 Kashmiri students have boycotted a lunch invite from the central government to express their protest, according to IANS. And, in spite of Modis promise that normalcy will return to the valley during the festival, food and ration shops are open only in certain areas. The same applies to ATMs as well. Nonetheless, the government is trying to ensure that people have round the clock access to basic amenities, like electricity and water, with staff on standby in case there’s a breakdown. Students protest Nearly 250 students at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have stated that they will not be attending the festivities organised at the university’s guest house. Other students in the Kashmir Valley have also stated that they will be staying away from any kind of festivities on campus. Jammu and Kashmir governor, Satya Pal Malik, recently sanctioned ₹1 lakh to organise Eid festivities in the valley. But according to the students at AMU, the money is given to buy their consent. "We take this as an opportunity to reject Delhi's authoritarianism and drama played in Parliament on August 5," they said in a statement. Restrictions and Section 144 The Jammu and Kashmir administration had eased the prohibitory orders in Kashmir Valley for the past few days for people to make purchases for Eid. And, while there have been no reports of violence on Sunday, Section 144 has been reinstated in certain areas. Even in Srinagar, restrictions were reinstated on Sunday afternoon. The <a href="https://twitter.com/PIBHomeAffairs/status/1160500494566977536/photo/2">spokesperson</a> for the Ministry of Home Affairs shared that the central government is trying to make sure that there are enough groceries for the people living in the area. Bakeries, poultry and mutton shops will remain open. Health institutions are also operational and 300 special telephones have been installed for people to get in touch with their relatives. <div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image">Verifone</div></div>SECURITY CONCERNS WILL DRIVE A SURGE IN PAYMENT HARDWARE SALES. The Target data breach that may have affected up to 110 million people has the potential to turn into a massive windfall for payments companies, in particular two large hardware providers, Verifone and Ingenico. The widespread and high-profile breach puts a phenomenal amount of pressure on merchants to make sure they are using updated hardware with strong data security protections.
Here is the bullish case for payments hardware companies following the data breach:
<ul>
<li>Payment card fraud in the United States is out of control and the market is ready for a solution. The U.S. accounts for half of global payment card fraud, but only 27% of global transaction volume. That means that there is a huge gap in the market for new security solutions. This will ultimately lead to point-of-sale upgrades.</li>
<li>Merchants are going to have to upgrade their point-of-sale hardware soon anyway. The major card networks are pushing payments companies to upgrade to EMV or "chip card" compatible points of sales by 2015 and the Target data breach increases the pressure for merchants to make these upgrades sooner rather than later. In the past, merchants have resisted making major hardware upgrades, but companies that do not upgrade will likely see increased costs and liabilities associated with fraudulent transactions.</li>
<li>The market is already rewarding some companies. Over the last 10 days, Verifone shares have seen a 25% price increase, following upgrades from analysts at Jefferies and Co. and J.P. Morgan. Ingenico shares rose about 12.5% since the Target data breach was first announced.</li>
</ul>
The EMV standard is not perfect because it doesn't stop card-not-present fraud and <a href="http://www.bankinfosecurity.com/jones-a-6047/op-1" target="_blank">may actually help to facilitate it</a>, but it's better than what we have in the U.S. now. The card networks, which hold much of the power in the payments industry, want merchants to adopt it. In addition, there isn't a rival solution that's going to be ready for large-scale rollout by the 2015 deadline when merchants are going to be forced to adopt EMV-compatible points of sale. So while the EMV standard may only lead to a modest improvement in security, merchant adoption is inevitable, which means increased sales for hardware providers. EBAY UK IS CREATING A NEW PRODUCT CATEGORY FOR VIRTUAL CURRENCIES. Peer-to-peer sales of virtual currencies like Bitcoin will now be listed under the "Virtual Currency" category in the classified ads section on eBay UK. The new category will be available to eBay UK users who want to buy and sell virtual currency beginning in early February. Users will not be able to buy bitcoins using eBay-owned PayPal, however. The news provides an indicator of eBay's outlook on virtual currencies, which seems positive, if tentative. GOOGLE WALLET LOSES GLOBAL HEAD OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT. Jonathan Weiner is leaving the Google Wallet team to get back to his "entrepreneurial roots," according to an interview with Re/code. Weiner was a founding member of the payments processing company TxVia, which now provides the foundation for much of the Google Wallet product. THE NSA HAS AN EXTENSIVE SPYING PROGRAM FOCUSED ON THE PAYMENTS SPACE. New documents released by whistleblower Edward Snowden reveal that the NSA has a branch called "Follow The Money," which focuses on tracking the flow of international payments, according to German newspaper Der Spiegel. Documents from 2011 show that the NSA had collected 180 million payment records, about 84% of which were credit card transactions. Data targets of the American foreign intelligence agency include large credit card networks like Visa and The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), which enables worldwide financial institutions to send and receive information about financial transactions. SILK ROAD FORFEITS $30 MILLION WORTH OF BITCOIN. Last week, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara announced the forfeiture of 29,655 Bitcoins, valued at around $30 million, which were seized from Silk Road's server. Before the FBI shut down the website in October 2013, Silk Road functioned as an e-commerce platform for illegal goods like drugs and weapons. Silk Road users made purchases with Bitcoin, which kept the transactions relatively anonymous. In addition to the forfeited bitcoins, the government has seized an additional 144,336 bitcoins (~130 million) from computers belonging to Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht. Ulbricht is suing for the return of these bitcoins. We'll keep watching the story to see how the government decides to handle its newly acquired bounty of Bitcoin. PAYMENTS STARTUP BALANCED IS A POTENTIAL ACQUISITION TARGET IN 2014. The San Francisco-based merchant services provider started out working with companies that offer online marketplaces like The Fancy. The company reports processing over $370 million in transactions a year for 440 online marketplaces and crowdfunding platforms. These sorts of payments startups are prime acquisition targets because they create solutions for niche markets that larger payment companies, like PayPal, would like to offer, but would rather not develop in-house. Why The Target Data Breach Is Great News For The Payments Industry

Amid widespread anger and protest over Centre's <keyword id="13558307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agnipath-scheme" source="Orion">Agnipath scheme</keyword>, the <keyword id="6354416" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-army" source="Orion">Indian Army</keyword> on Monday issued notification for the first round of recruitment through the scheme. As per the notification, the registration for the recruitment rallies will start from July. "The registrations will be opened from July onwards by the respective <keyword id="1497108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Army-Recruitment-Offices" source="Orion">Army Recruitment Offices</keyword> (ARO) for <keyword id="14193007" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="agniveer" source="Orion">Agniveer</keyword> General Duty, Agniveer Technical, Agniveer Technical (aviation/ammunition examiner), Agniveer clerk/store keeper technical, Agniveer tradesman (10th pass) and Agniveer Tradesman (8th pass) as per the ARO rally schedule", the <keyword id="15350" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="army" source="Orion">Army</keyword> notification reads. The notification released by the Indian Army broadly outlines terms and conditions of service, eligibility, discharge and other important information related to the scheme. "Agniveers enrolled under the scheme will not be eligible for any kind of Pension and Gratuity", said the notification issued on Monday. The service of the 'Agniveers' will commence from the date of enrolment. They would form a distinct rank in the Army, different from other existing ranks, it said further. The personnel enrolled under this scheme will be required to undergo periodical medical checkups along with physical/written/field tests as per orders, said the notification. The notification has come on a day when several groups called 'Bharat Bandh'. The national capital also witnessed traffic jams as the police have tightened security across the city and its bordering areas. Indian army issues first recruitment notice amid protest

Keeping in view the call for <keyword id="6379373" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharat-bandh" source="Orion">Bharat Bandh</keyword> against the <keyword id="13558307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="agnipath-scheme" source="Orion">Agnipath scheme</keyword> on Monday, Bihar government temporarily suspended the Internet services in 20 districts. The suspension has been already in place in 12 districts since June 17 and the state government decided to add eight more. "The suspension of the Internet services has given positive results and the violent incidents have reduced drastically in Bihar. The agitators and anti-social elements were failing to spread rumours in the state," an official in the Home Department claimed. The Internet services have been suspended in Kaimur, Bhojpur, Aurangabad, Rohtas, Buxar, Nawada, West Champaran, Samastipur, Lakhisarai, Begusarai, Vaishali, Saran, Muzaffarpur, Motihari, Darbhanga, Gaya, Madhubani, Jahanabad, Khagaria and Sheikhpura. The telecom service provider companies have sent text messages to the consumers that the Internet services have been closed for Monday. Though, the consumers of these districts will continue to avail voice calling facility. Meanwhile, the Bihar government has enhanced the securities of BJP offices in 11 districts. The Bihar Police deployed Shasastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel at the offices of BJP to prevent any untoward incidents. The 11 districts are Supaul, Kishanganj, Purnea, Saharsa, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur, Nawgachiya, Banka, Katihar, Madhepura and Motihari. In every BJP office, one platoon comprising 30 personnel has been deployed. Security has also been beefed up for the leaders of the saffron party in Bihar. BJP leaders in the rank of state president Sanjay Jaiswal, Deputy Chief Minister Renu Devi, MLA Dr C.N. Singh, MLA Aruna Devi, MLA Vinay Bihari and others were targeted during the protests against the <keyword id="287364" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="agnipath" source="Orion">Agnipath</keyword> scheme on Thursday and Friday. Following the attack on BJP leaders, the Center has given Y-category security to 10 BJP leaders of Bihar. The <keyword id="6356172" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra-government">Maharashtra government</keyword> on Thursday extended the lockdown-like restrictions in the state till June 1 to break the chain of COVID-19. Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte in an order said the curbs will remain in force till 7 am on June 1. As per the order, additional restrictions include mandatory negative RT-PCR test report for any person entering the state by any mode of transport. The test report will have to be issued within 48 hours before the time of entry into the state. All restrictions enforced as per earlier orders for people arriving from places of "sensitive origin" will be applicable to anyone arriving from any part of the country into the state, the order said. In case of cargo carriers, not more than two people will be allowed to travel in those vehicles. If the carriers are originating from outside <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>,they will be allowed with a negative RT-PCR test report issued within 48 hours before the time of entry into the state and will be valid for seven days, the order said. The lockdown-like curbs were earlier imposed in the state on April 5. The curbs were further tightened on April 15 with Section 144 of the CrPc, banning assembly of five or more people, imposed in theentire state. Maharashtra government extends lockdown till June 1 to curb the spread of COVID-19 cases in the state

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A couple moved from the UK to Portugal to live on an abandoned farm they bought for $103,000.</li><li>John and Tara Newby wanted to build a sustainable, off-grid homestead where they could raise their sons.</li></ul>For John and Tara Newby, moving from the UK to Portugal was a happy accident.What was meant to be a short holiday in Portugal during the pandemic turned into a month-long stay because of a change in travel rules that prevented them from going home without quarantining.With all the extra time on their hands, the couple decided this would be the perfect opportunity for them to look for a house to buy in the countryside.<div type="image" title="A man and a woman standing in front of the abandoned farm that they bought in Portugal." height="809" width="1080" msid="102959976" hostid="261"></div>"We were looking at a lifestyle that would mean we could get out of the UK, spend more time outside, have a better climate, and space for our children to grow a bit more wild and free," Tara, 35, told Insider.They already knew what they wanted: a plot of land that they could turn into a homestead with a house that they could fix up with their own hands.<h2>The couple fell in love with the second property they viewed — an abandoned farm set on three acres of land.</h2>"We walked through the gates, and John's amazing at seeing potential when other people don't — me included," Tara said. "He was like, 'I think we could make this work.' And that was it really."<div type="image" title="An aerial view of the abandoned farm and the buildings that sit on the land. The main house and a second building is visible, while a third, shorter building is hidden by the trees." height="809" width="1080" msid="102959977" hostid="261"></div>The property is located just outside of a small town called Amarante — about 220 miles north of Lisbon — in northern Portugal, and it came with three small stone buildings.The couple — who were living and traveling around in a van at that time — bought the farm for 95,000 euros, or about $103,000.<h2>It took them a long time to decide what they were going to do with the property.</h2>"The first idea was a lifestyle business or a holiday home. We also thought about moving permanently, and when we came back out here, we fell in love with it more and more the longer we spent here," Tara said.Eventually, they decided they wanted to build a sustainable, off-grid homestead where they could raise their children. At that point in time, the couple already had their first son Crusoe, and Tara was pregnant with their second child, Sawyer.<div type="image" title="A man, a woman, and their two children posing for a family selfie." height="951" width="1268" msid="102959978" hostid="261"></div>"We wanted a life where they would have enough space to be outside a lot to explore, learn, and grow," she said.<h2>But there was also a financial aspect in their decision to invest in the property.</h2>The couple sold their house in England when they became van-lifers during the pandemic."Prices over the last few years in Bristol had been going quite crazy, so we had a bunch of equity in that property that's enough to buy the farm here," John, 45, told Insider.<div type="image" title="The exterior of the main house building before renovation." height="1581" width="2109" msid="102959979" hostid="261"></div>But the money was in a bank account, and the interest rates were low back then, he said."It wasn't doing anything for us," John added. "And then we came to Portugal and we thought, well, why not just buy a house here with the money that we've got in the bank?"<h2>The process of buying a home in Portugal is fairly straightforward, John says.</h2>The couple employed a solicitor to assist them with the legal aspect of things and also to check that the property had all of the certifications required for renovations."So Portugal's got a whole bunch of laws to do with the planning commission, and whether or not you can update properties," John said.<h2><div type="image" title="Some of the buildings on the farm." height="1550" width="2067" msid="102959980" hostid="261"></div></h2>While there are many abandoned properties available for sale in the country, not all of them have the necessary paperwork required for buyers to apply for habitation or renovation permits, he added.Property buyers also need a taxpayer identification number, or <a href="https://eportugal.gov.pt/en/servicos/pedir-o-numero-de-identificacao-fiscal-para-pessoa-singular#:~:text=The%20taxpayer%20identification%20number%20or,%2C%20opening%20bank%20accounts%2C%20etc.">NIF number</a>, before they can enter a contract, John said."You need to make sure that you can prove where your finances come from, so that there are no money laundering questions," he said.The couple moved to the farm in May 2022.<h2>Although no one had lived on the property for over 20 years, everything looked like it had been left the way it was on the day the farm was abandoned.</h2><div type="image" title="The previous owners left a lot of furniture and items behind." height="1577" width="2102" msid="102959981" hostid="261"></div>After the Newbys moved in, the first thing they had to do was clear out all the items that the previous occupants had left behind."It literally looked like someone had walked out the door on your average Tuesday and just never came back," Tara said. "There were biscuits in the cupboards, there were clothes in the cupboards, the beds were made up." <div type="image" title="Cobwebs and dust covered every inch of the rooms inside the three buildings." height="1578" width="2104" msid="102959982" hostid="261"></div>She added that they spent about 10 days emptying all the rooms and giving the space a good clean."There was a lot to clear out, a lot to sort through. There were a lot of spiderwebs and dust covering every surface of the home," she added.<h2>Once the cleaning was done, the couple moved on to clearing the land so that they could start growing their own fruit and vegetables.</h2><div type="image" title="The exterior of the tiny house before renovation." height="572" width="763" msid="102959983" hostid="261"></div>Outside, nature had completely taken over large sections of their property, hiding outdoor stone tables and old staircases that the couple didn't even know existed.It was around this time when the couple started to get to know their Portuguese neighbors, and some of them even chipped in to help the couple with their project.<div type="image" title="The tiny house before renovation." height="576" width="768" msid="102959984" hostid="261"></div>"We are so lucky with our neighbors who've just welcomed us with open arms," Tara said. "Our Portuguese neighbors are unbelievably generous with their warmth, their time, and their advice."Their neighbors have also stepped in to help the couple navigate administrative matters."If we've needed to get certain bits of paperwork, they've been able to help us with that, because where we live, very few people speak English," she added. "They've literally scooped us up. They've helped us with all the things that would make living here really difficult." <h2>The couple worked on the property for three months, before they returned to the UK to prepare for the birth of their second son, Sawyer. </h2><div type="image" title="The exterior of the main house during renovation." height="753" width="1004" msid="102959985" hostid="261"></div>Tara gave birth to Sawyer in September 2022, and the family of four returned to Portugal just a month later. It's a really different feel from the UK and from other places in the world, and it's something that we really love about being here," Tara said.Even though each day has its own challenges — be it a renovation problem or the stress of raising two young children alone in a foreign country — the couple says they're glad to be able to have this lifestyle."Everything that we had expected and hoped for is happening. The interview has been edited for clarity and length.What inspired you to dedicate your career to civil rights?When I was in the fourth grade, we integrated the schools in my small town of Lumberton, North Carolina—a very conservative town. They would bus the little Black children across the tracks to the white section of town in North Lumberton. They had new schools, new facilities, new everything, from books to technology.I remember coming home on the bus one day back to the Black section of town. As we crossed the tracks, I saw all the dilapidated buildings, all the houses boarded up and the cars broken down. And I saw my old elementary school and the poor condition it was in. I just kept thinking, "I wonder why they have everything so good, and we have everything so rough."My mother told me the reason we got to go to the new school with the new books was because of Brown v. Board of Education and attorney Thurgood Marshall. My law partner and I turned down all our job offers and set up our own shop, because we wanted to do law that made a difference in our community. We were two young Black lawyers, and we took anything that came through the door. We started going to court and got good at what we did, and we got the reputation that we'd fight anybody.So people started coming to us. We were doing criminal law, family wills and estates, everything. Criminal law was very interesting because Black people are disproportionately targeted by the prison industrial complex. We got real good at convincing juries about reasonable doubt and walking Black people out of the courtroom, versus them going out through the back in handcuffs.That's part of what I do today. You fight to explain to juries to give consideration to Black people too: Don't write us off as guilty before we're proven innocent. It should be innocent before proven guilty. I believe in the romantic notion of "liberty and justice for all,"even though I might be one of the few people in the courtroom who still believes it.In the documentary, you call the George Floyd case one of the seminal cases in civil rights. Why was that the case that seemed to spark this global movement, when there are countless videos of people killed by police?I believe everything in my career led me to George Floyd, because I'd been battling police abuse of Black and brown people for decades. Whether it was the boot camp case, where 14-year-old Martin Anderson was killed; <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-minute-by-minute-timeline-of-everything-thats-known-about-the-trayvon-martingeorge-zimmerman-shooting-2012-6">Trayvon Martin</a>, the 17-year-old who was killed by police; 18-year-old <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/timeline-of-the-day-michael-brown-was-shot-2014-8">Michael Brown</a> in Ferguson; or the 13 Black women who were raped in Oklahoma City by a white police officer—I fought all those battles over those decades.But now we have this case, George Floyd, that was the most-watched documentary of torture in the world. The torture was a result of the excessive force of police officers on a Black person. And I said, this is my opportunity to show the world all the stuff we've been saying for years. You get to see with your own eyes. George Floyd was such a landmark case because it was so widely watched by the world.<div type="image" title="Attorney Ben Crump joins the family of George Floyd for a press conference after the sentencing of Derek Chauvin" height="4267" width="5690" msid="92290293" hostid="261"></div>You quote Thurgood Marshall in the documentary, saying, "do not argue what is legal, argue what is right." So much of our understanding of the law today, and the way that major Supreme Court decisions are made, is based on a close reading of the Constitution. However, the Constitution was not created with Black and brown people in mind. Does this teaching of the law affect who is able to find justice?Absolutely. They try to pin us in a hole and say you have to base everything on legal precedent. Well, if that were true, a lot of us would still be slaves, because the legal precedent in America established by the Supreme Court of the United States was that slavery was, in fact, legal. I heard somebody say, "Just because it's lawful, doesn't make it not awful." And I think that is true. Many of the laws we look at today are just God-awful laws. Sometimes you'll win battles, and the Court will try to take them back.But Justice Marshall told us, "Do not go into court to argue what is legal. Argue what is right." I believe that. At times, I get in trouble because of this. The courts don't always look kindly to you arguing what's right, because they've made these technical justifications to justify things that are discriminatory and wrong.In your cases where you represent a family that has been affected by police brutality, you have been able to bring forth a verdict or a settlement. However, it still seems rare for police to ever receive a prison sentence. Without jail time, is there any sort of real accountability that can prevent situations like this from continuing to happen?I think true accountability means preventing lives from being taken. The police and the prosecutors control whether somebody's going to be arrested, charged, convicted, and go to prison. All we can do as private lawyers is use the Seventh Amendment's right to civil compensation: We strategically employ everything at our disposal to make it financially unsustainable for them to continue to kill Black people unjustly. Because if there's anything that America understands, it's money. We understand capitalism. And so if every time they kill Breonna Taylor or Botham Jean or Andre Hill, they have to pay millions and millions of dollars.At some point, they're going to tell the police, "Hey, y'all gotta quit killing Black people in Jasper, and use the same restraint y'all used when they were storming the Capitol on January 6th. Y'all gave them the benefit of consideration, of doubt, and of humanity. More than anything, we want you to do the same thing with Black people. Don't shoot our children first and ask questions later. We're not asking for anything superior. We just want to be treated equally, whatever you would do for your children. We want our children to come home too."According to Mapping Police Violence, 1,144 people were murdered by police last year. That's 48 more people than in 2019. Do you feel like there has been any real change made in policing since George Floyd?I do. There were 100 Black people killed in 2020 after George Floyd was tortured to death. The Senate <a href="https://www.insider.com/police-reform-bills-breathe-act-legislation-congress-2021-8">failed to sign the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act</a>.But with all of that said, I believe we are making progress—incremental progress, but progress all the same. Cities, municipalities, and states have passed legislation that <a href="https://www.insider.com/city-police-departments-ban-chokeholds-other-deadly-force-options-2020-6">outlaw chokeholds</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/states-that-allow-no-knock-police-raids-breonna-taylor-2020-9">no-knock warrants</a>. For the first time in history, we have a federal database that documents who the police are killing, where they're killing them, and what reasons states are claiming they killed them for.I think we are going to make progress. We will win this war. There may be some battles that break our hearts, but the moral people will win.

So, if you have the shares and are concerned that there’s been a loss on premium, keep the stock if you have the patient. Why are investors wary of Macrotech Developers? One of the reasons for investors to be wary was the company’s high level of debt. Around ₹1,500 crore of funds from the IPO will go towards repaying lenders to ease its balance sheets. But that doesn’t mean that it won’t need more money, which brings us two the second reason investors were vary about putting their money into the offer. Marcotech Developers is operating in a capital intensive sector, the real estate industry, during a pandemic. Any delays due to a lockdown, curfew or the implementation of restrictions like Section 144, could add to its costs — especially since the majority of its projects are in India’s financial capital, Mumbai. The city has been one of the worst hit in all of India during the second wave of the pandemic. “If the company does not have access to funds required on favourable terms, it may be required to delay or abandon some or all planned projects or reduce the scale of operations,” noted Capital Markets in its preview. The brokerage pointed out that the company has earlier difficulties in serving its debt. It was among the companies that availed the moratorium offered by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for six months during the pandemic, from March to August 2020. The size of Macrotech Developers has its own loopholes The problem with Macrotech Developers possibly having to reduce its scale of operations due to the uncertainty propagated by the pandemic is that it’s one thing it has playing in its favour. Macrotech Developers is one of the largest players in the Indian real estate market going up against behemoths like Godrej Properties, Sunteck Realty, and Oberoi Realty. And so far, it has consistently outperformed all its peers when it comes to sales, as per Hem Securities. It has a strong distribution network, not just in India, but in foreign markets like the UK, the US, Singapore and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). But even that comes with its own loopholes. “Large construction projects in all parts of the world provide opportunities for corruption, fraud or improper conduct, including bribery, deliberate poor workmanship, theft or embezzlement by employees, contractors or customers or the deliberate supply of low-quality materials, which may delay development of projects,” said Capital Market’s report. Yes, it's one of the biggest players in the residential real estate market, but being so big at a time when the real estate market is witnessing its biggest slump in five years can be dangerous — even with home loans rates on the downtrend. But the vast popularity of the messaging platform has regulators thinking otherwise. Apart from the ‘take it or leave it’ approach from WhatsApp and Facebook, the bigger question around their new policy is — how much data is too much data? The tech giants believe that is a question that only the law can answer, not data regulators. But the problem lies in the fact that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to address the issue. Many sectors collect data and use that data for analysis, and they all have different benchmarks. For instance, the media uses it to track trends, banks have direct access to entire repositories of customer financial data, healthcare has medical records of patients, classrooms are being digitised, even agriculture is using data to optimise food production. Big data is everywhere. “Data collected, which could be excessive in one sector, could be termed minimal in another sector. For example, a sample size of data required in the financial versus the healthcare sector would be vastly different,” explains Dubey. According to him, this is why the power to decide what is and isn’t ‘excessive’ data lies with the CCI and other competition regulators. They can judge on a case-by-case basis where the line lies, and if it is elbowing other players out of the market. In the case of WhatsApp and Facebook, regulators are concerned that the majority of user data will be controlled by a few corporations and their subsidiaries leading to a monopoly that will be difficult to break once it's in place.
