In 1952, a highly toxic air-pollution event affected London causing major disruption by reducing visibility and even penetrating indoor areas. In the cold weather of London, anticyclone and windless conditions caused airborne pollutants created by the use of coal to accumulate and form a thick layer of smog over the city.<br /><br />A report later suggested that more than 6,000 people died in the following months as a result of the event. However, the pollution also brought with it various changes in practices and regulations, including the Clean Air Act 1956 as a boon for the nation.<br /><br /><strong>The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill</strong><br /><div type="image" title="deep water" msid="75601872" hostid="261"></div><br />The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill is considered to be the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. In April 2010, a Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and sank in the sea. <br /><br />Eleven of the 126 crew members died, while 17 others were injured. Over the course of 87 days, the rig's damaged wellhead spewed between 134 million and 206 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.<br /><br />The Death Of Aral Sea<br /><div type="image" title="The Death Of Aral Sea" msid="75601885" hostid="261"></div><br />The Death Of Aral Sea is considered to be one of the planet’s worst ecological disasters. In 1960, the sea was the fourth largest in the world. But the former-USSR decided to reroute the two rivers which fed into the lake.<br /><br />The country constructed massive irrigation channels to mastermind the operation. The plan was to feed the rivers back into the lake, but by making it pass through the deserted region, where the crops were to be planted. The USSR then wanted to become the biggest exporter of cotton.<br /><br />As a result of human intervention, the lake began to evaporate and in 2014 NASA images revealed that the Aral Sea has completely dried up.<br /><br /><h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;">The Chernobyl Disaster</h3><br /><div type="image" title="disaster" msid="75601902" hostid="261"></div><br />In April 1986, the technicians at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine decided to run a safety test on a reactor, to assess its functionality during a potential power outage. <br /><br />The test went wrong, and the reactor exploded. However, independent studies estimate that at least 8,000 died within the span of two weeks and eventually 8,000 more were reported dead due to the gas-related diseases. <br /><br />The government and private hospitals in Visakhapatnam are admitting hundreds of patients who were exposed to the gas. They have symptoms like breathlessness, headaches and frequent vomiting. <br /><br />Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu has demanded that a probe be conducted to determine who is accountable. An FIR has been filed against LG Chemicals, the parent company of LG Polymers, to investigate the issue. "The plant was strictly following all protocols. Investigation underway. As the Vizag gas leak crisis unravels, one can’t help but remember the Bhopal Gas Tragedy which left thousands dead

Bhopal, Jun 22 () Nearly 75 per cent of the patients who have died due to complications from COVID-19 in the capital city till June 11 were the victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, NGOs working for their welfare said on Monday. <p>Most of these gas victims had fragile immunity, they said. </p><p>"We have written a letter to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan drawing the governments attention towards this disturbing trend, Bhopal Group for Information and Action (BGIA) convener Rachna Dhingra told . </p><p>BGIA and three other NGOs, working for survivors of the worlds worst industrial disaster, have carried out an analysis that claims that 48 of the 60 patients, who died due to coronavirus till June 11 in the state capital, were also gas victims. </p><p>These 48 fatalities included three persons who were born to parents exposed to the toxic gas leak 35 years ago, the NGOs's analysis said. </p><p>These mortalities show survivors and their children were suffering even 35 years after the toxic methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas spewed out from the Union Carbide plant here, said Dhingra. </p><p>The analysis has revealed that 81 per cent gas victims who died due to COVID-19 had comorbidities (pre-existing health conditions), she said. </p><p>"Of course, their exposure to the toxic gas has left them in a state of permanent disability," she contended. </p><p>We want the state government to hold talks with us and gas tragedy survivors to find a way to help them," Dhingra added. </p><p>The four groups (NGOs) working for the survivors have come out with the right analysis," said Purnendu Shukla, a member of the Supreme Courts Monitoring Committee for Gas Victims. </p><p>The government should take the analysis seriously. The state government does not even have data of gas victims which is very disturbing," he added. </p><p>The Indian Council of Medical Research-run Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC), the dedicated superspeciality hospital meant for the survivors, was not taking proper care of the victims, he added. </p><p>We are going to inform the court about these things," Shukla said. </p><p>The other three NGOs involved in the exercise were Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmchari Sangh, Bhopal Gas Peedith Mahila, Purush Sangharsh Morcha and Children Against Dow-Carbide. </p><p>A state government official they were aware of the analysis. </p><p>Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Director Basant Kurre said they were aware of the analysis. </p><p>Twenty deceased were gas victims. <ul><li>At least 11 dead and over 300 have been rushed to hospitals after <keyword id="9179489" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="lg-polymer">LG Polymer</keyword>'s chemical plant in Andhra Pradesh's <keyword id="60510" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Visakhapatnam">Visakhapatnam</keyword> reported a gas leak, according to District Medical and Health Officer Tirumala Rao.</li><li>A second gas leak was reported later in the night, which the Home Ministry claried was required to being the container under control.</li><li>Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy has announced compensation of ₹1 crore to the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh to those who have been hospitalised.</li><li>The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) estimates that at least a thousand people have been affected by the gas leak.</li><li>So far, the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) has managed to evaculate 200 to 250 families from the Vizag area.</li><li>The surrounding area of around five kilometres has been affected by the Styrene gas leak with many reporting symptoms like itchy eyes, rashes on their skin, and vomiting.</li></ul>Major gas leak in Visakhapatnam is adding to the crisis in India with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. At least 11 people have been reported dead and at least 300 are admitted in the hospital, according to District Medical and Health Officer Tirumala Rao.<br /><br />Another 1,500 people have been evacuated from neighboring areas, added Assistant Commissioner of Police Swarupa Rani.<br /><br />A second gas leak was reported late last night (May 7), which the Home Ministry clarified was required to bring the container under control.<br /><br />The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) estimates that at least a thousand people expanding across five villages have been affected by the Styrene gas leak from LG Polymers' chemical plant in Vizag.<br /><br />    <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="75598617" title="‘This was not the first but this was the worst’ ⁠— says a Vizag gas leak survivor" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div><br />To counter the effects of the gas leak, around 500 kilograms of para-tertiary butyl catechol (PTBC) — a neutralising agent, which is only manufactured in Gujarat's Vapi— will be airlifted from Daman by the Andhra Pradesh government. <br /><br />All expenses related to the gas leak will be bourne by the Andhra Pradesh government. Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy announced compensation of ₹1 crore to the families of the deceased. Anyone who received primary care treatment due to the gas leak will be accorded ₹25,000. Those admitted to a hospital for more than two days will be given ₹1 lakh and those on ventilator support will get ₹10 lakh in compensation.<br /><br />The 15,000 people who live in the immediate neighborhood of the chemical planet will be given ₹10,000 each in addition to ₹25,000 for each livestock animal who died during the mishap.<br /><br />So far, the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) has managed to evaculate 200 to 250 families from the area. The local authorities and navy personnel were called into action to help manage the unfolding crisis. Gopalapatman circle inspector told TOI that they found nearly 50 people lying unconscious on the roads.<br /><br />"The gas leak situation is now under control and we are exploring all ways to provide speedy treatment for those who suffer from inhaling the leaked gas. Regardless of what you call it, the gas is a derivative of benzene and generally a colorless and oily liquid.<br /><br />    <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="75598829" title="Vizag gas leak: Styrene used in making household plastics and condoms — too much of it can cause cancer or coma" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div><br />The most common symptoms of the gas are skin irritation, itchy eyes, chest congestion, vomiting — and in the worst of cases — unconsciousness and death.<br /><br />Andhra Pradesh Industries Minister M G Reddy said the gas had been neutralised to harmless liquid form. <br /><br />"The treatment is supportive only. Some will need to be put on a ventilator. For acute lung injury, steroids may be given," AIIMS director, Doctor Randeep Guleria, told the press.<br /><br /><strong>Who is responsible for the gas leak?</strong><br />Reddy also told ANI that the South Korea-based LG Polymers has be held responsible for the situation and criminal action may be taken against them. An FIR has been filed against the company to investigate the issue.<br /><br />According to Andhra Pradesh DGP Damodar Goutam, the gas leak looks like  it was an accident so far. "The plant was strictly following all protocols. Investigation underway. Forensic teams are also being sent to the spot," he told ANI.<br /><br />“An FIR has been registered,” added the Police Commissioner of Visakhapatnam City. In addition, the National Human Rights Commision has issued a notice to the Andhra Pradesh and Central government.<br /><br />"The right to life of the victims has been grossly violated. At a time when human lives across the country are at stake due to the spread of coronavirus and everyone is forced to stay indoors, the gruesome tragedy has come as a bolt from the blue for the people," the National Human Rights Commission said in a statement<br /><br />LG Chemicals is also looking into the incident, and according to the company, operations are the factory were already suspended in view of the lockdown. But they were in the process of reopening again and resuming work, according to the NDRF chief.<br /><br /><strong>This is not India's first gas leak</strong><br />This isn't the first gas leak to wreak havoc on the country. In 1984, the Bhopal gas tragedy left 500,000 people exposed to methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas. The immediate death toll at time was reported to be 2,259. <p>The European Space Agency's Philae space probe just revealed that its target comet is covered in organic compounds - the building blocks of life - and the data could have a profound impact on origin-of-life research.</p><p>We already knew comets had organic compounds, but this is the first time we've been able to study them up close. Organics are a large class of molecules with one very important element: carbon. Scientists think it's very possible that carbon-carrying comets that smashed into Earth long ago and brought those very ingredients needed for life to arise.</p><p>Philae returned this image of the comet's surface. Scientists think the dark patches are made up of organics:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table Full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Philae has two different instruments designed to hunt for organic compounds. One of those instruments found 16 different types of organics on the comet, four of which (methyl isocyanate, acetone, propionaldehyde, and acetamide) have never been spotted on a comet before. The other Philae instrument also detected several organics along with water and carbon dioxide. The details were published July 30 in the journal <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/content/349/6247/aab0673">Science</a>.<p>Studying this comet is like looking back in time - it is made of the same organic material that comets may have brought to Earth billions of years ago. They're a record of what the solar system was like when it first began to form. If they landed in the right environment, those organics could have given rise to life, and many astronomers think that's one possible way life began on Earth.</p><p>It's possible that this batch of data could mark the end of the mission since Philae <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/first-image-from-the-philae-lander-descending-toward-a-comet-2014-11">didn't exactly stick the landing</a> when it descended on the comet. It bounced around on the surface and then landed in the shade where its solar batteries couldn't recharge. It beamed back about two days worth of data, but then went into hibernation mode. Since then communication between Philae and mission control on Earth has been spotty at best.
