<keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> on Monday reported its second <keyword id="7616951" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monkeypox" source="Orion">monkeypox</keyword> case. A 35-year-old Nigerian man, who was admitted to the LNJP hospital, has tested positive for the infection, a source told IANS. He is the second confirmed case of monkeypox in the city. The foreign national was admitted two days ago to the LNJP hospital which has been designated by the government as the nodal hospital for treatment of the infection. As per the source, the Nigerian man has no recent history of foreign travel. His samples were sent to the <keyword id="6375751" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="national-institute-of-virology" source="Orion">National Institute of Virology</keyword> (<keyword id="50971" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="niv" source="Orion">NIV</keyword>) in <keyword id="2094" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pune" source="Orion">Pune</keyword>, and the confirmation report reached the hospital on Monday evening. Apart from that, a suspected case of monkeypox has also been admitted to the hospital on Monday. Currently, the hospital has two suspected <keyword id="44392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cases" source="Orion">cases</keyword> of monkeypox. With two confirmed cases in the national capital, the nationwide tally of monkeypox infection has reached six while one person in Kerala has succumbed to the virus. Delhi records second monkeypox case, nationwide tally reaches 6

Samples collected from a man with suspected symptoms of <keyword id="7616951" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="monkeypox" source="Orion">Monkeypox</keyword> were sent to the <keyword id="6375751" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-institute-of-virology" source="Orion">National Institute of Virology</keyword> (<keyword id="50971" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="niv" source="Orion">NIV</keyword>) <keyword id="2094" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pune" source="Orion">Pune</keyword> on Monday. Five types of samples of the 40-year-old man currently in isolation at <keyword id="177659" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fever-hospital" source="Orion">Fever Hospital</keyword> in <keyword id="6354552" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hyderabad" source="Orion">Hyderabad</keyword> were collected and sent to the lab. The samples include swab from throat, blood, urine, from lesions on skin. According to Fever Hospital superintendent <keyword id="14548303" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dr-k-shankar" source="Orion">Dr K. Shankar</keyword>, the results are likely to be available by Tuesday evening He termed the condition of the man as stable. According to him, the patient is restless and has a running fever. "The lesions on his neck, hands and chest are like lesions from Monkeypox. It may also be chickenpox," Dr Shankar said. The samples were collected after the man was shifted from his home town Kamareddy to Hyderabad on Sunday evening. According to officials he arrived in Kamareddy from Kuwait on July 6. He developed fever on July 20 and later when there were rashes on the body, he approached a private hospital in the town. Suspecting it to be a case of Monkeypox, doctors referred him to Kamareddy District Hospital and from there he was sent in an ambulance to Hyderabad on Sunday. Director of Public Health Dr G. Srinivasa Rao said the man's six close contacts were also identified. Though they have no symptoms, the authorities kept them in isolation as a precautionary measure. The health department is also trying to trace those who came into contact with them during the last few days. The director of public health said that people need not panic over Monkeypox as it is not a fatal disease. He said health minister Harish Rao was monitoring the situation and giving them directions. "We are taking all necessary measures," he said. This is the first suspected case of Monkeypox in Telangana. Neighbouring Andhra Pradesh had reported the first suspected case on July 17. A two-year-old child, who had gone to Dubai with family, was found with skin rashes on return. However, the samples sent to NIV, Pune tested negative for Monkeypox. Telangana's health department is also requesting Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad to test the samples from the suspected Monkeypox case. The RT-PCR test would be conducted at the government hospital and if the result is positive, the samples will be sent to NIV, Pune for confirmation. However, the samples from the first suspected case were directly sent to NIV. Fever Hospital in Hyderabad recently set up two isolation wards for Monkeypox cases. One isolation ward each was opened for male and female patients. Superintendent of the hospital said they have arranged for 36 beds and the requisite staff, equipment and medicines. Fever Hospital, as the Sir Ronald Ross Institute for Tropical and Communicable Diseases is popularly known, has been declared a nodal centre for treatment of suspected Monkeypox cases. On Sunday, the first suspected case was admitted. The Fever Hospital had also handled the first few suspected cases of Covid-19 in March, 2020. Samples from Telangana's 1st suspected Monkeypox case sent to NIV

<keyword id="9485939" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="covaxin" source="Orion">Covaxin</keyword>, India's first indigenous vaccine for Covid-19, has been found to be 77.8 per cent effective, according to the safety and efficacy analysis data from Phase III clinical trials peer reviewed and published in reputed medical journal The Lancet. Hyderabad-based <keyword id="149108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharat-biotech" source="Orion">Bharat Biotech</keyword> said the Lancet peer-review confirms the efficacy analysis which demonstrates Covaxin to be effective against Covid-19. The vaccine maker Covaxin is the only Covid-19 vaccine to have demonstrated efficacy data from phase III clinical trials against the Delta variant at 65.2 per cent. A"The efficacy analysis demonstrates Covaxin to be 77.8 per cent effective against symptomatic Covid-19, through evaluation of 130 confirmed cases, with 24 observed in the vaccine group versus 106 in the placebo group," the company said. The efficacy analysis also demonstrates Covaxin to be 93.4 per cent effective against severe symptomatic Covid-19 "Safety analysis demonstrates adverse events reported were similar to placebo, with 12 per cent of subjects experiencing commonly known side effects and less than 0.5 per cent of subjects experiencing serious adverse events," it said The efficacy data also shows 63.6 per cent protection against asymptomatic Covid-19, 65.2 per cent protection against the SARS-CoV-2, B.1.617.2 Delta and 70.8 per cent protection against all variants of SARS-CoV-2 virus. Covaxin was developed under a partnership with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the <keyword id="6375751" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-institute-of-virology" source="Orion">National Institute of Virology</keyword>, with Bharat Biotech receiving the SARS-COV-2 strains through this collaboration. Bharat Biotech had established an ongoing collaboration with ViroVax since 2019, through the Indo-US Vaccine Action Program, to develop and evaluate IMDG (Alhydroxiquim-II), a novel TLR7/8 agonist molecule, which is formulated as part of the adjuvant in Covaxin. The Adjuvant Program of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has supported ViroVax since 2009. "The peer-review of Covaxin phase III clinical trial data in The Lancet, an authoritative voice in global medicine validates our commitment to data transparency and meeting the stringent peer-review standards of world leading medical journals," said Krishna Ella, CMD of Bharat Biotech. He said the data from their product development and clinical trials have been published in 10 peer-reviewed journals, making Covaxin one of the most highly published Covid-19 vaccines in the world. The phase 3 trial Efficacy and Safety Study involving 25,800 volunteers across 25 sites in India is India's largest ever clinical trial conducted for a Covid-19 vaccine. Bharat Biotech has partnered with Ocugen to obtain approvals for Covaxin in the US and Canada. With more than 150 million doses manufactured, supplied, and with an excellent safety and efficacy profile, Covaxin is a major contributor to the global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. The vaccine is currently being evaluated in controlled clinical trials in children 2-18 years of age, with results expected during Q4 2021. India's Covaxin 77.8% effective for COVID-19, says Lancet Report

<keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>'s first indigenous vaccine against COVID-19, <keyword id="9485939" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="covaxin">Covaxin</keyword>, is safe and generates immune response without any serious side effects, according to the interim results of the phase 2 trials published in The <keyword id="6361830" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="lancet">Lancet</keyword> Infectious Diseases journal. The authors of the study noted that the phase 2 results did not asses the efficacy of the vaccine codenamed BBV152. Developed by <keyword id="149108" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword> in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the <keyword id="6375751" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-institute-of-virology">National Institute of Virology</keyword> (NIV), Pune, the vaccine has been granted emergency use authorisation in clinical trial mode by the Indian government. Covaxin had initially raised concerns among experts over its emergency approval by India's drug regulator. The latest study comes a week after Bharat Biotech announced that the vaccine has shown 81 per cent efficacy in the third phase of clinical trials, the results of which are yet to be published. The phase 2 trial to evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of BBV152 vaccine was conducted in healthy adults and adolescents aged 12-65 years at nine hospitals across nine states in India. Two intramuscular doses of vaccine were administered on day 0 and day 28. The primary outcome was assessed in all participants who had received both doses of the vaccine. Safety was assessed in participants who received at least one dose of the vaccine. Between September 5 and 12, last year, 921 potential participants were screened, 380 of whom were enrolled. "We report interim findings of the phase 2 trial on the immunogenicity and safety of BBV152, with the first dose administered on day 0 and the second dose on day 28," the authors of the study said. In the phase 1 trial, published in the same journal last month, BBV152 induced high neutralising antibody responses that remained elevated in all participants three months after the second vaccination. In the phase 2 trial, BBV152 showed better reactogenicity and safety outcomes, and enhanced humoral and cell-mediated immune responses -- two main mechanisms within the adaptive immune system -- compared with the phase 1 trial. Adaptive immunity occurs after exposure to an antigen either from a pathogen or a vaccination. Reactogenicity refers to the property of a vaccine of being able to produce common, adverse reactions, especially excessive <keyword id="1441458" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="immunological">immunological</keyword> responses and associated signs and symptoms, including fever and sore arm at the injection site. Covaxin is an inactivated vaccine developed by chemically treating novel coronavirus samples to make them incapable of reproduction. This process leaves the viral proteins, including the spike protein of the coronavirus, which it uses to enter the human cells, intact. Given as two doses, three weeks apart, the viral proteins in the vaccine activate the immune system and prepare people for future infections with the actual infectious virus. "The results reported in this study do not permit efficacy assessments. The evaluation of safety outcomes requires extensive phase 3 clinical trials," the authors of the Lancet study said. "We were unable to assess other immune responses in convalescent serum samples due to the low quantity," they said. Even though direct comparisons between the phase 1 and 2 trials cannot be made, the reactogenicity assessments reported in this study were substantially better in the phase 2 trial than the phase 1 trial and other trials with a placebo group, according to the authors. Also, the proportion of participants reporting adverse events in the phase 2 trial were lower than in the phase 1 trial, they noted. "This study enrolled a small number of participants aged 12-18 years and 55-65 years. Follow-on studies are required to establish immunogenicity in children and in those aged 65 years and older," the authors added.
