How to help hospitals and healthcare workers fighting the coronavirus

Just a day prior, a new design patent had been&#xa0;published by&#xa0;the United States Patent and Trademark Office - it looks like this:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57574094dd0895a8618b4be6-2400/magicleap1.png" alt="Magic Leap (design patent)" data-mce-source="USPTO"><p class="source"><span>USPTO</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>That was <a href="http://qz.com/701670/this-is-what-a-magic-leap-vr-headset-probably-looks-like/">spotted by Quartz</a>. There are a few other views of the design in the patent, which was originally&#xa0;filed back in May 2015.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57574094dd0895a8618b4be7-999/screen%20shot%202016-06-07%20at%205.27.12%20pm.png" alt="Magic Leap (design patent)" data-mce-source="USPTO"><p class="source"><span>USPTO</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div>This&#xa0;headset looked more like a mix of VR headset and Microsoft's HoloLens than the sunglasses approach we've seen in <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/what-is-magic-leap-2016-4">past Magic Leap patents</a>. But as it turns out, the images in the patent are "not at all representative of what our product will look like," according to Magic Leap's VP of public relations, Andy Fouché.<p>Fouché provided the following statement to Tech Insider regarding the patent's images:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">This is part of our R&amp;D and experience validation, and is not at all representative of what our product will look like. Items that any company patents can be helpful to the entire process, regardless if they end up pursuing that path or not.</p><p>Well that solves that, eh?&#xa0;Pretty definitive.</p><p>Unfortunately, there's still no indication of when Magic Leap plans on releasing its hardware to the public, or what it looks like, or how it will work, or... really anything beyond effusive praise from the handful of folks who've tried it and are allowed to speak about their experience.</p><p>We tried asking Fouché for a description of the headset, of course, and were shot down. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57727b04dd0895c4708b4586-1200/3_here_one_both_colors.jpg" alt="doppler labs here one" data-mce-source="Doppler Labs" /><p class="source"><span>Doppler Labs</span></p></div><p></p></div></div><br />Doppler Labs wants to put a computer in your ear.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The New York-based company on Tuesday introduced the Here One, a more polished version of the </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/here-earbuds-reviewed-in-the-city-2016-4" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here Active Listening earbuds</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that raised $635,000 on </span><a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dopplerlabs/here-active-listening-change-the-way-you-hear-the/" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Kickstarter</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> last year - as well as </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/doppler-labs-raises-17-million-for-here-earbuds-2015-7" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">$17 million</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in funding - and resulted in a waitlist that ran more than 100,000 customers deep. They're <a href="https://hereplus.me/" target="_blank">up for pre-order</a> today for $299, with a full release set for sometime this November. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For those not familiar with the original Here, the core concept behind the Here One remains the same: to augment and mold the sound of the world around you. Though they look like the kind of truly wireless earbuds we've seen from </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.techinsider.io/samsung-gear-iconx-wireless-earbuds-2016-6" target="_blank">Samsung</a>, </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://verve.life/verve-ones-1.html" target="_blank">Motorola</a>, </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">and others in recent months, they're closer to in-ear processors - with internals that company CEO Noah Kraft says are "about as powerful as laptops from 5-10 years ago" - than traditional Bluetooth earphones.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So, if you're walking down a city street, the idea is for you to lessen the sound of passing crowds and screeching cars, </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">without </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">shutting <em>everything</em> out the way a pair of noise-canceling headphones might. If you're at a concert, you could boost the bass and add effects to what's playing, similar to how you'd mess with the EQ settings for music on your phone. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The company claims that it's fine-tuned this sort of selective noise filtering with the Here One, making it so you can amplify or cut out specific sounds - boosting the voice in an office, for instance, while drowning the air conditioner - instead of whole frequency ranges.<br /><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57727b04dd0895c4708b4587-1200/6_here_one_app_showcase.jpg" alt="doppler labs here one" data-mce-source="Doppler Labs" /><p class="source"><span>Doppler Labs</span></p></div><p></p></div></div><br /> </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You need to keep the earbuds tied to their companion app to make all this work, but from there you can customize the filtering yourself, or choose from a number of preset settings made for specific scenarios ("Office," "Airplane," etc.). The hope is that you won't <em>have</em> to do that, though - Doppler Labs says the app will first put you through a two-minute "onboarding procedure" that lets the Here One automatically tune its filters to your ears.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While the original Here buds were intriguing as a concept, the fact that they couldn't actually play music limited their appeal. The Here One </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">can</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> work like any other pair of wireless in-ear headphones, which should greatly help their chances. Whether or not their sound will compare to other $300 earphones remains to be seen, though.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Still, Doppler Labs is adamant that the Here One's noise processing puts the earbuds in their own category. Beyond the selective filtering noted above, the company says you'll also be able to "layer" sounds over whatever you're hearing. Kraft gives the example of being at a baseball game and having real-time commentary draped over the top, or making it so you can hear cars while you're streaming music on a bike ride.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You won't be able to mix anything like that with the adaptive filters come November, but Kraft says the company is working with "several partners" to expand upon the idea in the future.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The problem that might limit all of this is a familiar one: battery life. The company says the earbuds will get about 5-6 hours on average, with that going down to 3-4 through continuous streaming. The case that holds them doubles as a charger, and is said to provide two full charges. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In any case, it's clear that Doppler Labs has put some thought into the idea of creating a wearable that people could feasibly use all day long. The industry is old-hundreds of years old, in fact.  </span></p><p><span>And in today's world where we enjoy leading-edge digital technology like virtual reality and artificial intelligence undreamt of even a few generations ago, it's hard to imagine how chemistry, with discoveries going back multiple decades, can still be relevant.  But it is.</span></p><p><span>Rapid urbanization and an emerging middle class in developing markets means there is growing demand for air conditioners, refrigerators, quality paints, automobiles-all important markers of middle class living.  None of those conveniences would be possible without chemistry.  </span></p><p><span>Equally, in developed economies, people have come to demand that consumer goods like wearable technology and personal electronic devices be more durable, comfortable, and high performing.  Chemistry-based ingredients make that happen.</span></p><p><span>Let's take a closer look at just one of those modern conveniences related to the rising demand across the globe for healthy foods.  Moving fresh produce from farms to tables requires refrigeration, not just in stores and homes, but all along the food distribution chain.  </span></p><p><span>The challenge is to provide that cold storage in a sustainable way. Specialty chemicals are materials that are a unique offering for a specific company, often protected by patents or specific know-how and not readily available from other suppliers. For the investor, it's important to find out which products these chemicals are used in and if that market is growing. As </span><span>uniqueness erodes, specialty chemicals tend to evolve into commodity chemicals, as more companies are able to produce them on a large scale.</span><u></u><u></u></p><p><span>For the most part, commodity chemicals are mass-produced for global markets and manufactured by a number of companies.  This is where you will find more industry volatility and flux. However, commodity players can still provide significant value over their competition if they are the low-cost producer, or if they offer a specific value to a customer, such as higher quality or dependable supply. Most importantly, look for companies that supply chemicals that can support a growing, more affluent global population; they're in the best position to deliver shareholder growth over the long haul. </span></p><p><span>The world needs innovative chemical companies-companies that push the boundaries of what chemistry can do to improve the quality of life for billions of people worldwide.  </span></p><p><span>I call that "higher value chemistry," chemistry that supports our changing 21<sup>st</sup> century lives. It's an exciting time for our industry, as well as for anyone looking to invest in something that will help enable sustainable growth with profitable returns. </span><u></u><u></u></p><p><span>In an industry approaching 300 years old, we know that taking the long view reaps rewards. These Are The Killer Apps That Will Make 'The Internet Of Things' Indispensable In Everyday Life

<p>The technology can be used for much more than turning down the temperature in your home or tracking how many calories you've burned today.</p>
<p>It can be utilized to address larger problems involving health care and power consumption, <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/parmyolson/2014/04/17/the-quantified-other-nest-and-fitbit-chase-a-lucrative-side-business/">as Forbes details in a new report</a>.</p>
<p>Nest Labs, for instance, has built a secondary business in working with electric companies to manage power consumption in the homes of some of its users, Forbes reported. Nest has already partnered with utility providers such as Chicago's ComEdison and Southern California's Edison, but striking deals with utilities is still a challenge since Nest is only in less than 1 percent of US households.</p>
<p>These results of these partnerships could allow utilities to reimburse Nest users for lowering their air conditioners on a hot day to relieve some load from the grid, according to Forbes. The advantage of using a smart home thermostat like Nest as opposed to a standard system is that the device would be able to detect movement and learns about your household's activity over time, which could cut down on energy consumption. This, as Forbes notes, is crucial in convincing utilities to partner with Nest.</p>
<p>Nest co-founder Matt Rogers stressed that despite these partnerships, utility companies will never have control over your living room.</p>
<p>"We don't let utilities control the thermostat," he said to Forbes. "We don't share the data with the utility. We won't work with them if they don't agree."</p>
<p>Fitbit, on the other hand, is working with employers to aid in corporate wellness programs. Fitbit sells its devices to thousands of employers, and the data collected from those gadgets may eventually impact group insurance pricing, health insurer Cigna said to Forbes. Fitbit CEO James Park said it's one of the fastest-growing parts of the company's business.</p>
<p>Fitbit's <a href="http://www.fitbit.com/product/corporate-solutions">corporate solutions website </a>advertises its wellness program as a means of decreasing sick days and healthcare costs.</p>
<p>Forbes reports that Jawbone may consider starting a similar program in the future. The company's vice president of product management Travis Bogart told the publication that it will "definitely be about the data as we move forward."</p>
<p>Jawbone could even possibly one-up Fitbit by offering custom analytics software for employers, according to Forbes report.</p>
<p>The idea of your employer watching how active you are may seem invasive for some, but it depends on whether consumers believe less expensive healthcare will be worth sharing that type of information.</p>
<p>It will probably be quite some time before most companies equip their employees with fitness bands and your electricity bill decreases from using Nest in your home. However, the fact that these partnerships are already starting to develop shows that the data obtained by these types of gadgets could even be more valuable than the products themselves.</p>
