While teaching at the University of Bonn, Ratzinger was chosen as a theological adviser to Cardinal Joseph Frings of Cologne, a strong critic of Nazism, for the Second Vatican Council held between 1962 and 1965. The Second Vatican Council attempted to renew the Catholic Church by engaging the modern world more constructively. At the council, Ratzinger argued that Catholic theology needed to develop a "new language" to speak to a changing world. As pope, Benedict would later reject more progressive interpretations of the council as a revolutionary event that was intended to remake the Catholic Church. While the council did bring substantial changes to Catholic life, particularly by allowing mass in local languages, Benedict resisted any suggestion that the Second Vatican Council was calling for a fundamental break with centuries-old Catholic doctrine and tradition. And during his pontificate, he would permit wider celebration of the old Latin Mass – a decision that his successor Pope Francis would later reverse In 1966, Ratzinger accepted an important teaching position at the University of Tubingen. During the late 1960s, Tubingen saw widespread student protests, some of which called for the Catholic Church to become more democratic. When protesting students disrupted the Tubingen faculty senate, Ratzinger reportedly walked out instead of speaking with students as other faculty did. Ratzinger was disturbed by what he felt were dictatorial and Marxist tendencies among the student protesters. Ratzinger then moved to the University of Regensberg. In 1977, he was named bishop of Munich and Freising by Pope Paul VI. Soon after, he was named a cardinal, a member of the administrative body that elects the pope. Cardinal and pope As a skilled theologian, Ratzinger was chosen by Pope John Paul II to head the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which oversees and enforces Catholic doctrine. In this position, Cardinal Ratzinger disciplined a number of theologians. Most notable was the case of American priest and theologian Charles Curran, who was fired from The Catholic University of America because he challenged official Catholic teachings on sexuality. Ratzinger was also chosen to head the committee drafting The Catechism of the Catholic Church. Published in 1992, The Catechism remains an important foundation for any understanding of Catholic thought and practice. After John Paul II's death in 2005, Ratzinger was elected pope. He chose the name "Benedict" in honor of Benedict of Nursia, the founder of Western monasticism, a religious movement that preserved Western culture after the fall of Rome. The name "Benedict" also acknowledged Benedict XV, a much-overlooked pope who tried to broker a peace agreement to end the First World War. Controversies in the pontificate After his election, <keyword id="22675" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pope-benedict-xvi" source="Orion">Pope Benedict XVI</keyword> had to confront a growing sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. While a cardinal, he had publicly downplayed the extent and seriousness of the crisis. And it was under his leadership that The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith decided not to remove Lawrence C. Murphy from the priesthood, even though Murphy had been accused of molesting more than 200 boys at a Catholic school for the deaf in Wisconsin. As pope, however, Benedict did take some strong steps that his predecessor, John Paul II, did not. Most significantly, Benedict punished Marcial Maciel Degollado, an incestuous bigamist, serial pedophile and the powerful founder of the Legionaries of Christ, an important Catholic religious order, by taking away his permission to preach or to say Mass publicly. He also criticized Irish bishops for their mishandling of the sexual abuse crisis. For many survivors of clerical sexual abuse, these actions were not nearly enough. Benedict did not move to open Vatican records to public investigation, and he also failed to discipline cardinals and bishops who reassigned pedophile priests. Beyond the sexual abuse crisis, Benedict's pontificate had other controversies that drew worldwide attention. During a lecture in Regensberg in 2006, Benedict seemed to criticize the Islamic view of God and the legacy of the Prophet Muhammad. This lecture led to protests in the Middle East and South Asia. However, his official visits to Beirut and Istanbul repaired some of the damage. Benedict also reached out to Catholic splinter groups. In 2009, he lifted the excommunication of bishops of the order of St. Pius X, a breakaway Catholic sect that rejects the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. After doing this, Benedict learned that one St. Pius X bishop, Richard Williamson, had made antisemitic comments and denied the holocaust. Benedict said his lack of knowledge about Williamson's views was an "unforeseen mishap" due to a lack of familiarity with the internet as a "source of information." Theological writings As pope, Benedict continued his theological writing and produced three important encyclicals or papal letters. The first encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, or "God is Love," defends "charity" as love that is freely given. Charity is not simply a good deed but an act that changes both the giver and the recipient. The second encyclical, Spe Salvi, or "Saved in Hope," reflects upon the hope that God gives human beings in a world that often seems hopeless. In the third encyclical, Caritas in Veritate, or "Charity in Truth," Benedict argues that charity is fundamentally related to justice. And when it comes to questions of human progress and fulfillment, we cannot place our trust in the nation state or market economies because "without God, man neither knows which way to go, nor even understands who he is." These papal letters attempt to defend Christianity in a world that Benedict believed was growing increasingly hostile to religious faith. What was striking about Benedict's thought – even to his theological critics – was how elegantly he presented his case for Christ and Christianity's transforming power as sources of truth, beauty and love. But long before he became pope, Benedict admitted that Christianity would continue to lose cultural ground and dwindle to an ever smaller group of faithful believers. Writing in 1969, Ratzinger predicted the Church would have "to start afresh from the very beginning," which meant that someday Christianity would have to build itself up again from its foundations. The legacy of Benedict XVI When Benedict resigned as pope in 2013, it took the world by surprise. In saying that he could no longer bear the burdens of the Papacy, Benedict promised to live in seclusion. His official title became "Pope Emeritus." But controversy also followed his resignation. For example, he gave interviews and put his name on writings that appeared to criticize the reforms of Pope Francis, who succeeded him. Most recently, a January 2022 report on sexual abuse in the diocese of Munich criticised Ratzinger's "inaction" regarding four cases of sexual abuse during his period as archbishop from 1977 to 1982. In reaction to the report, the pope emeritus apologised but did not admit to any administrative failures. Benedict XVI's writings will be relevant decades from now, but his pontificate will inevitably be associated with controversies. As for his own personal legacy, that will likely be defined by the one issue that concerned Benedict the most: how the Catholic Church can still make a difference in the modern world. Pope Benedict XVI: A man at odds with the modern world who leaves a legacy of intellectual brilliance and controversy

Mohan also confirmed that the rover had survived a particularly tricky plunge through the Martian atmosphere. "Touchdown confirmed," exclaimed Mohan, who emigrated from <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> to the US when she was only a year old. She says the Guidance, Navigation, and Controls Operations (GN&amp;C) are "eyes and ears" of the spacecraft. Raised in Northern Virginia and Washington DC metro area, she completed her bachelor's degree from <keyword id="31781" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cornell-University">Cornell University</keyword> in Mechanical &amp; Aerospace Engineering, and her M.S. and Ph.D from <keyword id="50375" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Massachusetts-Institute-of-Technology">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</keyword> (MIT) in Aeronautics/Astronautics. Over the course of her career with NASA, Mohan has worked on the Cassini mission to Saturn and GRAIL -- a pair of formation flown spacecraft to the <keyword id="42440" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Moon">Moon</keyword>, and has been a mainstay with the Mars 2020 mission since its beginning in 2013. According to the Mohan, her interest in space was peaked after watching the popular TV show Star Trek when she was 9. "Seeing the beautiful depictions of the new regions of the universe that they were exploring. I remember thinking 'I want to do that. I want to find new and beautiful places in the universe.' The vastness of space holds so much knowledge that we have only begun to learn," she had told NASA. Mohan noted that her passion for space increased further when she took her first physics class. "I was lucky enough to have a great teacher, and everything was so understandable and easy. That was when I really considered engineering, as a way to pursue space," she added. Commenting on her team's role in the current mission, Mohan said during the cruise phase heading toward Mars, their job is to figure out how the spacecraft is oriented, and make sure it is pointed correctly in space -- "solar arrays to sun, antenna to Earth, and maneuver the spacecraft to get it where we want to go." She said during the "seven minutes of terror" leading to the entry, descent, and landing on Mars, GN&amp;C determines the position of the spacecraft and commands the maneuvers to help it land safely. "As the team's operations lead, I am the primary point of communication between the GN&amp;C subsystem and the rest of the project. "I am responsible for the training of the GN&amp;C team, scheduling the mission control staffing for GN&amp;C, as well as the policies/procedures the GN&amp;C uses in the mission control room," Mohan noted. Meet Swati Mohan, the Indian-American scientist who helped NASA land rover on Mars

In fact, getting teased for bringing ethnic food to school is such a common phenomenon, particularly for <keyword id="12375512" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="asian-americans" source="Orion">Asian Americans</keyword>, that it's become a hallmark of <a href="https://twitter.com/gr33nbe4nsbvby/status/1282695493676670979">diaspora narratives. </a>Jay Caspian Kang isn't interested in writing "smelly lunchbox stories," however. As he writes in his latest book The Loneliest Americans, he learned early on in a middle school English class that "there were two types of race writers." There were "those who wrote straightforward narratives about oppression and whose work should be studied through an anthropological lens. Then there's those who "engaged in the serious business of literature." Both a novelist and a journalist, Kang wanted to find a way to combine both approaches. "The book in a lot of ways is an attempt to clear up some of the neuroses about how I should write about my immigrant story or how I should write about my race," Kang said of The Loneliest Americans, which was released earlier this month. "I thought it would be good to start with some sort of acknowledgement that the process of writing immigration stories is pretty fraught and contested and I myself as I'm writing the book am feeling that," the writer told Insider. In avoiding formulaic anecdotes about what it was like to grow up in the US as the child of Korean immigrants - including what is now known as the "smelly lunchbox" cliche - Kang is not attempting to undermine the painful and serious nature of being bullied over your race. He is simply more concerned with steering the conversation about Asian American issues beyond microaggressions and Hollywood representation. To Kang, the lack of Asian representation in C-Suites or white chefs appropriating Asian cuisine get such outsized attention that they take the focus away from the significant struggles of poorer Asians and prevent Asian Americans from forming cohesive political movements. "Should we form our concerns around people like us, people who are doing alright," Kang questioned. "Or should we form our politics around the people who are really precarious in our community?" "There are a lot of them," Kang told Insider of unrepresented voices in the community. "Asian Americans have the highest gap between the wealthy and the poor of any racial group." <h2>What does it mean to be Asian American? </h2>At the heart of The Loneliest Americans are several questions; among the most prominent is whether the categorization Asian American, a term so broad that Kang says it encompasses everyone from "Indian Americans, who have the highest incomes of any group of Asian-Americans to people from Cambodia, which tend to have much lower incomes on average," is futile. "If we see things and we feel that we as a community are experiencing something that is happening to our people, what is that people?," Kang asked. "How do we define that term?" he added. "How do we define who's in that group and who's out of that group?" As Kang details in the book, the term "Asian American" originated from the political activism of Berkeley students who founded the Asian American Political Alliance (AAPA). "The term was directly political: an appeal for solidarity among people of Asian descent and a recognition that they shared the same struggle," Kang writes. "What the struggle was - and is - remains largely undefined." Kang situates the question of contemporary Asian American identity in an overarching historical narrative of Asian Americans' presence in the US after the passage of the Hart-Cellar Act in 1965 - which lifted restrictions on Asian immigration, and through his own family's personal history. He said the threads about his own family were among the most challenging parts of the book to write. "You feel like you're betraying your family in some way and you wonder what they're going to think," Kang said. "I think a lot about my own kid and the country she's going to inherit and how she's going to think about herself.He then posed a question to himself: "Do I really want this child to have to read this and to know about the anxiety of her parents?" <h2>The Loneliest Americans has sparked intracultural criticism </h2>Kang has cause to be concerned about how the book is received; The Loneliest Americans has sparked intracultural criticism, though not necessarily in response to the sections in which he writes about his own family. Instead, most of the feedback seems to be centered around the book's call-to-action to reimagine Asian American identity so that AAPI communities and other marginalized groups will garner strengthened political power. "To find a meaningful place in politics," Kang argues in the book's epilogue. Kang noted that he decided to write the book after more than 10 years writing on Asian American issues and that he only decided to write The Loneliest Americans versus as a way for him to more deeply "interrogate" his own ideas and engage with previous research."I felt a few years ago that I was starting to come to some conclusions I felt confident in - and I don't think these conclusions necessarily need to be held up as statues," Kang said. "But I did feel more confident that I was right about some things about Asian Americans and immigrants, which is when I decided to write a book." "If they had just opened up the book, they would see that they're wrong," Kang said of some of his online critics. "I've spent the past 10 years reporting on these communities. To have that all erased and have people lie about the work you've done, to have them classify it as some self-hating rich kid who's just talking about himself, I don't know how to respond to that besides saying, 'that's just not true.'" "I've just stopped responding [to the online criticism], because there's nothing I can do about it," he added. "I hope that anyone who has these questions will just Google the work I've done and I think they'll find the truth is very different from what some of the people are accusing me of." <h2>The Loneliest Americans calls for greater unity with the most marginalized Asian Americans</h2>Despite controversy over the book, The Loneliest Americans is inspiring dialogue about how Asian Americans of more privileged positions can show up and avoid further marginalizing the most vulnerable members of their ethnic group. By the end of The Loneliest Americans, the question remains: what would a class-conscious multiethnic coalition look like in practice? Kang told Insider "it requires people who are generally in control of the messaging around Asian Americans and who are generally upwardly mobile professional people to take up the concerns of their group who are less fortunate." He added that issues like Asian representation are harder to organize multiracial and multiethnic groups of people around compared to issues of immigration and economic justice. Those movements affect multiple groups. "Right now Asian American politics are so obsessed with microaggressions and Hollywood representation and I don't think those are fertile grounds for solidarity," Kang said. "But if we shift the focus and location of those politics to the people who are struggling the most, we'll have a better chance at solidarity with other groups who can say they also have these same struggles."

Jay Caspian Kang's 'The Loneliest Americans' questions the utility of the Asian American label

 All that 9-year-old <keyword id="3384807" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Oyon-Ganguli">Oyon Ganguli</keyword> could think when he came across the viral <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ALS+Ice+bucket+challenge&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">ALS ice-bucket challenge</a> was the fact that it was a terrible waste of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=water&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">water</a>. 
 
He also found out that a 10-minute shower wastes approximately 50 gallons of water. “Multiply that by five people taking 20 minute showers, that comes upto around 500 gallons,” he said. 
 Unable to shake off this terrible realisation regarding <keyword id="66392" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="water-wastage">water wastage</keyword>, Ganguli decided that something needed to be done. 
 The result of that is ‘<keyword id="3384809" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="The-Cleaner">The Cleaner</keyword>’ which is a shower water recycling prototype that filters the water which can once again be re-used in the shower. 
 What more? The Massachusetts resident conservation-oriented <keyword id="67522" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="invention">invention</keyword> won him the Camp Invention Mighty Minds contest this year. The contest is run jointly by National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF), a platform for America’s budding young inventors. 
 
In a Youtube video where he explains his prototype, Ganguli claims that it was because of his mother that he had entered the competition. 
 
‘The Cleaner’ was made inside a strawberry box which held three layers of cleaning material- gravel, sand and charcoal. He took help from his friend Mateo Rosado for the filtering process. While researching for the prototype, Ganguli also realised that a similar product already exists but he wasn’t one to give up. 
 
Ganguli, who is Bengali novelist and Sahitya Akademi award-winner Sunil Gangopadhyay’s grandson claims that he was so excited about his win that ‘he ended up running circles around the kitchen and backyard for 20 minutes.’ 
 
The third-grader at Fitzgerald Elementary School worked for an hour over two weekends to build the presentation. Explaining how it works, he said that the machine takes in used shower water from the drain and reaches a filter with three layers: gravel, sand and charcoal. After the water is cleaned and filtered, it sits in the storage tank before it is pumped back up to the bathtub. There is also a little door that provides access to the filter incase it gets clogged. 
 
Even though the invention can be expensive, Ganguli is confident that it will save the government from spending more money to get water apart from reducing one’s water bill. 
 
As the grand prize winner, he also gets to spend two days in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=washington+dc&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Washington D.C </a>at the National Inventors Hall of Fame where he’ll meet some of the brightest minds in the country. 
 But, Ganguli is far from done. Infact, the 9-year old is already working on another idea, called the ‘<keyword id="3384810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Space-Cleaner">Space Cleaner</keyword>’- which is a solar-powered robot whose one arm melts space junk and the other vacuums up the melted liquid. 
 
The idea for this came to Ganguli while he was watching Apollo 13 with his parents and thought to himself, “What happens to everything that’s flying off the ship into space?” 
 
He also has big dreams for when he grows up. “When I grow up, I want to be one of three things- work at Lego, be an inventor or work for Mojang (the company that develops <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=minecraft&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Minecraft</a>),” he said in an <a href="http://waltham.wickedlocal.com/article/20160427/NEWS/160426185/?Start=2">interview</a>.
