Mahindra to collaborate with Qualcomm tech in its all-new Scorpio-N vehicle.

Chip-maker <keyword id="104695" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="qualcomm" source="Orion">Qualcomm</keyword> and <keyword id="691847" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-cloud" source="Orion">Google Cloud</keyword> have announced a collaboration to create next-gen mobile AI models and neural network solutions.<br /><br />The Google Cloud's Vertex AI NAS Neural Architecture Search (NAS), first available on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/snapdragon-8-gen-1-chip-improved-performance-camera-capabilities-and-more/slidelist/88022289.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Snapdragon 8 Gen 1</a> mobile platform and then across <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/news/qualcomms-latest-snapdragon-8-gen-1-chipset-to-power-realme-gt-2-pro/articleshow/88022836.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Qualcomm</a> portfolio, will enable the companies to create and optimise AI models automatically rather than manually.<br /><br />Once combined with Qualcomm's AI engine, NAS will be used to accelerate neural network development and differentiation for Snapdragon mobile, ACPC, XR, the Snapdragon Ride automotive platform, and IoT initiatives, according to Qualcomm.<br /><br />"The ability to utilise Google's NAS technology to create and optimise new AI models in a condensed timeframe is a game changer for our business," said Ziad Asghar, vice president, product management, Qualcomm.<br /><br />"We are happy to be the first chipset company to work with Google Cloud on NAS and eager to roll out this technology to further our momentum in connecting the intelligent edge," he said in a statement.<br /><br />Google Cloud's Vertex AI NAS will give Qualcomm Technologies the ability to bring high accuracy AI with low latency to low-power devices such as IoT, medical imagery, automobile and mobile devices, whilst ensuring memory and energy efficiency.<br /><br />"With this collaboration, Qualcomm Technologies will now be able to build and optimise new AI models in weeks rather than months and we're thrilled at the impact this will have on people using Snapdragon-powered devices," said ," June Yang, vice president, Cloud AI and Industry Solutions, Google Cloud.<br /><br />During the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit, the company has unveiled the <keyword id="12635619" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="snapdragon-8-gen-1" source="Orion">Snapdragon 8 Gen 1</keyword> platform featuring improved camera capabilities, artificial intelligence (AI) applications, and security enhancements.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1: Qualcomm, Google Cloud partner to upgrade AI models in mobile platforms

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Kobby Dagan/Shutterstock</span></p><p class="caption">After months of turmoil, Qualcomm is trying to refocus its attention on growing its product lines.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Qualcomm makes the chips that power nearly every smartphone, but lately its name has been associated with a series of scandals - including a hostile take over attempt by its competitor Broadcom, which President Trump stopped with <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/presidential-order-regarding-proposed-takeover-qualcomm-incorporated-broadcom-limited/">a presidential order</a>. </strong></li><li><strong>Now the company has to prove to shareholders and the world that it can overcome its corporate challenges and focus on growing as a company.</strong></li><li><strong>In a conversation with Business Insider, Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon shared the company's plans to diversify its products away from just smartphones and mobile technologies.</strong></li><li><strong>Qualcomm plans to do this by doubling down on products that benefit from cellular technology, like automotive infotainment systems and virtual reality headsets.</strong></li></ul><p><a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/qcom-stock">Qualcomm</a> makes the processors that power almost every smartphone, but it thinks it can be so much more. Its ambitions to grow beyond its bread-and-butter mobile business, however, have hit several challenges along the way - some of them coming from the White House.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Qualcomm</span></p><p class="caption">Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon has a plan to grow Qualcomm.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It's been nearly 21 months since Qualcomm, the $85 billion San Diego-based semi-conductor company, <a href="https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2016/10/27/qualcomm-acquire-nxp">announced plans</a> to acquire its Dutch competitor NXP for $47 billion. In the meantime, the US entered <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-china-trade-war-tariffs-go-into-effect-soybeans-tech-2018-7?r=UK&amp;IR=T">a costly trade war</a> with China which has put Qualcomm's strategic acquisition in a non-stragegic position as a pawn in the game of global diplomacy. After getting the thumbs up from eight different global anti-trust regulators, the acquisition has stalled pending China's approval. </p><p>The company continued to face even bigger battles in 2018. It fended off a hostile take over by competitor Broadcom; faced an on-going patent infringement court battle with Apple; and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/qualcomm-starting-layoffs-after-failed-broadcom-acquisition-2018-4">laid off a chunk of its staff</a> in an effort to reduce its expenses by $1 billion.</p><p>Now, the company needs to prove to shareholders - and the world - that it can overcome all these hurdles, holdups, and hiccups. That's why it's doubling down on its product strategy, as it works to reestablish itself as a major player in the chip market, with or without NXP.</p><p>"It's been close to two years that we've been waiting the NXP acquisition, and a lot has happened in two years," Cristiano R. Amon, president of Qualcomm, told Business Insider. "We had built a diversified business already. NXP accelerates that strategy. It does not bring a new strategy, it just makes it bigger and faster."</p><h2>Mobile could shrink to half of Qualcomm's revenue</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Samsung</span></p><p class="caption">More than 80% of Qualcomm's product revenue comes from smartphone sales, but that could change if all goes according to plan.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Qualcomm made its name selling the semi-conductors that made smartphones possible. But its current product strategy is to go beyond mobile phones and expand its business in adjacent fields such as connected automotive, laptops with cellular internet connection, wifi networks, and virtual reality headsets.</p><p>"Think of us as everything wireless," said Amon, who described Qualcomm's focus as "high-performance, low-power computing." </p><p>Amon wants to see Qualcomm's revenues reach a point where half comes from mobile devices and half from other kinds of gadgetry. But it has a long ways to go. </p><p>Qualcomm brought in $16.5 billion in product revenue in its 2017 fiscal year. Of that, just $3 billion, or 18%, came from business segments other than mobile. Still, non-mobile revenues are fast growing; 2017 figures were up 25% from 2016 and 75% from 2015.</p><p>While Qualcomm continues to develop its smartphone processors, mobile growth has also slowed in recent quarters due to the saturation of 4G cellular technology. But Amon expects that things will pick up once 5G devices are released in the Android ecosystem in the first half of 2019.</p><p>By 2020, Amon expect 5G smartphones will be mainstream, which means good things for Qualcomm's bottom line, as manufacturers come back to the company for cutting-edge new wireless chipsets. </p><p>"As we expect users to get addicted to the speeds, to unlimited data rates," Amon said, "we expect that the industry could go back to growing double digit rates by 2020."</p><h2><strong>Virtual reality goggles are the next big use-case</strong></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Facebook</span></p><p class="caption"> Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor is in every new VR device, including the Oculus Go. </p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Qualcomm's next big market is virtual reality and augmented reality, which the company combines under the banner of "XR," or "extended reality. "</p><p>"Today every single VR device is Snapdragon based," Amon said. Indeed, Facebook's Oculus Go, Google's Daydream and the <span style="font-weight: 400;">HTC Vive Pro all run Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In May, Qualcomm announced a new XR chipset called the Snapdragon XR1. It includes everything you need to power a VR headset, including the WiFi antenna. But it doesn't have a cellular modem. At least, not yet.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In future versions of these chips, that could change. Amon </span>expects to see a boom in VR and AR once 5G is more widely available, and the headsets become less bulky and more elegant for users to carry around. </p><p>He thinks small chips that use less energy will allow these devices to eventually look like your everyday eyeglasses. People may find themselves wearing cellular-connected augmented reality glasses that give people everything from news alerts to info about how much gas is in the tank while driving a car, he says. </p><h2>Eventually, everything will be connected </h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>LG</span></p><p class="caption">The LG Watch Urbane is one of 80% of Android smartwatches that use Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips within.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Outside of the mobile universe, Qualcomm envisions a world of Internet of Things (IoT) devices that connect to the internet as quickly and reliably as a cellphone. </p><p>The move to 5G, combined with the push towards unlimited data, open up new doors for connected devices to have always-on internet connections the same way smartphones do. Already, Qualcomm has seen some success in the wearables market, where 80% of Android smartwatches use Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear chips, including the LG Watch Urbane. </p><p>Down the road, particularly if the NXP acquisition goes through, Amon said that Qualcomm could grow its presence in the industrial IoT space, powering automated machinery and other large devices. </p><p>"<span style="font-weight: 400;">5G will bring the capability to have mission critical services - you never had in wireless the ability to support industrial grade internet, and you can use this now within enterprises and manufacturing sites, and create a whole new industry for cellular beyond smartphones," Amon said.. </span></p><p>Two other growth areas for Qualcomm are networking, which is a unit that focuses on bringing high-quality WiFi connections to homes and offices, and connected laptops that are constantly on cellular networks just like smartphones.</p><p>Its first laptop processor was released in June 2017. A year later, 25 telecom operators around the world started providing connectivity to these chips, including T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&amp;T and Deutsche Telekom.</p><p>The latest edition of that chip, the <span style="font-weight: 400;">Snapdragon 850, <a href="https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2018/06/04/qualcomm-announces-snapdragon-850-mobile-compute-platform-windows-10-pcs">was announced</a> in June. This chip will make its debut in a Samsung-made Windows 10 machine, though details of that particular computer are still yet to be revealed. </span></p><h2>Connected cars are already a 'success story' </h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ethan Miller/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">In April, Qualcomm CEO Steve&#xa0;Mollenkopf revealed a $4 billion backlog in orders from automates and suppliers who intend to use Qualcomm chips.</p></div><p></p></div></div>One area of growth that Qualcomm already considers a success is its work with automotive partners. </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In April, CEO Steve <span>Mollenkopf revealed on an earnings call that </span>Qualcomm has a $4 billion backlog in orders from automakers and suppliers who have committed to using its processors in their designs. That's up $1 billion from January, when Qualcomm revealed $3 billion in back orders. </span></p><p>"This is the one that has been a pretty big success story," Amon said. "<span style="font-weight: 400;">We engage with of the top global 25 brands in the automotive market. We've engaged with over 15 now to design the dashboard and the infotainment. That has been a very successful new market entry."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Qualcomm's 15-year-old auto portfolio includes chips for telematics - tools like in-car emergency assistance or GPS tracking in case a car gets stolen. It also sells processors to connect cars to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But in the last four years, the company has increased its focus on car infotainment systems. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">As of January, infotainment sales accounted for $1 billion, or one-third, of the company's automotive backlog. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And if the NXP deal goes through, Qualcomm will gain an even a greater foothold in the space. Global cellular <keyword id="970768" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="internet-of-things" source="Orion">internet of things</keyword> (<keyword id="1967280" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iot" source="Orion">IoT</keyword>) module shipments grew 70 percent (on-year) in the third quarter this year and <keyword id="104695" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Qualcomm" source="Orion">Qualcomm</keyword> led the cellular <keyword id="12701968" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iot-chipset" source="Orion">IoT chipset</keyword> market with more than one-third share, a new report said on Thursday.<br /><br />In terms of overall revenue, the market crossed the $1.5-billion mark during the third quarter. China continued to dominate in terms of volume, followed by North America and Europe.<br /><br />5G was the fastest growing technology (more than 700 percent on-year) due to a lower base, according to data provided by Counterpoint Research's Global Cellular <keyword id="12702017" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iot-module" source="Orion">IoT Module</keyword>, Chipset and Application Tracker.<br /><br />"Chinese module players performed well during this quarter while some international players struggled. Quectel, Fibocom and China Mobile were the top three cellular IoT module players in China in terms of shipments. For the rest of the world, Quectel, Telit and Thales were the top three cellular IoT module players," said research analyst Soumen Mandal.<br /><br />Smart meter, POS (point of sale) and retail were the top three fastest-growing applications.<br /><br />The ongoing chip shortage had a negative impact on the automotive segment.<br /><br />"Qualcomm is leading in the global cellular IoT chipset market with more than one-third share. We had loved the Xperia Z2 and now we have been using the Z3 for about a week now, so let us find out if this is even better or not?<br />

It is Sony new device that will be pitted against the flagship device from all other smartphone makers. We had hoped that Sony will be packing in a 2K display for this one but sadly that is not the case so. Just like the Xperia Z2, the Xperia Z3 is also waterproof and dust proof.<br />

<strong>Why does it matter?</strong><br />

Sony has been trying hard to increase its market share and profitability in the smartphone space. The company has already indicated that it will focus on high-end devices to improve its bottom lines. The Xperia Z3 is going to be Sony front runner in this category and it needs to lead by example.<br />

<strong>Design</strong><br />

Aesthetically, the Sony Xperia Z3 remains very similar to its predecessor. It is available in four colors (white, black, copper and a "mysterious" silver-green), it keeps the angular Omnibalance design of Sony Xperia Z2. But we have no complaints in regards to the minimalistic and monolithic device. With an aluminium frame and glossy rear, Sony has decided to pop a nylon cap onto the corners of the phone in an attempt to keep these easily dented and chipped areas blemish free. The durable material (used in the automotive industry) will no doubt be fit for purpose, though it's arguable that they've now undermined the otherwise-seamless design from the outset here.<br />
In addition, the Sony Xperia Z3 weighs just 152g, which makes it full 11 grams lighter than the Xperia Z2 and at just 7.3mm it is also slimmer.<br />

<strong>Display </strong><br />
<br /> After spree of boring and dull displays, Sony managed to cracked the display puzzle with the Xperia Z2 and the same has been borrowed by Xperia Z3 as well. Crisp colors and contour, rich detailing and an astounding viewing experience, is what Xperia Z3 promises and very ably delivers. It may not match up to the class of Super AMOLED display of <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> but still, the difference is not really going to be bothersome. Viewing angles are good too and you won't find any issues with that.<br />

<strong>Performance </strong><br />
<br />
Xperia Z2 was a top notch performer with its fluid interface experience via the Xperia UI and a stable workhorse too. With Xperia Z3, the stake has gone to another level. It packs the quad-core Snapdragon 801 chipset along with 3 GB RAM and those numbers are well and truly packing the Z3 with a high-end experience. Be it, gaming, multi-tasking or any heavy loaded stuff, Xperia Z3 comes through unscathed without major heating issues and no lagging problems, whatsoever. If you compare the benchmark scores of Xperia Z2 and Z3, you’ll actually wonder, if the upgrade is really what an existing Xperia users will be look for. For some strange reasons, we got the Xperia Z2 delivering better graphics experience than Xperia Z3 but all that does change, when using the phones in real time.<br />

How can you actually improve a phone’s camera packing a mammoth 20.7 megapixel resolution? Well, with Xperia Z2 we observed, improvements were needed on the detailing and low-light capturing front and Sony comes back to us with Xperia Z3 that gets the issues sorted, to some extent. The company has upped the aperture quotient on the Z3 ,which helps in delivering higher detailed images with clarity and the low-light shooting has improved as well. But what we like the most, is the Xperia Z3’s ability to handle 4K-video shooting which is much better than what we experienced on the Xperia Z2 (constant heating and device freeze was a common pain).<br />

The flagship Xperia devices have been known for being a powerhorse, as well as, workhorse nature. And the same tradition continues with the Xperia Z3. You don’t really have to be moving around with a portable charger with Xperia Z3 that’s how confident we were, when we used the phone for a week. But, just to be sure about the credentials, we made the Z3 run through set of video playback and usage tests. With video playback, we got the phone up and running for more than 8 hours which in our experience translates to more than day’s life and we exactly got that during our usage tests.<br />

Otherwise, it makes better sense to go with the Xperia Z2, which after the launch of the new flagship is now available for Rs 39.999.<br />
