When the authorities show up to claim the eggs, all the guests, including Sheeran, are taken away.</p><p>Sheeran does not go away quietly. He yells at the authorities while being pulled away: "Don't you know who I am? I was in 'Game of Thrones,' I'm Ed Sheeran, bitch!" </p><div type="image" title="Ed Sheeran in a suit and tie being dragged away by police" height="1200" width="2101" msid="87724141" hostid="261"></div><p>Director Rawson Marshall Thurber <a href="https://www.insider.com/red-notice-details-explained-vin-diesel-joke-cameo-sequel-idea-2021-11">told Insider</a> that Sheeran being the movie's surprise cameo was always his plan.</p><p>"It was so much Ed that his name was in my notebook when I was scratching out all the ideas for 'Red Notice,'" Thurber said.</p><p>"I was put in touch with Ed by a mutual friend and I emailed him and asked if he would do this," he continued. "I sent him a picture of my notebook with his name in it. He's the most delightful human being on the planet and he said he was in. 'The weirder the better,' he told me. And I said, 'That's my guy.'"</p><p>But it was a logistical nightmare to shoot Sheeran for the movie, Thurber said, because of rules around live performances in the middle of the pandemic.</p><p>"His scene was the very last thing we shot for the movie," said Thurber, who flew to London for one day to shoot the cameo.</p><p>"Because he sings in the scene, we had to be a certain distance away, so we had to have a remote-operated camera shoot him," he said. "It made everything incredibly tricky to achieve. But he was a real trooper. It is one of my favorite moments in the film."</p><p><em>"Red Notice" is available now on Netflix.</em></p>

Some are even pushing for an end to using real guns altogether, arguing that all the effects can be done in post-production.</p><p>Dwayne Johnson is among those who have <a href="https://variety.com/2021/film/news/dwayne-johnson-gun-safety-movies-halyna-hutchins-death-rust-1235104627/">vowed to stop using live guns in their movies</a>. But his "<keyword id="12011678" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="red-notice" source="Orion">Red Notice</keyword>" director, Rawson Marshall Thurber, defended the use of real guns on movie sets.</p><p>"I do think there is value using blanks on set," <a href="https://www.insider.com/red-notice-details-explained-vin-diesel-joke-cameo-sequel-idea-2021-11">he told Insider</a> in a recent interview about the making of his action-comedy film. "Both from a performance and photographic standpoint. We used air-soft replicas that are not real firearms but they cycle and move like a real one, and sometimes we would use quarter-load or half-load blanks," Thurber said of the heist movie that also stars Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot.<p>"I just have never had anything close to that kind of experience," Thurber continued, referring to the shooting that happened on the set of "<keyword id="12365466" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="rust" source="Orion">Rust</keyword>" that left its cinematographer dead and its director wounded. "The armorers that I work with are so, so careful and the first [assistant directors] are so careful it just has never been an issue."</p><p>Rawson believes the best approach going forward is to "mix and match"- film some firearm sequences where the blast is done through CGI and others where blanks are used. The director also feels going forward there should be extra steps taken if you want to use blanks. </p><p>"No one should be at risk and I think we need to take a hard look at our procedures and our precautions. Who came up with that Vin Diesel joke? And his thoughts on live guns on set following the <a href="https://www.insider.com/alec-baldwin-shooting-rust-cinematographer-dead-timeline-2021-10">fatal shooting on the Alec Baldwin movie, "Rust."</a></p><div type="image" title="Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson in a mine shaft" height="1533" width="2044" msid="87673061" hostid="261"></div><h2>For 2 weeks, shooting took place inside a mine shaft 400 feet underground</h2><p>In the final big action sequence of the movie, FBI profiler John Hartley (Johnson) and thief Nolan Booth (Reynolds) team up with fellow art thief The Bishop (Gadot) to run from authorities by speeding down a giant mine shaft that's attached to a bunker of buried Nazi treasure.</p><p>Though many will think this is just another CGI-manufactured action sequence, Thurber says they really did go deep underground to film it.</p><p>"We spent two weeks 400 feet underground in a mine shaft just outside Atlanta shooting that sequence," Thurber said. "Those were long, cold, dark days."</p><p>Thurber admits that the shots of the actors in that sequence were done on a soundstage, but the high-speed car chases with stunt doubles were done in the real mine shaft.</p><p>"People don't believe you go and do these things because of how great visual effects have gotten," Thurber added. "But I'm really glad we shot that practically. I think it made all the difference."</p><h2>Did you catch that nod to "Titanic" in the movie? Ryan Reynolds came up with that</h2><h2><div type="image" title="Titanic line on boat" height="588" width="1440" msid="87673062" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>You may have noticed that Booth's boat in Bali has a phrase written on the side: "We're going to make it, Rose."</p><p>"Titanic" fans will know that's what Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack says to Kate Winslet's Rose right before they go into the icy water after the Titanic sinks.</p><p>Thurber said the idea of putting that line on the boat was all Reynolds.</p><p>"They were making the boat and my production designer Andy Nicholson asked me, 'Do you want anything written on the side?'" Thurber recalled.</p><p>"I think I texted Ryan and was like, 'Hey, man, what do you want on the side of your boat?'" he continued. "And literally three seconds later he texted back, 'We're going to make it, Rose.' I was like perfect, and that was it." </p><div type="image" title="alfred hitchcock" height="1331" width="2000" msid="87673065" hostid="261"></div><h2>Thurber's favorite line in the movie is an old Alfred Hitchcock term</h2><p>Thurber loves a good movie reference and there are a bunch in "Red Notice," but his favorite is the offhand remark Booth gives Hartley while they are looking for a box in a massive underground warehouse of Nazi loot.</p><p>Hartley asked Booth: "How are we going to find this egg?" To which Booth responds: "I don't know, look for a box that says MacGuffin."</p><p>MacGuffin was a term used by Alfred Hitchcock for a thing in his stories that the characters are focused on but is insignificant to the audience. Like the cash that Janet Leigh's character steals at the beginning of "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Psycho-Anthony-Perkins/dp/B000I9YLWG" rel="nofollow sponsored">Psycho</a>" that leads her to the Bates Motel. Characters throughout the movie wonder where the money is, but all we care about is that she died in that shower at the hands of some maniac.</p><p>For "Red Notice," the main characters are looking for jeweled eggs. But all we the viewers really care about is the adventure they are going on.</p><p>"Ryan's MacGuffin line makes me laugh every time," said Thurber, who confirmed that he wrote the line.</p><p>"Some of these jokes are just for me," he added. Though Thurber would not confirm plans for a sequel, he admits he's been thinking of how to do it since shooting began.</p><p>"My brain was ticking away figuring out the puzzle of what I would do next," he said. "I just really love the world and the tone and characters so much that I can't help myself but think about what the next heist would be. It's certainly something that could happen."</p><p>A sequel idea we threw at Thurber was the possibility of seeing Hartley's father, who he explains in the movie is also a con artist.</p><p>"That's not half bad and if I'm being honest it's something that's crossed my mind more than once," Thurber admitted.</p>

'Red Notice' director talks spoilers, why he won't say who came up with the Vin Diesel joke, and how that surprise cameo was pulled off

One of the memorable scenes from the movie was when Aniston's and Roberts' characters teach Poulter's character how to kiss, which eventually <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/gossip/la-et-mg-jennifer-aniston-best-kiss-will-poulter-emma-roberts-20140414-story.html">won the MTV Movie Award for best kiss in 2014.</a></p><p>Poulter, who was 19 at the time the movie was filmed, told the Independent that he "felt very sorry" for his costars having to kiss him.</p><p>"It's one of those things — any scene where there's some level of intimacy in the context of a broad comedy, where it's very much a joke and it's not played with romantic sincerity, is always really awkward," Poulter recalled. "Obviously my main concern in that moment was for Jen and Emma, who I felt very sorry for."</p><p>He continued: "It's weird. It's one of those scenes that, to be honest, 60% of bars and pubs I go into, blokes shout things about that scene at me or ask weird questions I've been asked a million times before. I don't even know how to respond to them. This was before intimacy coordinators, which I really would have appreciated, and I'm sure Emma and Jen would have, too."</p><p>Intimacy coordinator is a recent role used in film and TV productions to <a href="https://www.insider.com/truth-about-about-filming-sex-scenes-intimacy-coordinator-myths-2021">help choreograph intimate scenes between actors.</a></p><p>During an interview with <a href="https://collider.com/jason-sudeikis-jennifer-aniston-were-the-millers-interview/">Collider in 2013</a>, the movie's director Rawson Marshall Thurber revealed that it was Aniston's idea to kiss Poulter during the scene. </p><p>"I was just thinking about the kissing scene, because I remember in the script when we went to go shoot, originally it was just Kenny and Casey, it was just Will and Emma," Thurber said. The premise was simple: a guy has to get through a burning building full of terrorists to save his family. And looking at the screen in the editing suite, Thurber knew just the guy to play him.</br></p><p>"Skyscraper" marks the second time Dwayne Johnson and Thurber have worked together, but this is a very different project than "Central Intelligence," an action comedy where The Rock and Kevin Hart throw out jokes while dodging bullets. This time, Thurber was looking for something different from his star.</p><p>Mixing "The Towering Inferno" with "Die Hard," Thurber envisioned Johnson playing a man who is so determined to save his family that he will do insane things to save them, like jump off a crane hundreds of stories in the air, hold up a bridge on his own, and scale the outside of the building with just duct tape stuck to his hands.</p><p>Oh, and one other thing: "I told him, 'You're missing your left leg,'" Thurber recalled to Business Insider about his first talk with Johnson regarding the character. His latest job is assessing the 240-floor Hong Kong skyscraper, The Pearl - touted as the largest building in the world. Will, with his family along for the business trip - becoming the first-ever residents of The Pearl - runs into trouble when terrorists show up to take over the building. And that's when Will has to go into poppa bear mode.<p>The idea quickly became one of the hottest projects in Hollywood when Thurber and Johnson began pitching it to studios in May of 2016. Besides having the biggest action star in the world attached to it, an added bonus was that Thurber set the movie in China, a region studios have become obsessed with as it's the fastest growing movie market in the world (and will surpass the US in the years to come as the biggest).</p><p>Needless to say, Thurber and Johnson were playing with house money.</p><p>"We went around town to 10 different buyers, and typically when you try to sell any pitch you get one, maybe two, offers, but on this one nine out of 10 places bid on it and the tenth didn't bid because it was already priced out of their range," Thurber said, noting the production budget on the film was around $125 million.</p><p>The eventual winner was Universal and Legendary Entertainment, for a <a href="https://deadline.com/2016/05/dwayne-johnson-action-movie-china-auction-rawson-thurber-1201762984/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported seven-figure deal</a>. Along with both co-financing the project, Legendary has ties to the Middle Kingdom as it's owned by Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda, so the movie would definitely have top exposure there. Universal handled worldwide distribution.</p><p>But now Thurber was hit with a sudden jolt of panic: "You go into these rooms and you say here's my story and they say, 'Great go make it,' and then you kind of go, 'O<em>h s--t, I have to go make it</em>!'"</p><h2>What it's like to work with The Rock</h2><p>Thurber may be known for comedies like "Central Intelligence," "We're the Millers," and "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," but he said he'd wanted to make an action movie since he was eight, when his mother took him to see "Raiders of the Lost Ark." With Johnson as his wing man he finally could do it. And the biggest challenge was making sure audiences would understand that they weren't walking into an action comedy. As Thurber put it, "You don't want to stop and do dick jokes in a movie like this."</p><p>However, he admitted at first he did write more jokes than you usually find in a disaster movie like "Skyscraper." They were supposed to be tension relievers.</p><p>"But in the editing process we tried moments of levity, more than jokes," he said, realizing that "a little goes a long way" when it came to being lighthearted in this kind of movie.</p><p>He said what helped greatly in finding the right tone was the story-first attitude Johnson brought to the movie. Thurber had seen it in "Central Intelligence," but it really stood out while making "Skyscraper." It was never about Johnson's ego being stroked, or making sure a big speech of his, or a major scene, didn't get cut - all the star cared about was what was right for the story.</p><p>That was most evident when making the ending of "Skyscraper."</p><p>In March, Johnson posted on his Instagram that following a test screening it was decided to reshoot what he called in the post, "pivotal scenes." Thurber told Business Insider that it was, in fact, the ending of the movie.</p><p>"The original ending is very similar to what's in the final version," he explained. "The original was a little bit more poetic and smaller and a little more quiet, it didn't give me or anyone on the film what you want to feel."</p><p>And Thurber said Johnson was leading the charge in going back and redoing the ending to give the audience a more "Rocky" ending, as the director described it. In reality, Johnson could have just moved on to his next movie and let Thurber figure it all out in post with the existing footage. But Thurber said that's why Johnson is at the level he's at today, because he will go the extra mile.</p><p>"When you're sitting at the top of the heap and you're the biggest movie star in the world you don't have to be vulnerable, you don't have to take chances like this," Thurber said. "It's a real credit to him that he did."</p><p>And the Thurber/Johnson collaboration will not end with "Skyscraper."</p><p>When the two were wrapping up on "Skyscraper" in the beginning of the year, they went and sold another movie idea to Universal and Legendary. The $130 million-budgeted globetrotting action movie, which is centered around the capture of the most wanted art thief in the world, will be written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber ("Central Intelligence," "Skyscraper"). </p><p>The announcement was a complete shock to many in Hollywood, as the project had been in development at Universal since early last year when <a href="https://deadline.com/2018/02/red-notice-dwayne-johnson-rawson-thurber-universal-pictures-legendary-action-vehicle-beau-flynn-skyscraper-1202281978/">the studio bought it</a> after a heated bidding war that involved all the major studios (Deadline noted that Netflix was also in the mix back then). It's a rarity because Beijing typically reserves this time of year for its domestic releases rather than Hollywood hits.</p><p>As THR points out, the coveted release could have something to do with the fact that the film's production company, Legendary, is owned by Chinese conglomerate Wanda, which actually just announced <a href="https://variety.com/2018/film/news/dalian-wanda-consolidate-film-units-china-1202857977/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plans to consolidate</a> its entertainment businesses.</p><p>But it also further exemplifies Johnson's dominance. Johnson is already a huge box-office draw in China. His last film, "Rampage," scored a $55 million opening there, which was $20 million more than in the US. It went on to make $156 million in China, compared to just $97 million in the US. With other US summer blockbusters failing to land releases there this summer, his star power will grow even larger.&#xa0;</p><p>It doesn't hurt that "Skyscraper" also takes place in China. In the Rawson Marshall Thurber-directed film, Johnson plays US war veteran Will Sawyer, who evaluates skyscraper security. While assessing the tallest building in the world in Hong Kong, he's framed for setting it ablaze.&#xa0;</p><p>Johnson's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dwayne-johnson-wins-box-office-in-china-proves-he-is-biggest-movie-star-2018-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dominance in China</a> has been years in the making, as Business Insider reported in April when "Rampage" hit theaters. The Rock's new movie is getting a rare summer release in China, further proving his star power there

That 50% will be split up, with Johnson receiving 30%, Thurber receiving 10%, and the other producers on the movie getting 10%.</p><p>And that's not all. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Sony</span></p><p class="caption">"Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle."</p></div><p></p></div></div>For each $25 million worldwide box office earned after the movie grosses 2.5 times its budget, Johnson, Thurber, and the producers pocket $1 million each.</p><p>To put that in perspective, if a similar deal was made for Sony's "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" - which was made for <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=jumanji2016.htm">$90 million</a> and has now grossed over $931 million - Johnson would have pocketed tens of millions of dollars after his base pay.</p><p>According to the Journal, all the major studios were interested in the "Red Notice" project and Universal won out. The final terms were not identical to the terms sheet, but according to the paper they "were close." The movie has a budget of around $160 million.</p><p>Regardless, what Johnson can command is unheard of in today's Hollywood. </p><p>Not since the late 1990s and early 2000s when actors like Will Smith, George Clooney, and Julia Roberts were earning $20 million paydays has the industry seen this. A big reason for that is with the popularity now of IPs and effects-heavy projects (like "Avatar"), moviegoers are buying tickets less for the stars, and more for the characters.</p><p>But Johnson is a different breed. With his superhero size and charisma, Johnson is more the draw than him playing a known character (similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone in the 1980s).</p><p>We may see "Red Notice" by 2020, but there's a lot of The Rock before then. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>After a lousy opening in North America last weekend, Dwayne Johnson's "Skyscraper" rebounded big time in its second weekend in theaters.</strong></li><li><strong>It was the highest-grossing movie in the world over the weekend with a global box office of $85 million.</strong></li><li><strong>A big reason for that is because it did so well in China.</strong></li></ul><p><br>Looks like you can table all of the "Rock fatigue" chatter.</br></p><p>After Dwayne Johnson's latest movie, "Skyscraper," opened domestically last weekend with a very soft <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&amp;id=skyscraper.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$24.9 million</a> on over 3,700 screens, the trades were quick to attribute the worst opening for The Rock in three years to overexposure of the larger-than-life superstar.</p><p>But many forgot one thing: The movie hadn't opened in China yet.</p><p>In the past few years, Johnson has put extra time into making sure that his brand is prevalent in the Middle Kingdom, and Universal/Legendary Entertainment, the backers of "Skyscraper," are now reaping the rewards.</p><p>"Skyscraper" opened in China over the weekend and was the top movie with a $47.7 million opening (it earned $11 million in North America and $27.3 million in other international territories). The movie became the top-earning title of the weekend worldwide with an $85 million take.</p><p>For the most part, it's a moral victory for Johnson. With a slew of popular holdovers in theaters and stiff competition coming this weekend from "Mission: Impossible - Fallout," "Skyscraper" will not have much time on the mountain top. But what this weekend did prove was why Johnson is the biggest - and most savvy - movie star working right now.</p><h2>Doubling down on the China market</h2><p>The performance of "Skyscraper" in China wasn't just because posters of Johnson, hanging from a very large building, were up all over the place. Like "Rampage," when&#xa0;<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dwayne-johnson-wins-box-office-in-china-proves-he-is-biggest-movie-star-2018-4">the actor flew to Shanghai to promote the movie</a>&#xa0;(and helped it earn over <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=intl&amp;country=CH&amp;id=newlinetentpole2018.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$150 million in its China run</a>), Johnson was back hustling in China for his latest movie.</p><p>This time he went to Beijing and Hong Kong, where the movie is set, to get the word out about "Skyscraper."</p><p>But that was not the only play The Rock had this time around.</p><p>Along with his tireless promotion, the movie also had a rare summer release in China for an American-produced project. This time of year <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-rocks-new-movie-is-getting-a-rare-summer-release-in-china-2018-6">Beijing often puts a blackout</a> on any title that is not a domestic release, but "Skyscraper" slipped in thanks to it being co-financed by Legendary Entertainment, which is owned by the Chinese conglomerate Wanda.</p><p>That meant in a time of year when the fastest-growing movie market typically doesn't get huge American stars on the big screen, suddenly The Rock was front and center.&#xa0;</p><h2>A movie designed to do well in China</h2><p>Another thing working in the favor of "Skyscraper" was that, from the beginning, it was made for the China market.</p><p>Director Rawson Marshall Thurber told Business Insider that even before he pitched the idea of the movie to Johnson, he wanted it to be set in Hong Kong. That was mainly because it's one of the few places that could believably house the tallest skyscraper in the world.</p><p>However, Thurber was also aware of that region's appetite for cinema.</p><p>"The Middle Kingdom is massive and only growing so it's certainly not by accident that we set the film in Hong Kong," Thurber said.</p><p>The director also made sure to cast a recognizable actor to Chinese audiences playing across from Johnson. Veteran Asian star <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1977856/?ref_=tt_cl_t3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chin Han</a> played the role of the man behind the creation of the skyscraper in the movie, and by the end he's fighting alongside Johnson against the bad guys who have taken it over.</p><p>"I wanted to make a movie that felt authentic to a place, that felt authentic to Hong Kong, that the Chinese people would embrace," Thurber said.</p><p>With "Skyscraper" now at over $179 million worldwide gross, it's no longer a doom-and-gloom scenario when it comes to Johnson's ability to carry a movie on his own. But you've certainly seen the movie before.</p><p>Taking its inspiration from movies like "Die Hard," "The Towering Inferno," and "The Fugitive," this Johnson blockbuster, directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber ("Central Intelligence"), has our hero playing a man who will stop at nothing to save his family from a burning building.</p><p>Johnson is former FBI agent Will Sawyer who now assesses security for skyscrapers. His latest job is looking over the tallest building in the world, The Pearl, in Hong Kong. Though the building's lower floor commercial spaces have been open for some time, Will and his family are the first people ever to live in the residence part of the towering skyscraper while Will does his assessment. The residence is located in the upper levels of this 240-floor structure.</p><p>Right out of the gate the movie shows us that Will is going to be a more mellow character than we are used to Johnson playing. He's sporting some gray in his beard and has a professional look with a dress shirt and slacks (that's right, no khakis or showing off his massive physique). Oh, and did we mention that Will is also an amputee? "Skyscraper" takes place 10 years after his leg was blown off following a raid on a house in which the suspect detonated a bomb in front of Will and his team. Will has since become a dedicated family man with two children and his wife, Sarah (Neve Campbell), who was his nurse the night he was brought to the hospital after the explosion.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The Pearl is owned and designed by billionaire Zhao Long Ji (Chin Han from "The Dark Knight") and he's got a few enemies: namely a terrorist group who wants to take control of The Pearl. And you guessed it, Will is the only one who can stop them.<p>But director Thurber, who also has the lone screenwriting credit, humanizes the story. He makes it more about Will's drive to save his family first. It just so happens he also has to kill the bad guys to do it. Will racing to save his family after the terrorists set The Pearl on fire makes for a thrilling movie to catch on a summer evening.</p><p>Is the movie completely unrealistic and full of cliches and head-scratching plot points? Of course. But like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rampage-is-dumb-but-the-rock-makes-it-watchable-2018-4">"Rampage" earlier this year</a>, you're paying your hard-earned money to see The Rock do some crazy stuff, and you won't be disappointed.</p><p>He's one of the few actors these days that can get mass audiences to come to the movie just because he's on the poster. And "Skyscraper" is going to be the ultimate test of his popularity because there's no seasoned franchises ("Fast and the Furious") or IPs ("Rampage," "Jumanji") for him to stand on. This one is 100% The Rock and he will rise or fall at the box office because of himself.</p><p>For me, Johnson is as thrilling in this as anything he's done. It's not his most entertaining work, but the cliffhanger thriller matched with his ability to keep you glued to the screen is perfectly done.</p><p>In this movie, he's hanging off a building with just duct tape keeping him from falling, he's jumping off a crane into the building (you may have seen him do that in the movie's poster), and he shows off the ultimate example of dad strength when he holds detached wires in place so his family can get across a wobbly bridge. His prosthetic leg helps him out a few times, too.</p><p>"Skyscraper" certainly has a more serious tone than most of what Johnson and Thurber do, which might throw some audiences off.
