She wanted to protect the assets she'd earned before the marriage and ensure those went to her daughters. We started the process, but her fiancé refused to give a statement of his net worth.That was a big red flag for me. I told my client that she wouldn't truly know his liabilities and debts unless he were willing to disclose his finances. That's no foundation for a marriage. Ultimately, she decided not to marry him, and I think that was the right choice.Still, I didn't push my daughter to get a prenup when she got married. Asking for one is emotional, and I had to trust her to make the right choice for her marriage.<h2 id="b1f04a0f-0cb8-4c8f-a10c-a0718998d987">Postnups are an important tool, too</h2>Sometimes, it's easier to discuss a postnuptial agreement than a prenup. You might not think of a prenup if you have no money when you get married. If you acquire wealth through an inheritance, it can be easier to tell your partner, "I'd like to protect that money for the kids since neither of us earned it." That doesn't feel offensive.A postnup can even provide some consolation if your marriage is on the rocks. If you're still able to work together to define what everyone gets if the marriage should fail, there's comfort for both spouses.<h2 id="79ad1a53-d3f1-4703-9705-368e9d54a506">More people should be using trusts</h2>Trusts are an underutilized estate planning tool that shouldn't just be used by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-celebrity-divorces-work-lawyers-publicists-2023-12">millionaires or billionaires</a>. Say you create a trust for your children. The money in that trust and any funds that it generates aren't considered a marital asset. If you get divorced, that money isn't part of the settlement since it's an entirely separate legal entity. This can be a great tool, especially if you're entering a marriage when you already have children.As an attorney, I've had to be hardworking, committed, and willing to fight for what's important. Those same qualities have spilled over into my marriage and helped me create a lasting partnership.

They would reflect on their year so far and help each other set 90-day goals to finish it out strong.<h2 id="c26c0556-d832-4979-80a8-ea50a12ece9f">Shorter deadlines can be motivational</h2>Gyms tend to<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://fortune.com/2024/02/13/the-gym-flabby-january-planet-fitness-membership-equinox/"> fill up in January</a> when everyone gets started on their resolutions. Soon after, they empty as some people <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-stay-motivated-to-keep-working-out-exercising-trainer-2021-12">lose their motivation to exercise</a>.Part of that has to do with the daunting idea of keeping up a new habit for a whole year. Starting in October instead, with three months left in the year, can feel more manageable. "Even if you haven't been able to get your big to-do item on your list, you can get something done and still leave the year feeling accomplished," Ramsey said.She said reframing the remaining three months as a 90-day goal gives you enough time to reset and kick off a new habit without overthinking it.<h2 id="ecf562eb-f55d-4ddb-84d5-415189249950">Fall is a more reflective time</h2>If you live in a place with noticeable seasons, witnessing the temperature dropping and the leaves changing color can inspire internal change, according to Ramsey. Plus, with the cool weather and approaching holidays, people might feel more optimistic and ready to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-year-network-career-hobby-resolutions-goals-skills-2024-1">set career goals</a> in October than on New Year's in the dead of winter.The holidays can also inspire more reflection. In Dixon's practice, "it brings on a lot of feelings of people being nostalgic," whether clients are reflecting on their childhood or a difficult time in their lives. Often, it can prompt them to think about making big changes.<h2 id="d74962b5-9020-447f-8ada-7bc7e35b630d">It's a perfect time to get started</h2>To make the most of this time, Dixon suggested de-emphasizing the end-of-year deadline and using it more as a guideline. "Now's the time to get started, and where you land is where you land," she said.She also encouraged celebrating any progress so far as to motivate yourself to move forward.To feel extra energized, Ramsey recommended turning your goal-planning session into a social event where you can share your dreams with friends and get feedback on your progress."This is your opportunity to step into a new phase of life, filled with that fresh energy, a sense of starting anew," Ramsey said. "Make it fun."

Sodas have become associated with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aspartame-is-a-possible-carcinogen-but-still-safe-to-ingest-2023-7">unhealthy choices</a>, Emily Contois, a researcher of food and media at Tulsa University, told BI. As the wellness industry boomed, Contois said alternatives have emerged to fill the void for health-conscious consumers."This idea about sodas as indulgent and fun is also colliding with these newer ideas where sodas are configured as healthy," she said.Poppi and Olipop, two of the most popular prebiotic soda brands, have exploded in popularity since 2020. Olipop's annual sales were around $3.7 million in 2020; 2024 sales have already topped $325 million as of October 5. Poppi has had a similar trajectory. It's grown from less than $1 million in sales for 2020 to nearly $260 million in 2024. Both have grown their market share in the US.While some brands have partnered with influencers to push their "healthy" sodas, celebrities are using their star power to launch new beverages.Filippo Falorni, an equity research director at Citi, compares the celebrity-owned beverage industry's trajectory to that of the beauty industry — which took off in the 2010s when<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/manny-mua-youtube-instagram-drama-popularity-controvery-dramageddon-beauty-youtubers-2021-9"> beauty gurus dominated YouTube</a>. Just as social media helped celebrity makeup lines sell, Falorni said their drink brands have the same potential."The influence of social media on consumption behavior obviously has been up dramatically over the last five, 10 years," Falorni said.Celebrities with millions of fans already have a head start when it comes to selling. Actor Blake Lively, who has 45.6 million followers on Instagram, promotes her Betty Buzz brand on the platform. Singer Katy Perry (205 million Instagram followers) launched De Soi, a line of sparkling drinks made with adaptogens from mushrooms, in 2022.PLEZi Nutrition, a company cofounded by Obama in 2023, launched its soda alternative, PLEZi Fizz, in March. The drink is aimed at kids; Obama had previously said, "We know how much concern parents and pediatricians have about sugary drinks." PLEZi Fizz has 70% less sugar than the leading carbonated soft drinks, according to its website.Contois also said that beverage brands are a convincing way to sell consumers a lifestyle. When it comes to celebrity beauty and wellness brands, Contois said people usually hope there's a "magical elixir" that will elevate their own life.It could be a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bella-hadid-kin-euphorics-adaptogen-benefits-side-effects-2021-9">Kin Euphorics</a> drink to look more like Hadid or a PLEZi Fizz to feel more like an Obama — sharing a favorite drink with a public figure brings a brief sense of closeness, Contois said.Still, Citi's Falorni said distribution giants like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo don't have to worry about healthy seltzers stealing away business because soda sellers who make it big will eventually need them to help with distribution.Famous booze-free beverage founders could also follow the well-trodden path of celebs creating alcoholic drink brands and then selling them for a lot of cash. Diageo acquired actor <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/george-clooney-tequila-brand-casamigos-started-by-accident-2017-6">George Clooney's Casamigos</a> tequila for about $1 billion in 2017, and the same alcohol company bought <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ryan-reynolds-apologizes-george-clooney-email-sells-aviation-gin-610-million-2020-8">Ryan Reynolds' gin brand</a> in 2020 for $610 million.A-listers may feel more comfortable promoting sodas as guilt-free indulgences on their massive platforms compared to alcohol. The relatively low price points — a four-pack of Betty Buzz is less than $10 — also mean consumers can share a celebrity's taste for a few dollars."It's an aspirational investment that people are willing to make," Contois said.

This is, of course, huge news for the underserved market of the Denchbench. (I assume that's the name of the Judi Dench stan-dom) who haven't yet found the right reason to experiment with an AI voice chatbot.For the rest of us, the logic behind Meta's celebrity collaboration is a little more perplexing.Around this time last year, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-ai-chatbots-assistants-tom-brady-mr-beast-kendall-jenner-2023-9">Meta introduced a different round of celebrity AI assistants</a> as part of Messenger. These chatbots had the faces of celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Mr. Beast, Tom Brady, Snoop Dogg, and more. Strangely, these chatbots used the likenesses of the celebrities, but not their real names. For example, I chatted with "Billie," the character portrayed with an image of Kendall Jenner, whose chat persona was of a helpful sister-like friend.For the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-paying-celebrity-faces-of-ai-chatbots-as-much-as-5-million-2023-10">celebrity-faced AI assistants, Meta reportedly paid as much as $5 million</a> over two years — for six hours of work sitting in a studio. The deal didn't seem to work out too well for Meta. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-scraps-kendall-jenner-tom-brady-celebrity-ai-chatbots-2024-8">chatbots were discontinued</a> by August, less than a year after their launch.So why is Meta using the celebrity AI playbook again if it apparently crashed and burned last time?<h2 id="b5b28601-135c-4d5b-9c10-917b127344b6">Celebrities might help AI be less threatening</h2>Maybe last year's chatbots weren't a failure by some metrics. Sure, people didn't seem interested in sticking around talking to fake Tom Brady, but maybe the goal was to get enough people to try using an AI chatbot just one time — and the celebrity gimmick worked for that.Or maybe Meta just has a really strange relationship with the concept of celebrity: It's not a brand like Doritos that uses celebrities in Super Bowl ads or a fashion house where an actress is the face of a perfume. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instagram">Instagram</a> has been so embedded in the concept of fame and celebrity for the last decade that it's impossible to imagine Meta and famous people existing without each other (whereas I can imagine Doritos getting along just fine).When Meta's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/threads-app">Threads</a> launched in the summer of 2023, a real tension appeared: Big, A-list celebrities — the kind who hadn't used Twitter in years — suddenly flocked to the new platform, bringing big follower counts with them. But most of those celebrities went silent after a day or two, perhaps realizing that a text-based medium wasn't really their jam. A few months later, Meta rolled out a program to give cash bonuses to reality stars in exchange for posting on Threads.When <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-tortured-poets-department-album-reviews-critics-reviews-2024-4">Taylor Swift released her latest album</a>, she did post to Threads, where Mark Zuckerberg enthusiastically posted to welcome her. There was even a custom sparkle effect made for users when they typed her album name. But after Meta rolled out the welcome mat for the star, she never posted again on Threads.And recently, when Swift made her announcement supporting Kamala Harris, she did it only on Instagram — not even a cross-post to the platform's text-native cousin (for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-kamala-harris-instagram-twitter-elon-musk-2024-9">good reasons, as my colleague Peter Kafka explains</a>).There have been other flops in the celebrity-Meta-ad world. In 2019, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://mashable.com/article/facebook-portal-tv-ad-jennifer-lopez-kim-kardashian-west">Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez</a>, two celebrities whose endorsements usually aren't cheap, starred in three TV spots to promote the Facebook Portal. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katienotopoulos/facebook-portal-rip-amazon">Portal was discontinued</a> in late 2022.<h2 id="f684fc34-9ed2-45f0-89eb-636509c56634">How celebrities can help Meta</h2>So, Meta relying on celebrity voices for its AI products feels a little odd to me. Meta's products are usually really good at selling themselves because people love to use them. Celebrities even use them — without getting paid!But reuniting the cast of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whatsapp-modern-family-tv-ad-us-growth-2024-7">"Modern Family" for a WhatsApp ad</a> suggests Meta might be using celebs to reach normies who might not typically be using AI or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-whatsapp-guide">WhatsApp</a>. And with these latest AI assistant voices, Meta is not going with the hottest Gen Z influencers; it's using Judi Dench, after all.I mean, at least Meta didn't "accidentally" <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-scarlett-johansson-sam-altman-chatgpt-disaster-why-2024-5">hire a soundalike of a well-known celebrity to be the voice for an AI companion</a> like, uh, some other AI competitors. Could be worse!Perhaps it's just that AI is still a little scary and impersonal, and Meta execs think putting a celebrity face — or voice — to it will help make it feel more accessible. Oddly, the ability of AI to impersonate celebrities is one of the things I think many people fear about the technology. But, ah well.My final guess as to Meta's play here is that these decisions come from somewhere deep inside the company, perhaps a decision based on an executive's instinct about what will pop, mixed with some data from the marketing team. I'm sure many meetings were held!I still hold on to my personal pet theory: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ai.meta.com/people/396469589677838/yann-lecun/">Yann LeCun</a> is a frothing fan of "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" franchise and demanded the Dame.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Sean "Diddy" Combs' famed parties are being looked at in a new light after his federal indictment.</li><li>Celebrities who partied with Combs may want to consult their lawyers, entertainment attorneys told BI.</li></ul>Celebrities who attended <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sean-diddy-combs-arrested-grand-jury-indictment-2024-9">Sean "Diddy" Combs'</a> parties should consider lawyering up, even if they attended one of his more high-profile soirees.Several entertainment attorneys told Business Insider that any celebrities who may have been involved in Combs' alleged <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sean-diddy-combs-indictment-allegations-freak-off-sex-performances-2024-9">drug-fueled sex parties called "Freak Offs,"</a> in which prosecutors say the hip-hop mogul "used force, threats of force, and coercion" to get female victims to engage in sex acts with male commercial sex workers, should be especially worried and immediately consult an attorney.And while Combs' <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-cuban-glad-he-never-hung-out-with-diddy-2024-9">extravagant, star-studded </a>White Parties, which were thrown in the late 1990s and early 2000s, were not mentioned in the 14-page federal indictment against the entrepreneur, those who attended may also want to touch base with their lawyers, they said."The likelihood that prominent persons known to have attended these parties will be contacted by law enforcement personnel is very high," said Wayne Dennison, a partner at the firm Brown Rudnick who was part of the team that successfully represented <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/johnny-depp-amber-heard-verdict-legal-team-hugs-2022-6">Johnny Depp</a> in his defamation lawsuit against <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/johnny-depp-amber-heard-relationship-timeline-2020-7">Amber Heard</a>.There is "no downside" for celebrities who attended Combs' ritzy parties, thrown at glitzy locales like the Hamptons, Beverly Hills, and St. Tropez, to be "proactive about potentially being interviewed by law enforcement personnel with respect to this matter," Dennison, who is co-chairman of the firm's brand and reputation management team, said.On the other hand, Neama Rahmani, the president and cofounder of West Coast Trial Lawyers, said: "If I were a celebrity who participated in one of Diddy's 'Freak Offs,' I would be shaking in my boots.""At best, they're a witness in a case that is very likely going to trial," Rahmani said. "The only way for the prosecution to determine who knew what and when is to talk with those in attendance."Rahmani added that stars who attended Combs' high-profile parties could have "relevant information" and be compelled to testify.Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, said he would advise these individuals to consult with their lawyer and their publicist "because a lot of dirty laundry" could soon be made public.Camron Dowlatshahi, a Los Angeles entertainment attorney with Mills Sadat Dowlat LLP, agreed, saying it's possible prosecutors may bring in celebrities for witness interviews.However, Tre Lovell, an attorney and the owner of the Los Angeles-based Lovell Firm, told BI that he wouldn't rush to call a lawyer simply for attending one of Combs' parties as doing so "does not suggest unlawful or criminal activity.""He's a very famous celebrity and has been for decades before his recent indictment," Lovell told BI. During these events, prosecutors say Combs would give out a variety of drugs to the victims to keep them "obedient and compliant."Members of the Combs' enterprise, including high-ranking supervisors, security staff, household staff, and personal assistants, helped host the "Freak Offs" by booking hotel rooms, according to prosecutors. The staff stocked the parties with the "required" supplies, including drugs, baby oil, and lubricant, prosecutors say in the indictment."Combs subjected victims to physical, emotional, and verbal abuse to cause the victims to engage in Freak Offs," the indictment says.Combs' lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, has sought to portray the so-called "Freak Offs" as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sean-combs-diddy-appeal-jail-conditions-trial-prep-2024-9">consensual acts</a>.In a statement to BI, a Combs spokesperson drew a distinction between the "false allegations" against the hip-hop mogul and his famed parties."Sean Combs' white parties and other events were iconic, a true convergence of hip-hop, Hollywood, and Black excellence. His parties were a 'who's who' of A-list celebrities, with an endless stream of people vying to attend," the spokesperson said."It's disappointing to see the media and social commentators twist these cultural moments into something they were not," the spokesperson continued. We live in a world where anyone can file a lawsuit for any reason and without any proof."Rahmani told BI that if there was "overlap and there were sex workers" at Combs' parties, celebrity attendees should most definitely consult a lawyer.If the "Freak Offs" that prosecutors allege Combs held were completely separate from his star-studded bashes, then guests who attended should have nothing to worry about, he said.
