New Delhi, Nov 27 () The DRI has arrested a promoter of a Kolkata-based firm for allegedly evading customs duty of Rs 4.5 crore on import of Chinese-origin mobile phones and laptops, an official statement issued on Wednesday said.
"The modus operandi adopted by the unscrupulous importer was to suppress the actual retail sale price (RSP) of the imported laptops and mobile phones, and evade payment of appropriate countervailing duty," the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said in the statement.
It said Sunil Kumar Patwari, director of Reach Infocom Technology Pvt Ltd, Kolkata, was arrested on Tuesday in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged evasion of customs duty amounting to Rs 4.5 crore, leviable on the imported Chinese-origin mobile phones and laptops.
He has been remanded to judicial custody till December 10, 2019, the DRI said.
An email sent to the firm did not elicit any response. 
"M/s Reach Infocom Technology Pvt Ltd is one of the group companies of Kolkata-based Rashmi Group, owned by Sajjan Kumar Patwari and his son Sunil Kumar Patwari. Rashmi Group companies have been investigated in the past by the Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (now DGGI) for alleged evasion of central excise duty by resorting to clandestine clearance of iron and steel products," the probe agency said.
The group is also under investigation by the CBI for alleged evasion of railway freight on iron ore, it added. AKV IJT

New Delhi, Mar 26 () State-owned telecom firm MTNL on Thursday started offering free access to office server to its enterprise customers' employees to support work from home during the lockdown. The employees of MTNL's corporate customers using its broadband connection will be able to avail this service free for one month, MTNL Chairman and Managing Director Sunil Kumar told . "Many organisations have their main server on MTNL MPLS Network. Employees of such organisations who have MTNL Broadband can be enabled with MTNL VPNoBB (Virtual Private Network Over Broadband). Through this, they can access their office servers. This will be a secure medium," Kumar said. He said this system will give them access to all service that their company offers in office to carry out their task. "Using this, corporate employees can do all the works for which otherwise they have to come to office. It will be just extension of office up to their home. No access limitations. MTNL will be extending this facility for one month without any additional charge, just to enable smooth work from home," he said. New Delhi, Mar 21 () State-run telecom firm MTNL will offer double data in all broadband plans of landline and mobile for a month to encourage work from home for people in the wake of rising cases of coronavirus in the country. "MTNL has doubled free data in all the broadband plans of landline as well as mobile for one month will effect from today so that people are encouraged to work from home," MTNL Chairman and Managing Director Sunil Kumar told . The new scheme will be provided to customers in Delhi and Mumbai where the company operates. On Friday, it announced free broadband service for its landline and new customers for a month to support 'work from home' allowed by most organisations amid the coronavirus outbreak. New customers opting for copper cable based connection will not have to pay even installation charges but will need to buy modem for the service, BSNL officials said. Public sector companies are the first one to come up with schemes to support work from home. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked people to stay indoors and work from home as much as possible while underscoring the dangers of coronavirus, saying the world has never seen a crisis as grave as this. New Delhi, Nov 18 () An amount of nearly Rs three crore has allegedly been released by some officials of the Ranchi unit of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) to unidentified people, prompting the CBI to lodge a case against four persons and a company, and launch a probe.
According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case filed before a Ranchi special court, former deputy director R B Ram (now deceased) and the then KVIC executive Sunil Kumar allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy with certain individuals and violated company procedures, including the General Financial Rules (GFR), and released payments to the tune of Rs 2.85 crore to "individuals of dubious identities".
The CBI registered the case on a written complaint from a senior official of the KVIC, which functions under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry.
According to the central agency, the financial irregularities were committed between 2016 and 2018 as found by an internal committee of the KVIC.
Funds to the tune of over Rs 1.57 crore, meant to be spent under schemes such as the Khadi Reform and Development Programme, the Honey Mission, the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme were allegedly released to two Chennai-based firms.
Similarly, an amount of Rs 42.60 lakh was allegedly released from the KVIC's renovation, publicity and inventory management to an individual.
Later, two more payments of Rs 23 lakh and Rs 62.82 lakh were made to two individuals for the publicity of Khadi reforms and development and procurement of raw silk material. UJN SKL RC
