Dharamsala: The fourth ODI between India and the West Indies on October 18 will be the <keyword id="98224" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh-Cricket-Association">Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association</keyword> (HPCA) stadium's first ODI game in almost two years. As the panoramic venue gears up for just its second ever international match, preparations are in full swing to ensure that both players and the crowd have an experience worth remembering. Bringing international action to the hills was never an easy task, but due to the HPCA's constant efforts over the years, the state of <keyword id="6358126" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh">Himachal Pradesh</keyword> today boasts a world-class cricket stadium. The board embarked upon a journey in the year 2000 and its the development - especially in terms of infrastructure has been immense. The growth of the association has picked up sharply since 2002, reaching almost 150 million by 2008 and a staggering 1000 millions at present.

	The reason behind the positive twist is mainly attributed to the untiring efforts being put in by the HPCA under the dynamic leadership of Anurag Thakur, who led the team from the front with full dedication and commitment which was duly complimented by the financial support in the shapes of subsidies by the BCCI.
 The foundation of the HPCA Stadium was laid by <keyword id="508455" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh-Chief-Minister">Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister</keyword> Prem Kumar Dhumal in March 2002. It was a significant achievement for the HPCA not only because creating an international stadium in the hills was almost unthinkable, but also for playing a crucial role in the promotion of cricket in the state. Thanks to the BCCI's support, the stadium began getting its shape every passing year and in 2007, the construction was almost 75 percent complete.

	As the lush green ground matching international standards was ready for playing, the stadium even hosted some first-class matches and a prestigious three-day practice match between Pakistan and the Board President’s XI. In September 2007, the ICC inspected the stadium to include in into the list of venues for international matches, but unfortunately due to a few shortcomings related to a lack of proper hotel accommodation, the picturesque stadium had to wait for two more years before getting the clearance for ODI and Twenty20 matches.

	The ground is prepared with Bermuda and winter grass and comprises a field size of 80 yards from the centre of the square. The main square has six strips , out of which centre three has the TV camera facility. In addition, there exist two separate practice areas with eight strips for both teams. The stadium in not only furnished with modern amenities and state of art machinery, but also with proper international-quality equipment which include 11 rollers, and 4 Super Soppers.

	The stadium also gives clarion-call to the players and is very well connected with the main roads of the town. There are 13 stands and five main entries for 19,979 spectators. The stadium has two blocks, South Block (Pavillion End) and North Block (media centre). The South Block consists of magnificent dressing rooms, with luxurious facilities for players, match referee room, observer room, umpire Room, third umpire room, scorers’ room, video analyst room, corporate boxes and a VIP sitting area.
 The North Block nestles the media centre, <keyword id="55539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="commentary">commentary</keyword> box, venue operation centre and the post-match conference area. The media centre has the capacity to accommodate nearly 150 people and by the look of it, the proceedings of the matches are clearly visible from there. There are appropriate and marked places to put cameras to cover the event live and particularly to keep a close vigil at all activities.
 In the lap of the <keyword id="52569" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="himalayas">Himalayas</keyword>, surrounded by green tress and tea gardens is the special beauty provided to players and officials called ‘The Pavillion’ by the HPCA. It is situated at a place which gives a complete view of the stadium from its rooms by using any binocular. The cottages there are eco friendly and they are commodious enough to put in more than two teams along with other supporting cricket staff. With a nice little blend of cricket and nature, the Dharamsala ODI promises to be a show-stopper.

Former <keyword id="19899437" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="South-Africa" source="keywords">South Africa</keyword> pacer <keyword id="20046999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Morne-Morkel" source="keywords">Morne Morkel</keyword> has been appointed as the <keyword id="22501564" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bowling-coach" source="keywords">bowling coach</keyword> of the <keyword id="19920401" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-team" source="keywords">Indian team</keyword> on Wednesday. Under the new regime of head coach <keyword id="19914485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Gambhir" source="keywords">Gautam Gambhir</keyword>, Morkel has been named as the successor of previous bowling coach Paras Mhambrey. "South African pacer Morne Morkel appointed as new bowling coach of team India", Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah told ANI. India and Karnataka bowler Vinay Kumar was also reported to be in contention to replace Mhambrey as team India's bowling coach. But Morkel has been appointed ahead of him. Morkel has previously worked with Gambhir during his time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Lucknow Super Giants. Morkel also served as the bowling coach of India's arch-rival Pakistan. He was appointed in June 2023 and left after the conclusion of the ODI World Cup in November last year. But he left six weeks before his contract was meant to expire. During his playing days, the 39-year-old was one of the tearaways in South Africa's star-studded pace bowling line-up. He made 86 Test appearances for the Proteas and claimed 309 wickets at an average of 27.7. In the ODI format, Morkel played 117 matches and scythed 188 wickets at an average of 25.3. In the shortest format of the sport, he made 44 appearances and claimed 47 scalps to his name at an average of 25.3. In India's recently conluded series against Sri Lanka, Gambhir's coaching staff included Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches. Startups taking on Nvidia face an uphill battle, but the dominant  AI chipmaker faces another real threat

He established himself as a player to watch out for, picking up 8 wickets in only his second Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Seven years later, Streak was appointed as the Zimbabwe captain but he ended up resigning as the responsibilities and tension with the board over the pay started to affect his form. Though he was reappointed skipper in 2002, there was increasing pressure on him to take a political stand at the height of a civilian uprising against the then regime under long-time President <keyword id="6363383" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="robert-mugabe" source="Orion">Robert Mugabe</keyword>. India's Melody Queen, who also composed music for Marathi films and was a producer as well, and had the distinction of being conferred with the highest civilian honours of India and France, passed away on Sunday morning at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, where she had been admitted because of Covid-related complications on January 11. Lata Didi, as she was known among her family and followers, was 92 and is survived by her siblings -- playback singer and composer Meena Khadilkar, popular singer and restaurateur Asha Bhosale, singer <keyword id="146736" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Usha-Mangeshkar" source="Orion">Usha Mangeshkar</keyword>, and music director Hridayanath Mangeshkar. She never married, but was close to the late Raj Singh Dungarpur, the aristocratic former cricketer and President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from 1996 to 1999. One of India's most loved voices, Lata Mangeshkar was the recipient of three National Film Awards, seven Filmfare awards, and of course, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989. She was conferred the Bharat Ratna in 2001, becoming the second singer after M.S. Subbulakshmi to be so honoured, and the French awarded her the Officer of the Legion of Honour. In 1974, Lata Mangeshkar became the first Indian to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, London. She had indeed come a long, long way since the time when the first song that she recorded for a film -- 'Kiti Hasaal' in 1942 -- was dropped in the final cut. Born in what was then the princely state of Indore on September 28, 1929, to the classical singer, Marathi theatre actor and writer of musical plays Deenanath Mangeshkar and his wife Shevanti (Shudhamati), Lata Mangeshkar was originally named Hema by her parents, but they later changed it to Lata after the character Latika from one of her father's musical plays. Lata Mangeshkar's association with the performing arts began when she was five and started appearing in her father's musical plays, and it continued even after her father's premature death in 1942, thanks to his good friend, the actor and director Master Vinayak (Vinayak Damodar Karnataki), who took the family under his wings. It was Master Vinayak who took Lata Mangeshkar to Mumbai, paved her way into the world of Marathi cinema, got her to take Hindustani classical music lessons from Ustad Aman Ali Khan of the Bhendi Bazaar Gharana, and introduced her to Vasant Desai, V. Shantaram's favourite music composer. But it was not until Master Vinayak's death in 1948 that the struggling singer-actor found the person whom she considered to be her "godfather" -- the music composer Ghulam Haider, who gave Lata Mangeshkar her first big break with the song 'Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chhora' in the movie 'Majboor' (1948). It was her first big break. Haider took his protege to Shashadhar Mukherjee, the Filmistan boss now better known as Kajol and Rani Mukherjee's grandfather, for his film, 'Shaheed' (1948), but he turned her down because he found her voice to be "too thin". Lata Mangeshkar proved him oh-so wrong just a year later when her song 'Aayega Aanewaala', filmed on the gorgeous Madhubala in Kamal Amrohi's debut directorial, 'Mahal' (1949), became an ageless hit. And in one of life's delicious ironies, Mukherjee's grand-daughter lip-synced the 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' song, 'Mere Khwabon Mein', which was sung by none other than Lata Mangeshkar, as well as the other numbers picturised on her and Shah Rukh Khan. Since 'Mahal', Lata Mangeshkar was courted by just about every music director of note -- from Anil Biswas to S.D. Burman (and his son Rahul Dev, whose first and last song she sang), Naushad (who had asked her to sing like the then reigning nightingale, Noorjehan), Madan Mohan, Shankar-Jaikishan, Laxmikant-Pyarelal (for whom she's said to have sung 700 songs in 35 years), and Kalyanji-Anandji. And she worked with every contemporary composer of note -- from Anand-Milind, sons of Chitragupt, with whom she had also worked, and Anu Malik, Sardar Malik's son, to Ilaiyaraaja and A.R. Rahman. It is said she worked with music directors from 13 states in her star-studded career. After Noorjehan moved to Pakistan, Lata Mangeshkar became the go-to playback singer for every film producer and music composer. She did not disappoint them. Lata Mangeshkar lent her voice to an endless succession of chart-topping numbers in Hindi cinema, from 'Allah Tero Naam' and 'Rangeela Re' to the 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram' title track, to 'Lukka Chuppi' in 'Rang De Basanti', apart from songs in Marathi (she also composed the music for several Marathi films in her 'Anandghan' avatar), Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Sinhala. In 1974, the Guinness Book of Records listed Lata Mangeshkar as the most recorded artiste in human history, stating that she had recorded "not less than 25,000 solo, duet and chorus-backed songs in 20 Indian languages" between 1948 and 1974. The claim was contested by her long-time rival, Mohammad Rafi, who claimed to have sung around 28,000 songs. After Rafi's death, the Guinness Book in its 1984 edition listed Lata Mangeshkar in its entry for 'Most Recordings', but it also recorded Rafi's claim. Later editions of the Guinness Book said Lata Mangeshkar had sung no less than 30,000 songs from 1948 to 1987. For 73 years, from 1943 to 2015, when she recorded her last song for a film (the Indo-Norwegian production, 'Dunno Y2...Life Is A Moment', which was all about gay love), Lata Mangeshkar commanded a fan following and an inimitable reputation with not many parallels in the Indian performing arts. The late Yash Chopra, who was one of Lata Mangeshkar's favourite directors, said in an article he had penned for BBC.com on the occasion of the singer's 75th birthday (not longer after she had sung the famous 'Veer Zaara' song, 'Tere Liye Hum Hain Jiye', with Roop Kumar Rathod): "I see God's blessing in her voice." A member of the BCCI’s four-member working group that’ll study the Justice R.M. Lodha committee’s order, Sourav maintained, “I don’t want to jump the gun, there’s a Board to take care of that. The role of the working group is to find out a way to get the next IPL going. But innocent players shouldn’t suffer. It’s common sense, really. You cannot punish X for Y’s faults. How and where they play, how they are distributed among teams is for the Board to decide.” 
 The special BCCI group will give its recommendations within six weeks. It’ll also chart a roadmap for IPL 9, which needs a minimum of eight teams. When asked if IPL’s tainted pacer <keyword id="6529653" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sreesanth">Sreesanth</keyword> could be allowed to play again Ganguly said, “Well, he has been cleared by a Delhi court, but the BCCI has said that its decision, based on disciplinary action, will remain unaltered. Since the BCCI gives all the players an opportunity to come back and play, I think there should be a meeting between Sreesanth and the BCCI." 
 
"As far as Sreesanth's comeback is concerned, I believe that the Kerala Cricket Association has supported him and has requested the BCCI to help him. That's the way it should be”, he said. 
 
Sourav also gave rise to conjectures of a possible comeback of players convicted in the match-fixing scandal, "I think it will take a few months' time since there is a scope of going to a higher court. I don't know what Delhi police is going to do. But I feel if the BCCI, maybe in a few months' time, is convinced that everything is clear and fine, they will let the players play. We have to wait for some more time." 
 
Dada also confirmed that the BCCI has extended the Conflict of Interest clause to more than just the owners, “Everyone associated with Indian cricket would be under it. That includes the administration and the players.” 
 
When asked if India-Pakistan matches should continue after the heinous attack on Gurdaspur, Sourav thought otherwise, "An India-Pakistan series is always entertaining and a high profile one, but we cannot ignore the sufferings of the people of Gurdaspur. I think the Board was correct in saying that the terror attacks and threats would have to completely go before bilateral cricket ties can be resumed."

She ran knowing that her celebrity status would attract media coverage and stimulate the conversation on liberal issues, <a href="https://time.com/5553528/cynthia-nixon-governor-new-york-campaign/">TIME</a> reported in 2019.<div type="image" title="cynthia nixon " height="646" width="861" msid="82245350" hostid="261"></div>Matthew McConaughey, who has not officially announced a bid for office, is currently polling ahead of incumbent Gov. Khan, the SMART Lab director, said this entertainment factor is essential in understanding an online influencer's potential success politically. <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0747563216306513">SMART Lab research</a>, published in the Computers in Human Behavior journal in 2016, reveals that "entertainment is the strongest motive for social-media participation," Khan said. Some politicians have embraced this overlap.Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has 8.8 million followers on Instagram, where she posts on her stories like social-media influencers do. But instead of talking about her clothing or home decor, she gives followers behind-the-scenes looks at being a representative in Congress. A <a href="https://piplsay.com/hollywood-celebs-as-politicians-what-do-americans-think-of-it/">poll conducted this month by Piplsay</a>, a consumer-research platform, found that 63% of Americans "believe Hollywood stars can make good politicians with the right attitude and support staff." <h2>Social media has changed the electoral process </h2>A social media following is an increasingly important aspect of a political run in today's age, according to Khan."There is a statistically significant relationship between the size, or numbers, that you have on social networks as your fan base, and how they correlate with the election voting and results in your favor," he told Insider. Trump's social media attention earned him millions of dollars worth of free advertising, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/16/upshot/measuring-donald-trumps-mammoth-advantage-in-free-media.html">according to 2016 research by mediaQuant</a>, a firm that tracks political media coverage, cited by The New York Times. "Trump was able to get his message unfiltered to the public" through Twitter, Cohen said. <a href="https://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/technology/306175-trump-won-thanks-to-social-media">Khan wrote for The Hill in a 2016 op-ed</a> that based on his research, he believed Trump won "thanks to social media." Indeed, using a social media following to win elections is essential in American politics, particularly among far-right influencers who followed in Trump's footsteps online.Republican <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lara-trump-campaigned-with-proud-islamophobe-gop-candidate-laura-loomer-2020-9">Laura Loomer</a> launched a failed bid against Democrat Lois Frankel in Florida's 21st congressional district in 2020. Having a large online fanbase "does give a very strong signal," to voters, Khan said. "That gives the impression of power, strength, and clout."<div type="image" title="Omilana" height="751" width="1000" msid="82245357" hostid="261"></div>For Omilana and Fosh, their online clout comes alongside the entertainment they provide for their viewers by doing silly pranks. Omilana, one of the YouTubers running for <keyword id="6263" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="London-Mayor">London mayor</keyword>, agrees that his social media following will benefit his run. "This is a popularity contest," he told Insider in an email, "so, of course, it is helpful having a big social following."<h2>These YouTubers are probably doing this for publicity</h2>While some celebrities have lofty political ambitions, others are simply doing it for clout. Fosh, one of the two YouTubers running in London, said he is very aware that he will not win the race on May 6 - which is, according to <a href="https://metro.co.uk/2021/04/21/london-mayoral-election-2021-who-is-leading-the-polls-14447918/">polls</a>, dominated by Mayor Sadiq Khan. But, in addition to the hope that his run might boost youth turnout, his goal is to create amusing content for his fans.<div type="image" title="max fosh youtube mayor" height="1251" width="1668" msid="82245359" hostid="261"></div>Since announcing his candidacy in March, Fosh has posted a series of videos pranking one of his newfound political rivals - right-wing mayoral candidate Laurence Fox, an actor and small-time celebrity. "I would like to officially add my name to the ballot list for the next London mayor just to get more votes than Laurence Fox," he said on his <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxc2v-hkBhI">YouTube announcement video</a>.He has produced content about <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enrpETMdAU0&amp;t=550s550s">sneaking into Fox's headquarters with a gift</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kj6WvByz8w">stealing his rival's website to launch his manifesto</a>. The videos about Fosh's mayoral run have collectively been viewed over 1.8 million times. "I just thought this was an opportunity to kill two birds with one - to make a great series but also to do some good. It's a lucky happenstance," he said.<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5kj6WvByz8w" frameborder="0"></iframe>Right-wing media personalities also have a history of launching unlikely election bids to grow their public profiles, as <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com./laura-loomer-joey-salads-saladino-and-more-right-wing-media-personalities-flood-into-house-races">The Daily Beast</a> reported in September 2019. And Kanye West's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/too-late-for-kanye-west-to-run-for-president-2020-7">failed run for president last year</a> was frequently dubbed a publicity stunt. Controversial YouTube personality Joey Salads, whose real name is Joseph Saladin, was best known for posting videos urinating into his own mouth and wearing swastikas. He had no prior political experience and <a href="https://www.brooklynpaper.com/controversial-youtuber-ends-bid-for-congressional-seat/">withdrew from a congressional primary race in New York in December</a> of that year. But aspects of that failed run might indicate benefits still to come for Fosh and Omilana, even if neither YouTuber wins the mayoral election: Data from <a href="https://socialblade.com/youtube/user/joeysalads">Social Blade</a>, a social-media analytics website, shows that the monthly views on Saladino's YouTube channel more than doubled after he announced his run for office.

YouTubers running for London mayor are using prank videos and trolling candidates to get votes, and the race follows a global trend

In terms of ambition, the Champions League T20 was to be the perfect tool to showcase, and popularise, franchise cricket. It was modelled on the UEFA Champions League, with clubs from cricketing nations teaming up for a short T20 event. But into its sixth edition, it hasn't delivered on the promise front. The <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> in India is still the benchmark, and the involvement of international teams somehow fails to pique interest among fans who get behind their local franchises (a reason to include a fourth Indian team). From September 13, however, up until October 4, the disappointments of the England tour will be forgotten, and cricket's shortest format will once again drum up the entertainment before the home season in India gets under way. 
 
In many ways, the timeframe set apart for the Champions League is about perfect for a T20 competition. The IPL lasts two months; back-to-back games in the middle of the Indian summer making it an annual TV soap opera. The expectancy of home advantage is less; teams from South Africa, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand make it a more global event, and the chance to see several international players, who could soon be seen being snapped up by several franchises in next year's IPL. The Champions League then is the IPL's poorer cousin, but the unpredictable nature of the competition could make it for interesting viewing. 
 
Chhattisgarh's Raipur International Cricket Stadium will host the six qualifiers featuring Lahore Lions (Pakistan), Mumbai Indians (India), Northern Knights (New Zealand) and Southern Express (Sri Lanka), before the main league kicks off with games scheduled in Hyderabad, Mohali and Bangalore. Simon Katich was their leading run-getter but is not available, nor is Shaun Marsh, who was injured. The franchise will rely heavily on <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/mitchell-marsh/1001/27022">Mitchell Marsh</a>, who is coming off a successful trip with the Australian team in Zimbabwe. 
 
Dolphins: Winners of South Africa's domestic T20 competition, Dolphins make their Champions League bow under former South Africa wicketkeeper-batsman Morne van Wyk, who has previously turned out for KKR. Do you think you’ll upset people with your tell-all narrative? 
All these cases have been tried and the offenders convicted. Some have even undergone the sentence. However, if anybody is upset, good luck to them! *laughs* 
 
The story of Aftab Ansari (Kolkata American Cultural Centre attack case) reeks of the way ISIS was formed. Do you think our jails are a breeding ground for terrorists? 
They can become if one doesn’t segregate hardcore criminals and Jihadis from street thugs and petty offenders. It happens more often in our jails as we’re not sensitive to the idea. However, as the former DIG of Delhi I feel it can be done, and it should be done. 
 
There seems to be an ‘all crimes lead to Dawood’ discourse in the Indian media. What’s your take on that? 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Dawood+Ibrahim">Dawood</a> once very famously said he’s lucky to have not been blamed for the 1993 Latur earthquake. We cannot always direct every conceivable criminal act to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Dawood+Ibrahim">Dawood</a>. However, in cases like the spot-fixing scandal, once the link has been established, discussions should be entertained. 
 
The public outrage after Chota Rajan’s arrest was that we should get Dawood as well. What might be going wrong? 
It’s very simple. If Rajan would have been in Pakistan, India would never have got him. He (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Dawood+Ibrahim">Dawood</a>) has perpetrated violence on behalf of the ISI. If the Government of Pakistan gives him up, it would severely erode ISI’s image among its agents posted in India. 
 
Your love for the CBI has shined through in your book. What according to you are the biggest challenges faced by the CBI today? 
I’ve left the CBI in 2002. It’s been 13 years now. However, the primary challenges remain the same. The CBI is an understaffed organization with too much on its plate. During the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, many police officers from the Southern states had to be taken off-duty to serve in the CBI. 
 
Why is the country’s premier Investigation Bureau understaffed? 
The primary reason is that not many officers from the local police want to leave their hometowns to join the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=CBI">CBI</a>. A CBI officer may not enjoy the same power and position that one does in the local police. 
 
The 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case trial went on for twelve years. Eleven accused died while the trial was on. Can the CBI do anything to help fast-track such cases? 
A minuscule part of the problem is the slow processes of the CBI. In a police investigation there are burdening litigations surrounding deadlines for charge-sheet filing, and so on. However, the main problem is the delay caused by the Court of Law. There are no deadlines for the courts. However, the Courts have their own share of problems. Too many cases in too few courts spell disaster. 
 
Post 26/11 what should govt agencies’ view on counter-terrorism be? 
Synergy is a word I’ve used very often. The job of counter-terrorism can’t be limited to a single agency like the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=CBI">CBI</a> or NIA. Sometimes even the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the local police play a key role in counter-terrorism efforts. 
 
You’re presently the chief adviser to the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). What’s your take on the illegal betting scene in India? 
The underworld would continue to take keen interest in cash-cows like Cricket. The 2013 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Premier+League">IPL</a> scam that we investigated unearthed a direct link between the bookies and the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=D-Company">D-Company</a>. However, to make a general statement that all bookies are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Dawood+Ibrahim">Dawood</a>’s associates would be unjustified. 
 
What can be done to ensure illegal betting is out of the IPL? 
The terms of my contract with the BCCI are such that I can’t speak about sports with the media. Please excuse me on that count. 
 
Some argue that legalizing betting can set up a legitimate and regulated industry the government can make revenues from. Not a bad idea. However, do not forget that a large chunk of the money here is <keyword id="6356023" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Black-Money">black money</keyword>. Even if the industry is legalized, a minuscule part of the actual amount would be taxable. People think twice before writing a Rs.50k cheque, forget declaring a Rs. 50 lakh bet on a match. Illegal betting would carry on despite regulations. 
 
Your views on the black money scenario in the country. 
I cannot comment on government policies and their implementation. The problem of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=black+money">black money</a> is well-known. Let’s leave it at that.*laughs* 
 
The leadership lessons you’ve learned from your term as a CBI officer. 
There are so many *laughs*. I tend to believe leaders are born and not made. In addition to the sense of duty and motivation, you should stand by your subordinates and capitalize on their potential. You can only do that by setting an example. It’s too deep to fully comprehend in words. 
 
I kept telling my officers to act as a counter-terrorism unit and not armchair detectives. It’s most rare to hear of a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=CBI">CBI</a> officer using his firearm. They are not expected to be a part of gunfights. However, if you read the first two cases in my book, three assailants had to be shot dead. It takes exceptional mental strength to jump into a gunfight without fearing for your life.

The Oval is the venue where the final Test of the English summer is played. In the current series between <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/teams/england/3001/home">England</a> and India, England hold the upper hand, having won convincingly in Southampton and Old Trafford. India, on the other hand, have lost all momentum after their victory at Lord's. If they have to salvage something in this series, then they need to win at The Oval to turn the corner in performances outside of the subcontinent. 
 
Traditionally, The Oval is considered a flat deck even though it gives ample assistance to spinners. India's record at this venue is a bit of a mixed game. This was here that they won their first Test in England in 1971, a victory that sealed their first series win in the country. But victory has eluded them since. At the start of the 21st century, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/teams/india/4001/home">India</a> have played three Tests and drawn two. This table gives the W/L ratio of the teams at The Oval.

India have a better W/L ratio here than the current No.1 ranked team in Tests. South Africa, who have won only one Test in 14 attempts, achieved victory only in 2012, their first at this venue since they started playing at The Oval 105 years ago. Among all visiting teams, Pakistan have the best W/L ratio, having not lost at this venue since 1967*. 
 
*There is a dispute regarding the result of the 2006 match. <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/teams/pakistan/7001/home">Pakistan</a> have called for the match to be drawn while the match has been awarded to England due to Pakistan's refusal to play.

 If you compare the performance in both periods, then the first period is dominated by pace in all aspects. In the second period, although pace has taken more wickets, the spinners have chipped regularly thus giving them a better average. <keyword id="17439" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shane-Warne">Shane Warne</keyword> and <keyword id="62118" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Graeme-Swann">Graeme Swann</keyword> topped the bowling charts in the first and second time periods respectively. However, the pacers have held their own at this venue, suggesting that the wicket is a bit of a mixed bag. There will be assistance for both spinners and pacers and team composition will play a huge role for both teams.

If one has to compare the batting average of The Oval with its northern neighbour, Lord's, it is significantly higher. From 2008 to 2014, the average of batsmen is over 80, the most for an England venue. Batsmen have always feasted at this venue. <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/kevin-pietersen/3001/3050">Kevin Pietersen</a> and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/alastair-cook/3001/3056">Alastair Cook</a> have two hundreds at this venue, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ian-bell/3001/3048">Ian Bell</a> has a highest score of 235 while <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/hashim-amla/8001/8034">Hashim Amla</a> scored South Africa's first individual triple-hundred at this venue. <keyword id="2727" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rahul-Dravid">Rahul Dravid</keyword> has an average of 110.75 in four Tests at this venue. Looking at the statistics, the team that bats first and puts up a big total on the board has the advantage at this venue. The pitch is excellent for batting on the first two days and then it starts to crumble. Batting has traditionally not been easy in the third or fourth innings at this venue and both teams will be vary of this fact. 
 
County trends at The Oval 
 Surrey are the county side that play their home first-class games at The Oval in Division 2. At the start of the summer in April, the UK was under the midst of a wet spell and that had spiced up the pitches that were used in the venue. In Surrey's first game against Glamorgan, no side managed to go past 300, with Surrey getting blown away for 81 in the second innings thanks to a haul of 6/29 from <keyword id="2472321" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Graham-Wagg">Graham Wagg</keyword>. Surrey went on to lose the match by 10 wickets. 
 
In the next match against Essex, rain played spoilsport but both teams managed to score in excess of 250 as the match was drawn. Their next encounter against Gloucestershire was a low-scoring thriller with both teams getting bowled out for under 200. Set 267 for victory on a difficult wicket, Surrey chased it down thanks to Graeme Smith's 103 as they won the match by four wickets. In that match, Chris Tremlett picked up 6/59. 
 
In the game against Worcestershire, Surrey were blown away by <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/moeen-ali/3001/3153">Moeen Ali</a>'s 162 but the home team held on for a draw despite following on. Surrey achieved their first 500-plus score for the first time at home this season against Leicestershire as they won the match by 10 wickets. Another high-scoring draw ensued against Hampshire after Surrey racked up 474. 
 In the game against Kent, they were outplayed by a haul of 9/178 from <keyword id="159148" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Darren-Stevens">Darren Stevens</keyword> as they lost the match. Kent had notched up 408 and Surrey responded with 398. In the second innings, Kent managed 292 and Surrey folded up for 213. 
 
The trend that can be established from this is that the pitches employed at The Oval this season have gotten better. Teams are managing to score over 400 on a regular basis. The last match against Kent fits the normal Test wicket that The Oval normally produces. It is good for batting and crumbles away as the game wears on. 
 
Conclusion 
 
The situation confronting India is pretty similar to the one they faced against Australia in 1981. After losing the first Test, they drew the second and won the third to level the series. In England 2014, India are currently trailing 1-2 and a win will go a long way in salvaging some pride for them. With their overseas record deteriorating and with all top players under immense pressure, India can take a leaf out of their opponents book by performing like they did in 2003. Against South Africa at The Oval in 2003, a double-ton from Marcus Trescothick and a fine bowling display helped England finish the summer on a high by drawing the series 2-2. That win was the revival of their cricketing fortunes. India will be hoping that a win in 2014 at this venue sparks off a similar trend.
