I used to weigh around 82kg (181lbs) and have lost 15kg (33lbs) over the years by doing cardio, bodyweight exercises, and weight training, but have not been able to lose any more fat for the last few years. </strong></em></p><p><em><strong>I make sure that I eat healthy 80% of the time, have a proper post- and pre-workout meal, and sip my whey protein after my workouts. Still, my goal of having a toned body seems to keep getting more distant. How can I overcome this weight loss plateau and achieve my goal of having a toned body?</strong></em></p><p><em><strong>— Frustrated</strong></em></p><p>Dear Frustrated,</p><p>Weight loss plateaus are very common, and most people who've attempted to lose fat have experienced them. I know I have!</p><p>So let's dive straight in, shall we?</p><h2>Congratulate yourself on what you've already achieved</h2><p>It sounds like you're being pretty hard on yourself, but I think it's important to take a step back for a second and recognize what you've already achieved.</p><p>You've stuck with an active lifestyle for seven years, lost 15 kg (33 lbs), and haven't gained it back — that's amazing.</p><p>Considering <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5764193/">research suggests</a> that 80% of people who lose weight on a diet put it all back (if not more) on within a few years, what you've achieved is nothing short of extraordinary.</p><p>I'm also thrilled to hear that you didn't do anything drastic or faddy to lose the weight in the first place. That's probably why you've managed to keep it off.</p><p>I understand feeling frustrated that your progress has stalled, but don't be too hard on yourself.</p><div type="image" title="Dr Heather Mckee plain profile pic small" height="2105" width="2807" msid="77848454" hostid="261"></div><p>As <a href="https://www.drheathermckee.co.uk/about-dr-heather-mckee.php">Dr Heather McKee</a>, a behavior change specialist and habit coach with a PhD in weight loss psychology, told Insider: "Losing weight is hard enough as it is without having an inner critic punishing you for not progressing as fast as you thought you would."</p><h2>Weight loss plateaus are normal</h2><p>The situation you're in is very common.</p><p>When you first reduce your energy intake, you usually lose weight pretty quickly, but that's often mainly water weight and doesn't last.</p><p>For some people a plateau occurs further down the line because once they've lost the initial motivation to stick to their calorie deficit, they find it too restrictive and give up. As you managed to lose weight for years, it doesn't sound like this is the case for you, though.</p><p><a href="https://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20161014/how-your-appetite-can-sabotage-weight-loss#1">Research suggests</a> that people who lose weight become hungrier as a result, which may mean you're eating at maintenance rather than at an energy deficit.</p><p>While the concept of "starvation mode" (the idea that if you eat too little your body will hold on to its fat stores) does exist, it's not something you'd be experiencing and <a href="https://www.insider.com/truth-about-starvation-mode-and-weight-loss-2020-5">only occurs in extreme cases of malnourishment, experts previously explained to Insider</a>.</p><p>However, you will likely have experienced some <a href="https://www.insider.com/truth-about-starvation-mode-and-weight-loss-2020-5">metabolic adaption</a> — which means that as a smaller person, you require fewer calories than when you were larger.</p><p>This isn't something to be "fixed," it's simply a scientific fact.</p><div type="image" title="Rosie Mensah.JPG" height="1333" width="1778" msid="77848455" hostid="261"></div><p>"You may not require the same calories than you did when you first got started on your journey, and this can be an opportunity for you to rethink your diet," Toronto-based registered dietitian Rosie Mensah told Insider.</p><h2>Lift heavier weights</h2><p>When it comes to your training, the problem could be that you're trying to do too many different things, according to Niko Algieri, personal trainer and co-founder of London gym Equilibrium.</p><p>He said that if you want to reveal the "toned" physique you covet, what that really means is building muscle and losing body fat (<a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-lose-fat-build-muscle-simultaneously-weight-loss-tips-2020-6">which is possible simultaneously</a>), so you should be prioritizing heavy weight-lifting instead of doing a mix of everything.</p><div type="image" title="Niko Algieri 1" height="1656" width="2208" msid="77848456" hostid="261"></div><p>"You need to do more resistance training," Algieri advises. "Don't be afraid of bulking up, that won't happen unless you're in a calorie surplus."</p><p>He recommends picking a weight that allows you to perform an exercise in the 8-12 rep range.</p><p>"That will give you the tone you're looking for, and having more muscle speeds the metabolism," Algieri said.</p><p>Make sure you're applying the principle of progressive overload, which means gradually challenging your body more by increasing the weights, reps, or sets — not doing this may be why your progress has stalled.</p><h2>Ensure you're not overeating</h2><p>Weight loss ultimately comes down to being in an energy deficit, so it's likely that, even if you're eating "healthy" foods, you're just eating too much.</p><p>Celebrity personal trainer Ngo Okafor told Insider that having a pre- and post-workout meal, plus a shake, especially if surplus to the rest of your normal meals, is likely too much.</p><p>If you're eating your next meal within a couple of hours of finishing your workout, that's fine. Don't rely on the scales as a marker of success or failure.</p><h2>Ensure you enjoy your lifestyle</h2><p>The key to consistent weight loss (and subsequently keeping the weight off) is enjoying your lifestyle, and <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1948550616679237">research proves this</a>.</p><p>Did you enjoy your life when you were losing weight? Or have you gradually deviated from those healthy habits because they felt too much like hard work?</p><p>You're more likely to stick with habits that you want to achieve rather than those you feel you have to, because it feels more effortless, according to McKee.</p><p>"Rather than forcing yourself to choke down a kale salad because it's what the latest trend is in healthy eating, take a step back for a second and ask yourself: Is this something you enjoy? Or could there be another healthy option you like better?" she said.</p><p>Yes, discipline is an important part of habit change — but enjoyment is too.</p><h2>Shift your focus from aesthetics to health and performance</h2><p>It's OK to have aesthetic goals, but in my experience they don't provide lasting motivation.</p><p>Why not set yourself a new goal, such as performing 10 full push-ups, or an unassisted pull-up, or deadlifting your bodyweight?</p><p>Mensah recommends reframing your mindset by asking yourself the following questions:</p><ul><li>Can I walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded?</li><li>Can I engage in activities that I was not able to before?</li><li>Can I enjoy foods free from guilt or shame? New Delhi, Jun 13 () As the number of COVID-19 cases crossed the three lakh-mark, the government on Saturday came out with a revised treatment protocol to deal with the deadly infection, allowing use of antiviral drug Remdesivir in moderate cases and Hydroxychloroquine in patients during the early course of the disease. <p>It also recommended an off-label application of Tocilizumab, a drug that modifies the immune system or its functioning, and convalescent plasma for treating coronavirus-infected patients in moderate stage of the illness, besides adding loss of smell or taste to the list of COVID-19 symptoms. </p><p>In its revised 'Clinical Management Protocols for COVID-19', the Union health ministry, in a turnaround from its earlier decision, advised use of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine in the early course of the disease, while dropping the use of azithromycin in combination with HCQ in severe cases and those requiring ICU management. </p><p>Ten days after recording two lakh COVID-19 cases, India surpassed the three lakh-mark on Saturday with the worst daily spike of 11,458 infections, while the death toll too climbed to 8,884 with 386 new fatalities, according to the Health Ministry. </p><p>India took 64 days to cross the one lakh-mark from 100 cases, then in another fortnight it reached the grim milestone of two lakh cases. It has now become the fourth worst-hit nation with a caseload of 3,08,993. Only US, Brazil and Russia have more cases. </p><p>Hydroxychloroquine has demonstrated in-vitro activity against SARS-CoV2 and was shown to be clinically beneficial in several small single-centre studies though with significant limitations, the health ministry said. </p><p>"Nonetheless, several large observational studies with severe methodologic limitations have shown no effect on mortality or other clinically meaningful outcomes," the revised document said. </p><p>"As such, the evidence base behind its use remains limited as with other drugs and should only be used after shared decision making with the patients while awaiting the results of ongoing studies," it said. </p><p>As is the case with other antivirals, this drug should be used as early in the disease course as possible to achieve any meaningful effects and should be avoided in patients with severe disease, the health ministry said, adding that an ECG should ideally be done before prescribing the drug. </p><p>Under emergency use authorisation, Remdesivir may be considered for patients in moderate stage requiring oxygen support. It is not recommended for those with severe renal impairment and high level of liver enzymes, pregnant and lactating women, and those below 12 years, the document stated. </p><p>The drug, administered in the form of injection, should be given at a dose of 200 mg on day one followed by 100 mg daily for five days. </p><p>According to the revised protocols, convalescent plasma therapy may be considered for patients with moderate illness with no improvement in condition despite the use of steroids. </p><p>The therapy involves taking antibodies from the blood of a person who has recovered from COVID-19 and transfusing those to a coronavirus patient to help kickstart the immune system to fight the infection. </p><p>The recipient should be closely monitored for several hours after transfusion for any adverse events and its use should be avoided in patients with immunoglobulin A deficiency or immunoglobulin allergy. </p><p>"The dose is variable ranging from 4 to 13 ml/kg -- usually 200 ml single dose given slowly over not less than two hours," the revised document stated. </p><p>The guidelines state that tocilizumab may be considered in patients with moderate illness with progressive increase in oxygen requirement and in mechanically ventilated patients not improving despite the use of steroids. </p><p>Long term safety data in COVID-19 remains largely unknown, the guidelines stated. </p><p>The presence of raised inflammatory markers should be checked before its use and the patient should be carefully monitored after tocilizumab is administered for secondary infections and neutropenia. Active infections and Tuberculosis should be ruled out before use, it stated. </p><p>For patients with progressive deterioration of oxygenation indicators, rapid worsening on imaging and excessive activation of the body's inflammatory response, glucocorticoids can be used for a short period of time. </p><p>Larger dose of glucocorticoids, a class of steroid hormones, will delay the removal of coronavirus due to immunosuppressive effects, the revised document stated. </p><p>The ministry said that coronavirus-infected patients reporting to various COVID-19 treatment facilities have been reporting symptoms like fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, expectoration, myalgia, rhinorrhea, sore throat and diarrhoea. </p><p>They have also complained of loss of smell (anosmia) or loss of taste (ageusia) preceding the onset of respiratory symptoms. </p><p>The ministry said the use of Remdesivir, Tocilizumab and convalescent plasma therapy, at present, is based on limited available evidence. </p><p>As the situation evolves and when more data become available, the evidence will be accordingly incorporated, and recommendation upgraded, it stated. </p><p>Meanwhile, the ministry's data updated at 8 AM on Saturday showed active cases at 1,45,779 and those who have recovered at 1,54,329; one patient has migrated. </p><p>"Thus, around 49.95 per cent patients have recovered so far," a ministry official said. </p>The total number of confirmed cases include foreigners. As if to salvage India’s image that was lost when the country hosted the <keyword id="6354367" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Commonwealth-Games">Commonwealth Games</keyword> in 2010 in New Delhi, Indian sportspersons continue to shine in the medal race at the C’wealth Games being held in <keyword id="69738" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Glasgow">Glasgow</keyword> this year.<br />
 <br /> Some of the media favourites like <keyword id="28211" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Abhinav-Bindra">Abhinav Bindra</keyword>, <keyword id="10633" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sushil-Kumar">Sushil Kumar</keyword> and <keyword id="20664" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="gagan-narang">Gagan Narang</keyword> have had a great showing. But Indians are a tad disappointed as shuttler Saina Nehwal, the country’s biggest medal hope, pulled out of the Games owing to fitness issues.<br />

The 215-strong Indian contingent participating in the Commonwealth Games 2014 has staged some excellent performances this year. Incidentally, controversies marred the last edition of the Games hosted by India four years ago and clearly took some shine off the excellent showing of Indian sports stars at that time.<br />

But this time around, hopes were as strong as the performances put up by Indians. Among the 6,500 sports persons representing 71 nations across 17 sports, India is sitting snug at the sixth spot. Although this is a ‘fall’ of sorts from the earlier ranking, India may very well finish with third or fourth highest medal tally.<br />

Some of the finest stories of non-celebrities evolving into heroes, based on their dedication, focus, hard work and commitment (laced with the smallest share of luck), are being written here. For instance, there is weightlifter Satish Kumar Sivalingam whom we hardly know. He hails from a poor family in Tamil Nadu, but has now secured his place in the hearts of millions by making his country proud. Sivalingam, a humble Railways employee, won the gold in men’s weightlifting 77kg category.<br />
 <br />
However, India’s ace sharpshooters mostly called the shots in the medal hunt. Apart from Bindra winning the gold in men’s 10m air rifle and Narang settling for the silver medal in 50m rifle prone event, Jitu Rai bagged the gold medal in men’s 50m while Gurpal Singh followed him with the silver.<br />

Shooters and wrestlers came up with a stunning show at the Games, winning majority of the gold medals in India’s medal haul. Having won 41 medals in all, India has so far got 10 gold medals, 19 silvers and 12 bronzes.<br />

Wrestler Sushil Kumar, who carried the weight of India’s aspirations, will also return home to a hero’s welcome. He led the charge of Indian wrestlers who won three of the five gold medals up for grabs at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, the venue for wrestling competitions.<br />

Interestingly, the ongoing Commonwealth Games is his first major international event after his favourite 66kg category was removed and he had to pile up 9kg to qualify for the new weight category. In the Glasgow Games, four sports categories have been removed, reducing the mega event to only 17 categories.<br />
 <br />
Prior to Sushil Kumar, Amit Kumar and Vinesh Phogat made India proud with excellent performance in their respective categories. Amit won gold in men’s freestyle 57kg by beating Nigerian Ebikweminomo Welson, teenager Vinesh held the country’s flag high by clinching an 11-8 victory against England’s Yana Rattigan in the women’s freestyle 48kg wrestling.<br />

The medal haul continued with marksmen Sanjeev Rajput and Narang winning medals (silver and bronze, respectively, in men’s 50m rifle 3 position) for the country. Lajja Goswami also won the bronze in women’s 50m rifle 3 position category.<br />

India Shining: Medal Hunt Meets Success At Commonwealth Games 2014

Europe followed with a short ban on some credit derivatives and bank shares as its sovereign debt crisis exploded in 2010 and 2011.</p><p>And now it's China's turn to halt short-selling as its share indices plunge. The country unveiled<span> </span><a href="http://link.uk.businessinsider.com/55a7f0534e8bbf2f748b459c2wjpc.3n/VcBUL0mOFMbWtoqwAe720" target="_blank">rules that make it harder for speculators to profit from hourly price changes</a>, as some of the nation's major brokerages suspended their short-selling businesses<span>.</span></p><p>Studies of these bans show that although they can inflate some prices briefly, <a href="http://www.newyorkfed.org/research/current_issues/ci18-5.pdf">they can't hold up the whole market.</a></p><p><strong>Here's a chart from the New York Fed showing what happened in 2008:</strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55c0840fdd08957f6d8b465a-985-752/nyfed short sale.jpg" alt="NYFed Short sale" data-mce-source="NY Fed" /><p class="source"><span>NY Fed</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Policymakers often regard  short-sellers as malicious because they profit from a market downturn while the buy-and-hold crowd lose out, so they try to get rid of them. </p><p>But banning them can damage investor confidence in the market (because it becomes harder to tell what a stock is really worth), reduce liquidity and push up trading costs, encouraging people to get out while they still can.</p><p>Here's a graph from a <a href="http://www.researchgate.net/publication/228120784_How_the_Australian_Ban_on_Short_Selling_During_the_GFC_Affected_Market_Quality_and_Volatility">2011 academic paper</a> that shows the difference in bid-offer spreads between Australian stocks that had a short selling ban imposed, and the same stocks in Canada, that didn't have a ban.</p><p>The measure is used to calculate how easy it is for buyers and sellers to interact in a market. The higher it is, the harder it is to trade, and the less liquid the market. Official rules dictate the "wife" can be any woman 18 years or older who weighs at least 108 pounds. If she is too light, contest officials will outfit her with additional weight.</p><p>Miettinen and Haapanen won this year's contest on July 1, with a final time of 68 seconds.</p><p>"The winning is the best part I think," Haapanen, 33, told Business Insider.</p><p>Sixty teams from a dozen countries were represented at the 2017 championships. Each heat involved three teams racing through two dry obstacles - typically sand or hurdles - and a wet obstacle at least one meter deep. Miettinen had already been competing in wife-carrying for about a decade, but his current "wife" had a party to attend on the day of the competition.<p>Miettinen needed an alternate, and since he didn't have much time to search, he had to get clever.</p><p>"<span>There were a lot of woman in dating sites, where they have put their own weight," Miettinen, who's now 52, told Business Insider via email. "</span>I decided [to] send a message for woman whose weight is 46-49 kg. Kristina was the first one who send a message back to me."</p><p>Haapanen says she'd heard of the sport and was eager to give it a try.</p><p>Two years later, the "couple" won their first World Championship. They won again in 2010. And again. It wasn't until this year's competition that they finally stole it back, marking their sixth victory.<p>Compared to past events, Miettinen said the 2017 performance was on the slower side. The pair's fastest time is 60 seconds, but that was in the years before there was a weight minimum, he said. The team has yet to challenge the world record of 56 seconds.</p><p>Still, Miettinen knows he owns the sport.</p><p><span>"I am the first man who has won this competition over 40," he said. "Now I am also first one who has won over 50."</span></p><p>Haapanen said the duo meets up roughly once a month in the winter and roughly twice a week from March until the finals to train. She has no plans of stopping, and says the only factor in her longevity in the sport is whether Miettinen's legs can keep pumping.</p><p>He's told her that if they finish lower than the top three, he'll move into the senior division and dominate there. Meet the power 'couple' dominating the World Wife Carrying Championships

<h3>APEC</h3>
<p>Lets talk about politics first. The two-day Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit has been going on since Sunday, and President Obama also heads to the region this week.</p>
<p>Already the Summit has made news. Russia and China signed a key energy pact meant to reduce Russia's reliance on European oil and gas demand, and there is word that Chinese President Xi Jinping may have a word with his Japanese counterpart on the sidelines. This is a big deal as the two leaders haven't spoken face to face in two years and just signed a four part pact to cool <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/japanrealtime/2014/11/09/who-gave-ground-china-japan-tweak-translations-to-claim-victory/?mod=WSJBlog&amp;utm_source=The+Sinocism+China+Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=825dad184f-Sinocism11_10_1411_10_2014&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_171f237867-825dad184f-29652241&amp;mc_cid=825dad184f&amp;mc_eid=f4df4b6d0d">tensions over disputed islands in the East China Sea.</a></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">During the opening session of APEC, President Xi made a speech about China's "new normal." For the business leaders in the room that meant two distinct things.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">First, it was a nod to China's changing business landscape. Chinese regulators have been <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/10/business/international/no-longer-business-as-usual-in-china-.html?smid=tw-share">cracking down on multi-national</a> corporations operating in the country. Companies like GlaxoSmithKline, Daimler, Qualcomm Chrysler and more have been pushed to cut prices and punished with big fines.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Surveys by business organizations like the American Chamber of Commerce in Beijing and the U.S.-China Business Council show that foreign business people are increasingly concerned that they are becoming the targets of anti-monopoly campaigns - that the government is strong arming them. <a href="http://www.npr.org/2014/10/13/355903979/from-microsoft-to-mercedes-foreign-companies-under-the-gun-in-china">In one survey 60% respondents</a> said that they felt foreign business is less welcome in China than it was before.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Xi's speech was also an acknowledgment that China's economy is slowing down. In part, he said in his speech, because it needs to be reconstructed into a more stable system.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"Resilience best equips the Chinese economy against risks," said Xi. "Given the strategies and policy options at our disposal, we have the confidence and capability to cope with potential risks."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">That, of course, means getting all the multi-nationals to fall in line with this program (thus the crack down with Chinese characteristics) - one in which the country's growth may be lower but is more reliant on domestic consumption than foreign investment.  As state news agency Xinhua said, the <a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/china/2014-11/09/c_133776839.htm?utm_source=The+Sinocism+China+Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=825dad184f-Sinocism11_10_1411_10_2014&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_171f237867-825dad184f-29652241&amp;mc_cid=825dad184f&amp;mc_eid=f4df4b6d0d">"good old days" are over. </a></span></p>
<h3><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The Economic Data<br /></span></h3>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">This is where things get messy - that's another thing to watch for this week. A slew of data on the health of the Chinese economy - industrial production, foreign investment, retail sales - and the scope of the slow down is coming out (or has come out already).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Xi seems okay with the idea that the country will miss its 7.5% GDP growth target for 2014 - but how much is he comfortable with? </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">This weekend's data release showed that imports and exports both slowed - exports slowed less than expected, imports slowed more. Xi would've liked those two stats reversed. He wants his people consuming things, which makes the next two data points all the more troubling. </span></p>

It's the low PPI number that is most troubling. It means that already <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-banks-preparing-for-debt-implosion-2014-10">cash strapped, debt laden Chinese companies</a> will continue to suffer from thin margins.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"[The]...data confirmed sluggish domestic demand and rising disinflationary risks. We expect continued PPI deflation through 2015 and the government's latest "going out" efforts to support Asian infrastructure investment offer some solution to the domestic overcapacity issue," Barclays wrote in an analyst note.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">That "support" came in the form of a minuscule stimulus - <a href="http://t.co/s8FUcLheiY">a $113 billion infrastructure project.</a> That's a little more than 1% of China's GDP to put it in perspective.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">So it's nothing, and according to Societe Generale's Wei Yao, even more of that kind of support isn't the answer anyway.</span></p>

India’s policy addressing hunger and malnutrition in all age groups has a feast of questions and a famine of answers. India’s hunger, being worse than any sub-Saharan country, needs crisis management and a long term vision. <br />

Their neighbours, unable to procure <keyword id="49514" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="bpl">BPL</keyword> (below poverty level) identity cards and Ration Cards aren’t entitled to these basic facilities and have to starve most of the days. Only feast they can think of is ant eggs roast during the scorching summer months.<br />

While development in many sectors is acknowledged, what is lesser known is that India has also made considerable progress on many social fronts, such as fertility decline, expansion of schooling and bridging the gender gap in education, especially at the primary and lower secondary levels. However, there is one <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Excise-duty-in-cigarette-hiked-Tobacco-farmers-in-india-are-struggling-to-make-ends-meet/articleshow/56872791.cms">area of human development</a>, where India has been a disaster: tackling hunger and malnutrition.<br />

Child malnutrition rates in India are extraordinarily high- among the highest in the world, with nearly one-half of all children under 3 years of age being either underweight or stunted. <strong>Pediatric malnutrition</strong><br /> Prevalence of child malnutrition in India has remained stubbornly high even after nearly a half-century of respectable agricultural productivity growth and two decades of post-reform economic growth and prosperity in the country. Adding more support to the view that child malnutrition is weakly correlated with income is the finding that among children of mothers with 10 or more years of schooling as well as mothers from the top income quintile, around one-quarter are underweight. Even in a relatively prosperous and dynamic state like <keyword id="6354766" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>, child malnutrition rates have been stagnant over the past decade.<br />

If we look at proportion of weight at birth, 23 per cent of children weigh less than 2.5 kg, which is below normal. This low birth weight has its reason in the womb, which is where they are malnourished already before being born. Low birth weight increases over time and so by the time they are three-years-old, half the children are malnourished. Because of poor sanitation we have widespread <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/heres-how-indepay-is-making-rural-india-cashless/articleshow/57232771.cms">faecal oral contamination</a>. Water and food sources have high degrees of contamination and it results in diarrhoea and other gastro intestinal illnesses, which increases the child mortality rate,” said renowned public health specialist and activist Dr <keyword id="43944" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binayak-Sen">Binayak Sen</keyword>.<br />

<strong>State of famine</strong><br />
In 1943, three million people died in the infamous <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841">Bengal famine</a>. There was no shortage of grain in <keyword id="6356978" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengal">Bengal</keyword> at that time, yet people had nothing to eat. Interpreting the Famine of 1943,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841"> Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen </a>suggested that the reason for it was the breakdown of the social arrangement in distributing food. To put the matter in a world context, every three seconds somewhere around the world, a child dies of causes related to avoidable malnutrition. "In those three seconds, the world armaments industry spends 120,000 USD in order to keep the system responsible safely in place,” Binayak Sen told <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword>.<br />

<strong>Ignorant policies that do the most harm</strong><br /> Skyrocketing prices of daily food items spell more woe for the people, who are already paying "too much" to survive. International Fund for Agricultural Development’s (<keyword id="1367836" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IFAD">IFAD</keyword>) Rural Poverty Report-2011 states, “While international food prices have declined since mid-2008, they are still substantially higher than prior to the price surge, and they are likely to remain at 2010 levels or higher for the next decade.” The report has suggested that about 100 million of world’s rural and urban people have to remain hungry.<br />
<br /> “It will remain high, the era of cheap food is over," said <keyword id="669006" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Richard-Mahapatra">Richard Mahapatra</keyword>, managing editor of Down to <keyword id="6359982" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="earth">Earth</keyword>. "This is because productivity of agriculture is low and thus impacts production. This is the supply side issue. Also the rainfed areas that contribute a signifcant amount of foodgrain is not getting the policy focus. Even though the new second Green <keyword id="24385" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="revolution">Revolution</keyword> is aimed at that, it seems to be flawed. Now, the demand side. Demand is increasing but we don't have robust distribution mechanism. So, it creates further price rise. Also, there is huge diversion of agricultural lands to other uses. Combined with low productivity, less lands and absence of distribution mechanism, we are set for high price rise.”<br />
<br /> Due to the PDS (<keyword id="89442" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Public-distribution-system">Public Distribution System</keyword>) and the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841">public wage programmes</a> starvation deaths have definitely come down, he contended. Often we call cheap food grain programmes as populist. They are indeed popular as poor find them useful and their starvation is avoided with this entitlement.<br />

<strong>Adult malnutrition</strong><br />
“Roughly 33-35 per cent of the entire Indian population have a BMI below 18.5, which is indicative of calorie malnutrition. They aren't getting enough food to eat. More than one-third of India is on a chronic basis not getting proper food to eat. Low BMI is also restricting people’s immunity,” said Binayak Sen.<br />
<br /> “Without addressing nutritional status, there can be no adequate development. Food Security Act does nothing for betterment of nutritional status of the poeple as such. <keyword id="250148" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Bill">The Bill</keyword> is like 'something is better than nothing'. Five kilos of wheat per person per month make two chapattis per day. With two chapatis the nutritional question isn’t answered. This terrible nutritional deficit is yielding polarization in society,” he added.<br />

<strong>Urban malnutrition</strong><br />
In villages, people stay in close bond with each other, who can be approached for help in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841">times of crisis</a>. Migrating people in cities start living in slums and ghettos, where they have to live with people unknown and untrustworthy. Moreover, people fight here to make ends meet, which actually leads to self-centric attitude.<br />

<strong>Red corridor hunger</strong><br />
“People who are in chronic situation and stable famine are able to withstand only because of their access to natural resources like land, water and forest," opined Binayak Sen. "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841">Access to this resources was unrestricted</a>. Designating the common properties as commodities that can be owned by corporates is restricting poeple’s right to access and in a way right to live. Any form of resistance is labelled as insurgency. First they try civil ways and then take recourse in military measures. People have to confront. Application of eminent domain needs to be questioned. Under 5th schedule, govt has to ensure people’s access to natural resources but there is not a single instances of government intervening.”<br />

“They have mapped it as red corridor but poeple’s deprivation hasn't been mapped yet," said Sen.<br />
<br />
"We need to relook at the arm forces and UAPA laws. Whole discourse in election has become restricted to attitudes to development. Development is about accessing resources. Nobody is saying there are vital issues involved. What is going to happen to the poeple whose right has been denied? State will not be thwarted in its course. There needs to be a contestaion in the level of people. They need to raise the issue.”<br />

<strong>Business Insider’s Take</strong><br />
Agriculture contributes around 16 per cent to<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/author_articles_all.cms?query=%22Suchayan%20Mandal%22&amp;author=Suchayan-Mandal-479239841"> India’s GDP</a>; it is coming down over the years. But still 60 per cent people depend on this. What does this mean? Is it that it is reliable as a source of livelihood or people don't have any other source thus depend on agriculture? In both the cases, shifting people out of agriculture is going to be a tough challenge. Industries or the service sectors have their own limitation and can't absorb such a huge number of people. Strategically, this will be a blunder as we kill out food self-sufficiency.
