REUTERS/Jim Bourg               " /><p>But the list of credit card networks extends well beyond those three heavyweights, as there are dozens of other companies around the world that each have a piece of the pie.</p><p>Below, we've outlined each of these companies, identified their credit card network market share, and explained what each brings to the table.</p><h2>Visa</h2><p>Visa remains the king of the mountain in the card network industry. Visa posted $2.1 trillion in total payment volume (TPV) on 43.2 billion transactions during its fiscal Q2 2019 marking an 11% year-over-year (YoY) increase in transaction volume. Additionally, Visa <a href="https://usa.visa.com/visa-everywhere/blog/bdp/2019/06/03/hey-new-york-1559580846202.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expects</a> its estimated 100 million contactless cards in the US to triple to 300 million by the end of 2020. </p><h2><strong>MasterCard</strong></h2><p>MasterCard is no slouch, as it has secured the No. 2 spot among card networks. Mastercard posted $3.9 billion in net revenue in Q1 2019, up 9% YOY. Additionally, the card network counts  2.5 billion cards in circulation, and Mastercard-branded cards grew 224 million YoY.</p><h2><strong>American Express</strong></h2><p>American Express remains a force among its peer card networks even though it doesn't have the sheer numbers of Visa or MasterCard.  In 2018, Amex added 1 million new merchants in the US to its merchant network in addition to growing its US billed business by 9% YOY. </p><h2><strong>Discover</strong></h2><p>Discover remains in fourth place behind Visa, MasterCard, and Amex. Discover saw 10% year-over-year (YoY) growth in its total network volume (TNV) in Q4 2018, to hit $99 billion. </p><h2><strong>Interlink</strong></h2><p>Interlink is the electronic funds transfer division of Visa and it operates primarily within the U.S. But unlike a standard Visa check card purchase, and Interlink purchase uses a PIN and can provide cash back from the merchant.</p><h2><strong>STAR</strong></h2><p>STAR was one of the first networks to focus on PIN debit, and First Data bought the company in 2003. The company prides itself on its innovation, such as the first processing of an envelope-less deposit at an ATM and the first real-time direct electronic check debit.</p><h2><strong>Accel</strong></h2><p>The Accel interbank network links more than 400,000 ATMs throughout all 50 states, along with a few U.S. Air Force bases around the globe.</p><h2><strong>Interac</strong></h2><p>Interac is the primary Canadian debit card system and flourishes there because other traditional providers, such as Visa and MasterCard, hardly provide cards in the nation. There are over 59,000 automated teller machines that can be accessed through the Interac network in Canada, and over 450,000 merchant locations accepting Interac debit payments.</p><h2><strong>Visa ReadyLink</strong></h2><p>This service allows Visa cardholders to quickly add cash to their prepaid accounts. Retailers such as Safeway and 7-Eleven make ReadyLink available to customers.</p><h2><strong>PULSE</strong></h2><p>Discover owns PULSE, which operates an interbank network for more than 4,400 financial institutions and 380,000 ATMs in the U.S.  In 2019 PULSE, saw 11% YoY growth to reach $47.1 billion in volume. </p><h2>JCB</h2><p>Japan Credit Bureau (JCB) established itself in the Japanese credit card market and its cards are even used in over 20 different countries. Here are the credit card networks and payment networks you need to know

The take rate refers to the cut of a transaction that the company gets to keep as revenue, which means a higher take rate will result in more revenue per transaction.</p><p>While the growing adoption of Venmo boosts the number of transactions taking place, it presents a problem for PayPal as the company makes little money off peer-to-peer transactions. With peer-to-peer payments, Venmo takes a 3% cut if a credit card is used, but charges nothing if one pays a friend by connecting a bank account or an existing Venmo balance. </p><p>Monetization of Venmo presents a large opportunity for revenue growth, especially as Perlin expects another solid quarter of volume growth. </p><p>"We expect Venmo to report another solid quarter of volume growth (86% y/y last quarter) and believe investors will look for an update on the potential monetization of this volume, including Pay with Venmo, which was rolled out for all US merchants during Q4/17," Perlin wrote in a note sent to clients on Tuesday.</p><p>"We estimate that Venmo monetization could represent a potential $0.09 to EPS in FY18 (some amount possibly already contemplated in guidance) and $0.15 in FY19."</p><p>Though competition is increasing, Perlin reiterated his outperform rating and remains impressed by Paypal's strong account growth driven mainly by Paypal and Venmo. At the end of the fourth quarter, the company had 227 million active customer accounts and 18 million active merchant accounts, he writes. Payments Weekender is a collection of our favorite digital media news of the week from <a href="http://bii_www.businessinsider.com/welcome/newsletters/?&amp;utm_source=House&amp;utm_term=CtgrPr_PI-weekender-2015-7-18&amp;utm_campaign=CtgrPr_nlsa">BI Intelligence</a>, Business Insider's paid research service.</span></em></p><p>A FINAL LOOK AT PAYPAL AS PART OF EBAY: PayPal will officially spin off from parent-company eBay beginning <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_383151744"><span class="aQJ">July 20</span></span>, and a number of factors indicate that it will perform strongly as a stand-alone company, according to yesterday's report of eBay's earnings. But there's also some cause for concern. US e-commerce has been growing around 14.7% per quarter for the year ending in Q1 2015. </li><li>PayPal's off-eBay business is growing even faster: Payments processed for third-party merchants grew 27.4% to $51.5 billion, compared with 35.4% a year earlier. </li><li>Volume on eBay is actually holding PayPal's growth rate back: Payments processed for purchases made on eBay's marketplace shrank 1.2% to $14.5 billion, compared with a 9% increase a year earlier.</li><li>eBay only accounts for about one-fifth of PayPal's volume: Payments volume on eBay shrank as a percentage of TPV, from 27% in Q2 2014 to 22% in Q2 2015.</li></ul><p>Here's what PayPal has to look forward to as a stand-alone company: </p><ul><li>A move into in-store commerce: Digital payments in stores are become increasingly more common. And at $300 billion in sales, e-commerce in the US accounts for just over 6% of total retail sales, meaning the in-store opportunity is significantly greater. PayPal is actively pursuing this opportunity, most recently with its acquisition of white-label mobile wallet provider Paydiant. Paydiant already boasts clients with a huge retail footprint, including Subway and the merchant consortium behind MCX. </li><li>Increased influence in digital remittances. There's $34 billion in revenue from international remittances - payments sent by foreign workers to their relatives back home - at stake as digital makes this market more accessible to new entrants. PayPal recently made it clear that it's going to pursue this market aggressively through its acquisition of digital remittance company Xoom. </li><li>Expansion in mobile commerce: PayPal admittedly dropped the ball on mobile, but the company has redefined itself thanks to the acquisition of Braintree in late 2013. Braintree, which is prides itself on its mobile-first strategy, has been able to consistently win clients for PayPal including some of the hottest mobile startups, like Uber and OpenTable. Mobile commerce reached $31.5 billion in the US, or 10.5% of e-commerce, in 2014. </li></ul><p>But PayPal could face trouble for these reasons: </p><ul><li>Increased competition in e-commerce and mobile commerce: Visa, American Express, and Amazon have already released 'buy buttons' that customers can use to pay for goods offered on third-party sites where PayPal has historically been strong. PayPal will face hurdles with the launch of Apple Pay and forthcoming launch of Android Pay on mobile. These features, which will come preloaded on smartphones, serve the same function as PayPal and may be easier to use.  </li><li>High barriers to entry in stores: Paydiant's biggest value to brick-and-mortar retailers is that it makes loyalty and marketing through mobile easy. But Apple and Google plan to push their own commerce ecosystem for in-store retailers as well. Twenty-eight percent of international students in the US come from China, according to the company. </p><p>peerTransfer markets to the international student segment because they represent a lucrative demographic. Families of international students studying abroad at colleges in the US are usually relatively wealthy. That's because it's extremely expensive to go to college in the US and most international families don't receive any financial aid. The wealthy are also more likely to own a smartphone or computer, which are the only platforms peerTransfer supports.</p><p>To gain access to these families, peerTransfer partners with hundreds of colleges to advertise their services. By using universities' international student departments as distribution channels, peerTransfer has a captive audience that it can market to. </p><p>TRANSFAST DEPLOYS BANK DEPOSIT NETWORK IN AFRICA: Transfast, the digital-focused remittance company, has extended its bank deposit network to allow people in the US and Canada to send funds to friends and family members' bank accounts in 23 more African countries. Transfast has partnered with 600 banks representing 6,000 branch locations to allow senders to directly deposit funds into a recipient's bank account. The new network covers 90% of adult bank account holders in the 23 countries, <a href="http://e.businessinsider.com/52654c6e462018e2ea6db9fb2u6ij.1nz/VagsmsPo0YZOmqL0Aded3" target="_blank">according to Transfast's press release</a>. Senders can also choose to send funds for cash pick up, or they can deposit money into the receiver's M-PESA mobile money account. Transfast senders can only move funds using a computer or mobile phone. </p><p>Transfast is serving both the banked and the unbanked with its diversified receive options. Receive-side markets are fragmented, with concentrations of banked and unbanked consumers. By allowing for mobile money, bank deposits, and cash pick-up, Transfast will be able to serve anyone in those countries.    </p><p>ZESTFINANCE SERVING NEAR-PRIME BORROWERS: ZestFinance, the US-based big data company, has <a href="http://e.businessinsider.com/52654c6e462018e2ea6db9fb2u6ij.1nz/VagsmsPo0YZOmqL1Ae5d2" target="_blank">launched</a> an online loan product called Basix that provides loans to an underserved segment - US near-prime borrowers. Near-prime borrowers have credit scores that are just below 660, meaning they still have fairly strong financial histories but are often cut out of the traditional lending market because they are deemed too risky by banks.</p><p>Basix will offer loans ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 on three year terms, carrying interest rates between 26% and 36%. The service will first be rolled out for borrowers in Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, New Mexico, South Dakota and Utah. Basix will report a borrower's payment history to traditional credit scorers, in the hopes that the borrowers' credit scores will improve and lift them into the "prime" category. To help them make payments on time, ZestFinance is giving borrower's a 15 day grace period.</p><p>ZestFinance's near-prime credit scoring technology could make it an appropriate fit for China's market. The vast majority of China's citizens don't own a credit card card and therefore don't have a traditional credit score. ZestFinance's scoring methodology, which uses unique data points outside of a credit score, could help these non-traditional borrowers receive real-time loans. In fact, ZestFinance already runs e-commerce marketplace JD.com's new loan installment program in China.                     </p><p><em><span><span id="docs-internal-guid-eaae21d7-9cb7-3920-1971-eda5ad7b6a2f">Find this article interesting? <p>In it, he writes that he's optimistic about a spun-out PayPal - even though everyone is going nuts over Apple Pay.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Here's what he said:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">PayPal is a high-growth business with significant opportunities to expand its existing market and margins while pursuing new paths in financial services for consumers and merchants. With significant scale and an attractive funding mix, PayPal generates high incremental margins on payment volume increases which it can use to fund sustained growth.<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Apple's entry into the payments space dampened investors' enthusiasm for PayPal, creating an interesting entry point. We think the market is missing the fact that ApplePay is primarily an offline mobile solution focused on the Point of Sale (POS) opportunity which represents a small fraction of PayPal's current business. When we break down the applicability of ApplePay to PayPal's business mix, we find that ApplyPay will compete directly with only 1.5-2% of PayPal's total payment volume (TPV).</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">We believe that Apple's entry into the mobile payments space could ironically be a net positive for PayPal. Mobile payments have been "the next big thing" for almost five year but have failed to ramp. In part, this is because one needs buy-in from financial institutions, merchants, and consumers in order for a payment technology to gain acceptance. With no pressure to catalyze a decision, the different incentives of these groups have not proven to be sufficiently aligned to overcome their inertia and come to an agreement. MCX, Google, and PayPal now need partners to compete with Apple and we think multiple win/win deals exist. PayPal's current POS business is de minimis, allowing the company to price disruptively while creating substantial value.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Finally, PayPal's value will be better reflected in a smaller, more nimble entity. PayPal has the option to go-it-alone, sell to one of many potentially interested parties, or to open itself up to partnerships with other key online players (e.g. Google, Facebook, Amazon, Alibaba, Apple) and become a neutral, online payments network (essentially becoming "the Visa of the Internet"). The market is currently valuing PayPal at approximately 11.5x-14.5x x 2015 EPS (assuming an 8-9x EBITDA multiple for eBay) which seems too cheap for a company growing sales 20% with significant strategic optionality and a strong chance to shape the future of payments.</p>
<p>Loeb's take on PayPal runs counter to a lot of what we've been hearing from payments industry sources. They tell us they expect merchants to begin accepting payments from brands like Google, Amazon, and Apple - and that consumers will fund their accounts with those services directly with their credit cards. That would leave PayPal out of the equation. Meanwhile, the conventional wisdom in the industry is that developers building apps that accept payments (stuff like Uber or Airbnb) prefer using software tools from a payment company called Stripe. </p>
