Ola group to invest ₹7,614 cr in TN for lithium ion cell, EV cars

New Delhi, <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> on Thursday said it has raised Rs 3,200 crore from Temasek-led investors and State Bank of India. The company announced the successful closure of the funding round from Temasek-led investors and State Bank of India. The funds raised would be utilised towards expansion of <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword>'s EV business and setting up India's first lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility at Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, the company said in a statement. The Bengaluru-based firm aims to accelerate its growth by ramping up its two-wheeler manufacturing capacity, launching electric motorcycles followed by electric cars and fast-tracking the construction of gigafactory, it added. "At Ola, our vision is to end ICE (internal combustion engine) age in automobiles and our upcoming gigafactory will be a big leap in India's journey towards becoming a global EV hub. We are committed towards developing core technologies in EVs and cell and are rapidly scaling up manufacturing to further accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility," Ola Electric Founder &amp; CEO Bhavish Aggarwal said. Ola Electric was selected by the government under its ambitious cell PLI scheme, receiving a maximum capacity of 20 GWh.

Ola Electric raises Rs 3,200 cr to fund EV business

Ride-hailing major <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> on Monday clarified that nearly 200 engineers, including some in the software vertical, have been asked to go from its 2,000-strong engineer workforce -- 10 per cent of the headcount -- as part of a larger restructuring exercise towards its electric dream. The company denied sacking 500 employees, adding that it is "centralising operations and is undertaking a restructuring exercise to minimise redundancy and build a strong lateral structure that strengthens relevant roles and functions". CNBC first reported that nearly 500 employees are being laid off from the various software verticals of <keyword id="21936" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ani" source="Orion">ANI</keyword> technologies which operates as <keyword id="6362049" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ola-cabs" source="Orion">Ola Cabs</keyword>. "The company currently has around 2,000 engineers and aims to increase its engineering talent pool to 5,000 over the next 18 months," said the ride-hailing company. The Bhavish Aggarwal-run company has nearly 1,100 employees in its core ride-hailing business. Earlier restructuring exercises impacted employees across product, marketing, sales, supply, tech, business, and operations verticals at the company, affecting nearly 500 employees that "were a result of restructuring in the Cars and Dash businesses". The ride-hailing major recently shut down its used vehicle business <keyword id="3295694" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ola-cars" source="Orion">Ola Cars</keyword>, as well as its quick-commerce business, <keyword id="13052888" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ola-dash" source="Orion">Ola Dash</keyword>, as the company shifted focus on its electric two-wheeler and car verticals. Recently, Ola Electric's head of advanced battery engineering, Ashok Saraswat, moved on. Saraswat, who joined SoftBank-backed Ola last year, is reportedly joining a company that is entering the battery business. As EV two-wheeler sales drop amid battery fire fears, Okinawa Autotech, PureEV and Ola Electric recalled 6,656 vehicles after the battery explosion incidents increased in the country. Laying off 200 engineers to 'centralise' operations, clarifies Ola

In a tweet, Aggarwal said that EV fires will continue to happen. "EV fires will happen. Happens in all global products too. EV fires are much less frequent than ICE (internal combustion engine) fires," he said in a tweet, tagging Hormazd Sorabjee, Editor of Autocar India. Earlier this year, Aggarwal called a senior auto journalist "Petrol Media", and mockingly shared pictures of Burnol in response to the criticism he faced on Twitter. Meanwhile, <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ola-electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> is also planning to launch its own electric car in a couple of years, and recently displayed a prototype. Aggarwal's latest tweet came at a time when Ola Electric, along with several other prominent Electric two-wheeler makers, is facing intense scrutiny over faulty battery and poor design that led to several EV fire incidents in the country in the last 2-3 months. In March, an Ola S1 Pro electric scooter caught fire in Pune on the side of a road, and a preliminary assessment found that it was an "isolated incident". Ola Electric later voluntarily recalled 1,441 scooters as a pre-emptive measure to conduct a detailed health check of the concerned batch. Amid cases of electric scooters catching fire, a man in Tamil Nadu in April set his Ola e-scooter on fire after being fed up with its poor performance. G. Prithviraj, who is a physiotherapist, had bought Ola scooter in January this year, but he had been fed up with its mileage and poor service by the company. "I had set my Ola scooter on fire as it did not give the mileage as promised by the manufacturer, and the poor service," he had told IANS. EV fires will happen says Ola's Bhavish Agarwal after Tata Nexon EV fire reports

BSES Rajdhani Power is a joint venture of Reliance Infrastructure and Delhi government. With this partnership, Ola Electric will work with utility companies and set up charging and battery swapping stations. “Ola Electric has been working closely with ecosystem partners across the country to facilitate mass adoption of EVs and create solutions to operate with minimal restrictions. This programme further augments our efforts to lay a strong foundation to enable the smooth functioning of EVs across the country by creating a widespread network of charging solutions that vehicle owners and operators can rely on,” said Ankit Jain, co-founder of Ola Electric. In July, Ola Electric became a unicorn after it raised $250 million from Softbank. In May, Ola Electric also raised funds from Arun Sarin, former Vodafone Group CEO and also from the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Group, Ratan Tata. In March, it raised ₹4 billion from Ola’s existing and early investors – Tiger Global and Matrix India. Through Ola Electric, the company partnered with several equipment manufacturers and battery manufacturers, while looking to work with the automotive industry for solutions for electric vehicles. Delhi government has been trying to create awareness of EVs. In June, the Delhi government had said that it pilot project testing the use of electric vehicles. With the electric vehicle freight project called Deliver Electric Delhi, 1,000 EVs will be used by 30 players for deliveries over the next 12 months. Some of the high profile participants of this project include Flipkart, Amazon, Bigbasket, Grofers, Uber Eats, Zomato to Hero Electric, Mahindra Electric, Tata Motors and even logistics company Blue Dart Express.

Ola Electric partners with BSES to set up EV charging stations in Delhi

<ul><li>A report by Ola Mobility Institute said that shared transportation will be a major contributing factor in the growth of EVs. </li><li>Two-wheelers and three-wheelers have the highest demand in India. </li><li>However, given India’s infrastructural problems from bad roads to lack of charging stations, the EV journey has multiple challenges. </li></ul>On the Indian roads one cannot miss the overwhelming presence of two-wheelers and three-wheelers. So it’s no surprise that they will form a major part of India’s electric vehicles mission. A report on electric mobility published by Ola Mobility Institute said that it’s shared transportation that can only push the growth of EVs. India has been shifting its gears in transportation to embrace Electric Vehicles (EVs). While news about India’s top auto manufacturers introducing electric vehicle manufacturing doesn’t surprise one now, questions still lurk about the country’s acceptance to EVs because of lack of proper infrastructure. “Unlike Western models, India may not easily kick start its electric journey by deploying premium electric cars. Instead, it makes sense to focus on electrifying vehicles with the highest demand and utility in the Indian context: two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The rickshaw is already proliferating in electric variants, suggesting it is both viable and practical. Thus, appropriate prioritisation of vehicle segments for electrification may prove to be critical to the adoption of e-mobility,” stated the report. Ola’s report is based on its pilot project in Nagpur, while its on a mission to bring 1 million EVs on Indian roads by 2022. The government expects that 25% of all vehicles on the roads will be EVs by 2030. And the push has to come with two-wheelers and three-wheelers, which today occupy over 80% of total Indian vehicles and also contribute to 35% of pollution in India, according to a report by NITI Aayog and World Energy Council. The Indian government too has been promoting the use and manufacture of EVs. Under the FAME II scheme, the government is <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/corporate/government-tightens-localisation-norms-for-electric-vehicles/68294648">offering</a> direct subsidies of upto ₹88 billion to consumers who are adopting EVs. However, given India’s infrastructural problems from bad roads to lack of charging stations, the EV journey has a few speed bumps. Another challenge is the high electricity tariff. Ola’s report states, “Although the cost of electricity shrunk significantly post the implementation of special EV tariff in October 2018, the tariff continues to be unfavorable for TCO (Total Cost Opportunity) economics to work.” With drivers too having had little or no exposure to electric vehicles, it is another task when it comes to the adoption of EVs. In fact, Ola’s initial plan of electric mobility in Nagpur also faced trouble when drivers started reportedly returning the vehicles.

A B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay, Kumar joined Ola Electric in March last year. He is among several senior employees who have made a beeline to leave Bhavish Aggarwal-run electric two-wheeler company in the recent months, sources told IANS on Sunday, amid global meltdown, supply chain issues and several EV fire episodes that have shaken the trust of EV buyers in the country. The news about Kumar's resignation was first reported by <keyword id="4997154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="et-auto" source="Orion">ET Auto</keyword>. Ola Electric refused to comment on this. Kumar was earlier Co-founder and CEO of digital marketing agency GenY Medium in Hyderabad and worked at Procter &amp; Gamble for more than five years. He led branding initiatives for Pantene and Pringles for the South East Asia markets, prior to starting GenY Medium in India. Last month, Ola Electric's Director HR, Ranjit Kondeshan, decided to move on. Kondeshan departed from the electric mobility company on July 2, just 14 months after joining. Ola Electric, facing a government probe in battery fires along with other EV players, has seen some high-profile exits in recent months. Nidhi Chaturvedi Jha quit Ola Electric as regional head in May and joined <keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword>. In April, chief marketing officer Varun Dubey left the company due to "personal reasons". Earlier, Dinesh Radhakrishnan, who was the chief technology officer (CTO) at Ola Electric, moved on from the company. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was appointed CTO at Ola Electric in May last year. Meanwhile, Arun Sirdeshmukh who was head of <keyword id="3295694" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ola-cars" source="Orion">Ola Cars</keyword>, which is the used car commerce division of the company, announced his departure from the company. Ola Electric again saw its sales dipping in the month of June, taking the company to fourth place in the overall category. It saw 5,869 electric scooters' sales (as of June 30), according to the VAHAN data. Ola Electric was the top EV player in the country in April and since then, it has seen its position sliding continuously. The company shut Ola Cars within one years of its launch, as it focuses on its electric two-wheeler and car verticals. Ola has so far shut down <keyword id="2773874" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ola-cafe" source="Orion">Ola Cafe</keyword>, food panda, Ola Foods, and now Ola Dash. "Ola has reassessed its priorities and decided to shut down Ola Dash - its quick commerce business. Ola will also be reorienting its Ola Cars business to focus more on strengthening the go-to-market strategy for <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ola-electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword>," the company said in a statement. It added that Ola Cars' infra, technology and capabilities will be "repurposed towards growing Ola Electric's sales and service network". Ola Dash shuts down at a time when India's quick commerce market is all set to witness 15 times growth by 2025, reaching a market size of nearly $5.5 billion. The total addressable market for quick commerce in India stands at $45 billion, and urban areas are driving this market on the back of mid-high-income households. <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> on Friday poured Rs 4,447 crore into acquiring quick-commerce grocery delivery platform Blinkit. Ola shuts it used car and quick commerce businesses

Two months earlier in March 2019, Ola Electric had raised ₹400 crores from Ola’s existing and early investors Tiger Global and Matrix India. In an official statement, the company said that Tata’s investment is a significant endorsement of the company’s approach to developing an electric mobility ecosystem, including innovations in charging infrastructure, swapping models, and market-appropriate products. Ola Electric is currently running several pilots involving charging solutions, battery swapping stations, and deploying vehicles across two, three and four-wheeler segments. The Electric Vehicle industry has been heating up in India with large automakers like Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra and Mahindra and Tata Motors marking their entry in the segment. With their <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/uber-and-sun-mobilty-come-together-to-deploy-e-three-wheeler-in-india-1563953667519.html">partnership</a> with Uber, Sun will offer swappable smart batteries and quick interchange stations to original equipment manufacturers who will build EVs. Uber drivers and fleet owners can then in turn buy the EVs for lesser costs without the battery. “This (partnership) is an important step forward in fulfilling our vision for creating a mobility ecosystem that is sustainable, provides cleaner air and helps build smarter cities across the region," <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/uber-and-sun-mobilty-come-together-to-deploy-e-three-wheeler-in-india-1563953667519.html">said Pradeep Parameswaran</a>, president, <keyword id="2502101" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber-India">Uber India</keyword>. Uber earlier partnered with Bengaluru-based Yulu bikes to bring electric bicycles on Indian roads. The Indian government too has been pushing for the growth of EVs in India. There are reports that the government <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/uber-ola-to-have-electric-vehicles-in-india-by-2026/articleshow/69679364.cms">could </a>ask ride-hailing giants Uber and Ola to replace 40% of their fleet to electric cars by 2026. Uber’s Indian competitor Ola has a subsidiary company Ola Electric which is wholly focussed on e-mobility. Ola Electric recently gained the unicorn status too. From ride-hailing companies to logistics or delivery companies, many entities in the country have been piloting EV projects. Uber Eats is also a part of electric vehicle freight project by the Delhi government called Deliver Electric Delhi. Uber partners with India's first electric car maker for e-autorickshaws

The Defence Research &amp; Development Organisation (<keyword id="6355142" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="drdo" source="Orion">DRDO</keyword>) that was tasked with investigating into EV fire incidents by the <keyword id="2518729" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="union-road-transport" source="Orion">Union Road Transport</keyword> and Highways <keyword id="48413" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ministry" source="Orion">Ministry</keyword>, has found serious defects in the batteries, including designs of the battery packs and modules. According to sources in the know of the matter, these defects occur because the electric two-wheeler manufacturers like <keyword id="6077703" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="okinawa-autotech" source="Orion">Okinawa Autotech</keyword>, Pure EV, Jitendra Electric Vehicles, <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ola-electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> and <keyword id="12512499" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="boom-motors" source="Orion">Boom Motors</keyword> may have used "lower-grade materials to cut costs". The Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES) at the DRDO has submitted its fact-finding report to the Ministry, as first reported by Business Standard. According to the sources, the ministry has now summoned representatives of these EV manufacturers, asking them to submit an explanation on the DRDO report findings. Earlier this month, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), which comes under the <keyword id="2876140" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="union-consumer-affairs-ministry" source="Orion">Union Consumer Affairs Ministry</keyword>, sent notices to Pure EV and Boom Motors after their e-scooters exploded in April. The consumer watchdog is also examining more cases of e-scooter fires and will serve similar notices to other EV makers too. Pure EV and Boom Motors along with Ola Electric, Jitendra EV, and Okinawa Autotech, recalled faulty batches after the EV fire incidents were reported. The preliminary findings from the government-constituted probe committee on EV fires have already identified issues with battery cells or design in nearly all of the electric two-wheeler fire incidents in the country. The committee was constituted in the wake of EV fires and battery blasts in e-scooters. The experts found defects in battery cells as well as battery design in nearly all EV fires. The government is now working on new quality-centric guidelines for EVs that will be unveiled soon. At least 12 electric two-wheelers have exploded till now and several EV makers have recalled the faulty batches amid the growing pressure from the government. Update: Ola Electric has issued a statement saying it has not received any communication from the government in this matter.
