<ul><li>A recent study by Greenpeace has revealed that India ranks third on the world’s list of most polluted countries. </li><li>Seven of the world’s 10 most polluted cities are in India. </li><li>Globally, the alarming increase in air pollution is expected to cause 7 million premature deaths in the next year.</li></ul>A new study has revealed that India accounts for seven of the 10 most polluted cities in the world, with Gurugram ranking as the worst in the world with highest level of pollutants. Countrywise, India ranks third on the world ranking for <a href="https://www.airvisual.com/world-most-polluted-cities?continent=&amp;country=&amp;state=&amp;page=1&amp;perPage=50&amp;cities=">highest</a> PM 2.5 concentration, which are tiny particles believed to the most harmful for human health. Gurugram, in the National Capital Region, is the most polluted city in India and the world — with an average <a href="https://www.greenpeace.org/international/press-release/21193/latest-air-pollution-data-ranks-worlds-cities-worst-to-best/">air quality index</a> at 135.8, recorded last year. Other Indian cities that rank in the top 10 list includes Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Bhiwadi, Noida, Patna, and Lucknow . The report published by Greenpeace, India has highlighted that the alarming increase in air pollution may cause seven million premature deaths globally next year due to unequal distribution of PM 2.5 particles contributing to air pollution. Overall, 64% of the 3,000 cities covered in the report surpassed the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines on PM2.5 exposure, which includes pollutants such as sulphate, nitrate and black carbon among others. These particles may also lead to lung and heart disorders. This comes when India already has the most number of real-time data coverage centers, monitoring the <keyword id="2071721" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Quality-Index">air quality index</keyword> around the country. It’s evident that in addition to monitoring, there is a pressing need to set pollution reduction targets and consumption caps on polluting fuels such as coal, petroleum and diesel in the most polluted areas. Productivity losses from pollution covers nearly 8.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in India, as per the World Bank analysis. In fact, stubble burning contributing to pollution, has lead to economic loss of ₹ 2 trillion in India, annually. Stressing on the world economy Yeb Sano, Executive Director of Greenpeace South East Asia <a href="https://www.greenpeace.org/international/press-release/21193/latest-air-pollution-data-ranks-worlds-cities-worst-to-best/">said</a> “Air pollution steals our livelihoods and our futures, but we can change that. In addition to human lives lost, there’s an estimated global cost of $225 billion in lost labour, and trillions in medical costs. This has enormous impacts, on our health and on our wallets.” According to another <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/most-polluted-cities-in-india-will-still-have-filthy-air-despite-ncap-says-greenpeace/articleshow/67749627.cms">report</a> by Greenpeace on pollution, even if the country reduces PM10 levels that it targets to accomplish by 2024, India will still have 139 cities with hazardous pollution levels. India accounts for 7 of the world’s 10 most polluted cities — with Gurugram ranked as the worst: Study

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6355833" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Nations" source="Orion">United Nations</keyword> suggest that the global <keyword id="48933" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="population" source="Orion">population</keyword> could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.4 billion in 2100.</li><li>According to the World Population Prospect report, the global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950.</li><li>It took 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion.</li></ul>The world's population is projected to reach 8 billion people on Tuesday, according to the UN estimates, which consider this a milestone in human development. The latest projections by the United Nations suggest that the global population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.4 billion in 2100. The annual World Population Prospect report, released on Monday to coincide with <keyword id="203146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-population-day" source="Orion">World Population Day</keyword>, also notes that the global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950, having fallen to less that one per cent in 2020. While it took the global population 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion, it will take approximately 15 years--until 2037-- for it to reach 9 billion, a sign that the overall growth rate of the global population is slowing. In 2022, the two most populous regions were both in <keyword id="21718" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asia" source="Orion">Asia</keyword>: Eastern and South-Eastern Asia with 2.3 billion people and Central and Southern Asia with 2.1 billion. <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="China" source="Orion">China</keyword> and <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="Orion">India</keyword>, with more than 1.4 billion each, accounted for most of the population in these two regions. More than half of the projected increase in global population up to 2050 will be concentrated in just eight countries: Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania. Disparate growth rates among the world's largest countries will re-order their ranking by size. According to UN estimates, India is projected to surpass China as the world's most populous country during 2023. Population growth is caused in part by declining levels of mortality, as reflected in increased levels of life expectancy at birth. Globally, life expectancy reached 72.8 years in 2019, an increase of almost 9 years since 1990. Further reductions in mortality are projected to result in an average longevity of around 77.2 years globally in 2050. Countries with the highest fertility levels tend to be those with the lowest income per capita. Global population growth has therefore over time become increasingly concentrated among the world's poorest countries, most of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. In these countries, sustained rapid population growth can thwart the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which remain the world's best pathway toward a happy and healthy future. Even though population growth magnifies the environmental impact of economic development, rising per capita incomes are the main driver of unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. The countries with the highest per capita consumption of material resources and emissions of greenhouse gas emissions tend to be those where income per capita is higher, not those where the population is growing rapidly. Meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise, while achieving the SDGs, critically depends on curbing unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, according to UN. Yet, slower population growth over many decades could help to mitigate the further accumulation of environmental damage in the second half of the current century. World population to hit 8 billion people today

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A new United Nations report says <keyword id="11892747" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s <keyword id="11920876" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="population" source="Orion">population</keyword> will likely overtake <keyword id="11892748" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword>'s by 2023.</li><li>Both have hit 1.4 billion people, although China's population is expected to reduce by 2050.</li></ul>India is expected to become the world's most populous country in 2023, beating out China, according to a United Nations report.Both countries have current populations of over 1.4 billion people, the <a href="https://www.un.org/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/wpp2022_summary_of_results.pdf">UN's Department of Economic and Social Affairs</a> stated in a Monday prospects report.However, UN figures show that while China's population grew from 1.14 billion in 1990 to 1.43 billion in 2022, India's population has boomed from 861 million to 1.412 billion over the same period.China, which is facing an impending <a href="https://www.insider.com/chinas-population-growth-the-slowest-it-has-been-in-decades-2021-5">population crisis</a>, is expected to have a smaller population of 1.32 billion people by 2050. By then, India's population is projected to hit 1.67 billion people.The world's population is also expected to grow to 8 billion people by November, per the report. While global population growth is now at its slowest rate since 1950, the world is still expected to hit a peak of 10.4 billion people by the 2080s.Meanwhile, the US is expected to remain the world's third-most populous country up to 2050, growing to 375 million people, when it will share the spot with Nigeria.The report noted that fertility rates were falling worldwide, even in countries with growing populations. This was explained by the fact that while more people in these areas had babies, each person also had fewer children.The UN also wrote that population growth up to 2050 would be concentrated in eight particular countries: The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Tanzania.The countries that would likely see their populations reduced by at least 20% are Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Serbia, and Ukraine, the report added.UN Secretary-General António Guterres said reaching the 8 billion global population mark is an "occasion to celebrate" but also a "reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our commitments to one another.""Reaching a global population of 8 billion is a numerical landmark, but our focus must always be on people," he wrote <a href="https://www.un.org/en/observances/world-population-day/messages">in a statement accompanying the report</a>. India is set to overtake China in 2023 as the world's most populous nation, the United Nations says

World over, teenage girls face a number of challenges such as early marriage and motherhood. Many teenage girls are forced to drop out of schools and are marginalised. 
 
To bring these challenges to zilch, UNFPA has been running a series of programmes that aim to end child marriage, curb adolescent pregnancy, and to empower girls to make informed choices about their health and lives. 
 
In 2015 alone, UNFPA programmes helped 11.2 million girls between ages 10 and 19 gain access to sexual and reproductive health services and information.
