword>’ against <keyword id="6878449" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="exporting-corruption">exporting corruption</keyword>. </li><li>While India hasn’t conducted any investigations into foreign bribery, Indian entities have come under scrutiny from other governments. </li><li>While the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Companies Act 2013 to address corruption, there is no targeted legislation against foreign bribery.</li></ul>A report by <keyword id="72551" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Transparency-International">Transparency International</keyword> Global found that India is a part of 22 countries with ‘little or no enforcement’ against <a href="https://www.transparency.org/whatwedo/publication/exporting_corruption_2018">exporting corruption</a>. The <a href="https://www.transparency.org/news/feature/exporting-corruption-2018">report specifically mentions</a> China, Hong Kong, India and Singapore as countries with the worst performance on the index. This is particularly worrisome since cumulatively these countries account for over 2% of world exports. Data dive The report shows how over the period of 2014 to 2017, there have been no foreign bribery cases filed or investigations conducted. That being said, the report also highlights that while the Indian government may not have been vigilant, Indian entities and individuals have been investigated by foreign governments in connection to alleged bribery charges. Even if there have been investigations conducted, it’s impossible to know because the authorities do not disclose any such information publically or on request. It’s also unclear whether there’s a dedicated system in place to collect data on foreign bribery within the Central Statistics Office (CSO). Ignoring policy Back in 2015, the Indian Law Commission did submit a report to the Indian government proposing changes to how foreign bribery cases are addressed. The draft bill included recommendations like including a prison sentence of up to seven years and higher sanctions. Come 2018, that bill has never made it to the parliament for a vote. That being said, the parliament did pass the Prevention of Corruption Act in July that covered foreign firms working in India. Even so, foreign bribery is yet to be exclusively criminalised. Even the Companies Act 2013 takes bribery into account but has several loopholes and vague articles that can be easily circumvented. Recommendations In addition to analysing the issue of foreign bribery, the report also suggests how the problem can be countered. One of those measures is initiating enforcement against foreign bribery and adjoining offences in line with the UN Convention against Corruption. Effective legislation should be put in place to protect whistleblowers in the private sector. And, in order for implementation to be effective, India should also publish the data and enforcement results of these case resolutions. It has also been recommended that the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development - Working Group on Bribery (OECD-WGB) execute efforts to persuade India and the other nations to become a part of the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention, inclusive of effort carried out within the G20.
