The <keyword id="10099318" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ibm-big-data">IBM big data</keyword> platform helps businesses address the "full spectrum" of big data business challenges. BM Services implements data transformation with open technologies to propel Vodafone Idea's hybrid cloud strategy. Vodafone Idea has a need for large scale data transformation with a focus on architecture modernisation, open-source adoption and using predictive analytics for data modernisation. By partnering on this implementation, IBM is helping VIL transform the way data is optimised and delivered to partners, employees and internal systems. Fragmented, siloed data can now be streamlined for seamless data availability, the tech giant said. VIL will also be able to combine insights from the Big Data Platform and better leverage cloud native technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance revenues, reduce costs and elevate customer experiences, IBM said. "The modernised and future-ready data platform is helping VIL get daily actionable insights to make strategic and operational level decisions effectively," Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India/South Asia, said in a statement. "IBM and VIL team worked together in challenging times of COVID-19 lockdown to seamlessly execute a complex and enterprise-wide deployment remotely," he said. Currently, insights derived from the data are leveraged for management dashboards, campaign management, network analytics, usage traffic analysis, product analysis, amongst others. Vodafone Idea said that the deployment will help millions of its customers with customised and faster service launches. "Along with IBM we have implemented many first-of-kind projects and the big data and analytics engagement is one such initiative," said Vishant Vora, Chief Technology Officer, Vodafone Idea Limited. "The open source approach has helped us in modernising infrastructure and network experience, helping our people and partners in quicker business decision making." IBM last week announced that it will separate its managed infrastructure services unit of its global technology services division into a new public company. The yet to be named new company is currently codenamed "NewCo". The multi-million dollar deal could also give Big Blue a much-needed boost in an arena where it's struggling to catch up with more dominant rivals: cloud computing.IBM will help Vodafone Idea build a hybrid cloud network with AI capabilities to better serve the telecom company's roughly 400 million customers, the tech giant said Friday. Under the agreement, Vodafone Idea would be able to build "a more agile platform" by leveraging IBM's artificial intelligence automation and hybrid cloud technology, Steve Canepa, general manager of the company's media and entertainment team, told Business Insider."This is a strategic transformation of their architecture to allow them to become more efficient in getting their work done," he added.<h2>IBM's struggle in cloud</h2>It's an important win for Big Blue. While historically dominant powerhouse in corporate technology, IBM has lagged rivals in the important and fast-growing cloud computing services market. The public cloud services market, with total vendor revenue of $95 billion in the second half of 2018, is dominated by Amazon Web Services, with 12.2% market share and Microsoft, with 10.2%, followed by Salesforce, with 6.8%, Oracle, 3.5%, and Google, with 3.2%, according to analyst firm IDC. IBM is in 6th place, with 2.75%, by IDC's reckoning. "They did not invest early enough," IDC analyst Deepak Mohan told Business Insider. "It took time for them to get their message right."But IBM launched a cloud offensive recently by touting a hybrid strategy that enables companies to run their networks across both a public cloud and a private data center. Earlier this year, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ibm-ceo-ginni-rometty-hybrid-computing-2019-1">IBM CEO Ginni Rometty predicted</a> the company will become the biggest player in the hybrid computing market, which she projected will eventually be worth $1 trillion - a key reason, she says, for the company's big $34 billion purchase of software company Red Hat. The Vodafone Idea deal underscored this new cloud push, which also highlights a key component of IBM's hybrid cloud strategy: Watson, IBM's AI technology. Earlier this year, IBM announced the wider deployment of its AI offering with Watson Anywhere, which allows for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ibms-watson-anywhere-strategy-customers-run-ai-on-any-cloud-they-want-2019-2">use of the technology on any cloud a user would like</a>. The India deal also features IBM's Cloud Private offering - software applications that enable companies to manage their networks across both public clouds and private data centers.<h2>Hybrid Cloud Strategy</h2>"Hybrid's certainly been a strong aspect of the new IBM positioning, particularly with the focus on IBM Cloud Private and Watson Anywhere," IDC's Mohan said. "They took a while to consolidate internal assets and offerings, and branding, around a common cloud message. It seems to be slowly coming together now."Analyst Roger Kay of Endpoint Technologies Associates echoed this point, telling Business Insider: "The company is bringing to bear a lot of the capabilities it has been touting as the forward-looking businesses, where it wants to make its mark."Michael Brook, chief technology officer of Pitchly, a content services platform, said the deal highlighted IBM's bid to become more competitive in a tough market."With competition biting at its heels, IBM has had to find ways to differentiate itself in the market, and hybrid cloud and AI are its two biggest bets," he told Business Insider.Still, IBM faces a challenging road ahead in a highly-competitive market, he added: "Underlying it all, IBM is in a very undesirable place. It is building technology first and seeking application of its technology second, and it is heavily reliant on its existing brand to push its business forward."<h2>Telco, tech partnerships</h2>The Vodafone Idea deal also underscores the push toward more partnerships between telcos and tech companies.In January, IBM also unveiled an alliance with Vodafone in which the two companies will collaborate to develop new technologies and services for adapting to AI, 5G and other major technology trends. Vodafone Idea is part of a partnership between Vodafone Group and Aditya Birla Group in India.The alliance underscored the need for telecom companies to forge partnerships to be successful in embracing and maximizing the benefits of cloud computing, according to IDC."Telcos must partner," IDC analysts said in a research note. "This venture fits the blueprint. … Telcos must partner if they want to address the full breadth of cloud services opportunities, combining their networks and access to hyperscale platform providers with partners' infrastructures and additional capabilities. IBM scored a key cloud deal that gives it more credibility in a market that CEO Ginni Rometty believes will be worth $1 trillion

It’s still three months for the telecom major <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> India's $1-billion IT outsourcing contract to expire, and its current tech vendor <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> is fighting a tough battle to hold on to the huge contract. This is because Vodafone is said to be considering some options, including branching out some portions of the contract to other service providers, three people aware of the matter told ET. 
 
One of IBM's largest telecom contracts in Asia, the contract is set to expire in June end, which is why the company is aggressively chasing a renewed contract even if they have to sacrifice some margins. 
 
"Even if <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/it-services/IBM-inks-deal-with-VMWare-tries-to-bolster-cloud-credentials/articleshow/51096444.cms" target="_blank">IBM</a> does retain most of the contract, the renewed deal will come at the cost of margins. They are being forced to fight on price as well," said one of the sources. As of now, Vodafone hands out $190-200 million of annual business to IBM. 
 
When contacted via email, an IBM spokeswoman said that the company "does not comment on rumour and/or speculation nor do we comment on client confidential contracts".

The move comes after Facebook picked up a 9.99% stake in Reliance Jio, India’s leading telecom operator. According to a <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/3f763918-d0b1-4a02-a581-e241753c75eb">report</a> by Financial Times, Google could pick up a 5% stake in Vodafone Idea. The report also adds that the talks are still in a “very early stage”, so the details of the deal could change. The report further adds that Google is also in talks to acquire a stake in Reliance Jio, and that the talks are still ongoing. Vodafone Idea shares surge more than 30% after Google reportedly considers a stake in the debt-laden telco

As soon as Idea Cellular announced news of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/idea-to-merge-with-vodafone-india-time-to-say-hello-to-indias-biggest-telco/articleshow/57728557.cms">forthcoming merger</a> with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/vodafoneindia-just-partnered-with-amazon-prime-video/articleshow/57717680.cms">Vodafone India</a> and <keyword id="2099963" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vodafone-Mobile-Services">Vodafone Mobile Services</keyword> (VMSL), its stocks dipped by 15%. 
 The deal has put Idea's implied enterprise value at $10.8 billion, as against the $12.40 billion valuation for <keyword id="6354923" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vodafone-India">Vodafone India</keyword>. 
 
After the stock fell 14.73%, it stood at Rs 92 on BSE. Earlier, it had risen 14.68% in the early trade and hit a high of Rs 123.75.

In its filing to BSE, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/with-idea-making-incoming-calls-free-national-roaming-willsoon-be-a-matter-of-past/articleshow/57606367.cms">Idea</a> had said that after the deal, its promoters will hold a 26% stake in the resultant entity, while <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> will hold 45.10% after its promoters would transfer a 4.9% stake to Idea promoters for Rs 3,874 crore in cash. Rest of the stock would be for the public.

"We expect the combine entity will have about 40 per cent revenue share. In the process of integration and combining the two big operations, they might lose some revenue market share to Jio or to other incumbents. We estimate about $11-12 billion revenue and Ebitda margins of 28-30 per cent, once these firms combine their operations." Nitin Soni of Fitch Ratings told ET. 
 
Idea also announced that it would issue equity shares to Vodafone India after the scheme of amalgamation with VMSL. This would be equal to 47% of the post-issue paid-up capital of the company on a fully-diluted basis. 
 
The company also said that after the merger, shares issued to Vodafone India in pursuant of the merger of VMSL with the company would stand cancelled.

It means that as much as ₹1,400 crore, about $200 million, was lost in a single day’s trade. On Friday (July 26), Vodafone Idea posted a net loss of ₹4,874 crore, or over $700 million, in the first quarter of the current financial year. “Vodafone Idea’s results disappointed with revenues, EBIDTA (pre-tax profits), and a loss ---all missed estimates,” said a report by CLSA, which retained its ‘Sell’ recommendation. In the long-run Top telecom operators Vodafone and Idea Cellular had merged last year, and these synergies will start paying off in a year. “We are delivering on our stated strategy, although the benefits are not yet visible in our top line. We are well on track to deliver our synergy targets by Q1 of 2020-21. We expect these factors to increasingly contribute to our financial performance going forward,” said Balesh Sharma, CEO Vodafone Idea. But the shareholders were clearly not in the mood to wait so long. The company, in spite of its size, is unable to keep up with competition from Reliance Jio, which has been gaining subscribers at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mukesh-ambani-owned-reliance-vs-vodafone-idea-vs-airtel-vs-bsnl-january-to-april-2019-subscriber-data/articleshow/69928185.cms">Vodafone Idea’s cost</a>. Vodafone Idea has been losing in terms of quantity and quality of subscribers as well. Its average revenue per user rose by a mere 4% to ₹108. Added to that, some of its best paying customers also downtraded which means went in for cheaper plans, leaving it with fewer profits.
