Here's the scorecard:
France's CAC 40 is down 0.07%.
Germany's DAX is down 0.4%. 
Spain's IBEX is up 0.2%
Italy's FTSE MIB is down 0.07%.
Britain's FTSE 100 is up 0.3%.
Asian markets closed in the red. Nikkei's 225 closed down 0.6%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index closed down 0.4%.
U.S. futures are down, with Dow futures down 1 point and S&amp;P futures down 0.4 points.
The U.S. Census will release its advance <a href="http://www.census.gov/manufacturing/m3/" target="_blank">report on new orders</a> for for durable goods in July. Economists estimate orders surged 7.1% last month due an unusual number of plane orders. 
The S&amp;P/Case-Shiller home price index is expected to show that home prices in 20 major cities went nowhere month-over-month in June and prices were 8.24% higher year-over-year. 
Consumer confidence data is expected to show a drop in August to 88.5 from 90.9 in July. 
<a href="https://www.richmondfed.org/research/regional_economy/surveys_of_business_conditions/manufacturing/release_schedule/index.cfm" target="_blank">Richmond's Fed manufacturing index</a> will be released at 10:00 a.m. ET. Economists estimate this regional activity index fell to 6 in August from 7 in July.

European Markets Are Mixed, Asian Markets Closed Down

For the week, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/closing-bell-february-1-2013-2013-2">S&amp;P closed up</a>, but the Dow closed down.

<li>The two biggest economies in the world announced their trade balance figures. </li>
<li>Last night, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-january-trade-beats-expectations-2013-2">China's January trade figures</a> crushed expectations. Imports surged 28.8 percent, which was way ahead of the expectation of 23.5 percent growth. Exports jumped 25 percent sailing past expectations for 17.5 percent growth. In other words, consumption is robust in the world's second largest economy. And all of its customers, which includes almost every major economy in the world, are healthier than expected.</li>
<li>"They could be heavily distorted by the [Chinese New Year] holidays (note there are 22 working days in Jan this year versus 17 in Jan last year)," wrote <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-january-trade-beats-expectations-2013-2">Bank of America's Ting Lu</a> in a note to clients.</li>
<li>In the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/december-international-trade-data-2013-2">U.S., the trade deficit plummeted</a> at a breathtaking 20.7 percent to $38.5 billion. Economists were expecting it to narrow to $46.0 billion. Much of this shrinkage was due to a huge decline in energy imports and a big jump in energy exports. Bloomberg notes that this was the <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-08/trade-deficit-in-u-s-plunges-on-record-petroleum-exports.html">lowest petroleum deficit </a>since August 2009. For the full year, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/american-crude-imports-are-plummeting-2013-2">barrels of crude oil imported</a> fell to its lowest level since 1997.</li>

STOCKS RALLY: Here's What You Need To Know

And now the top stories:

<li>At one point today, the S&amp;P 500 climbed past <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sp-500-hits-1500-2013-1">1,500</a> for the first time since 2007. The index isn't too far from its all-time high of <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/49208910/SampP_500_to_Hit_Record_High_in_2013_Strategist">1,565</a>, which it hit on October 9, 2007.</li>
<li>Helping stocks today was an encouraging jobs report. According to the Labor Department, initial <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/january-24-initial-jobless-claims-2013-1">jobless claims fell to 330k</a>, the lowest level since January 2008. This was much lower than economists' expectation.</li>
<li>However, the Wall Street Journal's Vincent Cignarella raises some doubts about the accuracy of the number. According to a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/california-initial-jobless-claims-2013-1">Labor Department analyst</a> he spoke to, California and Virginia provided estimates, not actual numbers, for today's report. Furthermore, the DoL apparently had to make its own estimate for Hawaii, which did not provide jobless claims data. Cignarella cited a research firm that believes the estimates may be lowballing the real claims numbers.</li>
<li>Today's gain in the stock market is remarkable, especially considering the 12 percent drop in Apple, a stock that accounts for a major share of the S&amp;P 500. Yesterday, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-q1-earnings-2013-1">Apple announced Q4 earnings</a> that came in ahead of expectations. However, most other metrics were disappointing. In particular, the company reported only 47.8 million iPhone sales during the quarter, which was less than the 50 million expected. iPad and Mac sales were also a little light.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-q4-2012-earnings-2013-1">Netflix</a>, on the other hand, saw shares surge over 40 percent. The company announced blowout earnings of $0.13 per share. Analyst were looking for a loss of $0.13. Revenue was also much stronger than expected.</li>
<li>It's still earnings season. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-earnings-2013-1">Microsoft</a> and Starbucks announce their quarterly financial results after the <keyword id="149333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="closing-bell">closing bell</keyword>. STOCKS RISE, APPLE GETS DESTROYED: Here's What You Need To Know

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>European markets are bouncing back early Thursday morning, despite <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-german-exports-plunge-by-largest-amount-in-five-and-a-half-years-2014-10">bad export data out of Germany</a>. Exports fell 5.8% in August, the biggest drop since 2009. 
Here's the scorecard:
France's CAC 40 is up 0.84%
Spain's IBEX is up 0.67%
Italy's FTSE MIB is up 0.49%%
Britain's FTSE 100 is up 0.64%
Germany's DAX is up 1.21%, leading the way again.
Asian markets closed mixed. The Hang Seng bounced back overnight, closing up 1.17%, while the Nikkei closed down at 0.75%. 
US futures are mostly flat. S&amp;P futures are up 0.01% and Dow futures are down 0.02%. 
From Europe, the Bank of England's latest decision on monetary policy is out at 7:00 a.m. ET and European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi is making a speech at 12.00 p.m. ET. Analysts will be looking for any hint of further easing, as the outlook for the Eurozone seems to get grimmer by the day.
In the US, jobless claims come out 8.30 a.m. ET. Economists estimate weekly claims climbed to 294,000 from 287,000 a week ago.
We'll also get US factory orders. Economists estimate orders fell by 9.5% in August.

European Markets Are Up, Asian Markets Closed Mixed, US Futures Are Flat

Here's the scorecard, so far:
France's CAC 40 is up 0.19%
Spain's IBEX is down 0.16%
Italy's FTSE MIB is down 1.43%
Britain's FTSE 100 is up 0.43%
Germany's DAX is up 0.65%
Asian markets had a good trading day and closed way up. The Nikkei finished up 1.46%. The Hang Seng closed up 1.27%.
US futures are basically flat: The S&amp;P is up 0.25 points and the Dow is down 13 points. 
Mortgage lending figures from the Bank of England are out at 5:30 a.m. ET, which should give some indication of the health of the housing market in September. Analysts are expecting a slight dip.
From the US later, the major scheduled news is the Federal Reserve's announcement on rates and QE at 2 p.m. ET. Most importantly, despite the volatility of recent weeks, they are expected to taper the last of the country's quantitative easing purchases and end QE3.

European Markets Are Mixed, Asian Markets Closed Way Up

The Sensex lost nearly 500 points on Monday as investors feared a tit-for-tat trade battle between the US and India after the latter raised tariffs on 28 US items in retaliation to US tariffs. The US had raised tariffs on Indian aluminium and steel last year and had ended India's $5.6 billion trade concessions under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) programme earlier this year. Besides, the US-China trade tension also weighed on the investor sentiments. Caution was also seen ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting which will start on June 18-19. "Domestic market has been caught in a bearish grip as investors are increasingly turning cautious led by global trade war which has got murkier. Additionally, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East triggered a sudden spurt in oil prices," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services Ltd. "Domestic market consolidation will be maintained till global events unfolds like central bank and GST council meet this week. Consolidation was broad based with metals, auto, pharma and financials under performing," he added. Metal stocks lost the most over slowdown fears. The Nifty metal index declined by 2.83 per cent. The Sensex, after trading in the red throughout the day, closed 491.28 points or 1.25 per cent lower at 38,960.79. The Nifty also shed 148.45 points or 1.26 per cent to settled at 11,674.85. Investor fear was also evident as the India Vix shot up by over 6 per cent. "Local investors will be worried as to how US could react to this (India's raising tarifffs). However, FIIs will wait for any such move by the US before feeling the Indian market," Deepak Jasani of HDFC Securities told IANS. "$250-400 million is not a big number, but 28 items consist of almonds, walnuts and apples which affect their farmers. This could trigger a response... which will not bode well for the Indian markets," he added. Tata Steel, Tata Motors, ONGC, Vedanta and index heavyweight Reliance Industries lost the most during the day's trade while Yes Bank and Coal India and Insosys were the only scrips who managed to finish in the green on the BSE. Indian stock market is spooked by the trade tariffs war with US

The Italian stock market closed Monday's session up just 0.7 percent.
Earlier, Italian stocks were up as much as 4 percent, but news that former Prime Minister Silvio <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/italian-election-results-2013-2">Berlusconi was making a comeback in the polls</a> sent stocks reeling. They even turned negative near the end of the day before rebounding a bit.
Darkhorse anti-establishment candidate Beppe Grillo garnered a significant share of the vote as well.
The chart below shows how the FTSE MIB 35 turned down sharply after making big gains earlier on news that market-friendly candidate Pier Luigi Bersani was leading decisively:

EARLIER: The first exit polls from the Italian elections are out, and Italian markets are liking the news.
Center-left candidate Pier Luigi Bersani – seen as the best outcome for markets, as well as the most likely – <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/italian-election-results-2013-2">looks set to win the election.</a>
The FTSE MIB 35 is up nearly 3 percent on the news.
Miller Tabak Chief Economic Strategist Andrew Wilkinson sent out some color following the news:
At 9am Et Sky News ran the headline claiming that an exit poll of Italian voters would return a Bersani-Monti coalition and probably the most market-friendly outcome. An RAI poll projects Bersani would win 38% in the senate vote against Berlusconi and would win 32%. Bersani is predicted to win 37% of the chamber vote compared to 31% for Berlusconi. Italian government bond yields were already pre-empting a positive outcome with BTPs lower by 11bps ahead of the headline. Since then, yields have doubled their decline for the session further encouraging a risk-on attitude across the continent. The 10-year yield is currently lower by 23bps at 4.216% to its lowest so far this month. Stocks in Milan immediately jumped building on an already bullish session. The FTSEMIB advanced to a 475-point gain (+2.93%) while across the region the Eurostoxx index is now higher by 2.46%.
