Technology is helping enterprises meet their sustainability goals In March, in Antarctica, an ice shelf the size of New York City collapsed due to record high temperatures. It is just one of the symptoms of the climate crisis that affects all of us. Already, millions of people have had their homes or businesses damaged and some are losing their lives in fires, floods, droughts, and storms. Climate crisis is here, and we need to act with urgency because the future of climate change is in our hands. The global pandemic has been a wake-up call for enterprises to consider environmental sustainability as a business imperative. Business Insider India caught up with Dr. <keyword id="14327015" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tanya-morton" source="Orion">Tanya Morton</keyword>, the worldwide director of customer success engineering for <keyword id="1682531" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mathworks" source="Orion">MathWorks</keyword>, to understand how organizations are leveraging emerging technologies like artificial intelligence to achieve their environmental sustainability goals. Tanya has worked at the forefront of innovation, engineering, and science for over 26 years. She is passionate about sustainability and leads an initiative to support MathWorks customers in understanding and tackling climate change. Edited excerpts: The ongoing global climate crisis is a serious cause for concern for individuals and businesses alike. Quite reasonably, sustainability is a core priority for enterprises in post-pandemic recovery. What do you think is the impact of this crisis on companies’ sustainability goals today? The impact is significant. It is great to see how many companies are starting to take action to address the climate crisis. <keyword id="87266" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="stakeholder" source="Orion">Stakeholder</keyword> capitalism imagines corporations as being responsible not only to their shareholders but to their employees, suppliers, communities, and the environment. For example, over 5,000 businesses have signed up for the Race to Zero global campaign and have committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. It is part of a growing movement to re-examine how companies operate—and for whom. To ensure a sustainable future, all companies need to increase their actions to address climate change. That is why MathWorks is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2023. Tell us about how AI is helping organizations accelerate global sustainability efforts? AI and Cloud technologies accelerate climate research and help us fully understand the scale and extent of the climate crisis. An example I recently covered in my talk at MathWorks’ flagship event, MATLAB EXPO, was about drought. Drought is devastating to crop harvests and can make local communities vulnerable, both from a health perspective and economically. Researchers studied a river basin in Ethiopia and used AI to better predict when drought may occur. This allows communities to be better supported through difficult times. AI also plays a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For example, AI applied in food systems can help better monitor crop yields, reduce the need for chemicals and excess water through precision agriculture, and minimize food waste through forecasting demand and identifying spoiled produce. AI also supports the megatrend called the electrification of everything that is critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The electrification of everything refers to the twin pair of generating electricity from renewable sources, then using electricity as the primary energy source. AI supports renewable energy generation, for example, via the design of more efficient and reliable offshore wind farms. It supports the efficient usage of electricity too, for example, machine learning is being used to match energy generation and demand in real-time, realizing more fully the potential of smart grids. MathWorks’ MATLAB and Simulink are used by millions of engineers and scientists to analyze data, develop algorithms, and create models. How do these products help companies meet their sustainability goals? Researchers and developers worldwide are analyzing trends and designing solutions in response to climate change with MATLAB and Simulink. You can view their work, including clean energy products, scientific papers, and financial models on MathWorks climate research and development webpage. With MathWorks tools you can computationally model energy generators and storage devices such as wind turbines, batteries, and solar panels. It can be dangerous and expensive to do research and testing with the real system - you don't want battery fires or snapping turbine blades. Modelling and simulation can help plug this gap. Can you give us some examples of that? An example of MathWorks helping bring green technologies to market is through our work with Ather, an electric two-wheeler company from Bangalore. When the company began, they did not have the time, money, or people to build prototypes for each vehicle. This problem was solved by using MATLAB and Simulink to scale up the speed of testing. Ather scooters come equipped with a touchscreen GPS, remote diagnostics based on data patterns of other users, and an intelligent battery that can autonomously change modes to ensure the highest efficiency. With MATLAB, Simulink, and Model-Based Design, the company identified and validated the best ideas through simulation, making it possible to deliver a more full-featured scooter in less time. Another startup, Boston Metal, introduced groundbreaking technology aimed at producing steel in a more sustainable and cheaper way. The patented technology, <keyword id="14327016" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="molten-oxide-electrolysis" source="Orion">Molten Oxide Electrolysis</keyword> (MOE), replaces traditional processes through the use of direct electric current to separate chemical compounds. Boston Metal’s method produces liquid iron with a byproduct of oxygen instead of carbon, a cleaner and simpler process. You spoke about electrification earlier. Could you give us insights into MathWorks’ electrification efforts for climate change issues across sectors such as automotive, energy, <keyword id="6354525" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="healthcare" source="Orion">healthcare</keyword>, etc.? There is a growing demand for engineers to meet the worldwide demand for electric vehicles (EVs). To address this, MathWorks along with Bosch and NIT Calicut jointly created and delivered a new final-year undergraduate course, Electric Vehicle System Engineering. This is a good example of collaboration between academia and industry to address the talent shortage. We work with various industry associations to deliver professional development programmes for working professionals to help build skills around electrification. Many incubators and accelerators across the world have been partnering with us through the MathWorks Accelerator Program. We have signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with governmental organizations like Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) to extend this to hundreds of accelerators across the country. We are seeing several start-ups, including those in areas like two-wheeler electric vehicles, healthcare, and sustainable engineering, accelerating their product development through the benefits offered through this programme. AI aids the megatrend of electrification of everything which can reduce GHGs

To empower domestic tech startups in the <keyword id="107950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence" source="Orion">artificial intelligence</keyword> (AI) domain, IT industry's apex body <keyword id="6372077" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="nasscom" source="Orion">Nasscom</keyword> on Thursday announced the selection of 26 startups for its inaugural '<keyword id="15777223" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="generative-ai" source="Orion">Generative AI</keyword> Foundry' programme. The 12-month programme, partnered with more than 30 organisations from industry and the investor community, will see select partners investing up to $25 million in the most promising startups. Moreover, investors will extend support in various forms, catalysing growth and innovation, said Nasscom. "Unlocking the full potential of generative AI startups for India, and from India for the world, will not only require rigorous assessment of sustainable whitespace opportunities in various sectors, but will also require innovative thinking towards inviting patient capital and facilitating compute capabilities at scale," said <keyword id="875687" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Debjani-Ghosh" source="Orion">Debjani Ghosh</keyword>, President, Nasscom. The startups were selected from more than 70 applicants. The average startup in the cohort is 2-year-old and has already raised half a million dollars from institutional investors. The startups offer solutions that generate text, audio, code, video/image, and multimodal output with strong use cases for retail, media and entertainment, banking and financial services, and various functions of the enterprise. Some of the programme partners include Anthill Ventures, Broadridge, Capgemini, Centific, Chiratae Ventures, Cigniti, eClerx, Endiya Partners, GitHub, <keyword id="9837460" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jio-gennext" source="Orion">Jio GenNext</keyword>, MathWorks, Microsoft, Pavestone VC, Premji Invest, Samsung R&amp;D Institute Bangalore (SRI-B), Silverneedle Ventures, Sutherland, and _VOIS (Vodafone Intelligent Solutions). During the initial 6 months, startups will engage in intensive boot camps and active mentoring sessions conducted by industry experts and investor mentors. They will gain access to cutting-edge technology stacks and GPU compute nodes, enabling them to accelerate their AI projects. The Telangana government collaborated as the state partner for the programme, offering startups the opportunity to work on impactful B2G (business-to-government) use cases. The Indian Generative AI landscape had more than 60 startups dedicated to offering solutions and services to their customers spread across various industry verticals. More than $590 million in funding has already flown into this space, with 2022 being the year with the heaviest funding inflow, according to Nasscom.

<ul><li>At the <keyword id="9150718" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="build-2020">Build 2020</keyword> developer conference, <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> unveiled <keyword id="9250000" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Project-Bonsai">Project Bonsai</keyword> and <keyword id="9249999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Project-Moab">Project Moab</keyword>, its latest products to help engineers develop autonomous industrial control systems.</li><li>With Project Bonsai, engineers can simulate millions of possible methods and implement an optimised process within weeks as opposed to months, without having a background in artificial intelligence (AI).</li><li>For starters in AI, Project Moab allows developers to learn how to teach machines, making it a building block for Project Bonsai.</li></ul>At its Build 2020 developer conference, Windows-maker Microsoft today announced Project Bonsai, a new artificial intelligence (AI) development platform for developing autonomous industrial control systems. This AI platform can be used to make factories more efficient. The use of stuff like robotic arms, forklifts, precision drills and more can be optimised. Microsoft says that Bonsai will be useful across manufacturing, process control, robotics, energy, smart buildings, consumer durable goods and other sectors. Not just that, users can either 3D print the robot or buy one when it goes on sale later this year, Microsoft <a href="https://blogs.microsoft.com/ai-for-business/build-bonsai-public-preview/">said</a> in a statement. There is also a simulation, developed by MathWorks, that developers can try out immediately. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="75831278" title="Microsoft has a new supercomputer — and it wants to use it make AI that can talk like humans do" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> Building autonomous systems without a background in AI The key promise from Project Bonsai is that it allows people without a background in AI to build autonomous systems. This would make it easier for subject matter experts to focus on their subject instead of learning how AI works. Project Bonsai is a result of Microsoft’s acquisition of Bonsai in 2018. Project Moab is a tool for developers to learn how to teach machines If you don’t know how it will fit into your factory or office, you can simulate the physical infrastructure. And if you don’t have a background in AI, there is Project Moab to learn how to. <div type="image" title="Project Moab" msid="75833478" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Project Moab&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Project Moab is a hardware kit that allows developers to learn how to teach machines to accomplish a certain task. Microsoft is offering it initially as a simulator in MathWorks. Developers will also be able to 3D print robots to learn how this works in different scenarios. Developers and engineers will then be able to use their learnings from Project Moab into building autonomous systems using Project Bonsai. Microsoft says Project Bonsai can make factories more efficient⁠— and you don’t need to know AI, even a mechanical engineer can do it

The Hyperloop would move people in cars sealed inside a tube of moving air at speeds up to 760 mph. The idea is to travel between San Francisco and Los Angeles at an average speed of 600 mph. The problem is the corners: A vehicle moving that fast around corners would subject passengers to G-forces in excess of 0.5g, worse than a race car accelerating to 60 mph in 6 seconds. <a href="http://www.laweekly.com/2014-01-02/news/hyperloop-ucla-ideas-campus/">Above 0.5g, humans start to get sick and throw up</a> on each other.

The intended route for the Hyperloop would follow the I-580 freeway, sitting on concrete pillars above it for most of the way. Matt Brauer published some fascinating calculations that suggest there are <a href="http://blogs.mathworks.com/seth/2013/11/22/hyperloop-not-so-fast/">too many sharp turns on that route to accommodate the Hyperloop</a>'s proposed speed:
From the perspective of geographic constraints and rider comfort, the 760 mph peak speed is not an issue. It's the 300 mph section through the suburbs of San Francisco that requires closer consideration.
In order to limit lateral accelerations experienced by the passengers to 0.5g, there needs to be "minor deviations when the highway makes a sharp turn".
As you can see from the above map he created, those "minor deviations" cut right through some dense neighborhoods.
That's not to say the Hyperloop shouldn't be built. But it would mean a lot of angry homeowners and a bunch of litigation before the first shovel hits the dirt.
