<ul><li>After a couple of dull years and a few failures, online grocery in India is back with a bang. </li><li>SoftBank has put in fresh funds in Grofers while Reliance Industries Limited is reportedly looking to buy a majority stake in Grab. </li><li>Swiggy had recently announced its foray into online grocery delivery with Swiggy stores. </li></ul> There was a time when the online grocery vertical had become the hot favourite with major players trying their luck in the game. But soon with failures piling up one over the other, exits were announced. Come 2019 and it seems like it’s going to be the year hyperlocal grocery delivery again. Sector leader BigBasket may become the first unicorn – clock a valuation of $1 billion – of 2019, and food delivery startup Swiggy threw in its hat into groceries with Swiggy Stores. Swiggy, which raised a whopping $1 billion in funding in December, has already piloted the operations in Gurugram and has tied up with <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/swiggy-takes-on-bigbasket-grofers-to-deliver-groceries-from-local-stores-119021201294_1.html">3,500</a> local stores. However, these startups will be battling the deep pockets of Mukesh Ambani and the Japanese Softbank. Reliance Industries Limited is <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/ril-in-talks-for-majority-stake-in-startup-grab/articleshow/68192744.cms">reportedly</a> in talks to buy a majority stake in Grab, a hyperlocal delivery startup for groceries, medicines and food based out of Mumbai. Grofers has raised <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/grofers-raises-fresh-funds-from-existing-investor-softbank-as-e-grocers-valuation-hits-425m/68203728">fresh funds</a> from SoftBank Vision Fund (the Japanese firm had earlier too invested in the e-grocery company) which takes its valuation to $425 million. This excitement was missing in the space the last few years. E-grocery startup PepperTap had to shut its operations in 2016. In a blog on <a href="https://yourstory.com/2016/04/peppertap-journey-navneet-singh">YourStory</a>, Navneet Singh, founder of PepperTap, wrote about the problem they faced. “The integration of our app with our partner stores was not great. In the race to pepper the whole country with PepperTap, we had brought too many stores online far too quickly,” he wrote. Another unicorn startup Paytm too had explored the e-grocery space with Paytm Zip, only to shut shop in 2015. So, even with clear failures in the past, what makes today’s unicorns still find their way into the space? A simple answer - the demand still exists. Grocery stores aren’t called convenience stores for nothing. For today’s millennial who is busy with work to order groceries on a tap is an easy, convenient way out. A report on the online grocery space in India by Red Seer consulting states, “Inspite of all these disruptions and changes, one thing that did not change was the massive potential for online grocery- as indicated by India’s USD 500+ Bn grocery market out of which a mere 0.2% is online (~USD 1.2 bn overall and ~USD 1 Bn considering only hyperlocal grocery).” The proof that it still works is seen in BigBasket’s <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/bigbaskets-wholesale-unit-revenue-up-35/articleshow/67358734.cms">revenue</a> report. In the year 2017-18, BigBasket saw its revenue grow by 35% while losses dropped by 53%. In FY19, the company expects the revenue to grow by <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/companies/bigbasket-chief-hari-menon-expects-75-revenue-jump-in-fy19-to-rs-3500-crore-3183251.html">75%</a>. Grofers which had posted a net loss of <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/grofers-narrows-loss-to-rs-258-cr-as-sales-double-in-fy2018/68105608">₹268 crore</a> in FY 17, managed to post a loss of ₹258 crore in FY18. The company has also added <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/grofers-eyes-rs-2500-crore-revenue-in-fy19-adds-2-5-lakh-new-customers-in-january-3453911.html">2.5 lakh</a> new customers in January, while also aiming for a revenue of over ₹2500 crore. And with big backers like Mukesh Ambani and Softbank entering the fray, the competition, too, will be intense. The battle for dominance may mean more discounts and cashbacks for consumers. Online grocers are back in business in India with billions more to burn – and that may be good for consumers

<ul><li><keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> may be announcing new service called '<keyword id="207100" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dash">Dash</keyword>'.</li><li>Reports say the company will deliver groceries and medicines to users.</li></ul>Swiggy may <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/swiggy-looks-to-bring-medicines-groceries-to-you/articleshow/63919179.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">soon be announcing</a> a service called ‘Dash’, under which the company will deliver grocery and medicines. The venture might help optimise the costs of running their fleet of delivery vehicles. A source told <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/swiggy-looks-to-bring-medicines-groceries-to-you/articleshow/63919179.cms">Economic Times</a>, “While several categories have been discussed, they may start with medicines and then on to groceries.” Not only will such an endeavor diversify Swiggy’s portfolio, but the move is also aimed a boosting delivery volumes. If volume is the keyword, then Meituan-Dianping probably had a part to play in this decision. As a key investor in Swiggy, it can be reasonably assumed that they’re looking to apply their business model from China to Swiggy’s India operations. It includes offering deliveries and services across numerous categories, including groceries, cabs, personal services and payments. Swiggy currently has a workforce of approximately 30,000 delivery personnel and they plan on maximising their output by increasing the avenues for delivery. Their focus is going to be on afternoons, particularly between 2pm and 6pm. According to reports, ‘Dash’ should be live in the next couple of months. The move comes at a time when Swiggy is in conversation with Coatue Management and DST Global, both global investment companies, to raise $200 million. The influx of resources has the potential to increase Swiggy’s valuation to over $1 billion. Statistics suggest that Swiggy already handles over 7 million orders each month across 35,000 restaurants. In comparison, Zomato claimed that they crossed the 5.5 million mark in India and the UAE last month. This isn’t a new trend. Not in terms of businesses diversifying or even <keyword id="6376068" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-delivery">food delivery</keyword> services specifically. Globally, services like DoorDash have transformed from being an on-demand restaurant delivery service to integrating grocery deliveries in partnership with retail giants like Walmart. Uber is another example. The company diversified from being a cab service to launching UberEats, a food delivery app.

<keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> is planning to invest in online food delivery startup <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swiggy">Swiggy</keyword>, which also got attention from Chinese players like Ele.me that is backed by Alibaba. 
 
However, Amazon India and Swiggy are in initial discussions only and talks may fall apart too. 
 Bengaluru-based Swiggy, which competes with <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> and <keyword id="1666592" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foodpanda">Foodpanda</keyword>, is getting lot of attention from strategic investors as it is fulfilling close to 40,000 orders per day. 
 
As per Morgan Stanley, online penetration in food delivery services was only 2 per cent in India while it was 20-30 per cent in China, the UK and Canada. 
 
"Everyone is talking since they are doing really well but it is not certain that a deal will be closed," sources told ET. 
 
Swiggy was founded by BITS-Pilani alumnus Sriharsha Majety, the CEO, and Rahul Jaimini and Nandan Reddy. 
 
ET reported Swiggy's executives have held three meetings with Amazon's India head Amit Agarwal. 
 
Swiggy has raised about $72 million so far and has investors including, Accel Partners, Norwest Venture Partners and Bessemer Venture Partners. 
 
"There are synergies in hyperlocal cross-utilisation. Amazon will get a big food business and a hyper-local fleet on whose backbone they can grow aggressively in grocery as well," an investor in the hyper-local market told ET. 
 
"For Swiggy, getting a high order density will lead to better utilisation of the hyper-local fleet leading to a sustainable business. After food, the next logical expansion would be grocery and Amazon Now does grocery, so maybe that's the synergy."

After Chinese investors, online food delivery startup Swiggy gets attention from Amazon India

New Delhi, Two men were arrested for allegedly duping people by hacking food and grocery delivery app <keyword id="19896956" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="keywords">Swiggy</keyword> account, a Delhi Police official said on Monday. The accused were identified as <keyword id="20480275" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aniket" source="keywords">Aniket</keyword> Kalra (25), and Himanshu Kumar (23), both residents of <keyword id="19921445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gurugram" source="keywords">Gurugram</keyword>, Haryana. According to police, the duo was using 'Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system to hack Swiggy accounts of the victims. The official said that after hacking the account, the accused used to place orders from the victims account and then used to sell the grocery products at a lower price. Their arrest came after a woman complainant, a resident of Sultanpur was cheated of Rs 97,197 by some unknown persons from her Lazy Pay account linked with Swiggy account. During the investigation, technical analysis of call details and money transaction was made and it was found that complainant received a call in late night hours from an Automated Telephony Interactive Voice Response (IVR) System and she was told in Pre-Recorded Voice Responses that somebody is trying to access her Swiggy account. Thereafter, her Swiggy account was hacked and online orders of Rs 97,197 were placed using her Lazypay account linked with Swiggy. "Further, CDR analysis of the calling number revealed that the mobile number from which the complainant received the call is an application based generated number connected with IVR System. Simultaneously, details from Swiggy were obtained and it came to notice that the alleged orders were delivered in Gurugram," said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Ankit Chauhan. The mobile number used for delivering the products was found registered on fake ownership. "The team worked on all the available aspects of the case. The efforts of the team bore fruits when during IMEI search, the location of suspect was zeroed in Sector 7, Gurugram, Haryana," said the <keyword id="19916219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dcp" source="keywords">DCP</keyword>. Raids were conducted and Aniket and Himanshu were apprehended. On interrogation, Aniket disclosed that he used to work as a delivery boy in Zomato and Swiggy. "Thereafter, he started buying grocery items from online selling platform at lower price through offers and then used to sell them in the market, thus saving 5 per cent-10 per cent on every order. Further, he along with co-accused <keyword id="20646636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ansh" source="keywords">Ansh</keyword>, a resident of Punjab met on telegram and they both started duping people through IVR Calling system," said the DCP. Ansh has the data of people who have linked their credit card/debit card/internet banking with their Swiggy account. "Ansh used to target victims by hacking their Swiggy account through pre-recorded voice responses and thereby accessing confidential data of victims. Then Aniket used to link a phone number registered on fake ownership with the Swiggy account of the victim and then used to place orders of Grocery items for as much amount as available in the account of the victim," said the DCP. The random addresses of Gurugram were provided for delivery of items to avoid any police action. "Aniket and his friend Himanshu used to sell the grocery items in the local market at discounted price and then used to send 50 per cent profit to Ansh via cash depositing machines or various UPI Id's," said the DCP. Himanshu owns a medical shop in Gurugram and under the guise of a medical shop he was involved in transferring the cheated amounts to various UPI IDs and accounts. "Further investigation of the case is in progress to trace the co-accused and to link other cases," the DCP added.

According to a report on the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/uber-eats-india-likely-to-end-up-on-swiggys-plate/articleshow/68105369.cms">Economic Times</a>, the deal is in its final stages of negotiation and is expected to close by next month. The report further mentions that the deal could be a share swap, where Swiggy in exchange for taking over Ubereats will give the ride hailing company Uber a 10% stake. Earlier <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/ubereats-on-sale-swiggy-zomato-competing-acquire-food-delivery-app-report/story/321164.html">reports</a> also suggested that Zomato and Swiggy both were looking at acquiring Ubereats India operations. Both the companies together hold 80% of the online food delivery space in India. With Swiggy reportedly leading the race for acquisition now, the deal would give the company a better stand to take on rival Zomato. Ubereats launched in India in 2016 and has grown considerably over time. Jason Droege, global head of Ubereats told <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/india-fastest-growing-market-for-ubereats/articleshow/66384076.cms">ET </a>that its India wing has grown seven fold in order volume in the past six months in India, while adding over 4,500 delivery partners each week. Swiggy became one of India’s fastest unicorn in June last year, getting the prime status in just four years of operations. In December 2018, the food delivery startup further raked up a whopping <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/with-1-b-new-money-and-3-3-b-valuation-swiggy-turns-swaggy/articleshow/67186809.cms">$1 billion</a> in funding, taking up its valuation to $3.3 billion. “With this funding, we will further invest in building differentiated offerings, plugging the white spaces in the ecosystem, and developing our technology while keeping superlative customer experience at the core," said Sriharsha Majety, CEO, Swiggy had then <a href="https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/308736">said</a>. The startup is also expanding its <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/not-only-food-swiggy-will-also-delivery-groceries-medicines-vegetables-at-your-doorstep/story/318547.html">offering</a>, as it announced earlier in February, that it will soon start delivery of groceries, medicines and more. It has also been on an acquisition spree – it <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/AOxcPY6Gu57vSsOLz5whiM/Swiggy-acquires-ondemand-delivery-platform-Scootsy.html">acquired</a> on demand delivery platform Scootsy to leverage the Scootsy’s existent network of restaurants and grow its consumer base. It had also acqui-hired the gourmet Asian food startup 48east. On the technology side, Swiggy had also taken over Bengaluru-based AI startup Kint.io. “This acqui-hire is part of Swiggy's strategy to scale our tech prowess by bringing in entrepreneurial teams that can solve unique customer problems,” said Dale Vaz, Head of Engineering and Data Sciences, Swiggy had told <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/startups/swiggy-acquires-bengaluru-based-ai-startup-kint-io/67829829">ETtech</a>.
