<ul><li>Martin Eberhard spoke about his seven-month old startup Tiveni to Business Insider. </li><li>Tiveni is working on battery systems that it intends to sell to electric car makers and as well green energy companies. </li><li>This is Eberhard’s fourth startup after Tesla, NuvoMedia, and Network Computing Devices.</li></ul>Martin Eberhard founded Tesla -- and was its first CEO for four years-- in 2003 along with Marc Tarpenning. But he was forced out of the company after a fall-out and a legal battle with Elon Musk. Eberhard is now a co-founder of yet another startup, Tiveni, which is working on power storage systems that will power not only electric vehicles, but also other energy products. “We have working prototypes of manufacturing technologies and unique processes that makes the systems very cheap. We take the manufacturing time for making a battery system to one-twentieth of the time it takes now,” Eberhard revealed in an exclusive interview with Business Insider. Heiner Fees is a partner who brings in nearly 30 years of experience in automobile engineering from Germany. A third partner Mike Mckovsky is a veteran from the solar industry, Eberhard said. The venture is seven months old, according to LinkedIn. “We are still quiet about it. If you go to our website it says nothing. My interest is in energy storage because it is the key technology both for electric cars and for green energy production. You need to have energy storage to make solar and wind energy scalable. I have been working on how to make battery systems cheaper, safer and more reliable,” Eberhard said. This is a fourth startup that Eberhard has been one of the founders in, Tesla being the most famous of them all. Before Tesla, Eberhard sold his electronic publishing platform NuvoMedia. “That company was acquired unexpectedly in January 2000. Little later on in 2000 is when we hit this giant crash in Silicon Valley and, man, was I happy,” an ecstatic Eberhard said. “We had sold the company, we had lucked out,” he added. His first venture was Network Computing Devices in 1987. “I was one of six founders in a company called NCD that was making high-end graphics terminals when that sort of thing mattered. IPO was in 1991,” Eberhard said.

Indian job sector is marred with the fear of layoffs because of cash crunch or increasing automation, which has resulted in a major rise in the number of resumes on hiring platforms. 
 
Applications from people from IT and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Indian-e-commerce-market-is-slowing-down/articleshow/52940196.cms">e-commerce</a> industries have increased by 20-25%, as per Lohit Bhatia, business head, staffing solutions, IKYA Human Capital Solutions. 
 
"It's happening at firms where the management is either reducing workforce or rationalising the headcount to balance demand and supply," Bhatia told ET. 
 
Last year, there were about 9,200 employee layoffs, a lot more than about 5,500 in 2015, says research platform Xeler8. Major industries that saw these layoffs were food delivery, e-commerce and consumer services companies.

While on one side job seekers are knocking on the doors of these platforms, employers are increasingly withdrawing. Online recruitment activity in e-commerce stumbled from 3% in December 2016 to a negative 3% in January 2017, says Monster. Month-on-month, there has been a 4% decline in hiring activity.

A major change has come in the Indian IT sector because of automation, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and as a result, Indian techies are more and more <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/possible-restructuring-poses-threats-to-mid-level-employees-in-indian-it-sector/articleshow/57512270.cms">worried about their jobs</a>. 
 However, things are not as bad in the e-commerce space, with <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> planning to hire 20-30% more people in 2017 compared to 2016, and Paytm founder Viay Shekhar Sharma announcing vacancies in tech and product space.

Layoffs jeopardize job security; resumes flooding hiring platforms

Several top executives of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startups&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian startups</a> are calling it quits to launch their own companies and the focus of the many of them is one-making profit in short time. 
 
Over 15 top executives resigned from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=flipkart&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Flipkart</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=snapdeal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Snapdeal</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ola&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ola</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=zomato&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Zomato</a> and Paytm within almost one year and launched their own startups and their success story is quite impressive too. 
 
Many of them either grew by leaps or bounds or sold off their businesses, raking in money. 
 
Experts say the top line now wants to make more moolah and thereby are building more cash making models. 
 Bhuvan Gupta, who was with <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> as VP engineering, cofounded an online marketplace-OfBusiness. 
 
Now, his startup has over 100 employees and is doing business across 10 states currently. 
 
"People may call ecommerce 'a cash burn business', but we're already cash positive. I always wanted to do a startup and there's always an age and time when you can take such risk," Gupta told ET. 
 
Meanwhile, the risk taking appetite has also gone up owing to greater aspirations of individuals, ideological differences with the unicorns, more money-oriented approach and a well-connected network. 
 Even Mukesh Bansal and Ankit Nagori of <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> had left the e-commerce player to launch a healthcare and fitness startup with $5 million of their own cash. 
 <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>’s former heads Rushil Goel and Sunit Singh quit coming up with their own design startup. 
 "I wanted to start a business that is economically viable and has a social objective. Priced at around Rs 10,000 apiece, the product is being lapped up by schools, hotels and hospitals. The market is very big. Around 13 Indian cities feature in the list of most polluted places in the world. There are states (in India) with just one air quality monitor," Namita Gupta, who left <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> to launch Airveda, told ET.

These top executives quit Flipkart, Snapdeal, Ola with only one aim in mind

Music streaming platform <keyword id="685487" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spotify" source="Orion">Spotify</keyword> founder Daniel Ek has launched a new startup called <keyword id="16357874" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Neko-Health" source="Orion">Neko Health</keyword> based in Sweden, which specialises in providing body scans powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Daniel Ek founded the company along with Hjalmar Nilsonne, who is a co-founder and CEO of Neko Health, with the vision to create a healthcare system that can help people stay healthy through preventive measures and early detection, according to Neko Health's LinkedIn post. The startup was officially launched after four years of research and product development, reports Sifted. "Early detection and prevention of serious illness would mean that we can avoid both the human suffering and the high social costs that serious illness entails. With our technology and AI, that future is now a possibility. This could be the basis for a whole new era in healthcare," Nilsonne, was quoted as saying. People with skin and heart issues, according to the startup, can get the Neko Body Scan and a thorough examination of their health in their first health centre in Stockholm, Sweden. Ek and Nilsonne founded HJN Sverige, now Neko Health, in 2018 and have since raised more than 30 million pound (approximately $32 million) in funding, primarily from Ek and his moonshot investment firm Prima Materia, said the report. Meanwhile, Spotify announced its premium subscribers base has touched 205 million, representing a 14 per cent increase year-on-year. This makes Spotify the world's first music streaming company to achieve such a large user base. Spotify founder forays into healthcare industry, launches new startup

Well, the employees of New York startup <a href="http://yplanapp.com/">YPlan </a>did exactly that. 
The company, which makes <a href="http://yplanapp.com/" target="_blank">an app that curates nightly entertainment in NYC and London</a>, sourced all its desks from <keyword id="1428132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hurricane-Sandy">Hurricane Sandy</keyword> debris. And the employees helped make them.

A few months before YPlan opened its new offices in Manhattan, employees road-tripped to a <a href="http://nycityslab.com/" target="_blank">workshop</a> north of the city to work alongside Robert Rising, a man who calls himself "<a href="http://nycityslab.com/Black_LumberJack.php" target="_blank">The Black Lumberjack</a>."

All-in-all, the employees helped him create 25 desks from this reclaimed wood.
Jessica Hack, YPlan's operations manager, said the team knew that it wanted to locally-source all of the furnishings for its new office to support the city (the company first was founded in London). Using Sandy debris was the perfect fit. 
"We thought that it would be really cool to have something in our office connected to an event that was so huge for the city,"Jessica Hack, YPlan's operations manager, told Business Insider. 
By helping Rising build the desks, YPlan also kept costs down and gave its new employees the opportunity to grow closer through team-bonding.

"Since then, we've been growing at double the pace as we did when we launched in London," co-founder Rytis Vitkauskas says. This NYC Startup Made All Its Own Desks From Hurricane Sandy Debris 

<ul><li>Insurtech startup <keyword id="4943836" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Acko">Acko</keyword> has raised $65 million in a series C round. </li><li>Founded by Varun Dua in 2016, the startup has marquee investors like Amazon, Accel Partners, SAIF Partners among others. </li><li>This funding round takes Acko’s <keyword id="51393" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="valuation">valuation</keyword> to a reported $300 million. </li></ul>Insurance technology startup Acko has <a href="https://www.vccircle.com/binny-bansal-others-invest-65-mn-in-digital-insurance-startup-acko/">raised</a> $65 million from <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="binny-bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword>, former Flipkart co-founder, and Kabir Misra, former SoftBank Managing Partner. The series C funding round with a <a href="https://www.vccircle.com/binny-bansal-others-invest-65-mn-in-digital-insurance-startup-acko/">reported</a> valuation of $300 million also saw participation from Intact Insurance (Canada’s property and casualty insurer) and existing marquee investors like Amazon, Accel Partners, SAIF Partners and TechPro Ventures. Acko, was founded by Varun Dua in 2016, and has gone on to make its mark in the Indian insurtech industry. In the recent past, Acko has been signing partnerships one after the other venturing into different verticals within insurance. The insurtech startup tied up with <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/money-and-banking/acko-partners-goibibo-for-travel-insurance-foray/article26006200.ece">Goibibo</a> to offer travel insurance to the latter’s users. Acko also partnered with <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/acko-general-insurance-partners-with-driveu-to-provide-trip-cover-for-car-owners/articleshow/66118573.cms">DriveU</a> to offer trip cover to car owners who opt to hire drivers from the latter’s platform. Interestingly, the startup also formed a partnership with <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/sme-sector/au-small-finance-bank-partners-with-insurtech-firm-acko-general-insurance/articleshow/68269212.cms">AU Small Finance Bank</a> in early March to bring about customised insurance deals for their users. India has seen a slow penetration of the insurance sector but things are changing now. But none of it was for fun. That's just what it takes when you're 29, and you want to launch your first venture capital firm.
Brown met with dozens of high wealth individuals – potential limited partners – and pitched his idea for <a href="http://www.mikebrownjr.com/">Bowery Capital</a>. It'd be an early stage firm based in <keyword id="6355838" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="New-York">New York</keyword>, and it'd go after <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> working on enterprise solutions. Nearly all of the people Brown pitched were strangers, some without an in-depth knowledge of the tech industry.
The tiring year paid off. Brown, who formerly invested Richard Branson's money at Virgin Group and is a partner at AOL Ventures, <a href="http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2013/05/02/new-york-city-newest-vc/">raised $33 million for Bowery Capital</a>. Each LP invested about $1 million. Brown will be off on his own as a sole partner with two employees who worked with him at AOL Ventures, Nic Poulos and Keegan Forte.
Through AOL Ventures, Brown invested in startups such as behaviorally-targeted content company, Sailthru, advertising CAPTCHA startup, Solve Media, and content syndication platform, NewsCred. Brown is also personally invested in a few startups, including former TechCrunch Disrupt winner, Qwiki. Brown's personal investments will be tucked into Bowery Ventures' portfolio. 
Brown will be investing in about 25 startups, spending between $250,000 and $3 million on each. He'll be investing in their seed and Series A rounds. Seed investments are often the first money put into a startup; Series A rounds provide enough capital for startups to begin scaling.
Brown isn't the first twenty-something to start a VC fund. Joshua Kushner, 27, raised money for his own New York startup fund, Thrive Capital. He has since invested in companies like Instagram and GroupMe.

One of the biggest names in New York ad tech is Michael Barrett. 
He made his name running ad sales at MySpace (back when that was still a big deal). 
Then he sold a company, Admeld, to Google for bank.
Then his buddy, interim Yahoo CEO Ross Levinsohn, poached him from Google to run ad sales at Yahoo.
Then Levinsohn left Yahoo, and Yahoo's new CEO, Marissa Mayer, gave Barrett a big exit package.

So everyone's been wondering: What's next for Barrett?
We just found out.
A couple sources close to the situation say he's joining the board of a company called TapAd.
TapAd allows brands to buy ads targeting the same person across multiple platforms (Home PCs, smartphones, smart TVs, etc.)
We hear it's valuation is close to $140 million, and that people at the company believe 2013 revenues will be around $40 million.
An official announcement is coming tomorrow.
