In the first half of June 2014, news accounts described an extreme heatwave in India, as well as the late and somewhat weak arrival of the seasonal monsoon. Air temperatures in New Delhi climbed as high as 48° Celsius (118° Fahrenheit) and stayed above 43°C (110°F) for seven days. Satellite data offer some insights on what was happening on the ground.
The maps above show <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/GlobalMaps/view.php?d1=MOD_LSTAD_M&amp;eocn=home&amp;eoci=globalmaps">land surface temperature (LST) anomalies</a> for southern Asia from June 2-9 and June 10-17, 2014. LST anomalies are not absolute temperatures; instead, they show how much the land surface was heated above or below the average. The darkest reds show areas where the ground was as much as 12°C (22°F) above the norm from 2001-2010; blues show areas that were below normal; and grays depicts areas with incomplete data (usually due to excessive cloud cover).

The top map depicts extreme heating northwestern India, Tibet, and southern China in the first week of June; the temperature highs were less extreme in the June 10-17 period. Yet neither map fully captures the heatwave that occurred in northern and central India because it overlapped two different weeks of data. Each map shows an average of eight days, so the extreme temperatures of individual days gets smoothed out by the average to cooler temperatures on other days in the period. The extremes around New Delhi also might not show up as brightly in this map because temperatures were about 5°C above the norm while other areas went as much as 12°C above.
But the map does reveal something else: the arrival of the monsoon. Note how much of central and western India is cooler in the second week; there are also several gray areas where cloudiness masked out measurements of the ground. Rainfall, cloud cover, and moist breezes from the Arabian Sea likely explain the change in land surface temperatures. India's meteorological agency noted that the monsoon has arrived, but rainfall in the June to September period is expected to be weaker than normal.
Observed by satellites uniformly around the world, land surface temperatures are a measure of the amount of infrared energy (thermal radiance) emitted by Earth's surface as it is heated by daylight and cooled in the dark of night. LSTs are sometimes referred to as land "skin" temperatures, and indeed they are a reflection of how hot a surface would feel to the touch. NASA Maps Show Asia's Insane June Heat Wave 

<aside></aside>The Capital of <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> has been plagued with numerous issues — <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/delhis-summer-of-discontent-anger-killings-over-water/articleshow/64778458.cms">water scarcity</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indiainsider">electricity shortage</a>, possible <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/railways/delhi-metro-services-may-come-to-halt-from-saturday/articleshow/64774238.cms">metro strike</a> — but the most dire of them is its losing battle with pollution. Now, after almost an entire year, the pre-monsoon showers not only brought citizens of <keyword id="66" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> much-needed respite from the unbearable heat, but it also brought with it clean air. The <keyword id="2071721" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Quality-Index">Air Quality Index</keyword> (AQI) was recorded at 83 today, which is deemed ‘satisfactory’ and things are slated to get better when the actual monsoons arrive on Friday, hopefully. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the last time the air quality was this clean was in August 2017. As far as levels go, an AQI between 0-50 is considered ‘Good’, 51-100 ‘Satisfactory, 101-200 ‘Moderate’, 201-300 ‘Poor’, 301-400 ‘Very Poor’, and 401-500 ‘Severe’. A Central Pollution Control Board official <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/delhi/pre-monsoon-showers-bring-air-quality-to-satisfactory-level-first-time-in-a-year-5238521/">told</a> the Press Trust of India that the winds accompanying the rains managed to clean up the dusty air and he also anticipates that the level may just reach the ‘good’ category. And while Delhi’s collective sigh of relief is perhaps justified, the city in all probability will pivot back to ‘severe’ or even the ‘severe plus’ categories, which has sadly become all too common. Delhi’s pollution levels have been so abysmal this past year that it earned the not-so-coveted spot of being the <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/delhi-worlds-most-polluted-megacity-as-beijing-cleans-up-report-1846194">world’s most polluted megacity</a>, according to the World Health Organisation. In fact, there were a number of days last year when the AQI was a staggering <a href="https://www.outlookindia.com/website/story/delhi-turns-into-a-gas-chamber-as-air-quality-touches-999-the-worst-so-far/304006">999</a>, which is the highest the monitoring machine can read.

New Delhi, Jan 21 () The government is considering lifting ban on exports of onion as fresh arrival of the commodity has started softening its prices in the domestic market, an official said.
 "Arrival of fresh onion will further soften the prices here so there is a need to lift the export ban," the official said.
 Onion prices have come down to around Rs 60-70 per kg depending upon quality and locality from the peak of Rs 160 per kg last month.
Fresh onion is available from January to May.
In September 2019, the government banned the export of onion to increase availability of the commodity in the domestic market and contain rising prices. The government had also imposed stock limits on traders.
Retail onion prices had skyrocketed in Delhi and other parts of the country due to supply disruption from flood-affected growing states like Maharashtra.
Onion production is estimated to have declined by around 25 per cent in the Kharif and late Kharif seasons of 2019-20 crop year compared to the previous year due to late monsoon and then excess rains in the major producing states. RR MR

Govt considering lifting ban on onion exports

New Delhi, June 15 (IANSlife) While Maharashtra continues to grapple with COVID-19, monsoon season has entered the state as well. Mumbai dewellers are now gearing up to tackle a range of other monsoon related infectious diseases, while taking precautionary measures against coronavirus. While most of us are to remain indoors, it is imperative that we take necessary precautions to bolster our health during the season. When it comes to the respiratory system, our body reacts as per the surroundings we dwell in. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the air quality within the home and in enclosed spaces. Bacteria that are present in our homes become the invisible enemy; it is important to understand and subsequently control common pollutants that are present indoors. This will help reduce the risk and prevent you from being susceptible to a host of health concerns during the monsoons. Common monsoon factors to consider: With the rise in humidity, one may experience musty or damp odour; furnishings may feel damp as well with an arrival of overgrowth of fungus and mould. Monsoons may also increase indoor bugs and insects Allowing surfaces to become cooler than the surrounding leads to condensation and dampness; dampness due to the monsoon may initiate chemical or biological degradation of furniture and materials. This could lead to indoor air pollution. Dampness therefore is a strong indicator of risk of Asthma and respiratory symptoms like coughing and wheezing. Health effects from indoor air pollutants may be experienced soon after exposure or, even later. The immediate effects due to adverse indoor air quality may show up shortly after a single exposure or repeated exposures to a pollutant. These may include: Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; Headaches or dizziness; and Fatigue, says Dr Prashant Chhajed, HOD-Respiratory Medicine, Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi and Fortis Hospital, Mulund Immediate effects as the above are generally short-term and can be treated. The treatment includes simply removing the affected person's contact or exposure from the pollution source. It is important to identify the source to ensure complete elimination of contact. It is often noted that after immediate exposure to indoor air pollutants, symptoms pertaining to diseases like Asthma may be displayed. If it is an existing condition, this could even aggravate or worsen. Follow these tips to prevent or reduce exposure to indoor pollutants during the monsoons to stay healthy and fit. Maintain adequate ventilation at home During the day, if there is sufficient sunlight, keep the windows open so that pollutants can escape and cleaner air may set in The house should be checked for water leaks and dampness to prevent the growth of any microorganisms Cleaning of air conditioning filters should also be undertaken regularly Patients with Asthma need to take special care during the monsoon and should also ensure that fungus does not grow on wooden furniture, and on other articles such as shoes and leather bags. Managing respiratory health during rains

New Delhi, Dec 19 () State-owned trading firm MMTC, which is importing onions on behalf of the government, has contracted an additional 12,500 tonnes of edible bulb from Turkey to boost domestic availability and control prices.
 Onion prices are ruling at an average Rs 100 per kg in major cities, but rates are as high as Rs 160 per kg in some parts of the country. In the national capital, prices have touched Rs 118 per kg.
 "With this additional 12,500 tonnes, the total contracted onions so far for imports have gone upto 42,500 tonnes," an official statement said.
 MMTC has been directed to enter into contracts for imports by the Price Stabilisation Fund Management Committee (PSFMC) of the Department of Consumer Affairs.
 The latest contract of onions will begin arriving in India from mid-January onwards.
 "A bulk of the contracted onions to the tune of approximately 12,000 tonnes will arrive in India before December 31, 2019 which will then be supplied to various States in line with their respective demand," the statement said.
 This is likely to immediately reduce the prices and improve overall availability, it added.
 Onion production is estimated to have declined by around 25 per cent in the Kharif and late Kharif seasons of 2019-20 crop year compared to the previous year due to late monsoon and then excess rains in the major producing states.

MMTC to import additional 12,500tn onion from Turkey

New Delhi, Dec 23 () The first batch of imported onion weighing 790 tonnes has reached India and some quantities are being distributed to Delhi and Andhra Pradesh at a landing cost of Rs 57-60/kg, a senior Consumer Affairs Ministry official said on Monday.
 An approximately 12,000-tonne of onion shipment is expected to arrive by end of December, he stated.
 State-run MMTC, which is importing the key kitchen staple on behalf of the government, has contracted 49,500 tonne of onion so far.
 Retail onion prices are ruling at an average Rs 100 per kg in major cities, but rates are as high as Rs 160 per kg in some parts of the country.
 "The two consignments comprising 290 tonne and 500 tonne each has already reached Mumbai. We are offering this onion at a landed cost of Rs 57-60/kg to state governments," the official told .
 Andhra Pradesh and Delhi governments have already placed their demands and have started lifting imported onions, he said.
 Onion has been imported from Turkey, Egypt and Afghanistan. More consignments are underway which should improve the domestic supplies, he added.
 Onion prices have shot up sharply due to estimated 25 per cent fall in kharif production of 2019-20 crop year (July-June) compared to the previous year because of late monsoon and eventual excess rains in the major producing states.
 Onion prices have failed to cool down despite several government measures in the last few weeks. The government has already banned export of onion, imposed stock limits on traders and is also supplying buffer stock at a cheaper rate.
 Traders and experts are of the view that onion prices will continue to remain firm till January when late kharif crop will start hitting the market.
 The country had last imported 1,987 tonnes of onion way back in 2015-16 when price has shot up significantly. LUX ANS

790 tonnes of imported onion reach India; some sent to AP, Delhi: Govt official

New Delhi, Nov 25 () Public sector trading firm MMTC, which has been tasked to import onion on behalf of the Centre to cool prices, has contracted to import 6,090 tonnes from Egypt, and the edible bulb will be supplied to states in a price range of Rs 52-60 per kg.
 Last week, the Union Cabinet decided to import 1.2 lakh tonnes of onions to improve the domestic supply and control prices, which touched Rs 100 per kg earlier this month. Retail prices are ruling at around Rs 70 per kg in the national capital.
 "MMTC has placed order for the first consignment of 6,090 tonnes of onions from Egypt which will be arriving at Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mumbai. The Onions are being offered to state governments for distribution at the rate of Rs 52-55 per kilogram ex-Mumbai and will also be made available at the rate of Rs 60 per kilogram ex-Delhi," an official statement said.
 States could directly take the imported stock from the location and also have the option of getting transportation facilitated through NAFED, if required.
 "The supply of imported onions will begin from early December onwards," the statement said.
 Consumer Affairs Secretary Avinash K Srivastava on Monday held video conference with state governments to analyse their demand. He has also written a letter to chief secretaries of all states on November 23 in this regard.
 While the Delhi government is yet to place any demand for onions, NAFED has informed that it will retail onions through its own outlets and those of Mother Dairy, Kendriya Bhandar and NCCF.
 "The total demand received so far from various state governments for the 1st week is 2,265 tonnes which includes demand from Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala and Sikkim and also includes the demand of NAFED for supplies in Delhi," the statement said.
 Other states have been requested to indicate their demand at the earliest.
 On November 19, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said production in kharif and late-kharif seasons of 2019-20 is estimated to fall 26 per cent to 5.2 million tonne, putting pressure on supply and prices.
 In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Paswan said onion is a seasonal crop with harvesting period of rabi (March to June), kharif (October to December) and late-kharif (January-March). During July to October, the supply in the market comes from stored onions from rabi season.
 "During 2019-20, there was a 3-4 weeks delay in sowing as well as decline in sown area of the kharif onion because of late arrival of monsoon. Further, untimely prolonged rains in the major growing states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh during the harvesting period caused damage to the standing crops in these regions," Paswan had said.
 As a result, the minister said the production of kharif crop was affected.
 The rains during the September-October period also hit transportation of crop from these producing regions to consuming centres, he had said.
 "This led to limited availability of kharif onions in the market and has put pressure on its prices," Paswan had said.

MMTC contracts to import 6,090 tonnes onion from Egypt; to be supplied to states at Rs 52-60/kg

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has attributed the significant <keyword id="20029550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rise" source="keywords">rise</keyword> in <keyword id="20233512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue-cases" source="keywords">dengue cases</keyword> in the city this year to an increase in the number of <keyword id="22375552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="testing-centres" source="keywords">testing centres</keyword>, which has grown from 36 to 900 compared to last year, according to an official report. As of July 6, Delhi recorded over 256 dengue cases, which is nearly double of the 136 cases recorded in the corresponding period in 2023 and the highest since 2020, according to the report's data. In previous years, the number of dengue cases stood at 153 in 2022, 38 in 2021, and 22 in 2020. The highest number of dengue cases were recorded in the Najafgarh Zone, the report said. No deaths due to the vector-borne disease have been reported so far this year. Last year, 19 deaths occurred due to dengue, the second-highest since 2020. "The rise in the number of cases this year is because more testing centres have started collecting samples and reporting the dengue cases to the civic body. Until last year, there were about 36 testing centres. Now, this number has increased to 900 because of which the numbers appear to be inflated," a senior civic body official said. The peak season for dengue is yet to arrive in Delhi and the situation will call for urgent attention when the monsoon advances, providing a suitable atmosphere for <keyword id="21283114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mosquito-breeding" source="keywords">mosquito breeding</keyword> to increase significantly, the official said. Usually, it takes about 10-15 days for a larva to become an adult mosquito that spreads dengue. The MCD is taking various measures to curb breeding at the source, another official said. According to the report, in areas under the jurisdiction of other agencies like New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), Delhi Cantt and Railways, around 10 dengue cases were reported as of July 6. The report also shows data on other vector-borne diseases. The number of malaria cases reported until the end of last week stood at 90, while chikungunya cases were logged at 22. The MCD conducted over 1.8 crore house visits to check for domestic mosquito breeding and found breeding in over 43,000 houses, the report said.
