According to a study, people who are unemployed due to brain or spine cancer may have more severe feelings of pain, discomfort, worry, and depression than people with the same illnesses who are employed. The study was published in the online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the <keyword id="1532764" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="american-academy-of-neurology" source="Orion">American Academy of Neurology</keyword>. "The financial consequences of receiving a cancer diagnosis can be great and affect a person's ability to keep their job and access health insurance," said study author <keyword id="16491601" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="heather-leeper" source="Orion">Heather Leeper</keyword>, MD, MS, of the University of Chicago, a member of the American Academy of <keyword id="72938" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="neurology" source="Orion">Neurology</keyword> and previously of the National Cancer Institute's Center for Cancer Research in Bethesda, Maryland, where the study was conducted. "This is especially true for people of working age who may have fewer financial resources than older adults who are retired and qualify for Medicare. Our research found that being unemployed due to brain and spine cancer is strongly linked with more symptoms, more difficulty being able to perform daily tasks, reduced quality of life, as well as psychological distress, which may affect a person's ability to return to work." The study involved 277 people with primary central nervous system tumors, which are caused when abnormal cells form in the tissues of the brain or spinal cord. Participants had an average age of 45. The 200 people who were employed either full-time, part-time, or self-employed were compared to 77 people who were unemployed. Participants were given assessments of their symptoms and how they affected their daily lives. One assessment measured the impact of illness or treatment on physical, mental, social, and emotional functioning within a person's overall quality of life. Questions included items like whether they have issues walking, dressing themselves, and performing usual activities, as well as what level of pain or discomfort and anxiety or depression they experience. Researchers found 25% of unemployed people reported moderate-to-severe depression symptoms compared to 8% of employed people. For anxiety, 30% of those unemployed reported moderate-to-severe anxiety symptoms compared to 15% of those employed. In rating pain or discomfort, 13% of unemployed people reported the highest level of pain or discomfort compared to 4% of employed. Those who were unemployed reported more problems with performing daily activities such as walking, washing, dressing and a reduced quality of life. Researchers found that Hispanic people were more than twice as likely to be unemployed than others. When looking specifically at people with brain tumors, unemployed people reported on average three more symptoms as moderate-to-severe than employed people did. Researchers also found that people who had an annual household income of less than $25,000 were more likely to be unemployed than employed. Conversely, they found participants with brain tumors who had an annual household income of more than $150,000 were more likely to be employed than unemployed. "Unemployment including a lack of health insurance and reduced earnings can lead to even more physical and psychological problems for people living with these brain and spine cancers," <keyword id="4689664" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="leeper" source="Orion">Leeper</keyword> added. "It is important that people be screened for these financial issues that can affect their cancer journey and that programs be developed to help minimize their impacts such as creating return-to-work programs or other forms of financial assistance." The study was a snapshot in time and did not look at changes over time in symptoms or employment. Another limitation of the study was that participants reported their symptoms and may not have remembered events correctly. Cancer diagnosis can affect a person's ability to keep a job says a study in American Academy of Neurology

The <keyword id="20461362" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Paralympic-Games" source="keywords">Paralympic Games</keyword>, now a major global event, has a history rooted in rehabilitation. The first official <keyword id="21099636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paralympic" source="keywords">Paralympic</keyword> Games was held in Rome in 1960. But its origins trace back to 1948, when neurologist Ludwig Guttmann organised the Stoke Mandeville Games in England for World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries. He believed sport could play a powerful role in rehabilitation, pushing the boundaries of human performance in ways other approaches could not. Today's Paralympic Games continue this legacy, with <keyword id="19901571" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="technology" source="keywords">technology</keyword> playing a central role in these achievements. Technology has enabled <keyword id="19929069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="athletes" source="keywords">athletes</keyword> with disabilities to reach incredible heights. However, it has also introduced new challenges, particularly in ensuring fairness and equity in competition. <h2>From simple to sophisticated</h2> In the early days, Paralympic technology was basic by today's standards. Athletes competed in regular wheelchairs and used simple strapping to assist. As the Paralympic Games grew, competitive success became increasingly prized. As a result, athletes used specialised technology to gain a competitive edge. Running blades, for example, are carbon fibre prosthetics designed to mimic natural leg movement while enhancing speed and bounciness. These blades have revolutionised track events. They enable athletes with lower-limb amputations to compete at speeds comparable to, and sometimes even faster than, able-bodied athletes. South African sprinter and convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius was the first double <keyword id="756068" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amputee" source="Orion">amputee</keyword> with running blades who competed in the London Olympics in 2012 as part of the men's 4x400 relay. <h2>A shifting conversation</h2> By the end of the 2010s, however, the conversation about <keyword id="22193615" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="assistive-technology" source="keywords">assistive technology</keyword> used by athletes had shifted from celebrating integration to debating unfair advantage. In 2019, Blake Leeper, a bilateral amputee sprinter, applied to World Athletics to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics against able-bodied athletes. The international governing body for athletics received independent scientific advice that Leeper's prosthetics gave him a competitive advantage and rejected the application. Leeper contested this decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport. But the court ruled against him. Leeper, who is African-American, appealed the decision on the grounds the scientific advice provided to World Athletics was based on racially prejudiced science. But the court rejected his appeal. It ruled the evidence to be fair and unbiased. As technology continues to advance, running blades may soon seem modest compared to what the future brings. Neuroprosthetics are a notable example. These are devices that interface with the human nervous system to overcome losses in muscular strength and endurance that result from neurological impairments such as spinal cord injury. The devices can be attached externally or surgically implanted. They can improve functions such as sitting stability and rowing machine performance. It's not hard to imagine some athletes using these devices to gain a significant - but possibly undetectable - advantage over competitors. The International Paralympic Committee has a sport equipment policy. One of the principles is that sports performance should be determined primarily by human performance, and the effect of technology and equipment should be secondary. However, upholding this principle requires enforceable rules. As technology advances, this will become increasingly challenging - just as it is in the Olympics. <h2>Levelling the playing field</h2> Technology can also play a crucial role when it comes to classifying athletes. Each of the 22 Paralympic sports uses a <keyword id="20070688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="classification" source="keywords">classification</keyword> system to ensure competition is fair and meaningful. Each athlete is classified according to the type and severity of their impairment. However, classification is not without its challenges. Despite significant research advances, the best and most valid processes available still rely on expert judgement. And even when classifiers follow strict guidelines, there is an incredibly wide array of test results for classifiers to consider. Many classification tests also require athletes to give a full effort. This leaves open the possibility an athlete wishing to gain an unfair competitive advantage might deliberately underperform on these tests to exaggerate their impairment severity. They might then be placed in a class of athletes with more severe impairments. However, the diversity of para athletes is enormous and the process of recruiting and filming a representative sample of high-level para athletes will not be easy. The system also can't fully protect against athletes deliberately under-performing. But it is able to detect variations in performance that occur over time which would not otherwise be detectable to the human eye. This will give greater confidence in the accuracy of the athlete's classification. Once the system is developed, its success will also depend on gaining the trust of the whole Paralympic community. Using technology to gain an unfair advantage is as old as sport itself. But technology is also the very tool we must use to ensure fairness and to level the playing field.

The important thing is to minimize risks where possible, but you can't remove all risk while pursuing extreme skiing."If caught in an avalanche, skiers are <a href="https://www.getprepared.gc.ca/cnt/hzd/vlchs-drng-en.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advised</a> to try to grab onto anything solid to avoid being swept away, keep their mouths closed and try to move to the side of the avalanche.

The two kept driving in front of each other and slamming their brakes. In response someone in the truck threw a water bottle at the sedan, and then Allison fired a shot at the sedan and sped off, Leeper said, according to Fox5. Hale pulled out his gun when he realized his daughter had been shot and then fired multiple shots at Allison's sedan striking his daughter, Fox5 reported. The chase came to an end when the two drivers saw a patrol car and pulled over, according to the outlet. "What is scarier than one crazy driver with a gun? Two crazy drivers with a gun," Leeper said. "Thankfully, no one was killed in this incident but it could've very easily turned out that way because two people were acting stupid and let their tempers get the best of them."
