Additionally, the research found that the potential for fraud with BNPL is a major risk going forward. Given the delayed nature of BNPL payments, fraudsters can make several illegitimate payments using stolen card details before the fraudulent activity is identified, creating significant risk. So we know what happened to ruin the American <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>, and we know who committed the heist, and why they did it.But the funny thing is, not many progressives really understand much about the economic system that was in place for most of the 20th century. We know that up until the late 1970s, an ever-growing number of Americans were included in the economy — though of course racism and sexism held too many of our neighbors back from fully participating.We know that tax rates for the wealthiest Americans were high in post-war America, and that investments in our infrastructure were at unprecedented levels for most of the last century. But the mechanics of that American prosperity — the philosophy behind why the economy worked as well as it did — have been largely forgotten.In <a href="https://pitchforkeconomics.com/episode/author-interview-money-democracy-and-the-life-of-john-maynard-keynes-with-zachary-carter/">the latest episode of Pitchfork Economics</a>, David Goldstein credits economist John Maynard Keynes as "without a doubt, the most influential economist of the first three quarters of the 20th century. It was his ideas that guided the policies of the New Deal and essentially defined American liberalism," Goldstein said. In the episode, Goldstein interviews Zach Carter, the author of a new bestselling book titled "The Price of Peace: Money, Democracy, and the Life of John Maynard Keynes." Carter wrote the book to help demystify and add nuance to Keynes's life and work.While most Econ 101 classes simply, and truthfully, identify Keynes as "the economist who argued that governments should spend money during recessions to help pull the economy out of the doldrums and get employment moving again," Carter said, much of the nuance and understanding of Keynes's story has been forgotten as the neoliberal trickle-down crowd has taken hold. Keynesianism, Carter argues, was "more a way of looking at the world than a specific set of policies or policy tools." Keynes "was a social thinker, a philosopher, and a statesman whose intellectual project was concerned with the great problems of his day. And those problems in particular were World War II and the rise of authoritarianism all over the world of the 1920s and 1930s."At a time when authoritarianism and nationalism is on the rise again, Carter's framing of Keynes as someone who sought to use economics to "prevent war and heal societies that have been torn apart or put under strain" seems more timely than ever. Carter says Keynes "spent his whole life trying to prevent war, and he believed that economic policy was a very effective tool that could be deployed nonviolently to prevent war." Keynesian economics was an attempt to bring a more human scale to industry, international relations, and everyday life. "He's concerned with all of these very big ideas about humanity and how to get along," Carter said. Or, as Goldstein puts it, "I think Keynes would have agreed that the purpose of economics is not to keep unemployment and inflation low and balance your budgets. It's actually to live the good life."Keynes absolutely would have been in favor of adding to the deficit to combat coronavirus with trillions of dollars in stimulus programs, but Carter doesn't think he would have been in favor of indiscriminate spending."He recognized that those big numbers are certainly necessary," Carter said, "but the real test of the program for him would be what's happening in the streets."Using that metric, the most recent stimulus bill was largely a failure. The mood on the street is historically <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/18/politics/americans-unhappy-polling-analysis/index.html">uncertain and angry</a>. On just about every main commercial street in America, you'll find recently shuttered businesses. Depending on state policy, mass evictions are either happening or they're looming on the horizon. Keynes would not approve.The history books show us what an appropriate Keynesian response looks like."In many ways, the New Deal expresses the full ambition of the Keynesian project," Carter said, because it was "a total reworking of the nation state, and what it can and not to do."In the 19th century, the idea that governments might take a more granular role in the betterment of everyday life for citizens was almost unthinkable. But New Deal-era programs like Social Security, which provided for a good retirement for elderly Americans, to the Works Progress Administration, which put Americans to work creating great works of art and culture, were an extension of Keynes's conception of the human side of economics. Carter argues that decades after World War II, economists eventually forgot about the peaceful, human scale that Keynes brought to economics, remembering only the importance of spending."There were people who called themselves Keynesian in both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations saying, 'the thing we need to do is spend money, and it doesn't really matter so much what we spend it on. We could spend it on napalm and machine guns or we could spend it on welfare checks,'" Carter said. This corruption of Keynesian economics, Carter said, "would have been horrifying to Keynes," and that economic inattention almost certainly paved the way for neoliberal economists to subvert the existing system with an agenda of trickle-down austerity.In the end, Carter said, Keynes was an optimist who "always believed that humanity's problems were made by humanity. They weren't facts of nature that were unalterable. The world could become a better place if we just made it better tomorrow. It could always be better than today." So is this the right time for a reclamation of Keynesian economics? Is there room for his brand of optimism again? If Keynes were alive today, Carter believes he'd see the opportunity to close our massive inequality gap and heal our social unrest as "a project of social harmony."The first step toward building that harmony is coming to the realization that an economy "isn't just math. This is the way societies hang together. This is the way people interact with each other, the way that people who are different come together to do things that they couldn't do apart.'"Too often, we discuss the economy as something separate from the other headlines in the newspaper — the province of logic and numbers and spreadsheets. But perhaps if we took a more holistic, Keynesian understanding of economics, we could bridge the bitter partisan divide and quell the unsettling drumbeat of nationalism by making life more worth living for everyone.

There were even two 22-year-old twins competing that year.But even though Viall is a decade older than the average age of his contestants, it's not the biggest age disparity in "Bachelor" history. One <a href="https://www.4dayweek.com/us-ireland-results" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notable six-month trial</a> that began in February 2022 and involved 33 companies found that their revenues were largely unchanged and in some cases increased.The key to the trial's success was that employees generally were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/4-day-workweek-successful-trial-evidence-productivity-retention-revenue-2023-1">able to be more productive on the days they did work</a>, completing the same amount of work in fewer hours.And they managed to do so without the assistance of AI tools like ChatGPT. Since OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT last November, workers and analysts have pointed to a variety of ways Americans might be able to use AI tools to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-chatgpt-at-work-job-save-time-ai-2023-2">make their working days easier and more productive</a>. Five experts in fields including AI, economics, and politics told Insider that in the years ahead, an AI productivity boost could help pave the way for a four-day workweek."Any technology that increases productivity, ChatGPT included, makes a shorter workweek more feasible," Carl Benedikt Frey, an Oxford economist, told Insider. Mark Muro, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution who has researched AI's impact on the American workforce, added that "amid massive uncertainty — and fast progress on AI — it's certainly possible that AI-driven productivity could support a four-day workweek, especially in professional settings."Oded Netzer, a Columbia Business School professor, said that AI advances could be what finally boosts <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/mgi/our-research/rekindling-us-productivity-for-a-new-era#introduction" target="_blank" rel="noopener">labor productivity growth, which by some metrics has been sputtering</a> since about 2005, adding that such a boost is the "necessary condition for us to work less."In a report published on Monday, Goldman Sachs analysts estimated that nearly two-thirds of future American workers could <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-03-27/goldman-says-ai-will-spur-us-productivity-jump-global-growth#xj4y7vzkg">become more productive by using AI</a>. They said the widespread adoption of "generative AI" technologies by at least half of global businesses could boost global GDP by 7%, or roughly $7 trillion, over the subsequent decade. <h2>'The workweek length is up for grabs'</h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/4-day-work-week-law-california-congressman-mark-takano-author-2022-1">Rep. Mark Takano</a>, a Democrat from California, is among those advocating a four-day workweek. He recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congressman-takano-reintroduces-bill-to-make-4-day-workweek-law-2023-3">reintroduced a bill to reduce the standard workweek</a> to 32 hours from 40 and make employees clocking over 32 hours eligible for overtime."I think the workweek length is up for grabs," he told Insider.Takano says AI's role in increasing productivity could help the US get to a four-day workweek."I could see in certain industries or certain segments of the workforce, that AI or technology such as ChatGPT could usher in circumstances in which shorter workweeks are the solution," he said.The sweet spot for the 4-day workweek could be the jobs in which AI can assist and boost productivity, but not — at least in the short term — do all by itself."Almost every knowledge worker is creating first drafts of something, whether it's an email, a written document, code, a design," Michael Chui, a partner at the McKinsey Global Institute who has researched the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/artificial-intelligence-trends-2023-business-healthcare-2023-1">impact of new technologies on businesses</a>, told Insider. Using ChatGPT for "first drafts" — before editing them oneself — is one way Chui said the workers of the future may be able to cut down their overall workloads.Muro said an "ideal outcome" would be that AI saves businesses "enough time to reduce hours while retaining economic returns." But he said these time savings could incentivize some businesses to shrink their workforces, leading to fewer workers working longer hours.<h2>The US's work culture could stand in the way of a 4-day workweek</h2>There's a lot of uncertainty about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-at-risk-replaced-ai-chatgpt-oxford-economist-2023-2">AI's effects on the workforce</a>, however — and even if it does boost productivity, a four-day workweek isn't inevitable for all Americans.Chui speculated that some organizations might end up expecting workers to produce even more in the same number of days.Frey said one hurdle for the four-day-workweek movement in the US is that Americans might not actually want to work less.He pointed to the famous economist John Maynard Keynes' prediction in 1930 that massive productivity gains would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/john-keynes-predicted-15-hours-workweek-2015-8">eventually lead to a 15-hour workweek</a>. "But there is nothing to suggest that higher productivity will translate into much shorter workweeks unless workers' preferences or institutions change."<h2>The labor shortage and remote work could propel the 4-day workweek</h2>Some companies that have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortages-immigration-retirement-covid-2022-12">struggled to fill open jobs</a> — there were <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/JTSJOL" target="_blank" rel="noopener">over 10 million in the US</a> in January — have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-offer-remote-pick-your-pay-salary-student-loan-benefits-2023-1">raised pay and offered other perks</a> to attract workers. In the years ahead, Takano said, a four-day workweek could be another way for businesses to attract talent. He added that something "transformational" happened during the pandemic as people experienced the flexibility that remote work provided.The Stanford researcher Nick Bloom has found that the share of US full-time work being done from home, which <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/5pksea7skeju50b/Exec_Briefing_March2023a.pptx?dl=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">peaked</a> at roughly 60% in 2020, fell to roughly 27% in March. But Netzer argued that the "experiment" of remote work may make businesses more comfortable exploring different working models, like a four-day workweek.
