It became one of the most successful PSU market debuts, second only to IRCTC’s stellar debut of over 100% listing gains. IREDA’s stock closed at ₹59 after gaining through the day – beating grey market expectations of 31% listing gains — by a large margin. The market cap of the company stood at ₹16,123 crore, according to Bombay Stock Exchange. Its ₹2,150 crore initial public offer (IPO) was subscribed 38.8 times the shares on offer, with substantial interest from institutional investors. The qualified institutional buyer (QIB) portion was subscribed 104 times. Due to the high number of applications, investors who missed the IPO allotment scrambled for the stock on listing day. “We believe post listing there would be decent demand for the shares as it had received overwhelming response from all kinds of investors especially from long term funds. while those who failed to get allotments can accumulate on every dip for holding it for healthy long term returns as markets always reward a player who has high visibility and growth potential,” said Prashanth Tapse, senior VP of research at Mehta Equities. It has over 36 years of experience in promoting, developing and extending financial assistance for new and renewable energy projects. It also serves energy efficiency and conservation projects. Tapse says that IREDA has the potential to upgrade to a Navratna company. “The NBFC's financial autonomy is expected to boost its competitive edge,” he adds. The public financing institution (PFI) intends to use the net proceeds from the fresh issue towards augmenting its capital base to meet future capital requirements and onward lending. It provides financial products and related services, from project conceptualisation to post-commissioning, for and other value chain activities like equipment manufacturing and transmission. As of September 30, 2023, it had a diversified portfolio of term loan outstanding amounting to ₹47,514 crore. Its revenue from operations grew 24% in FY23, as compared to the year before. Dream debut: IREDA’s stock zooms ahead with 87.4% listing gains

<ul><li>Strong IPO buzz and heavy marketing drive up listing gains of a few stocks, which should be encashed, advise experts.</li><li>Retail investors should refrain from participating in IPOs, and wait for six months for a stock to cool off.</li><li>Ideaforge, Netweb Technologies, Aeroflex Industries, Utkarsh Small Finance Bank gave good listing gains, but fell flat after. </li></ul>It’s been a fabulous week for investors who applied to initial public offers (IPOs) hoping to make a killing on listing day. Tata Technologies gave a stellar triple-digit listing gains, IREDA was very close to doubling wealth with 87% gains and small-cap stock Gandhar too presented a pleasant surprise with 78% gains. Those who were lucky enough to be allotted these stocks are left with the question — should I sell or hold on for more gains in the future? Experts say that bumper gains are a cue for them to make money, especially in stocks which saw sharp gains. “The recent IPOs of Tata Technologies, IREDA, Gandhar Oil were attractively priced. Therefore, they saw bumper gains on listing day. We believe that investors are better off by selling such shares and locking in listing gains. In most cases, stocks do give opportunity to re-enter at lower levels,” Apurva Sheth, head of market perspectives &amp; research at SAMCO Securities tells Business Insider India. ‘IPO value not true value’ The IPO season of 2023 has been rewarding for investors. The average listing gain has been 29.4% for debuts till the first half of the year, according to Primedatabase. But companies that saw stellar listing gains like Ideaforge shed a part of its value over time. The stock performance of other debut-stars like Netweb Technologies, Aeroflex Industries and Utkarsh Small Finance Bank has been tepid after stellar listing gains. Vishnu prakash R Punglia and Cyient DLM however are exceptions. Extremely high investor interest, heavy subscriptions in the IPO period can turn the needle away from true valuations and their future potential, experts insist. “IPOs generating a strong buzz due to a unique business model, effective publicity and good brand identity can post a fair listing gain even in the event of lower earnings visibility, as a result of high demand from investors. If an investor is subscribing to such IPOs, they should look to book listing gains,” Sunil Shah, group CEO and MD at Khambatta Securities tells Business Insider India. Sell (Gandhar), Hold (Tata Tech) &amp; Accumulate (IREDA) Amongst freshly listed pack of companies, Prashanth Tapse, senior VP of research at Mehta Equities advises allotted investors of Tata Tech to book 50% profits if the stock moves over ₹1,400 and hold the rest for long term, as he believes the engineering R&amp;D major is a potential ‘doubler candidate’. The stock had closed at ₹1,314 on its debut on Thursday. At the same time, Tapse sees limited upside from the current levels for Gandhar Oil, which has managed to narrow the gap with peers. He advises its investors to book profits. For IREDA, he advises investors to ‘hold for long term’ and accumulate on dips as it holds the potential to provide healthy long term returns. “Companies with strong fundamentals, i.e. those with a proven solid business model and robust earnings visibility, are the ones investors should look to stay invested in,” says Shah. investors The IPO rush tends to ignore facts like overpriced issues and other troubles. The reason being the <keyword id="10639565" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo-financing" source="Orion">IPO financing</keyword> that large investors receive, who apply and sell immediately on allotment. But this liquidity leaves the stock, and that’s what drives prices down, insist experts. “IPO financing does drive up the demand for IPOs due to the additional liquidity it infuses, and it further brings in more investors looking for listing gains. That said, the recent curb on IPO financing imposed by the RBI and changes announced by SEBI relating to the allocation methodology are expected to negatively impact IPO financing,” said Shah. The impact of IPO financing driving up listing day gains is reducing. In April 2022, RBI mandated non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) to not lend more than ₹1 crore per borrower for subscribing in IPOs. Markets regulator SEBI too mandated to keep one third of the HNI quota shares for applicants below ₹10 lakh, which is also known as small HNI category. “All these measures led to considerable reduction in IPO financing. This has led to limited impact on the listing day,” says Sheth. Sheth also insists that IPOs are generally overpriced and retail investors are better off without participating in them. He insists that retail investors should get into newly listed six months after listing wherein the stock has had time to cool off and consolidate. Tata Technologies IPO which broke a record with the number of applications is expected to provide super premium listing gains on the back of its lineage and a well-established business model of the engineering R&amp;D player. “There is a high possibility that Tata Technologies can be a doubler candidate post listing. Given the growth potential in outsourcing, the business model would be in great demand going forward. We recommend allotted investors to book 50% profits over and above our expectations and retain the rest for the long-term,” said Prashanth Tapse, research analyst, senior VP of research at Mehta Equities. While oil manufacturer Gandhar Oil also saw healthy subscriptions, and its niche play has also appealed to the brokerages and investors alike. “We recommend allotted investors to book listing day profits over and above our expectations of 30-40% listing gains. Considering limited upside post listing, investors who failed to get allotments in the public offer can accumulate on dips post listing,” says Rajan Shinde, research analyst at Mehta Equities. Flair Writing which is known for its stationery products is also branching out into houseware, steel bottles and appliances. While short-term investors who see over 25% listing gains can choose to book profits, there is a case for long-term investors to hold on or accumulate on dips, advises Shinde.

Its products currently reach 3.15 lakh wholesalers and retailers. The IPO comprises fresh issue to the tune of ₹292 crore; and an offer for sale of ₹301 crore. The net proceeds from the fresh issue will be used to set-up a new manufacturing facility for writing instruments in Valsad, Gujarat. It will use the rest to fund capex; working capital requirements, loan payment and more. The company’s revenues have been growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.85% from FY21 to FY23. Its net profit almost doubled in FY23 as compared to the year before. Plant shutdowns, its inability to carry through its expansion plans, labour unrests, regulatory and other issues have been cited by the company as risk factors in its RHP. It also adds that increased competition could have a material impact on its business. In FY23, the market share of organized players in the writing instrument space is around 78-80% with the rest being catered to by unorganized players, according to CRISIL. Doms Industries lists at over 77% premium exceeding grey market expectations

It has fixed a price band of ₹288-304 for the issue, and intends to raise as much as ₹593 crore via the issue. Investors can bid for a minimum of 49 equity shares and in multiples thereof. The company which manufactures and sells Flair brand of pens, also acquired rights to international brands like Hauser and Pierre Cardin’s writing instruments. Its products currently reach 3.15 lakh wholesalers and retailers. It’s also charting an expansion strategy, and is also expanding its manufacturing capacities. It’s also venturing into houseware and other school and office supplies. “We also seek to focus on growing our existing product portfolio and diversification of our product range, emphasise on mid-premium segment and premium segment to increase margins, continue to increase production capacity and enhance capacity utilization, strategically expand exports, deepen our sales and distribution network and further strengthen our brands,” the company said in its RHP. It’s also setting its sights on increased exports. The company has a market share of 7.1% in the export of writing and creative instruments industry in FY23. It’s expecting to gain from the China +1 strategy adopted by many international companies. “We have received feedback from many international OEMs to make vacuum bottles and more such. It’s a good business which can add to our topline and bottomline both,” Sumit Rathod, whole time director at Flair Writing Industries told Business Insider India. The issue comprises fresh issue to the tune of ₹292 crore; and an offer for sale of ₹301 crore. The net proceeds from the fresh issue will be used to set-up a new manufacturing facility for writing instruments in Valsad, Gujarat. It will use the rest to fund capex; working capital requirements, loan payment and more. Flair Writing hopes to gain from the China +1 strategy

The stock closed at ₹207 as compared to its issue price of ₹230. The benchmark indices too traded in the red on Tuesday, as Sensex shed over 800 50 points, and Nifty fell by 205 points. The grey market was expecting 2% listing gains from the stock. “EPACK listing was below our expectations due to market sentiments. We continue to remain positive on the company business model. EPACK holds a strategic long standing relationship position in the growing Indian Refrigeration and Air conditioning (RAC) industry and also extended relationships provide opportunities for cross-selling,” said Prashanth Tapse, senior VP of research at Mehta Equities. The company is an outsourced design manufacturer of room air conditioners. It is the second biggest original design manufacturer (<keyword id="20382044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="odm" source="keywords">ODM</keyword>) of room air conditioners in India, based on the number of units produced in FY23, as per a Frost &amp; Sullivan report, it says in the DRHP. It has three manufacturing facilities in Dehradun, Uttarakhand; Bhiwadi in Rajasthan; and Sricity in Andhra Pradesh. Apart from indoor units, outdoor units and window air conditioners; it manufactures mixer grinders, water dispensers. Moreover, it aims to expand its portfolios to other consumer goods like hair dryers, kitchen chimneys, domestic air coolers, tower fans and more. “EPACK Durable has a 24% market share in terms of domestically manufactured units by ODM in FY23. The plants are vertically integrated and automated would improve the margins going forward. The increase in wallet share from existing customers through cross-selling and expanding the customer base will increase the business going forward,” said a note by Arihant Capital which gave it a ‘subscribe for long-term’ rating.

EPACK Durable falls 9.7% below its issue price on debut day

Listing gains in focus next week If the grey market premiums are anything to go by, next week will be much better for the issues that were open this week. Analysts say that those who missed out on share allotment due to heavy oversubscription might try to buy from the secondary market – and that’s pushed the listing gains expected for issues live this week — anywhere between 23-78%. Even as the response to IREDA and Tata Technologies was expected as they have strong legacy and brand names, investors are also willing to make their bets on smaller, newer and niche companies. Gandhar Oil Refinery’s book is just as busy as that of Tata Technologies, even though it’s a much smaller issue. “It has leading market share in the Indian white oil market with significant overseas presence; and a well-diversified product portfolio with an extensive customer base,” comments Kunvarji Wealth Solutions. Pen manufacturer Flair Instruments too is getting good interest. “Being among the top three players in the overall writing instrument industry with a market share of 9% in the overall writing and creative instruments industry in India, we believe the company is strategically positioned coupled with a track record of sustained growth,” said Rajan Shinde, research analyst at Mehta Equities. While Nifty gained 13% during the year, <keyword id="1435332" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nifty-midcap" source="Orion">Nifty midcap</keyword> surged 3x faster – at 39%. Small caps were even more agile swelling by 48%, leaving large cap stocks in a bear market zone. After a good year, most people are asking — will the midcap party spill over into the New Year? In 2023, midcaps across sectors saw their order books swell, profitability rise due to benign commodity prices and more such. In the coming year, a lot of troubles could be exposed, says Kotak Securities. “The largecap and high-quality midcaps are in a bull market, with the weak operating performance in the short term and likely deterioration in fundamentals in the medium term being largely ignored by the market. Several low-quality midcaps and smallcaps in general are in a bubble market, with the market attaching unrealistic narratives to many stocks,” said Kotak Securities. Ripe for correction? The time seems ripe for a correction, especially in the short-term. “Investors should remember that after such a strong rally in midcaps, there is a high probability that these stocks might witness heightened volatility in the short term,” Nishit Master, portfolio manager at Axis Securities Portfolio Management Services told Business Insider India. Experts believe only those midcaps that show good earnings performance will be able to hold on to their high valuations. “In the short term, we might witness profit booking in the small and midcap space by traders as they move from stocks and sectors that have done exceedingly well to sectors and stocks where they feel they can hunt for bargains. However, long-term investors will stick to well-performing stocks where the earnings growth trajectory still remains strong,” says Master. Some midcaps however hold a 15-20% upside as some sectors have room for growth, say experts. “Most stocks are ahead of their target price due to change in the business cycle as well as the environment. But there is still room for growth in defence and sugar stocks as the cycle is favourable, and policy also helps,” says Vaibhav Kaushik Research Analyst at GCL Broking. The midcap sun will keep shining Midcaps might not see the sharp run, but investors are far from swearing off these stocks. One clue of this comes from the heavy inflows into these categories of mutual funds. As more and more investors are rushing to open mutual funds, a record amount of ₹21,519.98 crore went into midcap funds, according to Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). As per the latest data available, investors poured in as much as ₹2,665.73 crore in November. There has been a lot of direct participation from retail and HNI investors in the markets too. That’s because <keyword id="135899" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="midcap-stocks" source="Orion">midcap stocks</keyword> have many interesting themes that large caps do not offer. “A lot of companies in the consumption theme like Quick Service Restaurants (QSRs) or luggage companies, transportation and logistics companies, manufacturing and cap goods also fall under midcaps. Many upcoming and sunrise sectors are getting captured in the midcaps,” says Jaiprakash Toshniwal, senior equity analyst at LIC Mutual Fund. Moreover, the many successful initial public offers (IPOs) of the year also added a lot of variety if not velocity to the midcap index. “A lot of freshly listed companies have a marketcap between ₹8,000-25,000 crore which is the midcap category,” says Toshniwal. Tata Technologies, JSW Infrastructure, IREDA, and Honasa Consumer etc. are some newly listed mid cap stocks that have piqued investor interest. If the primary markets keep up with their fervour, there will be more options for investors. In the coming year, investors might become selective of their midcap bets, but won’t go slow. “Midcaps’ overall capital efficiency has improved as seen from their return on equity (RoEs) in 2023. We believe that small and midcaps have the potential to outperform large caps in the medium to long run.
