India added more than three dollar billionaires every month in 2019, taking the tally to 138 that has helped the country to feature at the third position globally, says a report. China and the US occupied the first and second spot with 799 and 626 billionaires, respectively. In total, India got 34 new billionaires to take the count to 138 on the list, topped by Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries with USD 67 billion in networth, minting Rs 7 crore every hour, and the number jumps to 170 if Indian-origin billionaires outside the country are tallied. According to the ninth edition of the Hurun Global Rich List 2020, which has a list of 2,817 individuals across the globe having a networth of USD 1 billion or more, the world has added 480 billionaires in 2019, more than one a day, while China added more than three a week and India did more than three billionaires a month. However, according to the report, with 799 China is home to more billionaires than the US (626) and India combined and is set to add many more pharma billionaires this year as the communist nation fights a deadly coronavirus epidemic that has already killed more than 2,710 people since mid-January. There is no surprise that Mumbai is the home to more than a third of the richest individuals in the country with 50 of them living in the megapolis, making it the ninth richest city globally, followed by New Delhi with 30, Bengaluru with 17 and Ahmedabad with 12. With USD 67 billion, Ambani is also the ninth richest in the world which is topped by Jeff Bezos of Amazon with USD 140 billion. The second in the list is SP Hinduja family (USD 27 billion), Gautam Adani (a little over USD 17 billion), Shiv Nadar &amp; family (close to USD 17 billion), and Lakshmi Mittal with over USD 15 billion in networth. At the sixth lot is banker Uday Kotak with a networth of around USD 15 billion, making him the richest self-made banker in the whole world. At the seventh slot is Azim Premji with (USD 14 billion), followed by Cyrus Poonawalla of Serum Institute (USD 12 billion) and Cyrus Pallonji Mistry and his son Shapoor Pallonji with USD 11 billion each. And Oyo founder Ritesh Agarwal, all of just 24 years, is the youngest Indian in the rich list with a networth of USD 1.1 billion. Hurun Report India managing director Anas Rahman Junaid said the Indian billionaires are defying gravity as the deepening slowdown does not seem to hamper their growth. It can be noted that 2019 was a good year for the stock markets globally with the US bourses rallying 26 per cent and Indian and Chinese indices gaining 15 per cent and 14 per cent, respectively in the year. The 50 billionaires of Mumbai control around USD 218 billion of wealth between them, followed by 30 in New Delhi holding USD 76 billion and 17 in Bengaluru are worth USD 42 billion, while the 12 in Ahmedabad are worth USD 36 billion and the seven in Hyderabad are worth USD 13 billion, according to Junaid.

Gautam Adani, Mukesh Ambani account for 59% of India’s top 10 billionaires’ wealth

Her wealth has nearly doubled from $2.38 billion in 2019 to $4.6 billion in 2020 — a whopping 93.28% gain among India's 100 richest. She is one of the only five women billionaires in India. <keyword id="55796" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kiran-Mazumdar-Shaw">Kiran Mazumdar Shaw</keyword> started her Indian-based pharma company about 42 years ago with merely two employees and $500 funds. Over the past decade, Biocon has grown by leaps and bounds to become a $5 billion company. Three months after coronavirus broke out in India, Biocon announced that it would launch biologic drug Itolizumab for the treatment of moderate to severe COVID-19 patients at a price of around ₹8,000 per vial. The pharmaceutical is set to begin the phase-4 trials of the potential drug. Well, Shaw might have gained the most, but Mukesh Ambani’s record gains have left everyone behind. He remains India’s richest man for the 13th year in the running and leads by a large margin. India’s second richest woman nearly doubles her wealth to $4.6 billion during the COVID-19 pandemic

 As it does every year, Forbes came out with its World Billionaires List for the year 2016, which was topped by <keyword id="45830" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bill-Gates">Bill Gates</keyword>, who remains the richest person on the planet, with a net value of $75 million, despite being $4.2 billion poorer than a year ago. Gates has not only retained his no 1 spot for three years in a row but has also topped the list 17 out of 22 times. The No 2 spot was grabbed by Zara's Amenico Ortega who gaine dthe honour for the first time. Warren Buffet comes third. 
 According to Forbes, “Facebook’s <keyword id="6354630" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mark-Zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</keyword> had the best year of all billionaires. The 31-year-old added $11.2 billion to his fortune and moved up to No. 6 from 16. He and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos both make their first appearance in the top ten of FORBES’ annual ranking of the world’s wealthiest.”

Here are India's nine richest Indians according to the Forbes list of World Billionaires

<ul><li>Even before the coronavirus outbreak, Indian economy has been slowing down which has led <keyword id="390386" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-billionaires">Indian billionaires</keyword> to collectively lose 23% of their net worth. </li><li>Mukesh Ambani is still the richest man in India with a networth of $36.8 billion though he fell to 21st rank from the tenth rank he held earlier, globally. </li><li>The other billionaires who lost wealth include Uday Kotak, Gautam Adani, and Shiv Nadar. Radhakishan Damani and Sunil Bharati Mittal were the only exceptions.</li></ul>The Covid-19 outbreak and slowdown has cost many people their salaries, jobs and much more. Indian billionaires are not immune to it either. Collectively all of India’s 102 billionaires lost $93 billion - or a quarter of their wealth. Indian billionaires are now worth $313 billion as opposed to $406 billion last year - that is 23% lower than what they held last year. “The COVID-19 pandemic was a double whammy for India’s billionaires, whose fortunes had already taken a hit from a slowing economy and falling consumer demand. Even before India went into a total lockdown at the end of March, its stock market had plunged to a three-year low as of March 18, the date we finalized this year’s list,” <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/naazneenkarmali/2020/04/07/indias-10-richest-billionaires-in-2020/#498bb74b7c23">reported Forbes</a>. As all Indian billionaires lost, Mukesh Ambani could retain his title as India’s richest man. Many other billionaires including Uday Kotak, Cyrus Poonawalla, and Shiv Nadar lost over a billion dollars each. Radhakishan Damani of DMart and Sunil Bharati Mittal were the only exceptions. Damani is now the second richest man in India. Mukesh Ambani’s RIL is inching close to ₹10 lakh crore market value – but already a part of elite global oil club

The Defence Research &amp; Development Organisation (<keyword id="6355142" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="drdo" source="Orion">DRDO</keyword>) that was tasked with investigating into EV fire incidents by the <keyword id="2518729" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="union-road-transport" source="Orion">Union Road Transport</keyword> and Highways <keyword id="48413" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ministry" source="Orion">Ministry</keyword>, has found serious defects in the batteries, including designs of the battery packs and modules. According to sources in the know of the matter, these defects occur because the electric two-wheeler manufacturers like <keyword id="6077703" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="okinawa-autotech" source="Orion">Okinawa Autotech</keyword>, Pure EV, Jitendra Electric Vehicles, <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ola-electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> and <keyword id="12512499" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="boom-motors" source="Orion">Boom Motors</keyword> may have used "lower-grade materials to cut costs". The Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES) at the DRDO has submitted its fact-finding report to the Ministry, as first reported by Business Standard. According to the sources, the ministry has now summoned representatives of these EV manufacturers, asking them to submit an explanation on the DRDO report findings. Earlier this month, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), which comes under the <keyword id="2876140" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="union-consumer-affairs-ministry" source="Orion">Union Consumer Affairs Ministry</keyword>, sent notices to Pure EV and Boom Motors after their e-scooters exploded in April. The consumer watchdog is also examining more cases of e-scooter fires and will serve similar notices to other EV makers too. Pure EV and Boom Motors along with Ola Electric, Jitendra EV, and Okinawa Autotech, recalled faulty batches after the EV fire incidents were reported. The preliminary findings from the government-constituted probe committee on EV fires have already identified issues with battery cells or design in nearly all of the electric two-wheeler fire incidents in the country. The committee was constituted in the wake of EV fires and battery blasts in e-scooters. The experts found defects in battery cells as well as battery design in nearly all EV fires. The government is now working on new quality-centric guidelines for EVs that will be unveiled soon. At least 12 electric two-wheelers have exploded till now and several EV makers have recalled the faulty batches amid the growing pressure from the government. Update: Ola Electric has issued a statement saying it has not received any communication from the government in this matter. DRDO examines EV fire incidents, finds serious battery defects

<ul><li><keyword id="6358200" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jet-airways" source="Orion">Jet Airways</keyword> is set to make a comeback into the aviation industry around July-September quarter with a new promoter, funding and even competitors.</li><li>The airline was grounded in April 2019 after it went into bankruptcy and is now owned by -- UK-based Kalrock Capital Partners and UAE-based businessman Murari Lal Jalan.</li><li>Shares of Jet Airways have surged 47% in the last one month on excitement to fly again while Indian and global markets have been reeling under inflation concerns.</li></ul>Three years after it was grounded, Jet Airways is all set to fly again in July-September with a new promoter in tow. Unlike Kingfisher which closed down for good, Jet Airways is able to make a comeback after going bankrupt. It received an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the aviation regulator DGCA this month. Its new owners – UK-based Kalrock Capital Partners and UAE-based businessman Murari Lal Jalan, took over the airline in June 2021. As expected, the shares of Jet Airways surged 47% in a month, even as the broader markets have been reeling under the stress of growing inflation and rising interest rates. Jet will make a comeback into the sky after three years Jet however will fly into an aviation market that’s starkly different from how it left it. Far from the numero uno status it once occupied, Jet will be a newcomer with many promising newcomers like <keyword id="2467342" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vistara" source="Orion">Vistara</keyword>, a much stronger <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> which is acquired by Tata Sons. Unlike most new airlines, Jet will not be able to gain an entry with price cuts since the sector itself is in recovery mode after being badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. “Let’s say from Delhi to Bomday if they offer a ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 fare they will get market share but then they will never make money because they will later on increase prices. In an already price sensitive market segment, such measures will not help. Also, you are going to make it more difficult for the entire industry to come back to full recovery,” said Amrit Pandurangi, an aviation expert. Even the airlines which are performing well are hit by the rising cost of fuel. Aviation turbine fuel has doubled in the last one year, and since its costs account for 40% of operating costs - their margins are already under stress. Price points, hence, will not be the fighting turf this time around - once a popular strategy. “Anybody losing price to gain market share will end up making a lot more losses.
