What started off as an ALS awareness drive in America is probably on the verge of becoming a worldwide phenomenon. 
 
Indian Tennis player Rohan Bopanna was the one who started this challenge in India after being nominated by former tennis player Amrit Narsimhan. After taking up the challenge, he nominated actor Rahul Bose, sports editor Digvijay Singh Deo and the entire team of Bengaluru Football club. 
 

 
While Rahul Bose decided to donate to the charity, Bengaluru FC did a group challenge and, in turn, nominated Badminton star Ashwini Ponappa, Tennis sensation Sania Mirza and the blue-eyed boy of Indian cricket Yuvraj Singh. 
 
 
 
Sania Mirza took the challenge twice, having not enough water in the bucket in the first go, and challenged fellow Tennis players Cara Black and Mahesh Bhupathi, Yuvraj Singh, her sister Anam Mirza and actor Riteish Deshmukh, thus, taking the challenge from Indian sports to Bollywood. 
 
 
 
Ashwini Ponappa completed the challenge as well and nominated fellow baddie player Jwala Gutta, swimmer Rehan Poncha and her friend and fashion designer Shravya Verma. 
 
 
 
Mahesh Bhupathi took the challenge and nominated his coach Scott Davidoff, shooter Abhinav Bindra, Abhishek Bachchan and all the members of the Kabaddi team Jaipur Pink Panthers. 
 
 
 
Riteish Deshmukh, who is in Poland shooting for his film Bangistan, produced by Excel Entertainment, went ahead to take the challenge via his <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=854831017863533&amp;set=vb.149681275045181&amp;type=2&amp;theater">Facebook account</a> and nominated his ‘good friends’ actors Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Pulkit Samrat, Siddharth Malhotra and Ashish Chowdhry. 
 
All of the above actors as well as Abhinav Bindra, Jaipur Pink Panthers, Jwala Gutta, Scott Davidoff, Rehan Poncha,and Yuvraj Singh are yet to take the challenge.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Comes To India

The Indian women’s badminton team scripted history on Thursday night by ensuring at least a bronze medal in the <keyword id="115975" type="SPORT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uber-Cup">Uber Cup</keyword>. The match was held at the Siri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi. 
 Led by <keyword id="30618" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saina-Nehwal">Saina Nehwal</keyword>, India trounced <keyword id="8692" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indonesia">Indonesia</keyword> 3-0 in the quarter-final. India will now take on <keyword id="6355311" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Japan">Japan</keyword> in the semi-final today. 
 
Saina gave India a flying start by beating world No. 23 Lindaweni Fanetri 21-17, 21-10 in the first singles. 
 
World Championship bronze medallist PV Sindhu followed it up with 21-16, 10-21, 25-23 victory over Bellaetrix Manuputty to give India a 2-0 lead. 
 <keyword id="18181" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jwala-Gutta">Jwala Gutta</keyword> and Ashwini Ponnappa won their doubles encounter 21-18, 21-18 against Greysia Polii and Nitya Krishinda Maheswari. 
Japan, on the other hand, thrashed Denmark 3-0 to proceed to the semi-finals.

Saina Nehwal Takes India To Uber Cup Semis With 3-0 Victory Over Indonesia

<keyword id="6702825" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rio-Olympics-2016">Rio Olympics 2016</keyword> is underway and yes India has not opened its medal tally as yet, but fret not, because that could be changing soon. 
 
Some of our sportspersons lost the chance to get the medal by a whisker as shooter Abhinav Bindra, rower Dattu Bhokanal and judoka Avtar Singh finished fourth, missing the third spot by a point or two. 
 
Indian weight-lifter Sathish Sivalingam was also out of the medal bracket and India’s hope for medals from Jitu Rai, Gagan Narang and Heena Sidhu also ended. 
 
Indian swimmers Sajan Prakash, Shivani Kataria were also knocked out of the competition and even archer laxmirani Majhi crashed out of women’s individual archery event. 
 But, there is still hope for India, which has sent its largest contingent ever, as boxers <keyword id="23353" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="manoj-kumar">Manoj Kumar</keyword>, Vikas Krishnan and gymnast Dipa Karmakar are still in the foray. 
 Our badminton stars Jwala Gutta, <keyword id="30618" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saina-Nehwal">Saina Nehwal</keyword> and wrestlers <keyword id="157783" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Yogeshwar-Dutt">Yogeshwar Dutt</keyword> and Narsingh Yadav are still to compete and there are bright chances for India to win a medal there. 
 
The biggest thing is to compete at Olympics as with given infrastructure in India, achieving this level of feat in sporting era in itself is commendable and we all should be proud of our sportpersons who are taking the pressure, sweating it out and doing everything they can for India.

India still stands many chances to win medals at Rio Olympics 2016. These are the hopefuls

This will be the second time that India will host the premier tournament, which is held every year except for the Olympic year. India had hosted the BWF World Championships in Hyderabad in 2009. Since then, India has played host to various major badminton tournaments including the 2014 <keyword id="2247694" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Thomas-and-Uber-Cup-Finals">Thomas and Uber Cup Finals</keyword>, the Asian Championships apart from the annual BWF Super 500 event, the Yonex-Sunrise India Open. <keyword id="114605" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Badminton-Association-of-India">Badminton Association of India</keyword> (<keyword id="157582" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BAI">BAI</keyword>) president Himanta Biswa Sarma is confident that hosting the World Championships in 2026 would help Indian badminton take bigger steps towards becoming a world powerhouse. "Staging a tournament of the stature will be a great achievement for us at the Badminton Association of India as well as for the country. "We are thankful to BWF for considering India for badminton's most prestigious and premier tournament and I believe with world-class shuttlers coming to participate will not only be a great opportunity and motivation for the enthusiasts of the game and for the sport to see a huge growth across the country," added Sarma. The Covid-19 pandemic, which brought sporting activities to a halt in 2020, has forced the BWF to rejig its international tournament calendar, with the sport's governing body shifting the 2021 Sudirman Cup from Suzhou, China to Vantaa, Finland. The 2023 Sudirman Cup, which was originally allotted to India, will now be hosted in Suzhou, China. India has so far won 10 World Championships medals with reigning champion <keyword id="501707" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="PV-Sindhu">PV Sindhu</keyword> leading the chart with a gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, while Prakash Padukone won India's first medal at the World Championships in 1983. India to host badminton world championships in 2026, after hosting it in 2009

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in India affecting one in 28 women and it is also the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. Doctors of various healthcare institutions in Hyderabad say the lack of early detection of the disease is the main reason causing the death of women when they reach advanced stages of cancer. They have advised women to stay cautious of their health to ensure they do not neglect any cancerous symptoms. October is commemorated as 'Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and healthcare practitioners have appealed to the government to take necessary steps to spread awareness about this deadly disease even across rural areas. "Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Where mammography facilities are not available, breast self-examination can be taught to the women so that cancers of at least 2-3 cm in size can be diagnosed," said Dr M. Jwala Srikala Consultant Radiologist, KIMS Hospital. According to her, even illiterate women also can test themselves at home by pressing their breasts gently with the middle three fingers and sense if any lumps are there. "They should immediately consult a doctor if they find any lump in the breast. Early detection leads to giving qualitative life to the patients," she said. Dr M Ravi <keyword id="179591" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kumar-reddy" source="Orion">Kumar Reddy</keyword>, Consultant Surgical Oncologist, <keyword id="15290178" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="amor-hospitals" source="Orion">Amor Hospitals</keyword>, pointed out that one in every four cancer patients are a victim of breast cancer disease, and in terms of mortality, nearly 35 per cent of women die from this disease in India. "While the Asian average of these deaths is 34 per cent, the global average stands at 30 per cent, categorising this disease among the deadliest. This high mortality is due to late diagnosis of the ailment. Hence it is important that necessary steps are taken to spread awareness about this ailment, which will help save thousands of lives each year. While awareness and screening are the first steps, there is a need to take treatment closer to people to prolong survival and improve quality of life." Dr Suvarna Rai, Consultant Obstetrician &amp; Gynaecologist, SLG Hospitals, suggested that health departments, healthcare providers, educational institutions, and associations working in this space, all must come together to devise a strategy which will help enhance awareness of breast cancer disease. "It is important that young women are made aware of this deadly disease and they are taught means to detect it early. Unless such steps are taken on an urgent basis, breast cancer will spread in the country and we might lose more precious lives," he said. Dr <keyword id="15290177" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="santoshini-gowrishetty" source="Orion">Santoshini Gowrishetty</keyword>, Consultant Gynaecologist, Aware Gleneagles Global Hospital noted that breast cancer prevalence is fast growing in metro cities or in urban settings, and this is due to lifestyle changes witnessed in the cities. "Working women, due to their acquired habits or due to the stress, are falling prey to this deadly disease. The treatment of breast cancer is a complex procedure and requires a multidisciplinary approach. Tests to be conducted on breast cancer patients to administer advanced treatment protocols can only be done in a super speciality environment." Dr <keyword id="193690" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="venu-gopal" source="Orion">Venu Gopal</keyword>, General <keyword id="6382875" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="surgeon" source="Orion">Surgeon</keyword> and Managing Director, Century Hospital is of the view that women should take complete care of themselves in preventing any type of cancer, particularly breast cancer. "Drinking alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. The risk increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Being overweight or obese after menopause also increases breast cancer risk. Women who have not had children or had their first child after age 30 have a slightly higher breast cancer risk overall. Having many pregnancies and becoming pregnant at a young age reduces breast cancer risk," he explained. Surgery is an integral part of the treatment when treated with curative intent, but the entire process is a costly affair. Insurance policies and central or state government-run schemes cover partly or only a few of these modalities, resulting in patients paying from their pockets or resorting to the approved protocols, even if it is over/under-treating them. Doctors opine that the policies and schemes need to be more welcoming and be periodically updated on par with the changing trends in the management of these cancers for more people to reap the benefits. Breast cancer: Lack of early detection killing thousands of women every year

What has not gone down well for some is the way brand logo has been incorporated prominently in the borders of the garments, the fabric used and the fits. Tahiliani's team said he was unavailable for comment when PTI reached out for a response. However, he defended himself in an interview with NDTV when he said he stood by his work and said the opening ceremony was not a couture show. "We wanted the team in the colours of the tricolour as most countries follow their flag and that was visible from afar. It would have been very easy for me to send them in zardozi vests. But it's not appropriate," Tahiliani said. He added that he and his team had only three weeks to prepare the costumes. "I can't weave handloom for 300 uniforms in that time. The shoes were brocade, brocade from Benares," he told NDTV. Tahiliani also slammed "armchair critics" who accused him of charging a heavy sum for crafting these designs. "This was paid for by Tasva. It was not done for a fee, it was done to support our athletes. Asking what I was paid for it just shows their mentality," he added. Among those criticising the designer, who made headlines of another sort entirely when he dressed American reality star Kim Kardashian for the Anant Ambani-Radhika Merchant wedding, was former badminton star Jwala Gutta. (Especially when the designer was announced I had huge expectations) (sic)" she wrote, without mentioning Tahiliani's name. Gutta argued that not all women know how to wear a sari and that's why the designer should have crafted "pre draped" saris, which are a current trend. "The girls looked uncomfortable the blouse was of bad fit!! And second the colour and the print was so opposite of beautiful Indian!!! There was an opportunity for the designer to display the art of our culture through embroidery or hand paint!! "It was a work of absolute mediocrity and looked shabby!!! I really hope the sports family stops compromising on quality for our sportspersons looks on court and off court!!!! (sic)" Gutta wrote, posting photographs of herself from the 2016 Rio Olympics with fellow badminton players PV Sindhu, Ashwini Ponnappa and tennis star Rohan Bopanna. A user reshared her post and wrote: "Hello Tarun Tahiliani! I have seen better Sarees sold in Mumbai streets for Rs.200 than these ceremonial uniforms you've 'designed'. Cheap polyester like fabric, Ikat PRINT (!!!), tricolors thrown together with no imagination. Did you outsource it to an intern or come up with it in the last 3 minutes before the deadline? Such a disgrace to the rich weaving culture and history of India." There were others who were not too convinced either. Another user said designers for the Mongolia and Sri Lanka contingents did a better job dressing their teams. Others shared videos of the designs as reimagined by AI and wrote Tahiliani's design can be "easily replaced" by technology. One user said the kurtas were "creased", the blouse "poor fitting" and the sari was "not even white". "I don't know what Tarun Tahiliani was thinking while scribbling these pathetic uniforms, did our champions really bad. The women's saree look like 'before' shot in an Ujala Ad. While menswear, it's just looks a bit ..ringard if I may say in spirit of Paris! (sic)" commented another. According to Ashish Mukul, brand head, Tasva, the ceremonial attire for Team India is "crafted with a profound sense of national pride and an aim to balance tradition with modernity". In a statement, Mukul said the garments draw inspiration from the Indian flag, "symbolizing unity, and pride, which is one of the richest ways of representing India". He said the contemporary silhouettes, such as the Bundi jacket and pre-pleated sari, were carefully chosen to ensure "both comfort and functionality" for the athletes. "The fabrics, including cotton and viscose crepe, are selected for their practical and aesthetic qualities, as our athletes would be out in the open for almost 6 hours during the event. The use of Ikat-inspired prints and modern elements is a deliberate choice to reflect modern India. Our intention is to create an attire that represents India's rich heritage and ensure our athletes feel comfortable and confident," he added. Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu, who was one of the flag bearers of the Indian contingent along with table tennis legend A Sharath Kamal, had posted a series of pictures on X ahead of Friday's ceremony.
