<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1754577" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitch">Twitch</keyword> <keyword id="11640646" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="emotes">emotes</keyword> are small emoji-like icons that you can use in any Twitch streamer's chat room.</li><li>Twitch streamers with enough viewers can upload their own custom emotes for subscribers to use.</li><li>If you download the third-party extension BetterTTV, you can access dozens of new Twitch emotes for free.</li></ul><p>To the untrained eye, reading a Twitch chat can feel like interpreting hieroglyphic code. That's because Twitch chats are packed with the <keyword id="572624" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Streaming">streaming</keyword> social media site's popular "emotes."</p><p>Fortunately, we're here to help get you up to speed on Twitch emotes: Which ones are the most popular and what they mean, where to click and what to type to send emotes in Twitch chat, and how you can create your own signature emotes.</p><h2>Twitch emotes, explained</h2><p>Twitch emotes are tiny pictures that, just like <keyword id="859539" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="emoji">emoji</keyword>, each have their own meaning and connotation. And although some have an obvious use, most of them are pretty obscure. You can send an emote on Twitch to quickly convey to a streamer and fellow chatters your emotional reaction or opinion; whatever your mood, there's probably a suitable emote.</p><p>A few dozen emotes are available to everyone on the site; these are called "global" emotes. Once a channel gains a certain amount of subscribers, they gain the ability to add their own exclusive emotes that only subscribers can use.</p><p>Some emotes are only available to users who have Amazon Prime or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-cheer-on-twitch" target="_blank" rel="noopener">donate "bits,"</a> and others require you to install an extension called BetterTTV (which we'll discuss below).</p><div type="image" title="xQc's Twitch channel, with dozens of emotes in the chat box." height="1800" width="2880" msid="84411475" hostid="261"></div><h3>Using emotes</h3><p>To send an emote, simply type the name of the emote. Just click one to add it to your chat message.</p><h2><strong>A selection of the most popular Twitch emotes</strong></h2><ul><li><strong>Kappa:</strong> A classic emote, Kappa is a smirking face in grayscale that signals sarcasm.</li><li><strong>LUL:</strong> The laughing face is Twitch's take on "LOL."</li><li><strong>Jebaited:</strong> This bemused face is sent to signal that the streamer's been tricked or "baited."</li><li><strong>PogChamp:</strong> Possibly the most popular emote on the site (<a href="https://www.polygon.com/2021/2/12/22280777/twitch-pogchamp-vote-results-lizard-meme-komodohype" target="_blank" rel="noopener">and one of the most controversial</a>), you'll send this happy lizard when something awesome or exciting happens.</li></ul><div type="image" title="A selection of Twitch emotes: Kappa, LUL, Jebaited, and PogChamp." height="614" width="800" msid="84411483" hostid="261"></div><p>However, some of the most popular emotes require you use to use a browser extension called Better TwitchTV, or just BetterTTV for short.</p><h2>How to get more Twitch emotes with BetterTTV</h2><p>To use BetterTTV and get access to more Twitch emotes, you need to download the BetterTTV extension for your web browser, <a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/betterttv/ajopnjidmegmdimjlfnijceegpefgped?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chrome</a>, <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/betterttv/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Firefox</a>, or <a href="https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/detail/betterttv/icllegkipkooaicfmdfaloehobmglglb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Edge</a>.</p><p>Once you've downloaded it:</p><p><strong>1.</strong> Head to any Twitch chat and select the "Chat Settings" gear icon in the bottom-right corner, by the stream chat window.</p><p><strong>2.</strong> Select "BetterTTV Settings" from the Chat Settings menu.</p><div type="image" title="The Twitch chat settings menu, with BetterTTV settings highlighted." height="638" width="1276" msid="84411491" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>3.</strong> In the BetterTTV settings, make sure the "BetterTTV Emote Menu," "BetterTTV Emotes," and "BetterTTV GIF Emotes," and "FrankerFaceZ Emotes" are all set to "On."</p><div type="image" title="The BetterTTV menu." height="1440" width="2880" msid="84411494" hostid="261"></div><p>You'll now be able to use new BetterTTV and FrankerFaceZ "Global" emotes on every channel. Every Twitch streamer can also add up to 15 "Channel" emotes that anyone with BetterTTV can use in their chat.</p><h2>How to make your own Twitch emotes</h2><p>Along with global and BetterTTV emotes, every Twitch channel can submit their own custom emotes for subscribers to use. They're one of the unique ways that viewers can show their love for the channel.</p><p>However, to upload custom emotes, your Twitch channel needs to reach "partner" or "affiliate" status. Once there, you can take advantage of the tools provided in the Twitch Creator Dashboard to upload unique emotes.</p><ul><li>Twitch affiliates can have one emote for all subscribers, and two emotes each for $9.99 and $24.99 tier subscribers.</li><li>Twitch partners start with six emote slots, but that number can increase up to 60 as they earn more subscribers. To use <a href="https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/subscriber-emote-guide?language=en_US" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitch's auto-resize feature,</a> your file will need to be a square image between 112x112 and 4096x4096 pixels, and be a maximum of 1MB in size. How to crop a video on your Mac computer using iMovie

<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5952e929d084cc28008b5fa8-2400/cloudflare-84.jpg" alt="CloudFlare founders" /><p class="source"><span>CloudFlare</span></p><p class="caption">Cloudflare's head of user experience, Michelle Zatlyn, and CEO Matthew Prince.</p>Cloudflare, the Google-backed startup that protects websites from cyber attacks and speeds up website performance, wants to give app developers a way to reach its customers.<p>And it's launching a $100 million fund to jumpstart the effort.<br /><br />On Tuesday, the company <span>opened up its network to third-party developers with the launch of the Cloudflare Apps Platform.</span></p><p>The 6 million users on the Cloudflare network will soon be able to add a diverse array of widgets and tools to their webpages without diving into anything technical. The platform launched with a total of 50 apps, including new additions from Twitter, Pinterest, Zendesk and VigLink. </p><p>"What we realized is that not every good idea is going to come from a full-time employee at Cloudflare," said Matthew Prince, CEO at Cloudflare. "From our perspective, it adds additional rich features to our network, which makes our network more rich to our customers."<br /><br />While the meat of the platform came out of Cloudflare's December acquisition of Eager, a user-friendly tool that adds plugins to websites, it's all part of a greater vision that Prince has for Cloudflare. Prince said he can imagine a future in which Cloudflare's apps are as disruptive as Java or Apple, creating a new generation of applications that run on networks instead of devices. </p><p>"On the network-where power is cheap and bountiful," Prince said.<br /><br /></p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5952e9b6d084cca4008b5f6c-1600/gettyimages-606021900.jpg" alt="apple iphone 7" /><p class="source"><span>Sean Gallup/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince thinks networks may soon reinvent the way devices store applications.</p>Despite this vision, Prince said that Cloudflare isn't in competition with the App Store or Google Play-popular apps like Uber and Yelp pass through the Cloudflare network as it stands.<br /><br />Instead, the Cloudflare Apps Platform is really a way for developers to reach large audiences by creating new web tools for existing websites. Many of these will look like the classic in house tools that Cloudflare is known for, such as an image optimization tool that automatically resizes images to fit different devices; or a network optimization application that keeps things speedy.<p>The newly added Pinterest app, for example, allows users to right click on any given image on a website and save it to a Pinterest board. Meet Pixelmator, Apple's Pick For Best iPad App Of The Year

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5708198a52bcd023008bbafe-1006-754/woman-on-smartphone-texting.jpg" alt="woman on smartphone texting" data-mce-source="Michael Dodge/Stringer/Getty Images" /><p class="source"><span>Michael Dodge/Stringer/Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Google wants to help small businesses make their websites work better on mobile.</p><p>The company is rolling out a new diagnostic tool to help them figure out how to make their sites faster and easier to use on smartphones, Google's managing director of small-to-medium business sales for the Americas, Yong Su, tells Business Insider.</p><p>The tool, called Test My Site with Google, launches in May, and will look pretty similar to <a href="https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/">other free tests that the company offers</a>. But Su says that the team built this one specifically for small business site owners who might not be very tech savvy.</p><p>Small businesses will just enter their website URL to get a short diagnostic check. Google will then tell them specific reasons why their site isn't mobile friendly and custom tips on how to improve. For example, if a business's website is slow, Google will share tips for how to improve speed, as well as data that shows that why fixing the problem is important. Su cites a study that says that increase of one second in load time leads to an 11% decrease in page views, a 7% decrease in conversions, and a 16% decrease in satisfaction.</p><h2>Mobilegeddon fallout</h2><p>This news comes almost exactly one year after Google released a series of updates that started ranking mobile-friendly websites higher in search results. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-mobilegeddon-2015-4">Insiders called that first push "Mobilegeddon"</a> because of the toll it would take on businesses - particularly small businesses - that didn't make their sites easier to use on smartphones (through techniques like using large text, resizing pages, having well-spaced links, etc).</p><p>Google reasoned that because more than half of its searches come from mobile, it wanted to make sure that consumers had the best experience possible when they clicked on a mobile link.</p><p>But the change caused traffic to non-mobile-friendly websites to <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2015/07/15/googles-mobilegeddon-was-a-big-deal-after-all/">plunge 12% and smaller companies were hit the hardest</a>, according to an Adobe study in July 2015. In September, only 24.4% of small businesses had a mobile-optimized site, <a href="http://www.emarketer.com/Article/SMBs-More-Mobile/1013010">according to research from RBC Capital.</a></p><p>Sites that lost their organic traffic often made up for it by buying more mobile-search ads, according to Adobe's study.</p><p>That might sound like it would be good for Google, but there's one hitch: If businesses are buying mobile ads but their mobile sites still suck, then people likely won't stay on them or buy anything, so the business ultimately might decide that buying more mobile ads doesn't make sense.</p><p>"We want to make sure that Google is doing our part to help advertisers make the most of it," Su says.</p><p>He explained that when it helped about a dozen of its small business advertisers improve their mobile experience, it caused twice as many "conversions" (meaning a purchase, sign-up, registration, or other action that would count as a success for that business).</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/570825d29105844d018bba86-1025-769/ysk_hs1.jpg" alt="Yong Su" data-mce-source="Google" /><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p><p class="caption">Google's managing director of small-to-medium business sales for the Americas, Yong Su</p></div><p></p></div></div>Overall, Google says that it found an influx of 13% more mobile-friendly sites in total search results since its updates last spring (though it has no data on small business sites specifically).</p><p>News of Google's new tool for small businesses comes right before Facebook's developers conference next week, when the social network is expected to announce <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2016/04/07/facebook-chatbots/">new tools for businesses to work with its messaging platform.</a></p><p>Over the last year, Facebook's refrain has been that small businesses don't necessarily need their own websites because <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-pages-revamp-2015-9">they can use Facebook's Pages feature as their main web presence</a>. Instead of building a website or dedicated mobile app, companies can put all their information on Facebook for free, it says.</p><p>As you'd expect, Su doesn't believe that just having a Facebook Page is enough.</p><p>"We feel that it's important for small businesses to have a presence that reflects the true nature of the business, with full flexibility and customization, and however they want to program it themselves for the end user," he says when asked about Facebook's stance.</p><p>"We don't think it's an either/or. Small businesses should take advantage of lots of different ways to represent themselves on the web so they can be found. We still think that having a mobile website - a full destination site where they have control, flexibility, and lots of features - is an important experience that small businesses should provide for the end users."</p><p>Su admits that often "small businesses aren't well equipped to make sure that consumers have a good experience," so Google will also recommend website building partners like Wix and Weebly that can help with mobile site creation if they don't have their own tools. One year after 'Mobilegeddon,' Google puts its focus on small businesses

<p>Talks between Yahoo and Imgur began this autumn, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/imgur-and-yahoo-acquisition-talks-2013-12#ixzz2nAhs9YIS">according to a source talking to Business Insider</a>, but this would be just the latest statement acquisition by Yahoo's chief executive Marissa Mayer.</p>
<p>Since leaving Google in 2012, Mayer has bought dozens of popular web startups, including paying $1.1bn for blogging site Tumblr and £18m for news app Summly.</p>
<p>With more than 100 million users, and generating money through ads and image-hosting services for companies as well as recently tested sponsored images, Imgur would be a significant addition to Yahoo's stable of consumer services.</p>
<h2>What is Imgur?</h2>
<p>Imgur is an image hosting and sharing site, favoured by users of social media and social news sites including Reddit, Twitter and Digg because of its ease of use and flexibility.</p>
<p>It hosts images for free in various formats, including animated Gif files, supported by advertising, with paid-for professional accounts available.</p>
<p>Those images are kept online for free, only deleted if the image is not accessed at least once during any six-month period.</p>
<p>Users of the site can post comments, use tools to create new images and then share those images with both Imgur users and the wider internet.</p>
<h2>It's 'imager'</h2>
<p>Despite being written as "Imgur", the site's name is actually pronounced "imager", which makes sense given it is an image upload, sharing and hosting site. But it seems that almost no one realises that.</p>
<h2>Born in February 2009 as a 'gift to Reddit'</h2>
<p>Imgur was conceived as a side project for "an image-hosting service that doesn't suck" by Alan Schaaf, then a computer science student at Ohio University, who was fed up with the slow, laborious and limited image-hosting solutions available at the time.</p>
<p>"I got fed up with all the other image hosts out there so I made my own. It doesn't force you to compress your images, and it has neat things like crop, resize, rotate, and compression from 10-100. It's my gift to you. Let's not see anymore imageshack/photobucket around here ;)", said Schaaf in a posting on social news site Reddit at the time.</p>
<h2>From thousands to millions in months</h2>
<p>Imgur became wildly popular in a very short space of time, going from thousands of visits a day to millions within five months, mainly fuelled by its adoption by social news sites Reddit and Digg.</p>
<h2>Donations didn't cut it</h2>
<p>The rapid expansion meant the donation-funded model Schaaf initially set out with was thrown out the window within three months of launching, instead relying on advertising and merchandising to fund server and running costs.</p>
<h2>San Francisco-based</h2>
<p>In three short years, Imgur had started to surpass all image hosting rivals, and decided to step operations up a notch by moving the startup company to San Francisco to expand and acquire talent, now operating with a small staff of around 10 employees.</p>
<h2>Powered by Amazon</h2>
<p>Having bounced around various web hosting services including Voxel, Imgur finally landed on Amazon's web services platform in 2011, its fifth hosting web hosting service in three years that provided the scale now required.</p>
<h2>Bigger and bigger</h2>
<p>And vast scale is certainly required. In 2012, 300m images were uploaded to Imgur, with 364bn image views and over 42PB data transferred over the internet. As of June 2013, Imgur had grown even bigger, with over 1m images uploaded daily, with 3.5bn monthly views from over 70 million visitors, and recently announced that it had crossed the 100 million user barrier, making Imgur bigger than Reddit.</p>
<h2>April Fools</h2>
<p>Known for its humorous spirit, Imgur has a history of playing April fools pranks, or activating funny features starting with the "Catification" released in 2011, which allowed users to instantly add cats to images uploaded to the Imgur site with a single click.</p>
<p>Another highlight was the announcement in 2013 that Imgur was implementing a feature where users could upload images using the traditional postal service to "appeal to a broad user base which includes film users, the computer illiterate, and those afraid of radiation from scanners," something the site eventually honoured, uploading images received via snail mail.</p>
<h2>What is the Imguraffe?</h2>
<p>The official mascot of Imgur is the Imguraffe - a giraffe with a top hat and monocle - which started life as an April Fools' Day joke called "the simple Imguraffe sharer" but was "too cute to give up" according to the Imgur staff and so was given a permanent position in 2012.</p>
<h2>Meme Generator</h2>
<p>The first content creation tool produced by Imgur, the "Meme Generator" was released in June 2013 fostering humorously captioned images, allowing users to apply custom text to a wide variety of images to poke fun at daily life and create new internet memes.</p>
<h2>Going mobile</h2>
<p>The Imgur image fun isn't limited to the desktop. Not only does Imgur have a solid mobile website, the site released Android and iPhone apps in 2013, which included the full functionality of the desktop site tailored for the modern smartphone.</p>

What Imgur Is And Why Yahoo Wants To Buy It

But it's doubtful the iPad Pro will produce a second renaissance for the tablet genre, <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/why-tablets-are-the-future-of-computing-1442203331">as The Wall Street Journal's Christopher Mims suggests</a>.<p>Given the iPad Pro's extra productivity features - a keyboard, a pressure-sensing stylus, and processors that make it more powerful than 80% of notebook computers shipped last year - Mims argues we've reached "a weird moment in computing history when every major desktop and mobile OS, with the notable exception of Mac OS, will be competing on devices with the same ultra tablet form factor."</p><p>It's true, computers in general keep getting thinner - and soon, it's not difficult to imagine lots of people&#xa0;owning computers as thin and&#xa0;light as tablets, or tablets as powerful as computers.</p><p>Mims believes tablets and laptops will soon be indistinguishable, since you can easily connect peripherals to help you do work on your tablet that's traditionally performed&#xa0;on a desktop or laptop computer.</p><p>The iPad Pro is aimed at creative and working professionals, since it has the mobility&#xa0;and flexibility of an iPad but the power of a desktop computer. But it might not appeal to the mainstream crowd just yet since it's not yet cheaper or better than a laptop in many ways, and it's far too big and heavy to be a one-handed device (it's the heaviest iPad since the first-generation iPad).</p><p>But even if the iPad Pro were cheaper, it still wouldn't be the future of computing.</p><p>Of course, there needn't be only one way to get to the "future of computing." And even though it's not cheap right now, lots of big tech companies like Facebook and Sony are spending billions of dollars making it more accurate and efficient.<p>We've seen the applications: The potential for AR and VR is practically limitless. You can play games, watch videos, but most importantly, create and do work using virtual elements that appear in your field of view, using the same intuitive gestures you're familiar with on smartphones and tablets. All of this has incredible potential for education, entertainment, and so much more.</p><p>Virtual and augmented reality does things normal computers - phones, tablets, laptops and desktops - can't do. You can take a field trip to another country, or another world, without leaving the classroom. You can sit courtside at a basketball game without paying thousands of dollars or traveling to a crowded arena. Doctors and patients can learn more about conditions of the human body. Soldiers&#xa0;can conceptualize and simulate better tools for flight, vehicles, and combat. Not so with AR and VR: Instead of owning devices for every screen&#xa0;size, you can immediately adjust the screen size of any images you're looking at through your head-mounted display, just by pinching and zooming. But with augmented and virtual reality, you won't even need any screens in your house except for the ones directly in front of your eyes. Apple may have revamped the iPad, but it's still not the future of computing

<p>Using lasers to regenerate and grow body parts sounds like <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> fiction, but researchers have just demonstrated that it might be a tranformative tool in medicine - or at least dentistry - in the future.</p>
<p>A Harvard-led team just successfully used low-powered lasers to activate stem cells and stimulate the growth of teeth in rats and human dental tissue in a lab. The results were <a href="http://stm.sciencemag.org/lookup/doi/10.1126/scitranslmed.3008234" target="_blank">published today</a> in the journal Science Translational Medicine.</p>
<p>Stem cells exist throughout the body, and they fascinate scientists because they have the ability to become different types of cells - which means <a href="http://stemcells.nih.gov/info/basics/pages/basics1.aspx" target="_blank">they have the potential to repair or replace</a> damaged or worn out tissue. Figuring out new ways to make them useful has long been a goal of medical researchers.</p>
<p>Using lasers to make stem cells do their work is particularly appealing, since it's a minimally invasive technique, only requiring light once the damaged area is exposed. Scientists have theorized in the past that this was possible, since lasers have been shown to stimulate growth for unknown reasons, but this is the first time that the process has been demonstrated and observed.</p>
<p>The ability to naturally regrow dental tissue could transform dentistry, making it possible to regrow teeth instead of replacing them with a substitute like porcelain. But even more amazingly, once it's better understood, <strong>this same technique could potentially be used to heal wounds and regenerate bone, skin, and muscle.</strong></p>
<p>The research is in its earliest stages and has not yet been tested on humans, so it's far too soon to say whether these futuristic techniques will ever make it to your local hospital. The treatment possibilities raised by these experiments, however, are exciting to contemplate.</p>
<h2>How it worked</h2>

<p>Since the 1960s, doctors have noticed that medical lasers could occasionally stimulate the growth of skin, hair, and other cells. But this is the first time, the researchers write, that the process has been analyzed and understood on a molecular level.</p>
<p>The first step for researchers was to drill holes in two rat molars, exposing the interior of the tooth underneath.</p>
<p>They exposed dentin, which is the harder-than-bone but softer-than-enamel tissue that teeth are mostly made of. Then, they lit up the dentin using a low-powered laser, trying to get the stem cells there to kick into action and start producing more dentin to replace the damaged area.</p>
<p>One molar received the laser treatment, the other did not.</p>
<p>Twelve weeks later, the researchers observed that the dentin in the molar that received treatment was growing again - the tooth was growing back. <span>(The results were the same when they did the experiment again in mice.)</span></p>
<p>The researchers then tested the same technique on various mammal cells under a microscope. Each time, the laser light caused certain oxygen-containing molecules to appear. Those molecules then caused stem cells to begin their conversion into cells producing dentin, tooth tissue. This showed researchers how lasers can cause tissue to regenerate, which they say had never been seen before.</p>
<p>When tested with human dental stem cells, the effects were similar. The lasers activated the stem cells, which can become many different types of cells, and specifically caused them to start forming dentin.</p>
<p>These three experiments were all focused on the same goal, which was to see if laser light would cause the stem cells in tissue (which had been inactive) to begin the process of generating new tissue. The rat molars showed that it was possible in a living example, while the mammal cells showed exactly how the lasers were working. Using human cells was a way of showing that what was done with rats has the potential to work the same way with human teeth, which the researchers say is the next step in their process.</p>
<h2>Why it's not ready for prime time yet</h2>

<p>One particular technical challenge of this experiment, according to researchers, was performing oral surgery on tiny rodent teeth. "This is one of those rare cases where it would be easier to do this work on a human," said David Mooney, a professor of bioengineering at Harvard, <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/emb_releases/2014-05/wifb-rul052714.php" target="_blank">in the press release</a>.</p>
<p>New rat teeth didn't develop perfectly. There was some extra and unnecessary buildup of tooth tissue, which frequently <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3075986/" target="_blank">occurs naturally but can potentially</a> lead to painful conditions that need medical attention, including a root canal. However, researchers expect that in humans it would be possible to better cover up areas not being treated, since human teeth are larger. They say that they could more accurately activate certain growth areas without causing widespread tissue formation, but the process has not yet been tested.</p>
<p>The researchers say that they are currently developing human trials for this technique. If those are successful, this could lead to testing laser treatments that regenerate bone, muscle, and other cells throughout the body.</p>
<p>"We are also excited about expanding these observations to other regenerative applications with other types of stem cells," said Praveen Arany, the study's lead author and an assistant clinical investigator at the National Institutes of Health, in the <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/emb_releases/2014-05/wifb-rul052714.php" target="_blank">news release</a>.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55357f86ecad043c17634cf2-1200-924/larry-page-151.jpg?maxX=600" border="0" alt="Larry Page" width="600"><p class="source"><span>Steve Jennings/Getty Images</span></p></img></div><p></p></div>On Tuesday, April 21, Google is making a major update to its mobile search algorithm that will change the order in which websites are ranked when users search for something from their phone.</p><p>The algorithm will start <a href="http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2014/11/helping-users-find-mobile-friendly-pages.html" target="_blank">favoring mobile-friendly websites</a> - ones with large text, easy-to-click links, and that resize to fit whatever screen they're viewed on - and ranking them higher in search. Websites that aren't mobile-friendly will get demoted. </p><p>This change could be apocalyptic for millions of websites, which could suddenly find that they've lost their coveted ranking, so it has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-mobilegeddon-2015-4">earned the nickname "Mobile-geddon.</a>"</p><p>Small businesses are generally seen at greater risk, because they have a higher likelihood of not knowing about the update, or not having the time or resources to make changes, Itai Sadan, CEO of <a href="http://landing.dudamobile.com/dudaone?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=D1_Brand_US&amp;gclid=CPnp07X2hcUCFc3m7Aod9CIA1A">website building company Duda</a>, told Business Insider.</p><p>When we asked small businesses and webmasters what they thought of the update and whether or not they were prepared, we got a flood of emails. Here's some of what we heard:</p><h3><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">I didn't know the change was coming </strong></h3><p><span style="color: #222222;">Jasdeep Narang owns <a href="http://metawarelabs.com/#page0">a web development agency called Metaware Labs</a>, but he had no idea this algorithm update was happening on Tuesday: "I just came to know about this after reading your article. After wasting a lot of time accomplishing nothing, I determined that the two goals are incompatible. </p><p>"Mobiles need a website address optimized for mobile traffic, and desktops need a site optimized for desktop traffic. Perhaps hiring an expensive website developer could solve my problem, except for the issue of locating the big bucks to pay the overworked developer. I'm about ready to throw in the towel on my 20-year business. It is the premier website address for the beef jerky industry with $3 billion in annual sales.  You would think it could do very well. But I just barely eke out a living that almost supports one person."</p><h3><strong style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;">I knew the change was coming, but still scrambled to update my website at the last second</strong></h3><p>Mitch Goldstone from <a href="http://scanmyphotos.com/">ScanMyPhotos</a> says that his company sicced its entire engineering team on the preparing for the update: "While in the works for several weeks, we had our entire IT team on this and just made the change <span data-term="goog_572424100">on Friday."</span><span data-term="goog_572424100"> </span></p><p><span data-term="goog_572424100"></span></p><p dir="ltr"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image"><a title_source="Google" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/553580d6ecad04a822634cf2-960/mobile-friendly_test.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/553580d6ecad04a822634cf2-757-659/mobile-friendly_test.png" border="0" alt="Mobile Friendly_Test" /></a><p class="source"><span>Google</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Amber Fehrenbacher, who works for <a href="https://www.suretybonds.com/?utm_expid=17081007-93.n4vHNdNtSXSIsoju_4P0rQ.0">SuretyBonds.com</a> says that her team dropped everything to update its site - after having learned firsthand several years ago how seriously getting dropped from Google's search results can hurt business:</p><p dir="ltr">"My small 5-person team at SuretyBonds.com has been working relentlessly for the last 3 months to get our 1800+ page hand-coded static site to a responsive mobile-friendly format. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Somehow, by abandoning all other projects and focusing solely on re-coding our site in-house collectively, we managed to take our </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">mobile</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> errors count in Webmaster Tools from 258 in February to just 27 (the 27 mostly being issues we meant to not immediately address for internal purposes, importance, etc.)</span></p><p><span data-term="goog_572424100"></span></p><p dir="ltr">"We offer the largest collection of dedicated information on surety online and depend solely on search results from Google and Bing for driving business. We also were hit severely by the Penguin &amp; Panda updates over 2 years ago so we learned our lesson to say the least."</p><p><span data-term="goog_572424100">Marketer <a href="http://www.tricia.me/about/">Tricia Meyer</a> runs a few different websites. Some are ready for Google's update, some aren't: </span></p><p><span data-term="goog_572424100">"I am a small business with many sites but only one programmer. Our experience was to start first on the sites that mobile readiness impacted the CUSTOMER the most first and then make our way through the rest. As a result, we did get our biggest site switched months ago without threat from Google (<a href="http://www.sunshinerewards.com/">www.sunshinerewards.com</a>). Some of our smaller sites were switched just in the last week, and some of our sites won't make the switch at all.</span></p><p>"Our custom coded site took months of development but our WordPress sites were easier to change by changing the theme on the site or adding a simple plugin. We're anxious to see what happens now that the changes are supposed to be made."</p><h3><strong style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;">I didn't know the change was coming, but I'm prepared and excited </strong></h3><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Ed Baker, who runs <a href="http://www.redcarpetentrances.com/">RedCarpetEntrances.com</a>, which rents red carpets and other services for events, and <a href="http://chromawall.com/">ChromaWall.com</a>, which sells greenscreens, says that mobile is already driving 37.59% of his sites' traffic: </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"I saw the writing on the wall, but honestly, I didn't formally know this Google algorithm change was coming. I'm so excited about it now - knowing it is hours away. It will only pay-off for us! </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We have burned things to the ground and s</span>tarted over more than once (to get it right). This push for mobile-friendly sites is super exciting because we have been working on that. She hadn't heard about the algorithm change until reading about it on Business Insider, but looks forward to seeing how it affects her Google ranking:</p><p>"I run my company's website. As a small business owner, I was actually HAPPY to hear about Google's algorithm change. <span>Since I've worked in media and communications for ten years, I knew the importance of having a mobile-friendly site from the get-go. Therefore, when I hired a web developer to set up my website, I specifically requested she use a mobile-friendly/dynamic WordPress theme. With these changes launching tomorrow, Google may actually INCREASE my website's rankings, giving me an advantage over other businesses that were not as mobile savvy.
