These are things that we don't have in the UK," Alex Kendall, Wayve's CEO, told Business Insider in an interview.Wayve's self-driving software is trained on the streets of London and other UK cities, known for being narrower and more crowded than the wide-open roads of California.<div type="image" title="Alex Kendall, CEO of Wayve" height="1875" width="2500" msid="115141699" hostid="261" sizebytes="463596"></div>But the startup, which recently raised over $1 billion from investors including Microsoft and Nvidia, is confident that it can make the leap.Wayve's fleet of Ford Mach-Es uses an end-to-end AI model that learns how to drive from real-world testing and simulations.That's a different approach from companies like Waymo, which rely on radar systems like lidar and high-precision mapping to limit their vehicles to operating in certain areas.Tesla has shunned lidar to rely exclusively on cameras and AI for its driver-assist systems, with Elon Musk previously <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-wrong-about-self-driving-strategy-needs-lidar-experts-2018-9">calling lidar a "crutch."</a> Tesla still spent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-lidar-technology-spending-luminar-elon-musk-comments-2024-5">at least $2 million on the technology</a> in the first quarter of 2024, though it is unclear what it was used for.Kendall said Wayve's approach allowed the company's software to generalize and adjust to new rules of the road in much the same way a human would.He told BI that Wayve was already seeing its vehicles learn to read four-way stop signs, weeks after it started testing a fleet of Ford Mach-Es with safety drivers in California."That level of behavior took us significantly more time and effort to learn in the UK. So what that shows to us is that we are generalizing," said Kendall.<h2 id="1fbecf35-04cd-448e-9e22-ef758d053a82">Big year for Wayve</h2>The expansion to the US caps a big year for Wayve, whose AI-first approach to autonomous vehicles has caught the eye of everyone from Meta chief AI scientist Yann LeCun to Bill Gates, who praised the company last year after taking one of Wayve's vehicles for a spin.The London-based startup has opened new offices in Vancouver and San Francisco, with Kendall saying the latter was partly to be closer to partners such as Microsoft and Nvidia.Wayve has also struck a partnership with Uber, which Kendall described as a three-way partnership that will see the two companies work with automakers to equip consumer vehicles with Wayve's driver-assist technology before gradually scaling up to fully autonomous robotaxis that will be deployed on Uber's platform.The Wayve CEO said gaining access to data from a network of millions of consumer vehicles across the globe would help Wayve's tech learn how to drive in different environments and cultures — a crucial step towards building fully autonomous vehicles."Ultimately we want this technology to be able to work anywhere around the world. That's going to require some exposure to data around the world," Kendall said.<h2 id="421bb542-72e6-4cff-b4c5-b4719abebeb4">Robotaxi wars</h2>After years of promises and false starts, autonomous vehicles seem to have taken a big step closer to breaking through to the mainstream.Alphabet-owned Waymo, which runs its robotaxi ride-hailing network in several US cities, recently said it serves<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-third-quarter-earnings-report-q3-2024-2024-10"> around 150,000 paid rides</a> a week, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alphabet-is-pouring-billions-into-waymos-self-driving-vehicles-2024-7">up from 50,000 in Q2</a>.Despite scrutiny <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-robotaxi-empire-scrutiny-fsd-full-self-driving-2024-10">over its Full-Self-Driving technology</a>, Tesla is also set to join the robotaxi wars after unveiling a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-elon-musk-fan-robotaxi-event-experiences-cybercab-2024-10">steering wheel-less "Cybercab"</a> at an event in California in October.Wayve has taken a different approach. Rather than building its own robotaxi fleet, the company plans to license its software to different automakers. Kendall said this would give Wayve a crucial advantage over firms like Waymo, which currently only operate in certain cities."I think the way that the way that autonomy will succeed at scale is through a system that has the intelligence to make decisions itself. And a geofenced approach fundamentally limits the utility of such a system," said Kendall.Ultimately, Kendall said that autonomous vehicles will only have their "ChatGPT moment" once they expand beyond specially modified robotaxis into everyday consumer vehicles."I would argue that getting this into consumer vehicles is what's going lead to that experience. He said several of his passengers faced flooding and destruction from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-milton-tampa-florida-desantis-clean-disaster-dangerous-2024-10">Hurricane Helene</a> two weeks prior and were scrambling to return to their routines. Many brought their pets with them. But after Milton passed, five drivers told BI that inaccessible roads, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-milton-evacuation-empty-gas-station-full-hotels-gridlock-traffic-2024-10">a lack of gas</a>, and a suspended ride-hailing app prevented them from helping people and earning valuable income."I drove for several hours right after the storm, and there was not a single gas station open anywhere in St. Petersburg," said Sergey, 54, who asked to use his first name for fear of professional repercussions.From his 12 rides, Sergey made $129 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-uber-lyft-drivers-make-per-ride-2023-10">before expenses</a> and received one tip. His home is without power, and driving is his only source of income. However, his car only has three miles of gas left, and each day without earnings is stressful, he said.Many of his rides over the last few days were headaches — one paid $5.36 for a 16-minute ride, which he said compares to the amount he'd expect to make for a similar journey, while another was elongated because of closed exits. He rejected a 113.5-mile ride from Clearwater to Orlando because the estimated payout was $84.31 with a bonus, far less than what's standard, he said. They added that service has been restored in these metro areas but remains suspended along the most heavily impacted barrier islands.Additionally, the spokesperson told Business Insider the company worked closely with state officials in Florida over the past few weeks to assess the situation posed by the hurricanes and partnered with the Florida Division of Emergency Management to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mypanhandle.com/weather/hurricane-helene/uber-offers-free-rides-to-shelters-for-floridians/">provide</a> some people with free transportation to shelters.Lyft did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment or questions regarding whether the app also suspended service during the storm.<h2 id="928e9756-39a3-4d0c-ae87-72a989030640">The evacuation process was "stressful"</h2>Drivers across the state recalled panicked passengers, fallen trees blocking roads, and lengthy gas station lines on October 10 and 11.Trent T., 50, drives independently for his own transportation company and for Uber and Lyft in South Florida. He said the tornadoes from Milton were "absolutely insane," and one of his clients' homes was destroyed. He asked to use partial anonymity for fear of professional repercussions.On October 8, Trent said he went to six gas stations before he could find one with inventory and fill up his tank. On the day of the storm, Trent drove passengers fleeing the Tampa Bay area to hotels, noticing that many stores were out of essentials like water. He said hotels in South Florida were mobbed, and he offered his house to anyone evacuating, though no one accepted.Blaine, an Uber driver based in the Tampa area, left his home after learning he was in an evacuation zone. Hotels quickly booked up across the state, but he said he secured a room in Ocala — about a two-hour drive from Tampa.However, there was a mixup with the hotel regarding the night he booked, and his reservation was void. He drove to a hotel in Savannah, Georgia, to seek shelter. The typical five-and-a-half-hour drive from Tampa took eight hours due to traffic, he said."That was stressful," the 57-year-old told BI.<h2 id="f85e7843-407a-45c1-933d-6fe7144dfaae">Drivers are eager to return to their ride-hailing gigs for necessary income</h2>Trent said he can go a few days without consistent rides and their fares but feels for drivers who live paycheck to paycheck. He said the storm could be disastrous for some drivers relying on tourism this time of year, which isn't as high as the city's peak season but still draws crowds looking for warm weather in the fall."If you were in Tampa for instance, and your rent is due this week, and now all of a sudden the storm is coming, you're five days without work," Trent said.It's why some drivers are looking to get back on the road as soon as possible.Yvonne, a part-time <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/driving-uber-lyft-women-drivers-how-make-money-gig-economy-2023-12">Uber and Lyft driver</a> in the Tampa Bay area, uses the extra income from driving to help support her two grandchildren. When the hurricane approached, she said she decided not to leave her home because it wasn't in an evacuation zone. However, the roof of her patio suffered significant damage and she lost power.She hasn't driven for Uber or Lyft since the hurricane hit. Yvonne said the roads aren't conducive to driving because many are flooded or scattered with trees or power lines. However, if the conditions change, she plans to return to her ride-hailing gig by this weekend to start earning money again.Charles P., 44, who drives part-time around Titusville — a city about 40 miles east of Orlando — said there wasn't too much damage on the roads, but he stopped driving for a few days to avoid potentially damaging his vehicle. He's seen a drop in demand and worries that tourism may decline. When he drove on Thursday, he said getting rides was very slow."I usually try to do a certain amount of money per day, but I'm probably down about half of what I normally do in three days," Charles said. While it's looking almost certain that the rate cuts Americans have been hoping for will finally happen, the question is how deep those cuts will go.So let's paint two scenarios, based on Friday's report, and both come down to one number.If the unemployment rate spikes again — as it did in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unemployment-rate-job-growth-july-labor-market-economic-data-2024-7">July's report </a>— the stock market could plunge, mirroring what happened after that unwelcome surprise. Unemployment above July's 4.3% could indicate that the jobs market is in even more dire straights and the chances of a coming recession could go higher. Additionally, the Fed could decide to cut rates even deeper than the expected 25-basis-point cut.On the other hand, if unemployment dips to 4.2% or below, it could be an indication that July's shockingly large increase was a blip and the job market isn't on a steep decline. The Fed could announce a 25-basis-point cut — the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">most likely scenario</a>, according to market predictions — which will mean that while the economy is cooling, it doesn't need drastic intervention on its way to a soft landing.The upcoming jobs report will clarify which of those two roads the Fed thinks we're on."It's really an opportunity for them to focus on the labor market and make sure that they are not inducing a more dramatic slowdown," Aaron Terrazas, chief economist at Glassdoor, told Business Insider.<h2 id="055a6f9d-c7c2-49a7-9322-c744c1fa5d7d">A golden path or Recessionland</h2>The Federal Reserve has held steady on interest rates for around a year — a decision called into question after July's disappointing jobs report.The Fed will likely be using the upcoming data to determine whether July's weak employment numbers persist and are indicative of a recession or if that was just a bump in the road and the economy can carry on into the coveted soft landing."We've got to be thinking about where will we need to be to pull off what I call the golden path, which is to get inflation down from these epic heights to something like our target without having a serious recession," Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee told BI. "And so far, we did that in 2023. This looks like a little bit of that magic dust. It has carried over into 2024, but there's weakening on the labor market side and so we've got to be attentive."Still, a 50-basis-point cut isn't guaranteed even if Friday's job gain and unemployment rate data are weak."I think the Fed will want to avoid being seen as excessively data-point dependent so that there would need to be a significant degree of weakness, very low payroll growth, or potentially a decline, and an increase in the unemployment rate for policymakers to suggest 50 basis points as the first rate cut," Gregory Daco, the chief economist of EY, told BI.While the size of a rate cut is in question, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interest-rate-cuts-are-coming-federal-reserve-jackson-hole-powell-2024-8">all but confirmed an interest-rate cut</a> in September during his keynote speech at Jackson Hole last month and indicated that the Fed will be closely watching the incoming jobs data, saying that "the inflation and labor-market data show an evolving situation. The upside risks to inflation have diminished. And the downside risks to employment have increased."July's unemployment rate of 4.3% was the highest since October 2021. A slight dip in this rate is expected for August, the forecast on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.investing.com/economic-calendar/unemployment-rate-300">Investing.com</a> showed, and job growth is expected to tick up.Terrazas said the question among economists right now is just how big of a cut the jobs report could prompt."If we do get a weak report, then I think 50 basis points is very clearly on the table," Terrazas said.David Kelly, J.P. Morgan Asset Management's chief global strategist, thinks the Fed will cut rates in September and December — both times being 25 basis point cuts."A payroll gain of less than 100,000 or a rise in the unemployment rate to 4.4% or above would make a 50 basis point cut in September likely," Kelly told BI in a statement about the upcoming labor market report.New data out Wednesday from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed job openings fell for the second straight month in July, and the number of hires increased slightly."If we continue to get labor market data like today's report, then the pace of cutting is likely to be quick," Nick Bunker, economic research director for North America at the Indeed Hiring Lab, said on Wednesday. "Hopefully, the labor market can level off and a more deliberate pace of cuts can be undertaken. But the underlying trends in the data suggest that might not be the reality."The Fed likely will also be considering the path of inflation as it decides how much to cut rates. Inflation has cooled and is now hovering just a little above the Fed's 2% target. New consumer price index data, an inflation measure, will be released before the FOMC meeting.Inflation and the labor market have both cooled, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-unemployment-interest-rates-economy-recession-soft-landing-2024-8">but the much-sought soft landing could be in trouble</a>. A recession isn't here either — even if some widely followed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sahm-rule-recession-unemployment-federal-reserve-interest-rates-cut-2024-8">recession indicators</a> have started to sound the alarm."I think the US economy is softening but not soft," Daco said.Goolsbee also emphasized the importance of looking at the data over time rather than a single point, and he noted that even if the Fed does start cutting rates this year, "the mission of the central bank is never done.""There is no declaring mission accomplished," he said. The "WHO South-East Asia Regional Status Report on <keyword id="20187029" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="road-safety" source="keywords">Road Safety</keyword>" was launched during "Safety 2024", the 15th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, 2024. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally, 30% of reported road traffic deaths involved users of powered two- and three-wheelers. Occupants of four-wheeled vehicles make up 25% of the deaths and pedestrians account for 21 %. Cyclists represent 5% of the deaths. The remaining 20% include occupants of large vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, and other or unknown user types. "In the WHO Southeast Asia Region, the share of reported road traffic deaths is 46% for users of powered two- and three-wheelers, 12 for occupants of four-wheeled vehicles, 17% for pedestrians, 3% for cyclists and 22% for others. In all these countries, vulnerable road users (pedestrians, motorised two-wheeler users and bicyclists) constitute 66% of the total reported road traffic deaths," the report said. "Drivers or riders of two and three-wheelers constitute the highest proportion among all road user categories in India (45.1%), Maldives (100 %), Myanmar (47%) and Thailand (51.4%)," it added. The WHO noted that no country in the South Asian region had achieved the target of reducing its estimated road traffic deaths by 50 %. However, considerable reduction in the WHO's estimated road traffic deaths occurred in the Maldives and Thailand, where estimated road traffic deaths decreased by 46.2% and 41.7 %, respectively. On the contrary, reported road traffic deaths in the region increased by 15 % in the 2010-2021 period. At the country level, no member state of the Southeast Asia Region with more than 10 million population has reported a decrease in road traffic deaths during this period. "However, it should be noted that the reported number of road traffic deaths in Thailand reduced by 22.9% between 2016 and 2021. The estimated road traffic deaths too increased in Bangladesh, India and Nepal during the period 2010-2021 by 23 %, 2% and 25%, respectively," the report said. Etienne Krug, director of the WHO's Department for Social Determinants of Health, said road traffic crashes were a major crisis of the 21st century. "...a large proportion of people who die in road crashes are those who cannot afford to buy a car. This is urgent time to take action. The report reveals that the crisis is huge but we need to understand and act with determination that prevention is possible and needs strict enforcement," he said. The three-day conference is being hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi; George Institute for Global Health in collaboration with the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS), National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) and co-sponsored by WHO. "To reduce inequities, we must acknowledge that injuries disproportionately impact vulnerable communities -- because we are far behind in addressing real problems with real solutions. Lived experience shows how policy shapes differential exposure, risk, and outcomes, underscoring the urgent need for change," said Jagnoor Jagnoor, head of injury division at George Institute for Global Health. During the conference, the international experts are uniting with a shared goal of "building a safer future for all: Equitable and sustainable strategies for injury and violence prevention". The conference will focus on five key themes -- improving coordination and collaboration among stakeholders, strengthening capacity for research and practice, integrating injury prevention with global health agendas such as sustainability and equity, empowering communities, and promoting informed policymaking.
