Air India Express is a wholly-owned subsidiary of state-run carrier Air India and it mostly services the Gulf nations and Singapore. On the other hand, IndiGo Airlines, India’s largest passenger airline with a market share of 39.5%, caters to eight international destinations, including Nepal, Oman, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and <keyword id="6354870" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Arab-Emirates">United Arab Emirates</keyword> (Dubai and Sharjah), <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-largest-passenger-airline-is-about-to-add-24-international-destinations-to-its-arsenal/articleshow/64177892.cms">for now</a>. <br /><br />According to the report, a whopping 24 of this year’s top 30 cheapest international airlines are based in Asia or the Middle East with AirAsia X, Air India Express and Indonesia AirAsia forming the top three.<br /><br />The third edition of the report analysed over 1.5 million economy-class prices from 200 airlines, finding the best value airlines for travellers. The data scientist team analysed economy-class airfares displayed by Rome2rio during the first two months of this year, totalling some 1.5 million price points, to provide a snapshot of global pricing (in US$ per km). <br /><br />Based on this, Air India Express had an average cost of US$0.08 per km (0.6 miles) and IndiGo US$ 0.10 per km. India’s Jet Airways also made it to the list at 12th place, followed by Air India at 13th position. <br /><br />Other carriers that made it to the top ten were Etihad, Ryanair, Qantas, Wow Air and <keyword id="670879" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Virgin-Australia">Virgin Australia</keyword>. Four Indian airline carriers are amongst the top 15 world’s cheapest airlines worldwide

<br /><ul><li><strong>181 pilots of scheduled and non-scheduled operators in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> were reported drunk in the alcohol test between 2015 and 2018.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>India’s civil aviation minister Jayant Sinha said 43 pilots were found to have consumed alcohol during the tests in 2015. <br /></strong></li><li><strong>In 2018 alone the number of such cases was 49. <br /></strong></li></ul>Finding out that the pilot on an airline failed an alcohol test just before a flight is the stuff of nightmares. Yet, it appears that scenario has become quite common in India.<br /><br />As many as 181 pilots of scheduled and non-scheduled airline operators failed alcohol tests between 2015 and 2018, Economic Times <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/181-pilots-tested-positive-for-alcohol-during-2015-2018-aviation-min/articleshow/67075356.cms">reported</a>, citing India’s civil aviation ministry. <br /><br />Speaking about the number of such cases, where the test results showed ‘positive’, the Civil Aviation Minister Jayant Sinha said 43 pilots were found drunk in 2015 while the number of pilots who failed the test in 2016 stood at 44. <br /><br />There was certainly no drop in such cases in the next two years. In 2017 and 2018, the number of cases reported was 45 and 49 respectively. <br /><br />Delhi and Mumbai, which are also the prime cities to board flights in India, lead the list of cases where pilots have failed in alcohol test, reported India Today citing an RTI filed by an Indian media house. Both the cities have reported 18 cases each. The top 10 were determined from the 385 airlines the organization monitors, according to AirlineRatings.</p><p><a href="https://www.airlineratings.com/news/top-twenty-safest-airlines-2022/">Unlike the agency's top 20 list for the world's safest airlines</a>, which ranks in order from highest to lowest, low-cost carriers are listed alphabetically.</p><p>This means AirlineRatings does not distinguish who came out on top, though all 10 boast a seven-star safety rating, except for Jetstar Japan under the Jetstar Group. According to <a href="https://www.iata.org/en/programs/safety/audit/iosa/registry?search=jetstar&amp;ordering=Relevance">The International Air Transport Association</a>, the airline is absent from its audit registry. AirlineRatings' <a href="https://www.airlineratings.com/ratings/jetstar-japan/">website</a> has given the carrier a six-star safety rating instead of seven.</p><p>AirlineRatings <a href="https://www.airlineratings.com/safety-rating-criteria/">clarified</a> that airlines without IATA's Operational Safety Audit, or IOSA, are not unsafe carriers, but those that have conducted and passed the audit "comply with the most stringent of rules and practices governing aviation safety."</p><p>The world's 10 safest low-cost carriers include three from the US, including <keyword id="12466133" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="allegiant" source="Orion">Allegiant</keyword>, Frontier, and JetBlue. That share was down to 7.8% at the end of March 2020. <p>The <a href="http://www.jacdec.de/">Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre</a> (JACDEC), which collects information about aviation accidents and safety, has <a href="http://www.jacdec.de/jacdec_safety_ranking_2012.htm">published its annual Airline Safety Ranking</a>.</p>
<p><span>The ratings take into account the number and deadliness of hull loss accidents and serious incidents in the last 30 years of operation in relation to passenger miles flown. The ratings also take into account </span>international safety benchmarks such as the IOSA Audit and the USOAP country factor, along with a time factor which increases the effect of recent accidents.</p>
<p>The results do not account for the cause of hull losses or whether the airline is at fault, so they are an imperfect measure of safety.</p>

5 Airlines With The Most Safety Problems According To JACDEC

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Air India is undergoing a complete transformation after years of decline under government control.</li><li>The airline has ordered hundreds of new aircraft and is investing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-india-new-airbus-a350-big-improvement-tour-review-2024-1">$400 million in cabin retrofits</a>.</li></ul><p>Between 1932 and 2021, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-india-ownership-comes-full-circle-tata-sons-bid-win-2021-10">Air India went from being the gold standard of aviation</a> under the Tata Group to a nationalized airline in complete disarray.</p><p>People flying Air India's older planes routinely faced bad customer service, poor reliability, dirty cabins, and broken seats patched with duct tape. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-india-business-class-a350-compared-to-777-legacy-2024-2?mrfhud=true">Even in business class.</a></p><p>The downfall started in 1953 when the Indian government took over, stripping control away from the Tata Group.</p><p>However, with government ownership proving disastrous and Air India in desperate need of modernization, the Tatas announced a deal to buy the company back in 2021 and quickly got to work with a completely new brand identity. </p><p>"The list of things to do at Air India, and the list of opportunities ahead of us, are astonishing," the airline's new CEO, Campbell Wilson, told Business Insider in January. "And, in most of these cases, it is not a matter of 'Is there a case to do it?' but 'What do we do first?'"</p><p>Some of the changes are less in-your-face, like an updated mobile app and website and a new inflight safety <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al51WZcN2_U">video</a>.</p><p>However, customers will soon start seeing the "new Air India" everywhere, thanks to the Tata Group's huge multimillion-dollar investments in its planes, products, and people.</p><h2>A record Airbus and Boeing order</h2><div type="image" title="The author standing in front of the Air India A350." height="3024" width="4032" msid="108073593" hostid="261" sizebytes="951578"></div><p>At the Paris Airshow in June 2023, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbus-boeing-record-order-500-planes-india-airline-indigo-report-2023-6">Air India announced orders for a record 470 Airbus and Boeing</a> aircraft, including 40 Airbus A350s, 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 10 Boeing 777Xs, 140 Airbus A320neos, 70 Airbus A321neos, and 190 Boeing 737 Maxs.</p><p>The aircraft, worth an estimated $70 billion at list price, will sport <a target="_blank" href="https://www.airindia.com/content/dam/air-india/about-us/pdf/AirIndia-Ournewbrand.pdf">Air India's new livery and logo</a>.</p><p>The latter is known as "The Vista." Air India says it's "inspired by the peak of the gold window frame" and signifies "limitless possibilities, progressiveness, and the airline's bold, confident outlook for the future."</p><div type="image" title="The gold Vista logo on a purple inflight menu." height="2323" width="3097" msid="108073595" hostid="261" sizebytes="677462"></div><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-india-business-class-a350-compared-to-777-legacy-2024-2">first delivery was an Airbus A350-900</a> in December. The new plane launched on domestic routes, like Bengaluru and Mumbai, in January and will eventually launch overseas, Air India says. It's very likely to fly to the US, though Air India has yet to release specific cities.</p><p>"We are proud to be working with all our partners in this journey to rebuild a global airline which reflects India taking a more confident posture around the world," Wilson said. </p><h2>Passenger comfort is getting a much-needed refresh</h2><div type="image" title="Air India new business class." height="3024" width="4032" msid="108073597" hostid="261" sizebytes="1079636"></div><p>The legacy cabins on Air India's Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 aircraft haven't seen an upgrade in years and are some of the main reasons the airline has such a poor reputation. </p><p>Travelers regularly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-india-economy-cabin-i-flew-miserable-bad-seats-review-2024-2">complain of things like the in-flight entertainment not working</a> and stains on the carpet. Air India's business class is also way behind industry standards.</p><p>Most notably, business sports a 2×3×2 layout — meaning travelers can still be assigned a dreaded middle seat. The plane also sports premium economy and upgraded coach seats.</p><div type="image" title="New economy cabin on Air India with red seats and grey headrests." height="3024" width="4032" msid="108073607" hostid="261" sizebytes="692510"></div><p>"By the end of 2025, the entire legacy widebody fleet will also be upgraded to match what we're getting on the A350," Wilson told BI, "So, essentially, our fleet will be completely reborn by then."</p><h2>Flight attendants and pilots are getting a makeover</h2><p>In December, Air India released photos of its new crew <a target="_blank" href="https://www.airindia.com/content/dam/air-india/pdfs/media-centre/media_release_air_india_unveils_new_uniforms_for_crew_12_Dec_2023.pdf">uniforms</a>.</p><p>Created by Indian designer Manish Malhotra, the collection features the airline's new red- and purple-heavy color scheme with items like a ready-to-wear saree (which can be worn with pants) for female flight attendants and a bandh gala for male flight attendants.</p><p>Pilots will sport a black suit with the Vista logo, "signifying professionalism, timelessness, and the gravitas of the flying profession."</p><div type="image" title="Air India new cabin crew and pilot uniforms. Ground staff, engineers, and security personnel are also set to get new uniforms, which Air India said it will reveal in "due course."</p>

<br /><ul><li>India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is currently investigating concerns of older generation 15-inch MacBook Pros posing a threat with faulty batteries which may explode and catch fire.<br /></li><li>The US and European Union aviation authorities have already told airlines to prohibit travellers from bringing the affected MacBook Pro laptops on board.<br /></li><li>But the twenty plus models of HP laptops, which were also recalled due to faulty battery issues, are still free to travel on any airline.<br /></li></ul>If you own one of Apple's faulty older generation 15-inch MacBook Pros, you can't carry it aboard most foreign airlines. Now, domestic airlines in India might have to implement a ban on the affected laptops too.<br /><br />The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is currently investigating concerns that older MacBook Pros are overheating and catching on fire, according to a report in the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/foreign-airlines-ban-some-macbook-pro-models-on-india-flights/articleshow/70834128.cms">Times of India</a>. <br /><br />"The DGCA is examining the issue and if need be, will do the needful," said a senior official at the organisation.<br /><br /><strong>Why ban 15-inch MacBook Pros?<br /></strong><br />The apprehension against allowing older generation 15-inch Apple MacBook Pros on aircrafts comes from Apple's decision to recall the model which was sold between September 2015 and February 2017.<br /><br />Apple said that these laptops "may overheat and pose a fire safety risk". In order to check whether or not your laptop is one of the affected, you cross check your product serial number on Apple's <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-in/15-inch-macbook-pro-battery-recall">website</a>.<br /><br />In case your laptop is one of the "limited number" that was affected, your laptop's battery will have to be replaced.<br /><br />Even if you do, you won't be able to take your laptop on a plane.<br /><br />Any laptop that comes with the product label, "MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015" product tag won't be allowed on any airline in India if a ban is implemented by the DGCA.<br /><br /><strong>Not the first time<br /></strong><br />There's a lot of anxiety over a limited number of laptops being recalled. It might not have been widely publicised in the past, but this isn't the first time that laptops are being called back over battery issues. <br /><br />In early 2018, Hewlett Packard (HP) had a similar issue where they recalled laptops because it was found that certain models had batteries, which could overheat and catch fire. <br /><br />Again in 2019, HP expanded that recall asking users to check their batteries again even if they had been replaced in the last recall.<br /><br /><em>(insert list)</em><br /><br />The list of potentially affected models has over 20 names on the list — and none of them are banned from being on an airplane.<br /><br /><strong>Who has banned 15-inch MacBook Pros?<br /></strong>The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (ASA) issued a warning asking airlines to follow 2017 rules. <br />That means a complete ban on the affected models. You can't take the laptop with you as carry-on luggage or check it in as cargo.<br /><br />Foreign aircraft operators like Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways have already started implementing the ban on older MacBook Pros. Indian airlines could ban 15-inch MacBook Pros — but other laptops with faulty batteries continue to fly

As many as five other European airlines, along with Virgin America have either shut shop or merged with others in the past year and a half.<br /><br />Joining this notorious list are Iceland-based WOW Air, Germania from Germany, Denmark-based Primera, Cyprus’s Cobalt Air and UK’s Flybmi, according to a report by CARE Ratings. A range of reasons like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/No-fewer-than-5-European-airlines-have-collapsed-since-October-Here-they-are-/Wow-Air-defunct-March-2019-/slideshow/68673329.cms">failed expansions</a>, rise in crude and carbon costs, and devaluation of the Euro against the Dollar, led to their demise. <br /><br />However, many <keyword id="140941" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="International-airlines">international airlines</keyword> do not face the additional hardships that Indian operators do, like excessive taxation on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). Domestic airlines in India pay 1.4 times the amount international peers do, due to state-level taxes, CARE ratings said, in its report on Indian airlines. <br /><br />This factor, along with increased crude oil prices and currency volatility in the last two years, took a toll on all domestic airlines in India, not just Jet.<br /><br /><strong>Discounted Growth</strong> <br /><br />Indian airlines have been offering discounts in their war to win market share. And, this has affected their profits as they charged fares that are one-third of what is charged in developed countries, on major routes. <br /><br />All the three listed airlines posted net losses for the nine months ending 2018-19. Indigo, which has a 40% market share, posted Rs 433 crore net loss. Jet Airways posted a massive net loss of RS 3,208 crore while SpiceJet’s was at RS 372 crore. <br /><br /><strong>Damned if you do, damned if you don’t</strong><br /><br />The only good news for Indian airlines is its robust demand and capacity utilisation. But it won’t bring in many advantages, since in the Indian market, it coincides with lower airfares. <br /><br />Jet’s grounding is the only silver lining for the aviation industry, as lower competition has increased airfares and margins will improve.<br /><br />“Domestic passenger traffic growth during the year would moderate to 8-12%, as fares remain high. With Jet Airways’ entire fleet grounded, it would take considerable time for domestic airlines to make up for the extinguished seat inventory,” CARE says.<br /><br />And the ability of airlines to keep fares low, largely depends on how crude oil prices will move. <br /><br />If crude oil prices remain steady, all Indian airlines can post profits by the end of March 2020, all thanks to Jet. Considering that<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/grounded-jet-loses-one-more-senior-executive/articleshow/69323211.cms"> top executives</a> have been quitting the company even as the sale process is on, Jet might have a tougher time getting back in the air. <br />
