Its total income increased by 33.8% ₹1,302 crore as compared to ₹973 crore in the same quarter last year. The revenues have come in line with Nomura’s analyst expectations of ₹1,310 crore — which had priced in a 10% sequential decline. “Profit after tax is less healthy than expected due to many factors like tax planning and others. Also, the fourth quarter is a seasonally weak quarter as compared to the third quarter,” <keyword id="6379793" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="falguni-nayar" source="Orion">Falguni Nayar</keyword>, the MD and CEO of Nykaa said during an investor presentation. The company said in its investor presentation that its EBITDA margins stood at 5.4% for the quarter, and went up by 147 basis points on a year on year basis. Its profit margins however came in 0.2% which fell by 60 basis points. “The difference between PAT and EBITDA margins is due to our investments,” Nayar said during the presentation. EBITDA stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. For the fourth quarter, Nykaa’s gross merchandise value or GMV grew 36% on a YoY basis to ₹2,445 crore. But its expenses shot up by 33% ₹1,302 crore on a year on year basis, and Nayar admitted on the concall that they have been out of control. “There has been some lack of focus on employee and other expenses. We have been cognisant of the fact and working towards it. Though we will keep rolling out of a certain number of stores, on the current base the growth will be low,” Nayar said answering questions in the concall. For all of FY23, its revenues grew 36% to ₹5,174 crore from ₹3,800 in FY22. Its net profit however halved on an annual basis to ₹20.9 crore from ₹41.2 crore in the last financial year. The company’s GMV for FY23 grew by 41% to ₹9,743 crore. Fashion business mix grows, albeit slowly Nykaa claimed that its investments in the fashion business are paying off, as the mix of fashion sales in total sales went up to 26.4% for FY23 from 25.3% in FY22. Beauty and personal care sales (online) however accounted for the biggest chunk of sales – coming in at 68.4%. Nykaa’s annual unique transacting customers went up to 13 million in FY23 as compared to 10.3 million in FY22. Its cumulative customer base stood at over 24 million for the financial year. The company also expanded its physical presence and now has 1.4 lakh square feet of retail space. Its warehouse space too stands at 14.6 lakh square feet. “We will keep growing our retail presence but we are close to the end of the cycle on warehouse investments,” said Nayar. The company’s other business which also includes <keyword id="6681812" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nykaa-man" source="Orion">Nykaa Man</keyword> – exhibited a 204% year on year growth in FY23.

The fashion and beauty ecommerce platform will launch its three-day-long IPO this Thursday (October 28), at a price band of ₹1,085-₹1,125 per share. The company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/nykaa-may-launch-its-ipo-next-week-to-raise-a-little-over-5000-crore/articleshow/87198148.cms">reportedly plans to raise </a>₹5,200 crore with this public issue. The nine-year-old startup — launched by Falguni Nayar in 2012 — has elaborate plans on how to use these proceeds. But the most intriguing of all is Nykaa’s aim to expand its offline retail stores, even though they are not a major part of its business. Anchit Nayar, chief executive officer (CEO) of Nykaa’s beauty ecommerce business, highlighted that retail stores currently contribute around 5% gross merchandise value (GMV) of Nykaa’s beauty business. Pre-COVID the number had spiked up to 7-10%. The company currently has 80 stores across 40 cities. “So even though the large majority of our business comes from our online app, we have a very large network of physical stores as well... Also it [retail stores] has allowed us to gain a reputation and also a large [set of] customers interact with the brand Nykaa in a physical way, Nayar said, adding that the omnichannel approach is an important one for them especially in the beauty space. According to Nykaa’s <a href="https://investmentbank.kotak.com/downloads/fsn-e%E2%80%93commerce-ventures-limited-RHP.pdf">red herring prospectus </a>(RHP), the company intends to spend ₹42 crore of the money raised from public issues in setting up retail stores. Overall, the company will spend ₹54 crore for this expense. Nykaa seems to be doing pretty well without retail store intervention Nykaa’s operating revenue grew by ₹670 crore in the financial year 2021, even though the footfall in its retail stores declined by 55-60% in the same time frame. Another reason behind the hype of Nykaa’s IPO is its profitability. The company has been EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) positive since the financial year 2019. The indicated that the company was profitable at an operational level, even if it was reporting a loss after tax. Nykaa’s IPO to open tomorrow — check last date, listing date and more

The company soon wants to start its operations in the Middle East market as well as the United Kingdom (UK). Falguni Nayar, the founder and chief executive of Nykaa, highlighted that the demand for Indian cosmetics in the Middle East market is quite high. Therefore, the company would like to take its house of brands — which includes Katrina Kaif’s Kay Beauty, Peppa Bella, 20Dresses, Dot &amp; Key and other brands that Nykaa has set up or acquired — in this market. Meanwhile, the UK market will serve as the first step towards Nykaa’s expansion in the European market. “At the moment we are very keen to go into the Middle East, where we think there's a lot of opportunity for Indian consumption. In the Middle East we want to take many of our Indian brands. I will grant you only exposure to the markets… including Kay Beauty which will be able to do very well in the Middle Easter market,” Nayyar said. The development was first reported by CNBC-TV18 citing sources. Business Insider has reached out to Nykaa seeking further clarification on the same. Fashion and beauty ecommerce platform Nykaa had filed its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) in August 2021. Notably, the document did not mention the actual size of the IPO, but it is estimated to be ₹4,000 crore. The document revealed that the IPO would consist of a fresh issue of equity shares worth ₹525 crore and existing investors in the company ⁠— whose last reported valuation was $2.3 billion ⁠— will sell part of their stakes amounting to 4.3 crore equity shares. The nine-year-old startup has today (October 14) revised its DRHP to increase the size of fresh issue by ₹105 crore. The company now plans to raise ₹630 crore through fresh issue of equity shares. Nykaa is expected to raise this capital at a <a href="https://www.livemint.com/market/ipo/nykaa-looks-to-list-at-4-5-billion-valuation-11622573750887.html">valuation of $4.5 billion</a>. It is also one of the few profitable startups to hit the public market this year. Nykaa will spend its IPO money on setting up retail stores and repaying loans

Pandemic saw every other startup investing and marketing their strong online presence thinking it will last forever. Now that the pandemic boom has faded, edtech startups like Byju’s, Unacademy, Vedantu or furniture retailers like Pepperfry, Wakefit are working to expand their offline presence – into brick and mortar stores, or in some cases, launching their own stores. Experts believe that brand creation, expansion and a huge offline market is why consumer startups should open offline stores as well. “According to multiple industry reports, the Indian online market is still just around 10% of the total retail market of which about 90% is still offline, which is a much larger pie. Online businesses are therefore coming offline for multiple reasons -- brand creation, expansion. The market is much larger offline so they would want to have a share of the pie,” Amit Nawka, partner – deals and India startup leader at PwC India told Business Insider India. The emerging hybrid model After the pandemic consumers are looking for a personal touch and visiting stores, which is proving a challenge for such consumer startups. Most cash rich online companies are acquiring companies to help them build an offline presence, quickly. It’s already visible in the edtech space as students have developed screen fatigue during two years of the pandemic. Experts say that Byju’s Akash acquisition was to make its mark offline. And Unacademy and others would have to follow suit. FirstCry and Ratan Tata-backed retail jewelry companies like BlueStone and CaratLane which were predominantly online players have started going offline. Since 2014, Nykaa has turned omnichannel and opened physical retail stores to get closer to customers. Its retail store count has come up to 95 across 47 cities in the country and has declared plans to triple the store count to 300 across 100 cities. “On the surface, this seems like a distraction from the digital-first, tech enabled positioning that the company continues to portray. However, it is important to understand the strategic reasons for the company to aggressively pursue store expansion,” said a report by JM Financial. While it could be a long-term strategy, in the medium term however brokerages feel that going offline could be a stress on the balance sheets of companies – especially those which are on their path to profitability. “Besides providing some brands (and within that only some SKUs) the route to market in the physical world in addition to the online realm, we do not see any rationale in entering this business. There will be significant overlap with other providers such as Jio and Udaan, not to mention its own distribution in some cases,” said an IIFL report on Nykaa. The report also says that physical stores might result in cannibalization of business for beauty and personal care products in Nykaa. It gets a lot of business from small towns which do not have retail presence and this business can be eaten away from its own physical business, according to IIFL. Will buy online but want to ‘see’ offline J M Financial however believes otherwise. In urban and rural areas both, a majority of the population still feels comfortable transacting on digital platforms when they can connect it to a physical presence as well. “The retail footprint provides peace of mind to the customers and, hence, becomes a strong brand building factor as well,” said the J M Financial report. Tech innovations such as virtual try-ons work to some extent for certain products but having the opportunity to access a store can be a game-changer. Purple too went for the Faces Canada acquisition, which was predominantly offline. Quick commerce adding warehouses or dark store Retail businesses are in need of brick and mortar presence, the most. Quick delivery platforms -- Zomato, Dunzo, Bigbasket -- are also expanding their warehouses as they promise to deliver groceries in 10-15 minutes. A dark store is generally a large warehouse that can either be used to facilitate a ‘click-and-collect’ service, where a customer collects an item they have ordered online, or as an order fulfillment platform for online sales. These quick commerce platforms rely on these dark stores for quick deliveries. During the pandemic, online businesses have expanded and thrived but as they tried to ‘take over’ from physical businesses, they saw something they never probably saw earlier – how close they can get to their customers and how many more they can reach physically. Startups go physical from digital as pandemic boom ends

<ul><li><keyword id="895682" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani-ports" source="Orion">Adani Ports</keyword>, India’s largest private port operator, today reported a 68.6% YoY increase in its Q2 net profit to ₹1,678 crore.</li><li>The company also reported a 14.7% YoY increase in its Q2 cargo volumes to 86.6 MMT, although volumes moderated sequentially from 90.9 MMT in Q1.</li><li>Overall, the company retained its FY23 guidance of 350-360 MMT of cargo volumes and EBITDA of ₹12,200-12,600 crore.</li></ul>India’s largest private port operator, Adani Ports reported a 68.6% year-on-year increase in its Q2 net profit to ₹1,678 crore, while its revenue from operations rose 32.8% to ₹5,211 crore. The company’s revenue from port activities stood at ₹4,609 crore, up 30.5% YoY. The share of ports segment in the company’s total operating revenue stood at 88.4% during the September quarter, down from 89.8% a year ago. Its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) stood at ₹3,260 crore. Adani Ports also reported a 14.7% YoY increase in its cargo volumes to 86.6 million metric tonnes (MMT), although there was a moderation from Q1 volume of 90.9 MMT. Overall, its H1 FY23 cargo volumes stood at 177.5 MMT, up 11% compared to H1 FY22. Dry cargo led the volume growth in this period with an increase of 18%, followed by container volume which grew 5%. Volume growth at non-Mundra ports stood at 14% YoY in H1 FY23, while the Mundra port volumes increased 7.5%. Overall, non-Mundra ports contributed 54% to the company’s total cargo basket. “The first half of FY23 is a record half-year in APSEZ’s history, with the highest ever cargo volume, revenue and EBITDA. The company also highlighted three volume growth catalysts – a 6 lakh twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container terminal facility at the Gangavaram port, liquid storage tanks at the Kattupalli port, and a 5 MMT LNG terminal at the Dhamra port. In its logistics business, the company announced that it has placed orders for 82 trains, which will double its total train count from 81 to 163. Its rail volume rose 24% YoY to 2.23 lakh TEUs. The company has also commenced the construction of seven warehouses and two agriculture container terminals, adding up to 10 million square feet of capacity. With the complete integration of the Gangavaram Port, Adani Ports now has 12 ports across the country in its portfolio. The company also acquired the Haifa Port in partnership with the Gadot Group, allowing it to expand its footprint in Europe.
