Around 75 % of <keyword id="20593458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPI-users" source="keywords">UPI users</keyword> will stop using it if any transaction charge is levied on the service, a survey by LocalCircles said today. The survey found that 38% of users make over 50% of their payment transactions via <keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPI" source="keywords">UPI</keyword> instead of debit, credit, or any other form of digital transaction. "Only 22 % UPI users surveyed are willing to bear a <keyword id="20813527" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="transaction-fee" source="keywords">transaction fee</keyword> on payments, 75% of respondents stated that they will stop using UPI if a transaction fee is introduced," the survey said. The survey comprising three broad areas, claims to have received 42,000 responses from 308 districts but the number of replies on each question varied. The questions regarding transaction fee on UPI received 15,598 responses. The <keyword id="19907219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Payments-Corporation-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Payments Corporation of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="National Payments Corporation of India">National Payments Corporation of India</keyword> (NPCI) posted a record 57% rise in the volume of transactions and 44% rise in value in the 2023-24 fiscal year, compared to the previous fiscal year. For the first time UPI transactions crossed 100 billion and closed at 131 billion in a financial year, compared to 84 billion in 2022-23. In value terms, it touched Rs 199.89 trillion, compared to Rs 139.1 trillion, the report said. The survey found 37 % of respondents shared UPI transaction accounts for more than 50 % of their total payment in value terms. "With UPI rapidly becoming an integral part of nearly 4 in 10 consumers, there is strong resistance to any kind of direct or indirect transaction charges being imposed. Payments made via Unified Payments Interface (UPI) reported a 45% yearly growth, according to data from the National Payment Corporation of <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> (<keyword id="19998946" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NPCI" source="keywords">NPCI</keyword>). The value of transactions also saw a growth of over 35%, totaling Rs 20.64 trillion. This marks the third consecutive month when total transactions exceeded Rs 20 trillion. In June 2024, the total UPI transaction value was Rs 20.07 trillion, while in May it was Rs 20.44 trillion. NPCI data also showed that the average daily transaction value through UPI in July 2024 was Rs 466 million, or about Rs 66,590 crore. Compared with June, the volume of <keyword id="19957378" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPI-transactions" source="keywords">UPI transactions</keyword> grew by 3.95% in July, while the value of transactions increased by 2.84%. In the first four months of the current fiscal year (2024-25), UPI recorded transactions amounting to Rs 80.79 trillion, across approximately 55.66 billion transactions. In 2023-24, total UPI transactions were 131 billion, compared to 84 billion in 2022-23. The monthly bulletin of the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) reported that over the last four years, UPI transactions have seen a ten-fold increase in volume, from 12.5 billion transactions in 2019-20 to 131 billion transactions in 2023-24, which accounts for 80% of the total digital payment volumes. Digital payments in India are hitting fresh highs, as citizens increasingly adopt emerging modes of online transactions. One key emphasis of the Indian government has been to ensure that the benefits of UPI are not limited to India alone; other countries, too, can benefit from it. UPI is India's mobile-based fast payment system, which facilitates customers to make round-the-clock payments instantly using a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) created by the customer. RBI Governor <keyword id="19913110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="keywords">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> highlighted the potential of this feature to expand <keyword id="19994585" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payment" source="keywords">digital payment</keyword> usage across diverse segments of society. "Delegated Payments will enhance financial inclusivity, especially in rural areas where banking access is limited," Das said as per a TOI report. Mohit Bedi, Co-Founder and CBO of Kiwi, a third-party payments application, told ET that this feature could transform how UPI is used by families. "The RBI is essentially making parents the approving authority for transactions, which means UPI can now be used by minors with parental oversight," Bedi said. <h2>Only permissible through <keyword id="20708705" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="savings-accounts" source="keywords">savings accounts</keyword></h2> But can all types of accounts make payments using this new feature? Not really. It is important to note that these delegated transactions will only be permissible through savings accounts, excluding credit lines or credit cards, as industry experts confirm. This focus on savings accounts underscores a commitment to secure and manageable transactions. In addition to delegated payments, the RBI also raised the limit for tax payments via UPI. Previously capped at Rs. 1 lakh per transaction, the new limit is of Rs 5 lakh. With this increase, taxpayers can avoid the cumbersome NEFT process, which requires manual entry of account details, and benefit from the speed and convenience of UPI. This has come down to 20% in FY22. </li></ul> For the first time since 2002 – that’s 20 years – currency in circulation has declined during the Diwali week, says a report by SBI Ecowrap. This is, however, barring a marginal decline seen in the same period in 2009 because of economic slowdown. “Indian economy is undergoing a structural transformation. The innovations in technology have changed the Indian payment system. Over the years, the Indian cash-led economy now has changed to (a) smartphone-led payment economy,” the report said, calling it a remarkable development. This coincides with a record high in terms of value of UPI transactions in October 2022 – 7.3 billion transactions to the tune of ₹12.11 trillion – growing by 73% year-on-year <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/finance/upi-processes-over-7-bn-transactions-in-oct-record-high-since-inception-122110100569_1.html"> in volume terms</a>. Digital transactions turn faster, cheaper and easier Over the years, digital payments have become cheaper and easier and even brought those without bank accounts into the system. Moreover, the interoperable payment systems like UPI, wallets and prepaid payment instruments or PPIs have made the process simpler. As per the report, small retail payments done through UPI/e-wallets account for around 11-12% of the payment industry. Moreover, the share of cash in payment systems has reduced drastically in the last six years. In FY16, the share of currency in circulation (CIC) or cash transactions in payment systems was at 88% - this was prior to the launch of UPI in 2016. This share has come down to 20% in FY22. Moreso, it’s estimated to go down to 11.5% by FY27. Subsequently, the share of digital transactions that have been defined as IMPS, UPI and PPI by the report – have increased substantially. These transactions were at 11.26% in FY16 - and went up to 80.4% in FY22. It is expected to touch 88% in FY27. Clearly, digital transactions are taking the place that cash once held. “The success of the digital journey is primarily due to the relentless push by the Government to formalise and digitalise the economy. Over the years, the system has expanded rapidly with new innovations like QR code, NFC etc and has also seen the swift entry of big tech firms in this industry,” the report said. Less cash to print India has always been an economy with high cash in circulation. It comes next only to Japan and Hong Kong in terms of currency <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/high-cash-in-circulation-aids-current-rbi-policy/articleshow/92641909.cms">in circulation (CIC) as a percentage </a>of GDP, which was at 14.2% in FY22, as per RBI data. As this percentage reduces and the economy is formalised, it can aid the banking system. “In simple terms, it implies that the RBI has to print less of currency given that UPI transactions impact currency in circulation with a lag. This is a win-win for both RBI and government, as it results in saving of seigniorage costs and also a less cash economy,” the report said. Currently, liquidity estimation of the country is impacted by a high amount of cash in the system, which is not easy to account for. Without a currency leakage, this estimation can now see a fundamental reorientation, the report says. “A lower currency in circulation also is akin to a CRR cut for the banking system, as it results in less leakage of deposits and it will impact monetary transmission positively,” the report said. CRR or cash reserve ratio is a specified minimum fraction of the total deposits of customers, which commercial banks have to hold as reserves either in cash or as deposits with the central bank. Apart from encouraging digital payments via UPI, the RBI is also currently working on piloting a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) or the digital rupee. The RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said that it can transform the way the business is done. “It was indeed a landmark moment in the history of money, in the history of currency in our country. Going forward, it will be a landmark achievement so far as the functioning of the entire economy is concerned,” Das said on November 2.

In the report 'How Urban India Pays', Kearney-Amazon Pay said strong adoption of digital payments in <keyword id="21056201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-purchases" source="keywords">online purchases</keyword> has potentially led to a permanent shift in consumer behaviours, fuelling offline adoption as well. While 90 per cent of the respondents of the survey preferred digital payments when making online purchases, affluent consumers lead the way with the highest Degree of Digital Payment Usage (DDPU), tending to use various modes of digital payment for 80 per cent of their transactions. "<keyword id="19955338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="millennials" source="keywords">Millennials</keyword> and Gen X are leading in the adoption of all types of digital payment instruments," it said. "Men and women both use digital payments in about 72 per cent of their transactions, indicating gender parity." The research was based on an online survey of over 6,000 consumers along with more than 1,000 merchants through offline and online methods across 120 cities with representation from various regions, income groups, city categories, age brackets and genders. India has seen a surge in <keyword id="19990771" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce" source="keywords">e-commerce</keyword>, with the market valued at USD 75 billion to USD 80 billion in 2022 and expected to grow at a 21 per cent CAGR until 2030. "In line with India's digital journey, retail digital payments have grown dramatically over the past five years - from USD 300 billion in FY18 to USD 3.6 trillion in FY24. By FY30, they are likely to double to USD 7 trillion," the report said. The Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPI" source="keywords">UPI</keyword>) has been a key driver of this growth, demonstrating a CAGR of 138 per cent in its volumes during FY18-24. Other instruments such as cards and digital wallets are also gaining in popularity, contributing 10 per cent of digital transaction value today. "With such dynamic developments, it is no wonder that India is a global frontrunner in the digital payment landscape, accounting for a stellar 46 per cent of the global digital transaction volumes in 2022," it said. Digital payments have penetrated small towns, with respondents in these areas highlighting that 65 per cent of their transactions are digital, while respondents in larger cities cited this ratio to be 75 per cent. "There is a strong correlation between a city's average DDPU and its retail potential, as measured by the Kearney India Retail Index, with the top six metros displaying both high DDPU and high retail potential," the report said. DDPU surpasses retail potential in some cities such as Lucknow, Patna, Bhopal, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Indore, Ahmedabad and Pune, which have a high DDPU nearly matching that of larger metropolitan cities despite having a lower retail potential than the top six metros. The report said co-branded credit cards are gaining momentum. "Emerging methods such as buy now, pay later (BNPL), wearable payments and voice assistant-based payments are also starting to make inroads." Digital modes of payment constitute around 69 per cent of the total transaction volumes for the Indian merchants that were surveyed. Even street vendors such as paan shops, fruit and flower sellers, food stalls, and kirana stores are joining the digital payment brigade. "Challenges for merchant adoption mirror consumer concerns, emphasizing issues of financial fraud, limited connectivity and trust," it said. The report said the next wave of growth in digital payments will be fueled by increasing penetration in segments with lower DDPU, such as consumers in lower-income groups and smaller towns, along with enhancing the value of spending via digital modes of payment in the higher DDPU segments by addressing their concerns. "All key stakeholders across the digital payments' ecosystem, including payment providers, the government, and value-added services players, will need to play a part in expanding digital payment adoption," it said. The focus areas should be empowering communities with financial education by launching target programmes to boost awareness of digital payments and new methods such as UPI Lite and UPI Lite X, especially for aspiring consumer segments, women in small towns, and street commerce merchants, to encourage higher adoption. Also, there is a need to create user-friendly consumer journeys by streamlining documentation and know-your-customer (<keyword id="19910870" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kyc" source="keywords">KYC</keyword>) processes, optimising user interfaces, and establishing responsive customer complaint resolution mechanisms, it said adding also there is a need to enhance digital infrastructure by addressing systems and network issues and exploring innovations such as UPI Lite X for areas with limited internet. Also, the risk of fraud has to be minimised and access to credit-based payment methods expanded by using alternate data for underwriting risk, developing innovative credit products and promoting credit education for financial health. "These areas can help India overcome challenges in the digital payment ecosystem by fostering a more inclusive, secure, and user-friendly environment, thereby enhancing the adoption of digital payments among consumers and merchants in India," it added.

India to see retail digital payments to double to USD 7 tn by 2030: Report

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) registered a record 6.57 billion (657 crore) transactions worth ₹10.72 lakh crore in August, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data showed on Thursday. The growth in UPI volumes is up almost 100% (year-on-year) and amounts transacted grew by 75% YoY in the month of August. "With the acceptance of card payments via UPI the transaction volumes are bound to grow strongly and the average value per transaction too will increase. Through this growth, the NPCI systems have been robust and have rendered uptime that stands among the best in the payments industry. NPCI is on track to achieve their vision of 1 billion transactions per day," said Rajesh Mirjankar MD and CEO, Kiya.ai. The country crossed 6 billion transactions for the first time last month, logging 6.28 billion transactions worth Rs 10.62 lakh crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month hailed the achievement of <keyword id="4052276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi-transactions" source="Orion">UPI transactions</keyword> crossing 6 billion in July -- the highest ever since its launch six years back. "This is an outstanding accomplishment. It indicates the collective resolve of the people of India to embrace new technologies and make the economy cleaner. Digital payments were particularly helpful during the COVID-19 pandemic," Modi had said in a tweet. In FY22, UPI processed more than 46 billion transactions amounting to over ₹84.17 trillion, thus breaching the $1 trillion mark. UPI's target is to process a billion transactions a day in the next five years. The UPI facility was launched on April 11, 2016, by then Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan. Recently, the NPCI mandated that all UPI-based applications obtain consumers' prior authorisation before recording their location. Any time a client gives permission to record their location, the permission must be properly communicated to the UPI, else the company will take stern action. This rule must be followed by all members by December 1 and applies to domestic UPI transactions between individuals. "UPI continues to penetrate further in the payment ecosystem as reflected by an increase in the number of UPI transactions by approx 5 per cent (on-month) and value of such transactions increasing by approx one per cent (month-on-month). However, payment through credit cards has a different result – one which gives the user a free grace period to pay or go for an instalment option. This growth can be attributed to the widespread acceptance of UPI for various personal and payment transactions, both from the user's perspective and that of merchants. Furthermore, UPI has made substantial inroads into rural India. Also in 2022, the AePS recorded a significant volume of over 2.63 billion transactions with a total value of ₹3.42 lakh crore. Unlike their uppity cousins (credit cards), debit cards have been losing out on transaction value and volume. But all’s not lost for these ubiquitous cards. People seem to ‘still’ rely on debit cards for large-sized purchases, as per data by <keyword id="20219639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="worldline" source="keywords">Worldline</keyword>’s <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> Digital Payments Report. The average ticket size (ATS) of debit cards grew by 24% year-on-year to ₹2,642 in the second half of 2023, the data says. In fact, most of the growth seen in the cards business, which also includes credit and prepaid cards, was driven by debit cards. The number of debit cards in circulation is 960.8 million, which showed a miniscule growth of 2% YoY. “The growth in debit card ATS suggests that while debit card transactions volume fell, there was still a significant population that used debit cards for their purchases and that ensured that transactions value did not fall parallelly,” says Worldline. Debit card volumes are now a fraction of UPI transactions at 1.15 billion in H2 in 2023 — a drop of 34% YoY. Debit card transaction value at ₹3.02 lakh crore also saw a fall of 16%. In India, UPI rules On the other hand, UPI’s ATS also fell, but that too is a sign of growth, as people seem to use it even for small transactions. Its ATS declined 8% YoY to ₹1,515 from ₹1,648. “The ATS persistently follows a downward trend, indicating a more profound integration of UPI, particularly in smaller or micro-transactions. This decline is predominantly propelled by the surge in person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions,” said Worldline. This decline, however, is related to an extensive growth in UPI transactions. As of the second half of 2023, as much as ₹99.68 lakh crore flowed via phones —exhibiting a whopping 44% surge. The volumes grew 56% YoY to 65.77 billion in H2 in 2023. Between July 2022 and December 2023, there was a notable increase in the payment acceptance infrastructure channels. Point of Sale (PoS) terminals expanded by 26%, dominated by private sector banks with a 73% market share. “This trend underscores users' growing confidence and familiarity with smartphone-based payment methods. The proliferation of Point of Sale terminals has reached unprecedented levels, concurrent with the ascendance of mobile payments as a dominant transaction avenue,” said <keyword id="21180241" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ramesh-narasimhan" source="keywords">Ramesh Narasimhan</keyword>, CEO- India, Worldline. While UPI is rising fast ahead of debit cards, credit cards tell another story of growth. Not only did credit card issuances rise a strong 21%, but credit card transaction value rose 11% to ₹9.39 lakh crore. Mumbai, <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> on Friday said NPCI has been asked to examine the possibility of it becoming a third party application provider for continued <keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi" source="keywords">UPI</keyword> operations of the Paytm app. The central bank has barred <keyword id="19907220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-payments-bank" source="keywords">Paytm Payments Bank</keyword> from accepting further credits into its customer accounts and wallets after March 15, 2024. With an aim to ensure seamless digital payments by UPI customers using '@paytm' handle operated by the Paytm Payments Bank, <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> said it has asked the <keyword id="19907219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-payments-corporation-of-india" source="keywords">National Payments Corporation of India</keyword> (NPCI) to examine the request to become a Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP) for UPI channel for continued UPI operation of the Paytm app. The request has been made by One97 Communication Ltd (OCL), which owns the Paytm brand, RBI said in a statement. For seamless migration of '@paytm' handle to other banks, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said NPCI may facilitate certification of 4-5 banks as Payment Service Provider (PSP) Banks with demonstrated capabilities to process high volume UPI transactions.
