The annual premium amount for 31 life insurance policies of <keyword id="55334" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="arpita-mukherjee" source="Orion">Arpita Mukherjee</keyword>, perceived to the closest confidant of former minister <keyword id="6360499" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="partha-chatterjee" source="Orion">Partha Chatterjee</keyword> in the multi-crore <keyword id="1471058" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="west-bengal-school-service-commission" source="Orion">West Bengal School Service Commission</keyword> (WBSSC) scam, is to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore, according to the <keyword id="6357808" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="enforcement-directorate" source="Orion">Enforcement Directorate</keyword> (ED). The figure was quoted by the probe agency in its first charge sheet that was submitted to a special ED court on Monday. It is also mentioned that Chatterjee himself was the nominee for most of these life insurance policies. What is more interesting is that such a huge premium was paid from the different bank accounts of the former state education minister, as per records of bank statements recovered by the central agency sleuths. In these policies, Chatterjee was mentioned as <keyword id="6364914" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mukherjee" source="Orion">Mukherjee</keyword>'s uncle. "This entire sequence of insurance policies and their payment process are proof enough to nullify the argument raised by some sections that Partha Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee were mere acquaintances. These life insurance policies are solid proof of how intimate the two were," said an ED official. Apart from these lpolicies, some other land property jointly owned by Chatterjee and Mukherjee will also come handy for the central agency sleuths to establish the intimate relationship between the duo, the official noted. In the charge sheet, the ED hasnamed a total eight persons -- Chatterjee, Mukherjee and six directors of shell companies floated with the purpose of diverting scam proceeds to different channels. The probe agency has mentioned assets worth Rs 103.10 crore held by Chatterjee and Mukherjee. ED officials said that the assets include cash amounting to Rs 49.80 crore and gold worth Rs 5.08 crore seized from the two residences of Mukherjee in Kolkata in July. The remaining amount is in the form of other immoveable assets like bank deposits, property in the form of land and residences and investment in a number of companies. It has also named Chatterjee and Mukherjee as the prime accused in the scam. The words “Jai Hind” roughly translates to "Victory to India". The Madhya Pradesh School Education Minister, Vijay Shah, believes that this measure will “foster patriotism” in students and has directed all 1.22 lakh government schools in the state to strictly follow this order. While the directive is not compulsory for private schools, they will be issued an advisory in this regard. They also had a trial run for this purpose wherein children attending schools in the state’s Satna district had to cry out “Jai Hind” from October 1, 2017. Instead, he suggested that the “government should first think about the quality of education and lack of teachers in government schools." A move similar to this was heavily criticised last year when the Centre issued a directive laying out how Independence Day should be ‘celebrated’ in schools. This order dictated that among other things, students belonging to Islamic educational institutions, Madrasas, had to sing the national song “Vande Mataram”. In a star-studded Assembly election battle in West Bengal, in which both the ruling <keyword id="43826" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trinamool-Congress">Trinamool Congress</keyword> and the principal opponent <keyword id="14666" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> fielded more than a dozen actors and actresses as candidates, the trends seem to show that while the Trinamool has successfully reaped the advantage of stardom, the <keyword id="204577" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="saffron-party">saffron party</keyword> has failed to capitalise on the glamour quotient. Tollygunge was considered by many as one of the toughest seats for the Trinamool, where the BJP fielded singer-turned-politician MP Babul Supriyo against seasoned campaigner Arup Biswas. The list of leaders leaving TMC for the BJP includes some prominent names like Suvendu Adhikari, Mukul Roy and celebrity-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty. The West Bengal assembly elections are scheduled to be held in eight phases between March 27 to April 29. In total, 34 TMC legislators have left the party to join the BJP – either due to differences with the party, being denied a ticket this time or due to the belief that their future lies with the BJP, not TMC. Surprisingly, out of the 34 legislators who joined its cadre, the saffron party has given tickets to only 13 of them. It was the Nandigram movement -- protests against the then government’s land acquisition efforts for a special economic zone (SEZ) -- that helped the TMC and Mamata Banerjee end the 34-year rule of the Left Front. Will this assembly election once again prove to be the end of another rule – this time, TMC’s? Time will tell, but it shows the importance of this assembly seat for both the parties. Krishnanagar North – Mukul Roy vs Koushani Mukherjee Mukul Roy, the former right-hand man of Mamata Banerjee, will be contesting from the Krishnanagar North seat. This will be Roy’s first election in 20 years – his last was in 2001 from the Jagatdal assembly constituency where he lost to Haripada Biswas. Roy will be contesting against Koushani Mukherjee, actor-turned-politician who joined the TMC in January, this year. Domjur – Rajib Banerjee vs Kalyanendu Ghosh Rajib Banerjee, former minister in Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet joined the BJP in January this year. He was elected twice from the Domjur constituency – in 2011 and again in 2016. He will be facing off against TMC’s Kalyanendu Ghosh. Bally – Baishali Dalmiya vs Dr. Rana Chatterjee Baishali Dalmiya was expelled from the TMC for speaking out against the party. She is the daughter of late Jagmohan Dalmiya, former cricket administrator and BCCI president. She will be taking on Dr. Rana Chatterjee from TMC. Diamond Harbour – Dipak Halder vs Pannalal Halder Dipak Halder, a two-time TMC legislator quit the party after speaking out for months against it. He said he was “not being allowed to work for the masses” since 2017. He joined BJP in February, this year. Dipak Halder and Pannalal Halder are not related to each other. Singur – Rabindranath Bhattacharya vs Becharam Manna Rabindranath Bhattacharya quit TMC earlier this month and is being fielded by the BJP from the Singur constituency, despite strong opposition by the party’s cadre who have accused him of getting them arrested when he was the TMC legislator. Ranaghat Uttar Paschim – Partha Sarathi Chatterjee vs Sankar Singha The 62-year-old Partha Sarathi Chatterjee was a former TMC legislator from Ranaghat in 2011. He lost the seat in 2016 to Sankar Singha, who fought on a Congress ticket. Interestingly, Singha has joined TMC and will be defending his seat this year. Jagatdal – Arindam Bhattacharya vs Somnath Shyam Arindam Bhattacharya, a lawyer by profession, will be fighting for the Jagatdal seat on a BJP ticket. He currently represents the Santipur constituency, but this year will see him switch to Jagatdal. Natabari – Mihir Goswami vs Rabindra Nath Ghosh Mihir Goswami, who currently represents the Cooch Behar Dakshin constituency, will switch to Natabari and fight on a BJP ticket. He will take on TMC’s Rabindra Nath Ghosh, who is the incumbent Natabari legislator. Monteswar – Saikat Panja vs Siddiqullah Chowdhury Saikat Panja is the incumbent legislator from the Monteswar constituency, which he won with an overwhelming majority in the 2016 by-election. He will be facing off TMC’s Siddiqullah Chowdhury, who is also the West Bengal president of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. Kalna – Biswajit Kundu vs Deboprasad Bag The saffron party is fielding Biswajit Kundu, who joined BJP earlier this year. Ironically, Kundu’s nomination triggered a mass switch of 70 party workers to the TMC, who protested against Kundu’s corruption. Pandabeswar – Jitendra Tiwari vs Narendranath Chakraborty Jitendra Tiwari, a TMC heavyweight, joined the BJP after rebelling against the TMC leadership. His entry was initially opposed by BJP minister and popular singer Babul Supriyo, given that both the politicians had faced off in the Asansol constituency earlier. Durgapur Purba – Diptangshu Chowdhury vs Pradip Mazumdar Diptangshu Chowdhury, another senior TMC leader and former advisor to the chief minister, left TMC to fight on a BJP ticket from the Durgapur Purba constituency. Interestingly, Chowdhury was earlier with the BJP before switching to the TMC in 2017. Though West Bengal Chief Minister <keyword id="43868" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mamata-Banerjee">Mamata Banerjee</keyword> is still trailing behind BJP's Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram, the trends after the fourth round of counting show that the other <keyword id="43826" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trinamool-Congress">Trinamool Congress</keyword> heavyweights are leading in their respective Assembly constituencies. After the fourth round of counting, Banerjee is trailing behind her one-time aide Adhikari in Nandigram in East Midnapore district by a margin of 3,710 votes. As per the latest Election Commission data, Adhikari, who had jumped ship from the <keyword id="43867" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trinamool">Trinamool</keyword> to the BJP in December last year, has got 34,430 votes against Banerjee's 30,655. Banerjee, who had won the last two elections from the Bhowanipur Assembly constituency in <keyword id="6354925" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kolkata">Kolkata</keyword>, left her seat this time and decided to contest from Nandigram. Adhikari, who was an important minister in Banerjee's cabinet before defecting to the BJP, had won from Nandigram in the 2016 elections on a Trinamool ticket. Though Banerjee is trailing, the Trinamool Congress is showing signs of cruising to a big victory with most of its major candidates leading in their respective seats. PWD Minister Arup Biswas is leading from the Tollygunge Assembly constituency over his BJP rival <keyword id="6721" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="babul-Supriyo">Babul Supriyo</keyword> by a margin of nearly 8,000 votes. Education Minister Partha Chatterjee is also leading from the Behala West Constituency by a margin of nearly 5,000 votes. Similarly, Javed Ahmed Khan has taken a lead of more than 47,000 votes over his Left Front rival Shatarup Ghosh. Apart from that, Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee is leading from the Ballygunge constituency, IT Minister Bratya Basu is leading from Dum Dum in North 24 Parganas, Urban Development Minister and former Mayor Firhad Hakim is leading from Kolkata Port constituency, Food Minister Jyotipriaya Mullick is leading from Habra, while Minister of State for Women and Child Health Shashi Panja in leading from the Jorasanko constituency in North Kolkata. Alternatively, Tourism Minister Goutam Deb is trailing from the Dabgram-Phulbari constituency in Jalpaiguri district, while Labour Minister Moloy Ghatak is trailing from the Asanasol South constituency in East Burdwan district. Minister of State for Fire Sujit Basu is also trailing from the Bidhananagar constituency. BJP's Nisith Pramanik is leading against Trinamool heavyweight Udyayan Guha from the Dinhata Assembly constituency in Cooch Behar district. The secondary exams will continue till June 10, an official of the board said. "We have uploaded the details of the schedule for the 2021 Madhyamik (secondary) exams on our website. The examinations will be held with strict adherence to COVID protocols," he said. The exams for class 10 and 12 are usually held between February and March every year, but the 2021 tests have been deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The state government had on Wednesday announced that the secondary and higher secondary (class 12) exams would be held one after another in June next year. Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal '<keyword id="913696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nishank">Nishank</keyword>' had earlier ruled out conducting board examinations for class 10 and 12 till February next year in view of the COVID- 19 situation. The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education has already announced the dates for the class 12 exams for 2021, but the authorities have been asked not to hold any test on June 30 on the occasion of 'Hul Diwas', state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said on Saturday. Hul Diwas is observed annually on June 30 in memory of tribals - Sidho and Kanhu Murmu -who led the Santhal hul (rebellion) on June 30, 1855. Class 12 board exams for 2021 will start from June 15. Asked about the possibility of reopening of educational institutes, the minister said, "The COVID-19 situation in the state is under control now. We will take an appropriate decision at right time." The educational institutes in the state have been closed since mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the authorities of schools, colleges and universities have made arrangements for online classes.
