Ramdev confident of double turnover for Patanjali in one year

It’s not the first time that the yoga guru has played the ‘Made in India’ card, however doing that out in the open with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Baba-Ramdevs-Patanjali-is-under-limelight-for-all-the-wrong-reasons-Heres-why/articleshow/52550015.cms">Patanjali's ads</a> is a first.

"The way East India Company enslaved and looted us, multinational companies are still doing the same by selling soap, shampoo, toothpaste, cream, powder and similar daily items at exorbitant price."

RSS affiliate Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) also rolled out a protest against the new FDI policy on August 9, almost in line with the launch of this campaign. As per SJM, allowing foreigners to engage in food processing and marketing of agricultural produce will ultimately kill small shops and units in India.

On the other hand, All India Food Processors' Association (AIFPA), which has MNCs like Coca-Cola and Cadbury as its members, says that India is a free market which is open to everyone to do business.

Ramdev plans to export Patanjali products to neighbour China

Yoga guru Ramdev, whose company <keyword id="6356684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="patanjali">Patanjali</keyword> has been asked to send several of its consumer products for quality tests, has claimed that global consumer goods conspired against Patanjali by getting fake and adulterated products tested in laboratories for irregular results. 
 
Ramdev said that these companies are afraid of Patanjali winning over the customers and taking a major part of the market share. 
 
"Multinational firms like Hindustan Unilever, Colgate and Nestle are bribing people to get fake and adulterated Patanjali products tested in labs," said Ramdev at a press briefing. "Sometimes they even produce reports from fake laboratories to malign us." 
 
While Nestle, the transnational food and beverage company headquartered in Switzerland and having operations in India, has denied the accusation, Colgate-Palmolive has refused to comment on the charges. 
 
"Patanjali has become the point of discussion in the boardrooms of MNCs," Ramdev further stated. 
 
Patanjali, which paid all its pending debts last year, will be posting sales of Rs 5,000 crore next year, because of growth in the food, cosmetic and ayurvedic product categories. 
 
The brand is rapidly becoming a contender in the consumer goods space, and will soon be increasing its infrastructure by four times. 
 
The aggressive marketing strategy adopted by the company is also responsible for the growth. As per the data of the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), it became one of the top three most-advertised brands on television in November, while hiring yesteryear actress Hema Malini as the brand ambassador for some of its products.

Global FMCG firms are conspiring against Patanjali, accuses Baba Ramdev

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=baba+ramdev&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Baba Ramdev’s</a> <keyword id="6356684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="patanjali">Patanjali</keyword> is becoming a major threat to FMCGs and MNCs, who are doing everything they can to stop his juggernaut. 
 
However, it seems there is no stopping for Ramdev as his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=patanjali&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Patanjali</a> leased 1.2 million sq ft of warehousing space across 20 cities. 
 Patanjali wants to double its revenues to Rs 10,000 crore by the end of March 2017. The Ayurveda brand is also working on enhancing its distribution network as it prepares for the roll out of the Goods and Services Tax (<keyword id="6354679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GST">GST</keyword>). 
 
“In the last three months, the Baba Ramdev-backed FMCG firm has leased 1.2 million sq ft of modern warehousing space across 20 top cities and will ramp this up to over 2 million sq ft by end of fiscal. We reached turnover of around Rs 5,000 crore at March-end and should reach Rs 10,000 crore by fiscal-end,” Acharya Balkrishna, who is Ramdev's partner in the venture, told ET. 
 
As <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=gst&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">GST</a> is also expected to get passed in Rajya Sabha, Patanjali is also planning for the new tax regime. 
 
“The entire supply chain planning is being done in-house, unlike FMCG firms that hire international consultants to draw up a plan. The company has hired a qualified team,” Balkrishna told ET, adding “the new manufacturing plants are likely to be in Vidharbha, Bundelkhand regions and Assam to tap markets in the Northeast.” 
 
Patanjali is also looking to set up a plant on the Yamuna Expressway near Noida. 
 
Patanjali started with a turnover of around Rs 450 crore in 2011-12 to Rs 2,000 crore in 2014-15 and more than doubling to Rs 5,000 crore at end of March 2016.

Yet, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Kishore+Biyani">Kishore Biyani</a>, CEO, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Future+Group">Future Group</a> expects sales revenue of about ₹1,000 Crores in the next 3 years from his partnership with this brand. We’re talking of the ‘swadeshi’ <keyword id="34523" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="fmcg">FMCG</keyword> giant – <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali Ayurved</a>. 
 
BI India chatted up with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Acharya+Balkrishna">Acharya Balkrishna</a>, Managing Director of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali Ayurved</a> to get a rare glimpse into this unconventional business machine that’s raking in the moolah like never before. 
 
1. How did Patanjali begin? 
We’ve always focused on the needs and demands of the people of the country. That led to the inception of the brand. Our focus has always been on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Yoga">Yoga</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ayurveda">Ayurveda</a>. We never planned it to be so big. We wanted to serve the people, and by the grace of the Almighty it has been successful. Without divine intervention this would never have been possible. 
 
2. How difficult was it to create a brand? 
The biggest difficulty was that people who run MNCs never revolt against the government. However, Swamiji spoke up against black money and other pressing issues. You must realize it’s the government that issues certificates and licenses. To stand up to the government and yet establish a brand, it’s a daunting task. We have had over 300 cases registered against us. Yet, we were successful in our protest. Our processes are transparent and in line with the government operations and the love of the people is with us. That’s exactly why the brand has been left unharmed. 
 
3. How do you conduct your market research? 
We’ve never done any market research or market survey. We’ve focused all our efforts on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=R%26D">R&amp;D</a>, product development and quality control. 
 
The initial idea was that MNCs offer the best quality. They had a monopoly over the Indian <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FMCG">FMCG</a> market. Indian brands were expected to lose out on quality. We focused on low price and high quality to demolish this myth. It has worked for us. 
 
4. How do you assess the need for a product? 
We never think of commercial benefits. Our efforts are guided by consumer demand. We surround ourselves with people and understand their sentiments, needs and desires. 
 
Our first products were Aloe Vera Oil and Amla Juice. There was no market for products like these. Nobody ever thought this would sell. It started like this. Amla farmers were in dire losses. We felt we should buy some from them. We knew Amla was very good for your health. Swamiji declared the benefits of drinking Amla juice, and it started to sell. Any corporate trained in market research and planning would call this move a foolish move. 
 
For Aloe Vera Oil we were selling it at as little as Rs. 200. Most MNC priced theirs at around Rs. 1300. Our focus was never on the size of the market, but on the demands of the people. 
 
5. Why don’t you market your products? 
For any <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FMCG">FMCG</a> product you'll have raw material, processing cost and packaging. Nobody gives out of their own pocket. Either one has to increase the price or offer inferior quality. If we invest in marketing we can’t offer low prices. MNCs might try to sell products via marketing, we’ll do the same with quality. 
 
6. Are you worried about the future of your retail outlets after the partnership with <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>? 
Our sales would spike from this partnership. Once people see products in malls, try them, and find it’s effective, they’ll become loyal customers of the brand. This would draw them to our brand stores. This would strengthen <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali">Patanjali</a> as a brand. 
 
7. What are your current expansion plans? 
Our Atta noodles would arrive very soon. We would sell it at half the price of most leading MNCs. We’ll also launch Power Boost – a malt-based children’s health supplement soon. We’re currently focusing on ramping up our R&amp;D operations on this. 
 
8. How did you come across the idea to have your won noodles brand? 
We never planned to enter the ready-to-eat category. Our social media expert spoke up about the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Maggi">Maggi</a> controversy. The posts went viral. People asked us to offer a healthy alternative to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Maggi">Maggi</a>. Our R&amp;D team worked on it and started developing. Now we’re a few days from the launch. 
 
9. How do you plan to finance your expansion plans? 
We would get bank loans. We can also loan from partner institutions. There are no plans to look at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FDI">FDI</a> currently. 
 
10. Do you think your financial model is self-sustainable? 
We’ve come so far based on this model. We started by taking personal loans as well. Patanajali can’t dream to be a global brand overnight. We don’t build castles in the air. This model seems simple and effective to us. 
 
11. Have you broken even? 
In the zeal to expand, when we started there were several problems. We optimized our systems accordingly. We decided to expand as much as we can afford to. It’s as simple as that. 
 
12. Are you looking at other brand partnerships? 
None as of now. We’re always open to more fruitful partnerships that would help better our services. 
 
13. What do you look for in a job candidate before you hire them? 
Our system is corporate, but our culture isn’t. We hire people that share our line of thought. Incidentally they’re also experts in their fields. We don’t hire those who have non-vegetarian fare, consumer tobacco or alcohol. They must be patriotic and spiritual. We routinely receive resumes for consideration. We scan them and choose the best in case of vacancies. 
 
We look at a relationship that can survive the test of time. They work here to serve society, not just to earn money. I personally never charge a rupee as a salary. 
 
14. It’s been in the news that you’re looking to hire executives from top FMCGs. 
If there are people in the system that are willing to come to our side, it’s a different thing. However, we never target specific brands. We haven’t come this far by copying the financial system or policies of any company, and we won’t. We don’t consider these companies as competition. 
 
15. Do you think Swamiji’s share of controversies had a positive or negative impact on the brand? 
The central and state governments were against us when Swamiji stood up against the government’s policies. This means people had faith in us and our brand. Otherwise this would have closed down by now.

Roared by the success of his FMCG company <keyword id="6356684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="patanjali">Patanjali</keyword>, yoga guru <keyword id="6355107" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Baba-Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</keyword> has started to openly target his FMCG rivals, like Colgate, Unilever and Nestle, adding that they will be uprooted in just a few years. 
 "Colgate will be below Patanjali by this year, and in three years, we will overtake Unilever," <keyword id="6369109" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ramdev">Ramdev</keyword> told reporters while he was announcing Patanjali Ayurved's Rs 1,000-crore investment plan this year. The plan includes setting up five or six new processing units in Assam, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. 
 
"Patanjali would shut the 'gate' in Colgate. The birds in Nestle's nest (logo) will also fly away," Ramdev said, openly mocking his arch rivals. 
 
 
"Pantene ka to pant gila hone wala hai, aur do saal me Unilever ka lever kharab ho jayega," the yoga guru added. 
 
He was also asked whether his firm was eating into the market share of MNCs, to which he (jokingly?) replied, "We are totally vegetarian." 
 
Patanjali also has plans to venture into exports and e-commerce this year, while wanting to venture into dairy products and yoga clothing. 
 "We will be exporting honey and cosmetics to 10-12 countries, including US, Britain, Canada, African and Arab countries," said Patanjali managing director <keyword id="669583" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Acharya-Balkrishna">Acharya Balkrishna</keyword>. 
 
The FY that ended saw Patanjali reaching its revenue target of Rs 5,000 crore. "We have made profits of 8-12%," he said. "And we are just getting started. Wherever we see MNCs taking advantage of Indian consumers, we will enter that segment with better quality natural products and affordable pricing. At the same time, we need to get more competitive in modern trade. These mega stores will help us get there," he said.

Yoga guru <keyword id="6369109" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramdev">Ramdev</keyword> today said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=patanjali">Patanjali's atta noodles</a> is on course to oust <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi</a> as the top noodles brand in the country in the next few years, and the 'swadeshi' <keyword id="34523" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg">FMCG</keyword> company will overtake all multinational firms in the consumer goods space, barring <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hindustan+Unilever+Ltd+">Hindustan Unilever Ltd</a> (HUL). 
 "<keyword id="3138088" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patanjali-Atta-Noodles">Patanjali atta noodles</keyword> will soon oust Maggi as the top noodles brand in the country. Currently from about a 100 tonnes, our production of atta noodles will be increased to 300-500 tonnes," Ramdev told reporters at a conference here. 
 
 
"Barring HUL, we will overtake all other multinational companies. These companies are taking money out of the country," he added. 
 
Patanjali, which is slowly capturing bigger share in market by introducing array of products at a lower price, will also divert 100 per cent of its profits towards social service, he said. 
 
 
He added that Patanjali is keeping its production costs low compared with MNCs, in order to keep the product price reasonable. 
 
In the next five to seven years, Patanjali expects to earn profits of Rs 5,000 crore to Rs 10,000 crore, and will divert it to non-profitable causes. 
 
Ramdev said that his persistent campaign against black money and corruption over the last five years has created awareness among masses, but it will take time for the government to fulfill the aspirations of the people. 
 
"We have been persistently campaigning against black money and corruption since the last 5 years. The result is that people are aware of realities. Also, the country got rid of dynasty politics and a man from a humble background, who sold tea for a livelihood became the Prime Minister. But, it will take some time (for the government) to fulfill all the aspirations of the people," he said. 
 
Ramdev is also planning to open a chain of schools across the country, based on vedic-cum-modern education called Acharyakulam, for which he is awaiting government permission. 
 
"We will build a self-sustainable model, and every state should have 2 to 3 such educational institutions," he said.

Patanjali's noodles will soon oust Maggi as top brand: Baba Ramdev

It is India’s love for everything herbal that <keyword id="6356684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="patanjali">Patanjali</keyword> Ayurved has in no time made a name for itself. Not only this, several of its rival companies have also seen a rise in the sales of herbal products. 
 In six months ending December 2015, the company led by <keyword id="6355107" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Baba-Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</keyword> has seen a 64% jump in sales, standing at Rs 731 crore, while rivals Dabur and Himalaya have also grown in double digits in the consumer products market, as per the IMRB data. 
 
The figures don’t include commodity products such as ghee and flour. 
 
Not only are herbal products cheaper, they are also made of natural ingredients and health benefits, which is what has led to the popularity of these products. 
 
"Patanjali has registered a near-80 per cent growth in penetration, which is about 5 per centage points on an absolute level, in one year," K Ramakrishnan, GM of IMRB Kantar Worldpanel told ET. 
 
"The first wave of growth came from personal care products only, but the recent growth has been driven by homecare and food and beverages, which still has a smaller base," he said. 
 
Not only this, Patanjali has grabbed market share from non-ayurvedic companies as well. While the growth of ayurvedic brands in the category of ‘face wash’ products category increased to 50% from 36%, the growth of non-ayurvedic brands fell down to 16% from 21% last year. 
 
Talking of shampoos, sales of Ayurvedic brands more than doubled and currently stands at 194%, while for non-ayurvedic MNCs, it declined to 15% from 21%. 
 
"This unusual phenomenon of consumer products market disruption is rare as brand erosion or loyalty for well-established brands generally doesn't happen so quickly," said Devendra Chawla, president, food and FMCG, at Future Group. 
 
"Other Ayurvedic companies are coming up with good quality products at even cheaper prices, which is ultimately doing good. The country is huge and the FMCG market is so large that we may not be able to provide for everyone," Acharya Balkrishna, MD at Patanjali Ayurved told ET. He also added that the company has almost met its sales target of Rs 5,000 crore for the financial year ending March 2016, which is more than double its revenue in 2014-15.

This would allow <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali</a> to reach KB's, Aadhar and Nilgiris in over 245 cities and towns across the country. 
 
When asked if the company is planning to venture into the lucrative e-commerce sector Acharya Balkrishna, MD, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali</a> says, “It’s difficult for us to get into e-commerce due to our thin margins. We would have to hike prices or decrease quality to get in. That is not a part of our policy. We may try with some categories, but not all.” 
 
Patanjali sells over Rs. 50 lakhs to 1 Crore worth products per month from its website currently. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Baba+Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</a> is incredibly optimistic about the ‘desi’ partnership. “We'll revolutionize the retail industry. We would offer products without discounts at prices that most brands do with discounts”, he declared. 
 “There is a lot of avenue for herbal products in the Indian market. We may also consider a manufacturing relationship with Patanjali”, <keyword id="44950" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kishore-Biyani">Kishore Biyani</keyword>, CEO, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Future+Group">Future Group</a> said. 
 
When asked if <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali</a>'s appeal might eat into <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Future+Group">Future group</a>'s in-house brand revenues <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Kishore+Biyani">Biyani</a> smiles. "There would be products from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Unilever">Unilever</a>, Future and other brands including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali</a>. The best product would sell the most", he says. Ramdev adds, "We believe there should be a healthy competition between Swadeshi brands and MNCs.” 
 
While Biyani was tight-lipped about exporting <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Patanjali+Ayurved">Patanjali</a> products under his brand, Acharya Balkrishna revealed to BI India that the company already ships tonnes of its honey to the US.

The study shows, Patanjali is bigger than Emami and Jyothy Labs and is perhaps the fastest growing fast moving consumer company in India with revenues in excess of Rs 2,500 crore for 2014-15. The dramatic growth has been achieved in less than a decade. 
 
In past three years, despite tough rivals, Patanjali’s revenues have increased four folds. PAL's operating margin is around 20% higher than many of its peers which advertise aggressively. 
While most FMCG firms outsource their products and just market, Patanjali played it traditional using the backward integration model. This requires large tracts of land to cultivate and run factories and workshops, thereby investing much more than other players. 
 
Listed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FMCG+">FMCG</a> firms are currently trading at an average earnings multiple of 46. With revenues of close to Rs 2,500 crore and an estimated after-tax profit of Rs 300 crore, a similar earnings multiple would give Patanjali a valuation of Rs 14,000 crore. 
 
There are plans to come out with malted food drinks, and interestingly, instant noodles, where Nestle, is the market leader. 
 
Even though Patanjali has spent very little on branding and advertising, Ramdev's sermons and his mass following may have had a positive rub off on the products. In gatherings attended by thousands and interviews with news channels, he has been outspoken on the evils of MNCs, corruption in corporates, and high usage of chemicals in consumer products. However, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/topic/Swami-Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</a> has no stake in the company.
