But young guns like Kamath brothers of Zerodha too are charting their own path by bringing in personal wealth and new causes like climate and sustainability, as per EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023. Nadar retained his title as the most generous billionaire in India. He and Premji are only two billionaires who donated over ₹1,000 crore in FY23. Most of Nadar’s philanthropic endeavours, who gave away ₹5.6 crore per day, are centred around arts and culture. In fact, Nadar’s generosity is more than that of eight of his counterparts put together in the top 10 list, that includes India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani. Premji is India’s second most generous man and his contributions went by 267% as compared to last year. “This is attributed to a significant 400% rise in dividend payouts by Wipro in FY23. An innovative strategy employed by Premji enables the trusts to benefit monetarily from the shares, while Premji retains the voting rights,” says Hurun. India’s richest man’s philanthropic outgo falls Mukesh Ambani is the third more generous man in India as he donated ₹376 crore in 2023, but his outgo fell by 8% as compared to last year. They cumulatively donated ₹8,445 crore – up 59% compared to last year, and 200% compared to three years back. “Wealth creation is important for economic development, while philanthropy is equally important for economic prosperity. This year is a record year for big philanthropy. Given India's potential for wealth creation and assuming a continued commitment to philanthropy by billionaires, I anticipate these figures to potentially double over the next five years,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and chief researcher, Hurun India. But it has surprises too. Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath and Nikhil Kamath donated over ₹110 crore in their personal capacity with most of these funds going towards climate and sustainability. At 44 and 37 respectively, they’re also one of the youngest in the list. Manipal’s Ranjan Pai who is 50 years old donated 92 crore, towards education. The average age of India’s most generous philanthropists remains 60. Pai’s allocation went up 512% in the last one year. The other notable names amongst who donated their personal wealth are — A M Naik of L&amp;T who donated ₹150 crore; Sushmita and <keyword id="56651" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="subroto-bagchi" source="Orion">Subroto Bagchi</keyword> of Mindtree and Infosys’ Kris Gopalakrishnan and family. M A Yusuf Ali of Lulu Group also donated more in their personal capacity, and his allocation went up by 350% in FY23. “Cumulative personal donations have increased by 60% to reach ₹4,958 crore, constituting 70% of the total donations in the list. I am incredibly enthusiastic about the surge in personal philanthropy in India,” Junaid. In general, companies are also spending more as a part of corporate social responsibility (CSR). CSR spending of BSE 200 companies has been growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15% in the last nine years. Their cumulative CSR spend grew from ₹5,561 crore FY15 to ₹12,271 crore in FY23. “Government, civil society, and the corporate are the three distinct pillars sustaining the nation-building process. CSR is moving away from cheque book charity donations to a more long-term strategic engagement,” Hurun says.

As much as 12.5% of healthcare wealth globally comes from India, and vaccine king Cyrus Poonawalla of Serum Institute is the richest healthcare billionaire in the world. With Poonawalla and Dilip Shanghvi of Sun Pharmaceutical, the top 10 richest Indians list has two entrants from the healthcare sector. Ranking at 46 globally, Poonawalla of the unlisted empire, is the only billionaire in the top 10 richest Indians whose wealth went up by 4% to $27 billion. Shanghvi, on the other hand, lost 6% wealth in the last one year to end at $17 billion, and is ranked 98 globally. After healthcare, the sectors that created the most Indian dollar billionaires are consumer goods and chemicals, said the Hurun report, adding that financial services, healthcare and retail sectors minted the most global billionaires. “With 13 billionaires from the automobile and auto components sector, India has the second-largest concentration of automobile billionaires after China, which has 39 billionaires. Gautam Adani, Mukesh Ambani account for 59% of India’s top 10 billionaires’ wealth

The Defence Research &amp; Development Organisation (<keyword id="6355142" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="drdo" source="Orion">DRDO</keyword>) that was tasked with investigating into EV fire incidents by the <keyword id="2518729" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="union-road-transport" source="Orion">Union Road Transport</keyword> and Highways <keyword id="48413" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ministry" source="Orion">Ministry</keyword>, has found serious defects in the batteries, including designs of the battery packs and modules. According to sources in the know of the matter, these defects occur because the electric two-wheeler manufacturers like <keyword id="6077703" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="okinawa-autotech" source="Orion">Okinawa Autotech</keyword>, Pure EV, Jitendra Electric Vehicles, <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ola-electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> and <keyword id="12512499" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="boom-motors" source="Orion">Boom Motors</keyword> may have used "lower-grade materials to cut costs". The Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES) at the DRDO has submitted its fact-finding report to the Ministry, as first reported by Business Standard. According to the sources, the ministry has now summoned representatives of these EV manufacturers, asking them to submit an explanation on the DRDO report findings. Earlier this month, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), which comes under the <keyword id="2876140" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="union-consumer-affairs-ministry" source="Orion">Union Consumer Affairs Ministry</keyword>, sent notices to Pure EV and Boom Motors after their e-scooters exploded in April. The consumer watchdog is also examining more cases of e-scooter fires and will serve similar notices to other EV makers too. Pure EV and Boom Motors along with Ola Electric, Jitendra EV, and Okinawa Autotech, recalled faulty batches after the EV fire incidents were reported. The preliminary findings from the government-constituted probe committee on EV fires have already identified issues with battery cells or design in nearly all of the electric two-wheeler fire incidents in the country. The committee was constituted in the wake of EV fires and battery blasts in e-scooters. The experts found defects in battery cells as well as battery design in nearly all EV fires. The government is now working on new quality-centric guidelines for EVs that will be unveiled soon. At least 12 electric two-wheelers have exploded till now and several EV makers have recalled the faulty batches amid the growing pressure from the government. Update: Ola Electric has issued a statement saying it has not received any communication from the government in this matter. Unlike Kingfisher which closed down for good, Jet Airways is able to make a comeback after going bankrupt. It received an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the aviation regulator DGCA this month. Its new owners – UK-based Kalrock Capital Partners and UAE-based businessman Murari Lal Jalan, took over the airline in June 2021. As expected, the shares of Jet Airways surged 47% in a month, even as the broader markets have been reeling under the stress of growing inflation and rising interest rates. Jet will make a comeback into the sky after three years Jet however will fly into an aviation market that’s starkly different from how it left it. Far from the numero uno status it once occupied, Jet will be a newcomer with many promising newcomers like <keyword id="2467342" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vistara" source="Orion">Vistara</keyword>, a much stronger <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> which is acquired by Tata Sons. Jet will also have to fight off established players like IndiGo and SpiceJet which have taken over a substantial chunk of the market. Then there is a flurry of new players like True Air, <keyword id="6924336" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="star-air" source="Orion">Star Air</keyword> and <keyword id="60136" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="alliance-air" source="Orion">Alliance Air</keyword> which will be where Jet will be landing in its initial months. Unlike most new airlines, Jet will not be able to gain an entry with price cuts since the sector itself is in recovery mode after being badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. “Let’s say from Delhi to Bomday if they offer a ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 fare they will get market share but then they will never make money because they will later on increase prices. In an already price sensitive market segment, such measures will not help. Also, you are going to make it more difficult for the entire industry to come back to full recovery,” said Amrit Pandurangi, an aviation expert. Even the airlines which are performing well are hit by the rising cost of fuel. Aviation turbine fuel has doubled in the last one year, and since its costs account for 40% of operating costs - their margins are already under stress. Price points, hence, will not be the fighting turf this time around - once a popular strategy. “Anybody losing price to gain market share will end up making a lot more losses. Jet Airways stock soars 47% as it’s all set to fly, but fuel costs, new players indicate turbulence ahead

Indian billionaires are now worth $313 billion as opposed to $406 billion last year - that is 23% lower than what they held last year. “The COVID-19 pandemic was a double whammy for India’s billionaires, whose fortunes had already taken a hit from a slowing economy and falling consumer demand. As many as 953 new names were added to the list, which has increased by 122 people from last year.
