The firm closed a <a target="_blank" href="https://techcrunch.com/2023/11/16/menlo-ventures-closes-on-1-35b-in-new-capital-targets-investments-in-ai-startups/?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJVkFGzX14zh8oeHL-Sgmmj-ke1177qyd4BoL1N3eHbqg52MVVO8w7Q3RR0puoRkQ4EVSoyHdffSI5guxcbH9Yl6z1fudXp_WheLfxYB72QiEo_1inwN7UZNPAOLctyEfQ-jGLcCesRz0ajnDsJPg8AVE2iYArspH-l5HM_X7Pbp">$1.35 billion fund</a> last year specifically for investing in fledgling AI startups, and it's already been an early backer of AI powerhouses including vector database <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chroma-weaviate-pinecone-raise-funding-a16z-index-vector-database-ai-2023-3">Pinecone</a>, LLM developer <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/researchers-at-anthropic-taught-these-ai-chatbots-how-to-lie-2024-1">Anthropic</a>, enterprise data cleaner Unstructured, conversational AI system Neon, automated data cleanup program Cleanlab, and many others. For Tully, one of Menlo's key check-writers in this space, having a background in computer science and operating experience has been necessary when it comes to evaluating potential AI investments. "I'm still coding every day," he said. "That really helps me for my job, and I think it's really hard to be a VC and invest in a deeply technical product if you don't have a technical background. I'm actually using this stuff." <h2>Before becoming a VC, Tully worked at startups and led engineering teams</h2>For Tully, who grew up in the Bay Area, computers and games have always been a core part of his life. He had an Apple II computer and cassette tape player that plugged into a TV on a rolling cart, which is where he taught himself to code by playing video games and reading through manuals. He said an early game of his, coded using Applesoft BASIC, was a text-based adventure game in which players would get lost in a forest and navigate through a maze, answering a series of fork-in-the-road puzzles to chase down the treasure. As a teenager, Tully had a bank of modems at his mom's house to organize a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/11/the-lost-civilization-of-dial-up-bulletin-board-systems/506465/">bulletin board system</a> – a pre-internet computer server that other users could dial into – to host pirated video games. After college, Tully gravitated toward startups, becoming a software engineer at the dot-com-era companies iScale and Pillar Data Systems, the latter of which he left in 2003 and was eventually acquired by Oracle. He spent 14 years at Yahoo, working his way up to lead engineering for Yahoo, AOL, and its media properties, which included the Huffington Post, Tumblr, Polyvore, and Flurry, and managing a team of more than 850 people. In 2017, Tully joined data analytics company Splunk as its chief technology officer and senior vice president of product and engineering and managed the company's migration to the cloud. While he loved his team at Splunk, Tully said that he was always interested in the investing side of the tech world, and his interest was further piqued by his wife, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sequoia-partner-jess-lee-advice-for-startup-founders-2022-9">Jess Lee</a>, who has been a partner at Sequoia since 2016. "Growing up in the Valley, I had this in the back of my mind, and I thought that as a technical person, I could do the job differently, so I began to take some calls," he said. One of those calls eventually turned into a job offer at Menlo Ventures, and Tully joined the firm as a partner in 2021. "This was an opportunity to be part of the next wave of folks that joined the firm, which was exciting to me because I'm a builder," he said. <h2>At Menlo Ventures, Tully writes checks for AI startups at the app and infrastructure layers</h2>Since joining Menlo, Tully has invested in nine startups, including Pinecone, which raised a $28 million Series A in 2022; Neon, which raised a $46 million Series B in 2023; Unstructured, which raised a $40 million Series B in 2024; and JuliaHub, an AI programming startup that raised $24 million in 2021. Another of his portfolio companies, AI quality management software startup True Era, was acquired by Snowflake earlier this year. For Tully, finding camaraderie with technical founders has been a winning strategy so far in his VC career. "My background helps me connect with technical founders because they want investors who they can talk shop with," he said. "I've managed teams and have been CTO of a public company." He's also written code as a way to help win over startups in the broader Menlo Ventures portfolio. In 2022, another Menlo partner, Naomi Pilosof Ionita, was working to land a deal for fintech startup Orb. The company didn't have a software development kit, so Tully wrote them one, printed out a link to the devkit, rolled it into a scroll, and delivered it to the startup. That helped seal the deal, and Ionita led Orb's $14 million Series A funding round. While Menlo has been bolstering its portfolio with AI-infrastructure startups, Tully said he's excited about opportunities at the application layer. This means looking at various vertical AI categories, including legaltech — he wrote a $14 million seed check for the AI legal assistant Eve, which was announced in 2023 — as well as marketing and automation. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, Tully is also trying out various AI coding copilots, and he says that the tech is making him "50-60% more productive if I'm being honest." "I'm really high on AI coding assistants," he said. "Opportunities in this space are pretty compelling." Her departure after six years follows the resignations of three members of the founding team, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-execs-worried-company-collapse-ilya-sutskever-left-report-2024-9">Ilya Sutskever</a>, who was chief scientist, Andrej Karpathy, and John Schulman, this year. A fourth cofounder and president, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-leadership-changes-brockman-deng-schulman-anthropic-departures-2024-8">Greg Brockman</a>, is out on sabbatical through the end of the year. In the fallout of these exits, tech recruiter Alex Klein said he's noticed more OpenAI employees turn on the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/linkedin-open-to-work-banner-badge-job-pros-cons-2024-9">Open to Work</a> banner on LinkedIn, which is supposed to signal recruiters that they'd welcome their outreach. Dan Miller, a recruiter and partner at True Search, said his firm has fielded more interest from current employees since the board's failed coup."I have a couple of friends who are at OpenAI. They reached out asking, "How do I get into Anthropic?" said Tim Tully, a partner at Anthropic backer Menlo Ventures.Suddenly, it's starting to feel like open season for OpenAI employees as the company announced it closed on a massive $6.6 billion funding round, in which Cathie Wood's Ark Venture Fund <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cathie-wood-ark-venture-openai-funding-2024-10">agreed to invest at least $250 million</a>, Business Insider first reported. Ark joins other investors Thrive Capital, which led the round. Half a dozen recruiters and technology investors told Business Insider that the company's near-constant power struggles, purges, and a fierce philosophical debate among workers about how best to develop artificial intelligence make it easier for other startups to swoop in and hire away technical staff. The people they lost weren't just colleagues, they were the people that were building the dang thing," Klein said. "I would imagine being at OpenAI, they have a good sense of how valuable those folks are."<h2 id="f293bb54-6ded-4a4d-944b-ac43c7a6d587">Seeking alignment</h2>The departures bring into focus internal conflicts at the company. When OpenAI launched as a research nonprofit, it sought "to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return." Anthropic has been a particularly popular landing spot. This year, it hired away OpenAI's former safety lead, Jan Leike; Schulman, cofounder and chief architect of ChatGPT; and Durk Kingma, another cofounder.In an X post on Tuesday, Kingma said, "Anthropic's approach to AI development resonates significantly with my own beliefs, looking forward to contributing to Anthropic's mission of developing powerful AI systems responsibly."The chaos at OpenAI is a boon for Anthropic's recruiting efforts."When you look at another company and there's drama around it, as a customer or an employee, you're like, wait a minute. If all these great people are leaving, what does that say?" said Matt Murphy, a partner at Menlo Ventures. "The more time you spend with Anthropic, the more you really like the team and what they're about."Companies like Anthropic and Perplexity are telling recruiters that they're seeking "mission-oriented" candidates. Employees who feel tightly aligned with the mission are less likely to jump for more money, recruiters said, and as far as salaries go, OpenAI continues to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.levels.fyi/companies/openai/salaries/software-engineer?country=254">pay above</a> market rate. Founders added that they get better work out of people who are highly engaged with the mission."At Glean, we are very focused on mission-oriented candidates," said Arvind Jain, Glean's founder and CEO. "Engineers love the product we build as it is for them. And when they are aligned with our mission of helping everyone work better with AI, they make the biggest impact."Jain added that workers who are experts in large language models remain in short supply. "There is more demand, and more startups than folks, especially in the Bay Area where we hire," Jain said.<h2 id="6f360375-df24-4bbe-8971-194139e4a1f3">Size matters</h2>There's another, less altruistic reason employees are leaving OpenAI. Recruiters and investors said employees could make a lot more money at a smaller startup by selling their shares in an exit."One consideration would be that Open AI is so highly valued at this point that it's a question how much more your stock would be worth compared to the strike price (at least for recent hires) if and when it ever went public," said Matt Hoffman, partner and head of talent at M13, an early-stage venture capital firm.He continued, "But what I see much more often is that for the best engineers, it's far more interesting to work on early stage, smaller companies where they can have an outsize impact in building and creating the next big thing."The search startup Perplexity has more than doubled its workforce to just over a hundred people this year, according to the company. Part of the pitch it makes to candidates, said Johnny Ho, chief strategy officer and a cofounder, is that they can work without the red tape and time-wasters at a bigger company."One thing that's very easy to perceive is the ratio of the number of users we have compared to the number of employees," Ho said. "It's a unique opportunity where you have a lot of leverage for your skillset wherever you are on the stack."

And let's face it, they've been awful. Except for one.Cameron's sequel to "The Terminator," 1991's "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," wasn't just a worthy continuation of the story of an unstoppable killing machine from the future, but also stands as one of the best sequels ever made.Read more: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oscar-contender-movies-playing-in-theaters-soon-2019-10">18 major Oscar contender movies you shouldn't miss in theaters</a>So with that history, the powers that be decided, while developing the most recent "Terminator" movie, to pretend that "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," "Terminator Salvation," and (I get chills even writing the title) "Terminator Genisys" never existed. It was time to clean the slate and start fresh … from "T2."And "Terminator: Dark Fate" (in theaters November 1) is the redo the franchise needed.The movie takes place in a world that never had to deal with Skynet, the company that created the artificial intelligence that birthed the Terminator and wiped out humanity. That reality was made possible by the events of "Judgment Day." So in this world, the takeover by the machines never happened - well, by the T-800s anyway.Turns out other machines rose instead.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>In "Dark Fate," Legion is the company that created an artificial intelligence that kills off most of the human race. And these machines, known as Rev-9, are pretty nasty. They have a skeleton base like a Terminator but then there's a liquid surface on top of that which can split off and create its own form. So you are basically always battling two things when confronted by a Rev-9.In the movie, a Rev-9 (played by Gabriel Luna) comes from the future to present day Mexico City to terminate Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), who is a very important person in the future. To protect Dani, a half human/half cyborg named Grace (Mackenzie Davis) is sent from the future. She also gets a little help from Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), who has been on the hunt for signs of the apocalypse for decades.How Schwarzenegger's Terminator plays into all of this get us into spoiler territory, so let's just say, yes, he's definitely a major part of the movie."Dark Fate" is directed by Tim Miller ("Deadpool"), who oversees some great action sequences and - unlike the previous sequels we no longer speak of - doesn't get bogged down in "Terminator" history or time travel.Mackenzie Davis ("Halt and Catch Fire," "Black Mirror," "Blade Runner 2049," "Tully") continues to evolve as an actress, this time showing that she can play a great action hero.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>But it's Linda Hamilton who is the true star of the movie. Like her last time in the franchise, "Judgment Day," she brings a ferocity to the screen that is fun and exciting to watch.Also back for the first time since "Judgment Day" is James Cameron, who has a producer credit. It takes a small village to make any movie, but do not for a second think Cameron wasn't heavily involved in making sure the franchise he created would have a strong rebound.It's also a big rebound for Paramount, the studio releasing "Dark Fate."
