Pixy is a mini drone from Snap that can follow you to record your videos

With a growing indigenous base of manufacturers, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s <keyword id="2757731" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="drone-industry" source="Orion">drone industry</keyword> may play an instrumental role in public services such as agriculture, defence, healthcare and infrastructure maintenance in the future, say experts while also highlighting some concerns around the safety and privacy of these unmanned aerial vehicles. Drones are mini pilotless aircraft operated by remote control and can be accessed through simple devices like a smartphone app. These unmanned vehicles require far less effort, time and energy, and can reach far and difficult terrains while being controlled by a single person remotely. Popularity and adoption of drone technology is catching up across regions and sectors and India is no exception to it. Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said last month that India will need approximately one lakh drone pilots in the coming years. In order to showcase the potential of the indigenous drone industry, India recently organised its biggest drone festival in the national capital. Bharat Drone Mahotsav, a two-day event held on May 27 and 28 in the capital saw over 1,600 delegates, including government officials, foreign diplomats, PSUs, private companies and drone startups etc. as participants. The companies exhibited unmanned vehicles ready for fields such as defence, agriculture, survey mapping while also showcasing futuristic cutting edge projects that will entail the drones taking bigger roles such as carrying patients in emergencies to delivering goods and essentials at a mass level. New-Delhi based drone maker Theta Enerlytics along with Vega Aviation Products showcased their endurance &amp; hard body drones at the festival. "These drones can be used for various purposes like agriculture, forest management services, town and city planning services, revenue and planning departments, police services, smart cities within the public sector and industries, power plants, mining companies, construction companies to name a few," said <keyword id="14180187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karan-Dhaul" source="Orion">Karan Dhaul</keyword>, Chairman and co-founder, Theta Enerlytics. "Our drones are made with complete composite materials which enable a higher-flying time than any other drones in their class. Our Theta Falcon can fly up to 150 minutes in a single flight and can carry up to 1kilogramme of sensors and payloads," Dhaul told PTI. He noted that 'Theta Falcon' is ideal for mapping applications, surveillance and border security. The drone takes off vertically like a helicopter and then transitions into horizontal flight like an airplane. Another drone showcased at the festival, 'Hexacopter Theta Lotus', can carry a payload of up to 10 kg in ideal conditions and can be also used for stringing guidewires for transmission lines, ropeway bridges and cable cars. "The Lotus can fly up to 70 minutes on a single charge," said Dhaul. Many drones displayed at the festival have a specific and strong use case and will do well due to the burgeoning demand in the country, said Suhas <keyword id="2921292" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chandak" source="Orion">Chandak</keyword>, owner of Karnataka-based Vega Aviation Products. "In India drone companies are already providing services worth 100 crores, and are poised to increase tenfold," Chandak told PTI. Drone technology expert Dharmendra Singh concurred, saying a huge market and demand for drones is coming very fast in the country. "Now, a lot of private players are coming in this area which will certainly reduce the cost of the drones as well as the services of the drones for different applications," Singh, professor at Department of Electronics &amp; Communication Engineering, <keyword id="55119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IIT) Roorkee told PTI. "So, it might be possible that in near future India may have very cost-effective services in various places like agriculture, delivery system, project monitoring, health sector etc," he added. As India aims to become a global hub for drone technology by 2030, Singh said highly stable and precise drones with good coverage capability may play an instrumental role in public services. The professor noted that India has enough infrastructure, good supply chain and excellent technical capacity for deploying drones, however, some concerns remain. "Privacy, secret monitoring or spying and collisions of the drones are some of the concerns that can hinder their large-scale implementation," he added. Chandak said the government is well aware of these issues and the zoning of the country into green, orange and red zones has addressed most fears and concerns, especially those around privacy. "However, as an industry we must ensure failsafe against equipment failure or human error as a single accident can change the fate of any operator," said Chandak. "As a deterrent to rogue drones, it would be helpful if the government makes easier the indigenous manufacture and deployment of anti drone systems and jammers to help protect infrastructure against antisocial elements," he added. A lesser known startup – <a href="https://mttr.net/">Matternet</a> has come up with Matternet which is designed for navigation by mobile-app and has self-flying capabilities. Matternet’s technology is designed around a different goal compared to Amazon’s or Google’s. While the e-commerce companies want drones to deliver products, Matternet’s vision for drone delivery involves unmanned drones making deliveries for regular, fixed routes for emergency cases like urgent delivery of medical supplies and medicines. They also plan to sell these drones to companies for $5000 each. While things get cleared up in the sky, a Chinese e-commerce giant JD announced last week that it is taking things a little more realistically with unmanned drones that look like mini vans. According to JD, the drones are around a meter in length and are capable of selecting their own routes; drive themselves fitted with smart obstacle avoidance technology. When the drone arrives near the customer, they will be notified via the JD mobile app where they can come out near the device, put in a key to unlock the cargo area and pick up their package. So whether you envision robots coming to you via air or land, you know your upcoming delivery toy is smarter than your delivery boy.

Mercedes seems to have got it right, with the C300D. I had an opportunity to spend an entire day with the car, where I took it around the streets of New Delhi, and cruised with it on the national highway. Having spent some solid hours behind the wheel, in the most practical environments, I can say it is the most practical luxury Sedan I have driven so far. Giving me hope that the segment is not out of tricks yet. C-class has always been dubbed the mini S-class and rightfully so. We get a familiar design language albeit shrunk down to match a more sportier and coupe look. Although, when I say shrunk down in no means does it reflect on how aesthetic the car looks. Be it the running LED-lights upfront, especially with the AMG kit looks mean and sporty. Mercedes' intention of providing a good mix of luxury and sport is delivered successfully. The AMG grill not only looks intimidating but comes with a star like pattern on the slats. There is also an over-bite that is a bit protruding, but adds to the appeal. The bonnet on the sedan is fairly long and dipping downwards which adds to the sportier appeal. The AMG profile carries throughout the car with a more prominent side skirt and AMG tyres. On the back we have the slimline tail lights which are inspired from the S-class. The boot space while looking compact is fairly spacious with a capacity of 455 liters. The tech on the car starts to make its presence felt from the surface itself. Be it the auto folding ORVMs, or the auto shut-off headlights. Of Course the car comes with a keyless entry and I wouldn’t have expected anything less. While the dimensions of a car is of a full size sedan at 2033mmx1466mm, it is easy to flicker around. I drove the car in the narrow lanes across Delhi. To drive it across west Delhi’s vendor laden roads to broad roads around CP the car is fun to drive. Tech Inside - Mini S-Class all around! The C300D manages to deliver an S-class like experience from the inside as well. You realize it quick when you look at the two massive displays inside. Having the famous Mercedes thunk in the middle, the cockpit is beautiful. The middle display gives you complete access to the car and it’s various features. Before I go on to explain my favorites from it, I have to mention that the display is very responsive. My favorite functions touch upon three aspects of the car - performance, aesthetics and comfort. Performance - The center screen allows you to set the performance mode on the car with ease. Having 3 modes - Sports, Economy, Comfort. Its easy to select the one you prefer and go about your day. Of Course the power differs in all three modes, which I will cover in the drive section. Aesthetics - <div type="image" title="The cockpit is inspired by S-Class" msid="101211487" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The cockpit is inspired by S-Class&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The C300D has a very comprehensive set-up of LEDs spread across the interior. The entire set-up is customisable, which makes it fun to use. I changed the color of the interior multiple times, and it looked refreshing each time. Comfort - You also have quality of life features on your fingertips here. From setting up the climate temperature to setting up maps. It’s convenient and comfort comes first here. The detail Mercedes has put into the 11.9-inch display is truly commendable. Moving away from the tech, the C-class is also very comfortable, with ventilated seats. The cabin is spacious, and you don’t have to worry about figuring out your driving position at all. I am 6 feet tall, and I was able to find my groove within the first 5 minutes. The memory seats also come in handy which let you set-up your default profile easily. For a family of four the cabin has ample space. I had set up the front seats according to my height and yet the passengers could sit comfortably. Storage options are also plenty in the C300D. You get storage compartments upfront under the arm rest, along with the dashboard and spacious door pockets as well. The cabin noise is also minimal. For entertainment, the Burmester audio system comes in handy. The 9 speaker set-up is loud and delivers crystal clear audio. I accessed Spotify from the car and the quality was top notch. Driving Now we come to the part which defines my experience with the C300D. Driving this sedan is a fulfilling experience, from the moment you turn the engine on, the car roars to life. The 1993CC engine runs with a 9 speed automatic transmission, which can be changed to manual mode as well. Yes, it does come with paddle shifters for a manual drive. The car produces 500Nm of torque from the diesel engine and 200Nm from the battery pack, which gives a controlled launch. But once it picks up there is no turning back. The gear box is slick and transitions back and forth without any struggle. The car has no shortage of power, be it short sprints or long marathons on the highway, it delivers optimally. To give you some numbers the car did 0-100kph in 5 seconds, which is very fast. My favorite driving mode in the car is sports, simply because it knows how to channel the power of the engine. What's particularly enjoyable about Sport mode is its ability to maintain gears for extended periods, and it even automatically downshifts when braking forcefully.The diesel engine remains quiet and sophisticated, there is a noticeable grumble when sitting idle, and drones a bit when pushed to its maximum RPM. While this is to be anticipated, opting for a six-cylinder engine would undeniably provide a smoother and more refined experience, particularly one of Mercedes-Benz's renowned silky straight-six engines. Before closing I have to touch upon the hybrid aspect. Regarding the hybrid aspect, the 48V motor primarily serves as a starter boost in this case, contributing to improved fuel efficiency. During my test drive, we achieved an average of 17 kilometers per liter (17 kmpl) in terms of mileage. Verdict Mercedes C300D is a perfect mix of luxury and sports. Over the years Mercedes has perfected the execution of technology in their cars and the C300D is another example in the line-up. The only suggestion I want to make here is to go for the AMG kit, if you plan on buying this car. It adds to the appeal, and gives it more character.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">AstranisAstranis Founders John Gedmark and Ryan McLinko</div></div></div><ul><li>Astranis is a satellite company based in the San Francisco Bay Area, building geostationary satellites that it says are smaller, cheaper, and faster to make than those of its competitors. </li><li>The company just raised $13.5 million in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz; Martin Casado, an Andreessen Horowitz general partner, will join its board. </li><li>Astranis plans to sell its satellites to telecommunications companies, helping them connect remote parts of the world on the cheap. </li><li>Astranis' CEO argues his company's satellites are a more practical solution for connecting the world than what Google and Facebook have tried to do.</li></ul> In early January, a startup called Astranis tested MicroGEO, its first-ever orbital internet connectivity satellite, by beaming up a couple of high-definition videos.The first video was a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUIxemmfc7o">recording of the rocket launch that took MicroGEO into orbit</a>. The second was a recording of tennis star Roger Federer's winning match in the 2018 Australian Open. "So now Roger Federer has been to space," joked Astranis CEO John Gedmark.The videos went up to MicroGEO, had their signals reprocessed, and then were beamed back down to an antenna on Earth - a fairly standard procedure for an internet connectivity satellite. On Thursday, it announced it's raised $13.5 million in a Series A round led by Andreessen Horowitz - the legendary Silicon Valley venture-capital firm that was an early investor in Facebook, Twitter, and Airbnb. As part of the investment, Martin Casado, a general partner at the firm, will join Astranis' board.The company, which hopes to find a big market for MicroGEO among telecommunications companies, plans to use its new funds to build a satellite assembly line and ramp up production. Astranis hopes the satellites will allow its customers to make broadband internet service available to the billions of people around the world - in countries like India and China, and even in rural parts of the United States - who aren't currently connected."We believe there's a better way, there's a better approach. We can get smaller and less expensive," said Gedmark, who holds a master's degree in aerospace engineering from Stanford. <h2>Not fast enough</h2>The goal of getting the whole world online is not a new one. For the last several years, Google, Facebook, and other Silicon Valley giants have tried to tackle the connectivity problem with a range of so-called moonshot projects - everything from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-google-parent-turns-on-internet-balloons-in-puerto-rico-2017-10">suspending wireless access points from balloons</a>, to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebooks-giant-solar-drones-first-public-showing-will-be-in-london-2017-11">self-piloting drones that shoot internet-connectivity lasers back to Earth</a>. Those projects could eventually pay off, but Gedmark is impatient for results."Google and Facebook are spending enormous sums of money to solve it, and we're just not making progress," he said.Astranis could step into the gap and speed up the process, Gedmark said. Its MicroGEO satellites use tried-and-true antenna technology, so there's little risk that they won't work.And the satellites have a big advantage by being relatively small. Where most internet-delivery satellites are the size of a double-decker bus, the Astranis satellite is about the size of a mini-fridge.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">AstranisAstranis is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. It has about 20 employees, but it's planning on hiring more.</div></div></div>Rival satellites cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars to produce. But because of their smaller size, each MicroGEO satellite should cost in the tens of millions of dollars.They're "orders of magnitude cheaper," said Andreessen Horowitz's Casado.Another key part of Astranis' strategy comes from its software.In the past, the antennae for internet connectivity satellites had to be custom-built and pre-tuned, Gedmark said. That added both time and cost to the process of building satellites.Astranis is going a different route in the MicroGEO, using a so-called software-defined antenna for its satellite. That technology will allow it to build a whole bunch of identical satellites that use the exact same hardware for their antennae. The company will be able to adjust the antennae to the specific frequencies of each of its telecommunications provider partners after the fact via software.That should allow Astranis to achieve economies of scale with MicroGEO beyond what most satellite manufacturers can achieve today, Gedmark said.What's more, the company's use of a software-defined antenna system dovetails nicely with the background of Casado, its new board member. In his previous career, he was the chief technology officer of Nicira, a startup that all but invented the notion of software-defined networking before it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-buys-nicira-for-126-billion-2012-7">was acquired by VMware for $1.26 billion</a>.Indeed, Astranis' reliance on software is "right in our wheelhouse" at Andreessen Horowitz, Casado said.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Astranis</div></div></div>With its advantages in terms of cost of production and economies of scale, Astranis is poised to make a dent in the massive satellite industry, Gedmark said. The satellite business will be a $260.5 billion market in 2017 with more growth ahead, Tom Stroup, president of the Satellite Industry Association, <a href="https://www.sia.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/NSC18-Feb-21st.pdf">told the National Space Council</a> earlier this week."It's as large a market as I've ever faced in my life," Casado said.<h2>'We just can't put stuff in the sky fast enough'</h2>The sheer size of that market is spurring Astranis to ramp up production as quickly as possible, Gedmark said. There's a huge push to get people online, but even with the growing interest in using satellites to connect them, the infrastructure just isn't there. "We just can't put stuff in the sky fast enough," he said. You shouldn't expect to get internet access directly from one of Astranis' satellites. Instead, the company plans to use them to offer so-called back-haul service, helping wireless telecommunications providers connect their cell towers to the wider network. For those companies, the pricey part of expanding their networks is laying down the cable lines they typically use to connect their towers.Astranis' satellites will operate in a geostationary orbit, meaning they'll sit in the sky at a point where they move at the exact same speed as the Earth. This means that if you somehow managed to launch an Astranis satellite from the tip of the Empire State Building, it would always appear to be hovering right above that point.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">VMwareAndreessen Horowitz's Martin Casado, who is joining Astranis' board.</div></div></div>Because they will be fixed in place, the satellites will be able to act as a virtual wire connecting different towers. And using them should be less expensive than laying down costly fiber optic cable.The effort to get internet access to underserved communities resonates with Casado. He's already involved in several nonprofit efforts to connect rural American communities. With the rise of Astranis and other efforts - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-spacecraft-pictures-elon-musk-2018-2\">such as that from Elon Musk's company, SpaceX</a> - he's hopeful that big things are on the horizon for the space industry and the future of connectivity.
