Dustin Snyder used to be one of those people. He worked a slew of jobs but wasn't satisfied with any of them."I worked in retail for quite a while," Snyder told Business Insider. "Then I ended up working in a call center for a big cellphone company." There, he climbed the ladder until he became a corporate account manager, supervising business projects for large clients.The office environment became tedious to Snyder. He disliked the formal dress code and the inability to unplug from work. He switched jobs, this time to an e-commerce startup. However, Snyder still wasn't satisfied with the work, which felt incredibly similar to his previous job. Snyder was taking his laptop on vacation, and his phone was constantly blown up with emails.That was until Snyder talked to a friend of a friend who happened to be an electrician. Snyder, now 43 years old, has been an electrician for the last six years, and he's never looked back."As a union electrician, my life is a million times better," he said. "Six years in, and I'm still learning all the time, making more than I did before, and often have fun at work."If you've experienced a similar situation and are contemplating making the white-to-blue-collar leap, Snyder shared the following advice and observations.<h2 id="98ab6d47-4fce-4126-8da5-a2373ef3591e">It's not hard to break in</h2>Snyder had no previous trade training before his career switch, but he didn't find the transition particularly difficult.He started with an entry-level position as a low-voltage installer to get some on-site training. After nine months, Snyder applied and was accepted for an apprenticeship, which combined classroom training with on-the-job experience. Snyder was an apprentice for three years, working and going to night classes once a week. After finishing his apprenticeship and receiving the proper certification, Snyder officially became a low-voltage electrician.The training doesn't break the bank, either. "You pay a little for the schooling, but you're also working while you're going to school, so basically you're learning and getting paid at the same time," Snyder said.A four-year college degree isn't necessary. "if someone came out of high school and went into being a commercial electrician, they could potentially be making $73 an hour at age 22 with zero debt," he added.Electricians are a fast-growing job category, so there's definitely no shortage of jobs. According to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/ooh/construction-and-extraction/electricians.htm">Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>, the profession is projected to grow 11% in the next decade — well above the 4% average growth for all occupations.<h2 id="74e2fe7e-c94a-44db-8d54-ead5687ff11f">There's more diversity in the trades than you'd expect</h2>"A lot of people might think it's all people with jacked-up trucks and camo hats and jackets, and it's not as many as you would think," Snyder said.His coworkers include people of different genders, sexual orientations, and ethnic backgrounds. While the majority of blue-collar jobs are held by men, the trades are indeed becoming more diverse. According to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dpeaflcio.org/factsheets/the-professional-and-technical-workforce-by-the-numbers">AFL-CIO</a>, the share of women in construction jobs increased by over 60% between 2013 and 2023, from 2.6% to 4.3%.There are also a lot of blue-collar jobs out there, and an electrician is just one of them. You could be a plumber, a machinist, a painter, an HVAC technician — the list goes on. Snyder works from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m."A start time between 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. is pretty much the norm for most trades," Snyder said.For electricians or construction workers, it's important to start before peak traffic hours and maximize daylight.On an average day, Snyder wakes up between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. He specializes in audiovisual equipment, so his day-to-day tasks may involve repairing or upgrading conference rooms in commercial buildings or college classrooms. After leaving work and running errands, Snyder's usually in bed by 7 p.m.The lifestyle can interfere with your social life. <ul class="summary-list"><li>I'm American but have been living in Germany with my family for over a decade. </li><li>Here grocery stores are closed on Sundays and close at midday on Saturdays. </li></ul>If you are planning a trip, a long-term visit or even a move to Germany, I have some advice for you. I'm American, but have been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-living-in-germany-struggles-with-naming-multilingual-kids-2024-6">living in Germany</a> with my family for over a decade. One thing you'll probably notice early on is that your <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-i-make-groceries-last-longer-remote-living-2023-1">trip to the grocery store</a> to stock up on supplies might look a little different than what you're used to in the United States. Here is why. <h2 id="2b63283a-5b37-462e-82b4-a8c3cd234b43">There are less brands and varieties of products</h2>Given that the United States is simply much bigger than Germany as a country, it stands to reason that German grocery stores have less of a selection when it comes to brands and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/surprising-things-moving-from-argentina-to-us-2022-1">varieties within products</a>. A great example is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/is-orange-juice-bad-for-you">orange juice</a>. At a typical US supermarket, you can find a range of highly specific types of orange juice, like "added calcium," "some pulp," or "heart-healthy with Omega-3's." Not so in Germany for the most part: you'll typically have a selection between a couple of brands, perhaps narrowed down by being with pulp or without pulp. Although larger grocery stores will offer a bigger variety, it generally won't be as vast as an American supermarket.Within Germany, brands are often somewhat regional as well. When you buy milk in Bavaria, the brand selection is likely to be exclusively <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-germans-flock-outdoor-beer-gardens-bavaria-2021-5">Bavarian companies</a>. And of course, some of it comes down to space. For instance, urban grocery stores in Germany simply don't have the physical capacity the way many American grocery shops do, allowing American shops to stock numerous brands and types of the same product.Speaking of space, given that many people do get around without a car in German cities, you'll also have to keep in mind that not every German grocery store will have a parking lot or easy street parking if you're in a major city like Frankfurt or Hamburg.<h2 id="46c2628b-4e24-49dd-8117-eb21c4325ab1">You have to bag your own stuff</h2>At most major American grocery stores, your groceries generally get bagged for you as you check out. When you shop in Germany, be prepared for a bit of a workout: the checkers scan the items rapidly while you are in charge of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/home/best-reusable-shopping-tote-bag">bagging them up yourself</a>, sometimes with a lengthy line of people behind you during busy times. It's almost an art form, as shoppers have to be quick and strategic to prevent their groceries from piling up before the next customers starts scanning. The only other effective strategy is to try to shop for groceries during more obscure times of day — or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stopped-ordering-grocery-delivery-shop-with-kids-save-money-2024-6">grocery delivery</a>.<h2 id="7cc39748-4d1f-44a4-96d3-ee9b880f69f7">There's a range of grocery store types, from health food shops to discount grocers</h2>Similar to the US, options in Germany are greater in larger urban areas than rural villages and towns. Most Germans do their grocery shopping at standard and discount grocery stores. In fact, some German discount grocery stores have achieved international success, so many Americans are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aldi-grocery-shopping-affordable-week-of-food-2024-1">familiar with Aldi</a> and Lidl in particular. There are "mega" markets more comparable to bigger American supermarkets as well, such as Hit, V-Markt and Kaufland.Organic and biodynamic groceries are very popular in Germany, so there are a number of organic grocery stores throughout the country, including some national chains. Certified organic products tend to be less expensive in Germany than in the US, although they still tend to have a higher price tag than non-organic products. Most cities and towns offer farmer's markets on a regular basis, where locals can get fresh produce, dairy and meat from nearby farms. Germany has a large Turkish community, and there are many Turkish grocers throughout the country. In urban centers you can also find other international grocery stores.A unique German element are some long standing traditional department store grocery sections or gourmet grocery shops that are legendary in certain cities. These stores have been around for generations and tend to be quite expensive and exclusive. Some famous examples are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.visitberlin.de/de/kadewe">Kadewe </a>in Berlin and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.feinkost-kaefer.de/schaenke">Kafer</a> in Munich.<h2 id="c301abac-294a-44ce-b903-958e938f841d">Opening times at German grocery stores may seem short in comparison to US stores</h2>Many Americans who visit Germany are surprised to find that German grocery stores have more limited opening times than they are used to. For starters, throughout the country, almost all grocery stores are completely closed on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.german-way.com/travel-and-tourism/germany-for-tourists/shopping-in-germany/shopping-hours-in-germany/">Sundays</a>. It's the same story on public holidays. If you're absolutely stranded, most major cities will still have a few grocery stores that operate on Sundays at places like the main train station or the airport, and gas stations sell a number of basic goods, but for the most part your options will be very limited or non-existent.For Americans who live in cities or towns where grocery stores are open till 10 p.m. or run 24 hours, don't expect to find that in Germany. Most German grocery stores close at 8 p.m., and small shops in rural areas close even earlier, such as 6 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Mark Cuban warned that Trump's planned tariffs would burden even the smallest business.</li><li>Sweeping duties on imports would mean costly, time-consuming compliance, the "Shark Tank" star said.</li></ul>Mark Cuban has warned that Trump's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariff-trade-tax-proposal-inflation-interest-rates-outlooks-predictions-2024-7">plan to impose sweeping tariffs on US imports</a> would burden even tiny businesses with expensive, arduous compliance."I think one major point the discussion of tariffs is missing is the time and cost to businesses, even the smallest single person company," the tech billionaire said in an X post on Monday."It's a lot of work. It's a lot of bureaucracy. It almost always required hiring a broker to deal with all of it. And of course there is the ongoing record keeping that each business is responsible for," he added.Cuban then listed the many steps involved in importing tariffed products according to Grok, the chatbot built by Elon Musk's xAI company.A typical business has to classify the product it's importing and figure out the correct tariff rate, calculate what it owes, file a customs entry, pay the required duty, follow other regulations, and keep detailed records, Grok told Cuban. It might have to consult with a customs broker or trade specialist to ensure it's compliant, it added.Business owners might also spend time rejigging their products and operations to pay lower rates, adjusting prices to offset the tariffs, assessing how the tariffs affect their company's competitiveness, and following trade news to prepare for any more changes, the chatbot said.<h2 id="6f771105-0f7c-43b5-aed1-e6e0f89f792f">Threatening tariffs</h2>Trump, the Republican nominee in November's presidential election, has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-tariffs-trade-war-inflation-income-tax-cuts-debt-2024-6">proposed slapping tariffs of 10%</a> on virtually all US imports, and duties as high as 60% on products brought in from rival powers like China.At a rally in Wisconsin on Saturday, he floated the idea of imposing 100% tariffs on countries that dump the dollar for other currencies as punishment for not doing business with the US.Trump has championed his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariff-income-tax-proposal-stagflation-yellen-summers-trade-war-2024-6">contentious tariffs</a> as a tool to strengthen America's position in global trade, and as a source of government revenue that could allow him to cut income taxes.Cuban, a "Shark Tank" investor and a minority owner of the Dallas Mavericks, became a billionaire by founding an internet-radio startup named Broadcast.com in 1995 then <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/how-mark-cuban-saved-billions-yahoo-windfall-dot-com-crash-2020-6">selling it</a> four years later to Yahoo for nearly $6 billion.He was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/mark-cuban-calls-us-scrap-zero-sense-tariffs-chinese-goods-2020-5">critical</a> of Trump's tariffs on China during his time in the White House and has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-cuban-kamala-harris-donald-trump-economic-plans-2024-8">slammed</a> the Republican candidate's threat of more of the same. However, he emphasized that this is a costly, yearslong process, and some of the materials and components that manufacturers need may only be available overseas."Tariffs are the worst possible incentive for all but a few products," he said, adding that they "almost always" cost consumers more money.<h2 id="7c30b1bc-1795-4df5-afb0-8ae9c0ce8555">Tariff pain and small business woe</h2><div type="image" title="Paul Krugman" height="2610" width="3915" msid="113230136" hostid="261" sizebytes="552368"></div>Nobel laureate Paul Krugman has also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariff-trade-policy-barrier-income-tax-rate-hikes-krugman-2024-7">panned Trump's plans</a>. In a July column, the economist cited research showing that tariffs only benefit the wealthiest Americans, and 80% of US consumers lose from them on a net basis.He explained that lower-income households spend a bigger chunk of their income than the rich, so they're hit harder by what's effectively a sales tax."Everything says that the burden would fall on Americans, mainly the working class and the poor," he said.Cuban's concerns about the impact of tariffs on small businesses come at a difficult time for many of them.
