The pandemic is prompting professionals in the country to rethink their career paths with many looking at switching industries as well as upskilling themselves to advance in their careers, according to a survey commissioned by <keyword id="6354743" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amazon-india" source="Orion">Amazon India</keyword>. The e-commerce major commissioned a survey to gauge the pulse of the impact of COVID-19 on jobs and future career plans among <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>n professionals. The survey was conducted by Morning Consult in August and covered 1,000 professionals across India. About 59 percent of the respondents said they were actively searching for a <keyword id="6355569" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="job" source="Orion">job</keyword>. More than one in three (35 percent) respondents said they saw their pay cut as a result of COVID-19, while 68 percent said they are looking to switch industries as a result of COVID-19. One in three (33 percent) respondents said they are looking for a new job right now where "they can do more meaningful work". The survey found 51 per cent of the Indian job-seeking adults were interested in pursuing opportunities in industries they do not have experience in. About 55 per cent said compensation is a major factor they look for when applying for a job. Job security is also a major priority for 56 per cent of Indian professionals following the pandemic. "For half of Indian professionals (49 per cent), opportunities that will help them learn and develop is a high priority when considering a job. For 47 per cent of Indian professionals, having a safe workplace environment is a high priority when considering a job," the survey said. Interestingly, 75 per cent of respondents said they are concerned their current set of skills will become outdated in five years. About 90 per cent said they are interested in learning new and transferable career skills, and 74 per cent said this interest was a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. "The study underlines the changing concerns, aspirations and interests of Indian job seekers, particularly brought in by the COVID-19 pandemic. Professionals are looking at broadening the industries and skillsets to stay relevant in the changing job market," Amazon India said in a statement on Sunday. In terms of skill sets, 45 per cent said they believe technical and digital skills are essential for career advancement; and around 38 per cent believe marketing skills are important for career advancement. About 76 per cent said they are already given support through additional training offered by their employers and 93 per cent of them have already utilised this training. About 97 per cent said they would like more job training to be offered. Amazon, which has committed to creating 20 lakh direct and indirect jobs in India by 2025, recently announced 8,000 direct job openings across 35 cities in the country, spread across consumer, corporate, technology, customer service, and operations roles. Amazon India is also hosting its first-ever Career Day in India on September 16. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is seeking new powers that would allow Canberra to dictate terms to companies like Apple and Google over how they operate their mobile wallets and how they cooperate with local financial institutions, according to <a href="https://www.afr.com/companies/financial-services/treasurer-to-force-apple-into-line-20210829-p58mui">The Australian Financial Review (AFR)</a>. The move would help consolidate power over payments in Canberra, effectively wresting control from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). It would enable Treasury to create new rules and force tech companies to comply with them. “Ultimately, if we do nothing to reform the current framework, it will be Silicon Valley alone that determines the future of our payments system, a critical piece of our economic infrastructure,” Frydenberg told the AFR. It comes as policymakers increasingly scrutinise the outsized influence of tech platforms in Australia which are often subject to different regulations. The campaign is spearheaded by a parliamentary commission into ‘Mobile payment and digital wallet financial services’. Late last month, CBA boss Matt Comyn told the Committee that it was “cause for concern” that Apple controlled 80% of the digital wallet payments market, calling for greater local regulation of the $US2 trillion company. At the heart of the feud is the near-field communication (NFC) chip in Apple phones, the technology that enables iPhone users to ‘tap and go’. Without access to the chip, banks are forced to pay a fee to Apple every time a mobile payment is made via the iPhone’s mobile wallet. As mobile payments represent <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/australia-debit-cards-apple-pay-afterpay-payments-retail-2019-11">a growing piece of the payments market</a>, it is an arrangement that has frustrated banking incumbents. Apple has <a href="https://www.smh.com.au/business/banking-and-finance/misleading-apple-hits-back-at-cba-s-matt-comyn-in-payments-stoush-20210827-p58mh5.html">fired back</a>, claiming in a Committee submission that Comyn’s comments deliberately mischaracterise Apple’s business in a bid to squeeze out competitors. “Central to some banks’ advocacy for open access to NFC is the pursuit of an anti-competitive model that’s detrimental to the customer experience, and an opposition to fair and reasonable fees,” it wrote. Similarly Google wields significant influence in the payments sector via its own eponymous wallet. Further reform will be guided by <a href="https://www.afr.com/companies/financial-services/treasury-scrutiny-on-payments-regulation-welcomed-by-disrupters-20201127-p56ifw">the Payments System Review</a>, which has made 15 recommendations currently being assessed by the Morrison government. Significantly, the Review did not pull any punches when it came to criticising the RBA and other regulators’ lack of intervention in the market, including its hands-off approach to the buy now, pay later (BNPL) space. The conclusions open the doors for a more proactive approach, with Canberra apparently thinking it is best placed to spearhead such an effort. It follows a range of recent battles to curtail the influence of Silicon Valley. Indian consumer electronics brand boAt used to make all its products in China, but the pandemic gave the New Delhi-based startup a rude wake-up call. Founder Aman Gupta had to set up alternative factories in other countries. Eighteen months later 9% of boAt’s manufacturing happens in India. India’s recently unveiled production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme is attractive, but not enough for the firm to make India its biggest production hub yet. China continues to make 90% of its production bulk, while the latest Vietnam market is adding another 1%. The company’s products were completely made in China until February 2020. In just about 5 years, the startup, whose last <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/funding/qualcomm-ventures-invests-in-boat-at-estimated-valuation-of-rs-2200-crore/articleshow/82103740.cms">reported</a> valuation was ₹2,200 crore (about $300million), has quickly risen to capture nearly 30% market share in the audio segment in India ⁠— its earphones, in particular, ⁠have been popular ⁠— and nearly a third of the smart watch segment, where it competes with the likes of Samsung and Apple. <div type="image" title="INTERVIEW: This Indian challenger to Apple and Samsung explains why it chose India and Vietnam to make a bulk of its products" msid="85894605" hostid="261"></div> boAt’s chief executive (CEO) Vivek Gambhir, in a conversation with Business Insider, highlighted that it is currently manufacturing about 15 of its products in India with the help of local partners. It aims to manufacture 30-40% of its production volume in the home market, by 2024. The target could have been achieved sooner if conditions in the Indian electronics manufacturing hub were slightly better. India currently has 20% manufacturing disability compared to China and 12% manufacturing disability versus Vietnam. A manufacturing disability is defined as the difference, in percentage, in the selling price of a product and the manufacturing price. This is why boAt chose Vietnam as its second market. By 2024, the company expects the Southeast Asian country to make up for 10% of its production. Together, India and Vietnam will manufacture around 50% of boAt’s products, while China will add another 50%. boAt is not the only one one taking notice of Vietnam. The country’s rise as a major manufacturing hub for international exports in the last decade can be described as meteoric. South Korea-based electronics giant Samsung has one of its largest facilities outside its home country in Vietnam. The company assembles half of its global handsets in Vietnam and has benefited after the US-China trade war. However, as Gambhir explained, the cost of manufacturing in India has to be more competitive than it is right now. He added that while Vietnam is a better strategic location for now, compared to India, they want to be a leader in the Make-in-India campaign over the next few years. Challenges ahead of boAt to makes its Make-in-India desire a success According to the Indian Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) Disability Identification<a href="https://home.jeita.or.jp/iad/pdf/IESA/IESA-EY%20-%20Indian%20ESDM%20Disability%20Identification%20Report%20-%20Executive%20Summary.pdf"> Study</a>, the electronic products made in India could be less competitive anywhere between 7% and 26%, depending on the nature of the product. But cost is not the only factor. The recently unveiled production-linked incentives in India, along with the import duty hikes, will bring down costs, Purnendu Kumar, practice leader of consumer and retail at consultancy Praxis Global Alliance, told Business Insider. Even if the cost is brought down, the ecosystem is yet to mature. “We are working with about five plus local partners [in India], but there's a certain amount of, you know, hand holding required to be able to actually work with them and educate them in terms of our products getting manufactured,” he added. Therefore, Vietnam is higher up the ladder for boAt at the moment, especially due to “high quality manufacturing opportunities”. The free trade agreement between India and the Southeast Asian country is another boon that reduces imports and exports barriers among the two nations. As for boAt, India will continue to be its research and development (R&amp;D) hub. It has set up a R&amp;D centre in Bengaluru earlier this year, in addition to its existing R&amp;D unit. The company also hired 30 employees in both these labs during the pandemic.
