Overall passenger vehicle dispatches to dealers rose to 3,59,228 units last month from 3,28,376 units in August 2022. Utility vehicle sales increased 34% year-on-year to 1,81,825 units. Passenger car dispatches on the other hand declined 10% to 1,20,031 units from 1,33,477 units in August 2022. Van wholesales also dipped to 11,859 units from 12,236 units. "Last month saw the highest ever August month sales for passenger vehicles and three-wheelers," Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) President <keyword id="230167" type="General" weightage="40" keywordseo="Vinod-Aggarwal" source="Orion">Vinod Aggarwal</keyword> said in a statement. Three-wheeler sales rose to 64,763 units in August as against 38,369 units in the same month last year. Two-wheeler dispatches increased to 15,66,594 units from 15,57,429 units. "<keyword id="163191" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="two-wheeler-sales" source="Orion">Two-wheeler sales</keyword> remained at levels similar to a year ago," Aggarwal said adding that the industry also witnessed a good growth in the commercial vehicle segment in August 2023. "Based on the performance of last month, we are even more optimistic for demand to pick up during the festive season, enabled by positive economic outlook and the revival of monsoon after a deficit in August," Aggarwal said. In the passenger vehicle segment, Maruti Suzuki India saw an increase of 16% in dispatches to dealers at 1,56,114 units from 1,34,166 units in August 2022. Rival Hyundai Motor India dispatched 53,830 units to dealers as against 49,510 units in the same month last year.

<keyword id="20163833" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Passenger-vehicle" source="keywords">Passenger vehicle</keyword> wholesales in India declined 2.5 per cent year-on-year to 3,41,510 units in July, impacted by high base effect as well as companies reducing vehicle dispatches to dealers amid moderation in demand. The overall passenger vehicle (PV) dispatches from companies to dealers stood at 3,50,355 units in July 2023, <keyword id="20081560" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="automobile-industry" source="keywords">automobile industry</keyword> body <keyword id="20185536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIAM" source="keywords">SIAM</keyword> said on Wednesday. <keyword id="21653561" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="utility-vehicles" source="keywords">Utility vehicles</keyword> continued to drive sales of PVs, clocking 1,88,217 units last month, as against 1,80,831 units in July 2023, a growth of 4.1 per cent, as per the data issued by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Passenger cars, however, recorded a drop of 12 per cent at 96,652 units, as against 1,09,859 units in the same month last year. Industry observers pointed out that after high-paced growth witnessed in the past couple of years, the industry is witnessing moderation in demand. Besides, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) also undertook stock corrections in July to reduce inventory in the network. As per SIAM data, <keyword id="22783202" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="two-wheeler-wholesales" source="keywords">two-wheeler wholesales</keyword> grew by 12.5 per cent to 14,41,694 units last month, as compared to 12,82,054 units in July 2023. <keyword id="20067449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="motorcycles" source="keywords">Motorcycles</keyword> wholesales were up 4.1 per cent at 8,50,489 units in July 2024, as against 8,17,206 units in the year-ago month, SIAM said. Scooters sales were up 29.2 per cent at 5,53,642 units last month, as against 4,28,640 units in the year-ago period. Three-wheeler wholesales also rose 5.1 per cent to 59,073 units from 56,204 units in July last year. "Though three-wheeler and two-wheeler segments are performing well, there has been some de-growth of passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles in July 2024, compared to July 2023," SIAM President Vinod Aggarwal said in a statement. He, however, said the above average rainfall coupled with upcoming festive season is likely to again propel growth in the short term. "In addition, enabling budget announcements which emphasise on overall economic growth with fiscal support for infrastructure and rural sector should augur well for the auto sector in the medium-term," Aggarwal said.

Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales dips 2.5% at 3,41,510 units in July: SIAM

The preference of customers has changed, thanks to introduction of <keyword id="1133722" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Compact-SUVs">compact SUVs</keyword>, equipped with better dynamics and drivability. 
 
The compact SUVs, which are priced almost at the same level of sedans, have changed the trend and now have become a preference among most of the car buyers. 
 
This has also triggered a competition as now utility segment accounts for one in every four passenger vehicles sold. 
 One of the quick adapters of this trend was <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, which has grabbed a significant market share, giving tough competition to Mahindra &amp; Mahindra based on sales in the first seven months of this fiscal year. 
 
Since last three months, Maruti is emerging as the winner in the utility segment. 
 
As per the reports, sales of utility vehicles went up around 37% to 4,44,048 units between April and October, compared with 3,24,460 units a year earlier when the segment accounted for one in five passenger vehicles sold in the Indian market. 
 
"The future of compact SUV is very bright, I expect the trend to continue. For OEMs (automakers) to be relevant in this segment, regular launches with better features are the keys to succeed," Abdul Majeed, automobile expert and partner at Price Waterhouse, told ET. 
 
Mahindra, which was the leader in the utility segment, seems to be withering as its market share slipped to 30% from 36% in the April-October period, even as Maruti increased its share to 25% from 14%, helped primarily by the success of the Vitara Brezza. Mahindra's new products the like TUV300 and KUV100 did not do that well. 
 "Interestingly, passenger car OEMs like Maruti and <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> are able to gain strong footing in the UV segment due to changing preference towards compact UVs. Whereas, traditional UV OEMs like <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> and M&amp;M, having presence in chassis built rugged UVs, witnessed market erosion due to relative underperformance of the larger UV segment. Thanks to strong response to compact UVs, the share of petrol vehicle is likely to increase in the medium term," Subrata Ray, senior group vice president at ratings firm ICRA, told ET.

"Every day we're seeing Marines come up with new ideas on how to use the truck."

New Delhi, May 5 () Force Motors on Tuesday said its total sales stood at 66 units in April amid zero production on account of the nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19. Domestic sales of small commercial vehicles (SCV) and light commercial vehicles (LCV) were at zero units but sales of utility vehicles, sports utility vehicles and tractor were at 46 units last month, Force Motors said in a regulatory filing. Exports of SCV and LCV during the month stood at 20 units, but those of UV, SUV and tractors were at zero units, it added. Skoda Auto Volkswagen India on Tuesday said it will suspend production at its <keyword id="143605" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chakan-plant">Chakan plant</keyword> in Pune for a month from mid-December to mid-January in order to upgrade the facility for new range of products, according to sources. The company -- formerly known as Volkswagen India -- had earlier suspended production for a month from middle of October to mid-November. When contacted, the company spokesperson said it is taking the step to prepare for next generation of products within the INDIA 2.0 project. "Several upgrades are in progress at our facilities to accommodate changes in the production lines for MQB A0 IN platform. We are systematically planning our non-production days to sustainably meet our customer deliveries without any delay," the spokesperson said when asked about the suspension of work at the plant. While the spokesperson did not confirm the period of closure, industry sources confirmed the suspension of production from mid-December to align production in preparation of the new range of products. Earlier this year, <keyword id="166267" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Volkswagen-Group">Volkswagen Group</keyword> India had received regulatory and statutory approvals to merge its three passenger car subsidiaries in the country into one entity which would be referred to as Skoda Auto Volkswagen India. The merged entity, which includes Volkswagen India, Volkswagen Group Sales India and Skoda Auto India, is led by Gurpratap Boparai. The new company with a strong brand portfolio -- Skoda Auto, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Lamborghini -- is envisioned to serve across market segments and budgets. However, the group has been struggling to make its mark in the Indian mass market segment. In April-October period this year, Volkswagen India clocked sales of just 17,733 units, down 17.01 per cent from the year-ago period. The Pune-headquartered company operates two production facilities in Pune and Aurangabad, and has regional offices in Mumbai, New Delhi and other locations across the country. In July 2018, the Volkswagen Group announced investments of around EUR 1 billion as part of the India 2.0 project. In January this year, the company opened a new technology centre in Pune to develop vehicles based on the localised MQB-A0-IN subcompact platform, tailored to the requirements of local customers. As part of fresh model introduction strategy in the country, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India plans to drive in a mid-size SUV model which would be sold from both Skoda and Volkswagen sales outlets.
