Essentially, subscribers who use Jio as a second SIM either to retain their number or to continue receiving calls, have likely left the company. With these subscribers switching the boat, it leaves Jio with a higher number of subscribers who pay money to use the telco’s services, translating to better revenue collection. Reliance Jio has traditionally suffered a much inferior rate of active subscribers when compared to its rivals Airtel and Vodafone Idea. According to the latest data published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio’s active subscriber rate is a shade under 80%. In comparison, Airtel’s rate is nearly 98%, while Vodafone Idea is a little over 87%. Active subscribers are those which pay for an active plan to their telecom provider. This means their users will have to pay at least ₹79 per month, depending on their respective circles. Given that Jio has so far refrained from forcing its subscribers to have an active plan for basic services like incoming calls and messages, and that it has also avoided raising tariffs, the telco has only one option left – a higher active subscriber rate, resulting in improved realisations from its customer base. Reliance Jio lost subscribers for the first time in 10 quarters but there's good news for Mukesh Ambani in this too

New Delhi, Apr 3 () Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio will continue to gain market share at the cost of Vodafone Idea's "worsened" financial health that may deteriorate further in the wake of the AGR judgment, Axis Capital said in a note on Friday. Axis Capital said it has trimmed its revenue estimates for wireless telcos. This is because muted subscriber additions as well as hit in 2G/3G conversions to 4G SIMs on account of the lockdown and a possible extension of certain curbs, could partially impact revenue growth that was expected in coming months from the tariff hike in December 2019. "We cut FY21/22E (estimates) revenue of wireless providers by 1-6 per cent and EBITDA (Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation) margin by 20-100 bps (basis points," Axis Capital said in the telecom sector report. It said that while the tariff hikes undertaken by companies in December 2019 is likely to play out in nine months of calender year 2020 as subscribers come for recharge, the floor pricing may be delayed due to the lockdown. As per the Supreme Court judgment, incumbent telcos have to make full payment of Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues including interest, penalty and interest on penalty, it said noting that Bharti Airtel appeared better placed to make the payment, given the recent fund raise. Introduction of floor pricing and cut in levies to ensure that market continues to have four players, can further benefit the industry including Airtel, Reliance Jio, it said. "However, floor pricing may be delayed due to the lockdown. Also, due to economic stress from the lockdown, demand for relief by other industries may increase, which could impact Vodafone Idea's prospects of getting relief from the government," it said. Axis Capital said Airtel and RJio will continue to gain market share at the cost of Vodafone Idea due to latter's worsened financial health which may deteriorate further after the AGR judgment. It noted that telcos had introduced new packs for customers for work from home, had engaged in ensuring service continuity and had rolled out relief offers to low income customers. In its note on Friday, Axis Capital asserted that telcos' subscriber addition will be hit, as the lockdown in wake of COVID-19 will sharply pull down subscriber acquisition, given that people mostly remained at home and shops were closed. "COAI expects subscriber addition of less than 1 million in March 2020 versus average of 3 million per month. Subscriber addition to be hit for most of Q1FY21 due to 21-day lockdown and possibility of restrictions/ partial restrictions getting extended," Axis Capital said. Also, conversion from 2G/3G to 4G may also be hit as it requires new SIM, "which is difficult in a lockdown", it said. "These may partially impact revenue growth that was expected in 9MCY20 (nine months of calender year 2020) from the tariff hike taken in December 2019. Accordingly, we have trimmed our revenue estimates for wireless telcos," Axis Capital said. The last major tariff hike was announced in December 2021 and Airtel had increased the prices by around 20% back then. The general elections are scheduled to commence on April 19 and the last phase will end on June 1. The result of the election will be declared on June 4. According to analysts at Antique Stock Broking, Airtel will emerge as the biggest beneficiary of the tariff hike as it will be able to increase its average revenue per user (<keyword id="20233536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ARPU" source="keywords">ARPU</keyword>) from the existing ₹208 to ₹286 by the end of FY27. The company’s plan to increase its ARPU to ₹286 includes the tariff hike contributing around ₹55, customers moving from 2G to 4G contributing ₹10 and customers opting for costlier 4G and 5G plans contributing ₹14. This also hints towards the company introducing new 5G plans. At present, there are no separate 5G plans and 4G users are being offered complimentary 5G services by both Reliance Jio and Airtel. While challenges do exist as Bharti has chosen a different 5G rollout path versus key competitors, we believe it is unlikely to dent Bharti's subscriber base or growth significantly. We also believe valuations do not reflect the emerging highly positive macro telecom sector environment, opines the analysts. Airtel and Jio have been gaining subscribers over the past few years at the cost of cash-strapped Vi and state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). The two telcos, who are yet to launch 5G services in the country, are expected to continue losing subscribers over the current financial year as well. There were two more incidents where BSNL’s security was compromised, albeit not as severe. The first, where their real-time bandwidth monitoring system was available publicly and second, where directories of BSNL documents were accessible on the web for anyone to see. Robert was able to get his hands on the names of all the employees by gaining access to BSNL’s intranet by using a malicious code. Through that, he was able to attain their personal information like cell phone numbers, dates of birth, salaries and compensation. The state-owned telecommunications company issued a statement saying, “BSNL, being one of the largest Telecom Operators in India, is fully prepared to prevent any data loss related to its employees, customers or stakeholders.” Lapse <keyword id="187124" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Data-Protection">data protection</keyword> This is not the only vulnerability in the network of publicly owned online portals in the country. The National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has reported that there have been a total of 12,317 cyber crime cases registered in 2016. As of now, India doesn’t have any laws that explicitly address data protection or privacy. Nonetheless, the leak contained information that was sensitive, such as Aadhar card numbers and PAN details, pertaining to Jio customers.
