Five reasons why telecom operators may win the battle for 5G against ISRO

"5G will become the new lifeblood of the digital economy and digital society once it is established," said European Commission VP Neelie Kroes. "This is the first time ever that public authorities have joined together in this way, with the support of private industry, to push forward the process of standardisation."
Kroes tweeted out news of the agreement and is seen below receiving what I can only assume to be the key to the internet. (That's a joke, although the internet is actually contorlled by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-internet-is-controlled-by-14-people-2014-3">14 people who hold seven secret keys</a>.)

The push for 5G technology is driven by a desire for speed online. The European Commission has suggested that 5G will bring "fiber-like" speeds to our phones and give users the ability to download an HD movie in 6 seconds. Don't believe me? If the Europe/South Korea pairing seems strange, consider that South Korea is home to Samsung, <a href="http://www.techtimes.com/articles/7418/20140522/top-u-s-smartphone-vendor-q1-2014-apple-edges-samsung.htm">second only to Apple</a> in the smartphone market. So while the EU represents a literal audience for 5G, South Korea is interested in marketing 5G via Samsung to consumers worldwide.
More than anything, the agreement will streamline the standardization of 5G tech worldwide and allow companies to share research. The announcement outlined a memorandum of understanding to be signed between the major players in Europe's mobile market (like Deutsche Telekom, Orange, and Ericsson) and South Korea's 5G Forum. 
This means consumers can expect 5G to develop faster that previously expected. The European Commission has pegged 5G to reach the market between 2020 and 2030, though this announcement suggests we'll all be comfortably streaming HD video through our smart glasses by 2024.

Telecom companies join hands to seek reservation of 5G airwaves

New Delhi, May 11 () Telecom operator Bharti Airtel has selected IT companies IBM and Red Hat to build its new network cloud to support 5G operations and applications around emerging technologies on its network. Under the agreement, Airtel will build its next generation core network, analytical tools and new consumer and enterprise services on top of this cloud platform based on open standards. "As part of our endeavour to build a 5G ready network for India's requirements, we are pleased to collaborate with IBM and Red Hat in our cloud journey. "The hybrid cloud architecture will resonate with our customer-obsession by providing improved flexibility, network stability and performance and bringing agility and automation in our network operations," Bharti Airtel chief technology officer Randeep Sekhon said in a statement. A cloud-based telecom network is considered more efficient and flexible in delivering services specially new applications at large scale in less time with reduced capital and operational expenditure. According to the statement, India's data consumption is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 70 per cent by 2021. Adopting a modern hybrid cloud architecture enables communication service providers (CSPs) to deliver more responsive networks that tap into automation and AI to address growing customer needs and deploy new services at the right location and network tier, the statement said. "IBM is a valued collaborator to many of the world's largest and most innovative communications service providers like Airtel as they transform their networks into open and secure hybrid multi-cloud platforms and prepare for the 5G and edge computing era," Steve Canepa, Global Managing Director, Communications Sector and Worldwide Head of Telecommunications, Media &amp; Entertainment Industry at IBM said. Telecom Regulatory Authority of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> (TRAI) Chairperson Dr P.D. Vaghela on Friday said that introduction of <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g" source="Orion">5G</keyword> technology will enable India to achieve the digital empowerment goal and improve the well-being of the people. "5G technology would offer significant improvements in network performance and is likely to transform industries and society, putting the country on an unprecedented growth trajectory. 5G would have a massive impact on various industries and on the overall economy," he said at a workshop here. Vaghela also said that India is the second largest telecom market in the world now with 117 crore telecom subscribers and 825 million broadband subscribers. He said that India has considered technology as a key element for two things, one for rapid economic growth and the second for social and digital inclusion. According to him, the Digital India programme has helped a lot in expanding the use of technology and the Digital India profile has seen a huge change in various sectors. The TRAI chief also highlighted how the stakeholders can cooperate for expediting infrastructure rollout for 5G deployment considering the issues and challenges in the northeastern states. He said that the main focus of the government is to provide internet and digital access to everyone, including underserved people, to ensure that every section of society gets connectivity at any cost. About the need of adopting new digital technology for social and economic development, Vaghela said that digitalisation of the economy and also social life is of utmost importance in today's world. Emphasising the need for digital literacy and digital infrastructure, he said that the development of digital infrastructure and connectivity to every household is a must and this is the only way a common citizen becomes able to explore the opportunities available in an economy. 5G will improve network performance in India: TRAI Chairperson

<ul><li>India's former telecom regulator Pradip Baijal has explained how India has had trouble managing its spectrum roll out for next-gen communications technology over the last few decades.</li><li>The latest in this telecom - 5G - is also facing similar hurdles in India, with the government yet to finalise guidelines and announce auction of airwaves.</li><li>He also explained how different use-cases of 5G are relevant and important to India - from the point of view of consumers as well as the industry.</li></ul>India always had problems in dealing with spectrum. We wasted valuable wireless spectrum for fixed line services in 1995, unlike any other country, after the erroneous decision that expensive mobile phones were not for the poor Indians. The decision was reversed in 2004, but led to a lot of inspired criticism by mobile incumbents. Earlier, the government approved a Convergence Bill in 2001, for more efficient use of spectrum, but was not approved. The government/regulator, therefore, approved a Unified Access License in 2004, reduction in interconnect charges and tariff forbearance. But, it took inefficiently long to bring in these changes (it had to be done in stages, by many regulatory efforts). Unified License reduced tariffs 50 times, but increased government revenues. Mobile numbers growth immediately increased 10 times, and gradually 200 times, three times ever the leader, China. 3G spectrum auctions were efficient later, though delayed, and showed the huge loss in 2G allocation and crony capitalism involved, the basis of the CAG report. The allocations led to litigation and differing and controversial judgments by the Supreme Court/CBI Court, the issue still remaining open, but this was one of the issues on which the UPA lost heavily to NDA, in the ultimate court of elections in 2014. 4G auctions were conducted efficiently, even though they were delayed, and now we have come to 5G auction issues, with an ET news item commenting, "India is set to miss the '5G bus' following the lack of preparedness, unavailability of sufficient spectrum, absence of encouraging use cases, and uncertainty around radio waves sale for the next generation of telecom services." This is despite India appointing A.J. Paulraj (winner of the Marconi Prize) Committee to give the recommendations to the steps required. They gave the report in mid-2018, and despite giving the schedule, we have not moved fast. In the past, Prime Minister Modi-led government maintained that it "won't afford to miss 5G bus" like in the case of 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies that were deployed in India way later than many countries, thus losing the many early user advantages. 5G and India Before we discuss, let us understand the nature of use of 5G. For a layman, 5G is just next generation wireless infrastructure which will provide them voice and data services. However, it will impact much more due to its bit-level intelligence characteristics. 5G will provide an array of network intelligence which will get translated into precise and demand-led resource allocation. 1G came in 1980s and provided basic voice services, 2G in 1990s and enabled voice and SMS services due to its digital standards, 3G came in 2000s and introduced data services along with voice and SMS that enabled multimedia services. 4G pure IP network, came in 2010s, and enabled the application services and partially merged the telecom and information technology which gave boom to platform services. The architecture of 5G is designed to handle the connection of billions of devices including industrial machines with seamlessness and reliable data transfer with much faster speed. 5G is not only about high speed boost but it is about the intelligence at the bit level and low latency which will make it the foundational tech for multiple new tech., including self-driven cars, AR &amp; VR, telemedicine, robotic surgery, powering future smart cities, IoT, m2m, AI and manufacturing. 5G will change the future war fighting too due to increased situational awareness to increase the command and control of the battlefield. Once these networks come, 2G and 3G networks can be abolished, like in other countries for better overall spectrum utilization. We have not started. Industrial revolutions and change It has been shown that industrial revolutions change the world. Hirschman had said that these revolutions occur every 70 years. This was proved in IR 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. The US and the West's GDP went up five to six times in IR 1.0 &amp; 2.0, while India and China went down 10 times (colonial loot was also the reason). Growth reversal with IR 3.0 But IR 3.0 changed the world with the technology being on a connected net and with globalization, available to the Third World (right from the beginning). Of course, the US helped China a lot post 1980, in technology dispersal, and helping China with accelerated WTO membership in 2001. This led to China growing eight times and India 2.5 times in a few years. IR 4.0 and 5.0 The world is now moving to the fourth and the fifth industrial revolutions in quick succession. Providentially, these revolutions are also happening on the same wire or wireless lines as in IR 3.0, and we have bright Indian minds working in the digital sector like Nadella, Pichai, Arvind Kuar, Banga, Tata, Kohli, Nilekani, Narayana Murthy, Patni, Soota, Premji, and millions of others located in Silicon Valleys around the world. The most exciting additions to the list are Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal and Kumar Mangalam Birla. They have kept the mobile sector alive despite crony capitalism, and given the appropriate ambience, should do very well now. Through them, and despite Covid, the world has shown confidence in the Indian economy. China should do well because of enormous investment, past technology thefts, uninhibited US support till 2015, and R&amp;D. The fifth IR will happen with IT getting connected to human minds (AI and beyond). IR 5.0 having reached the human mind, perhaps cannot move beyond, and the 6th IR has to be in another area, maybe the planets, as visualized by Jeff Bezos. Again, India is well-placed. Creating an appropriate environment is the key. Role of private sector It may also be recalled that the 2G rollout had created strong private sector companies and from 10 per cent private network, it had gone to 80 per cent (though the public sector had grown too). Later, despite crony capitalism, they had survived, and are today, India's main hope to take us forward. With 5G networks being more powerful, they will surely impact GDP growth much more than the earlier generation networks and move the country towards Namo's $5 trillion economy in 2024. Fiscal pressure on the government - we can ill-afford to ignore: We are today also hit by Covid, huge bank NPAs, financial crisis, fiscal deficits and fall in investments. 5G rollout is an opportunity for huge network (and downstream) investments by existing private sector companies and their networks all over the country, without putting any fiscal deficit pressure on the government. I had, therefore, anticipated in my China book and articles, that the present is 'providence' for India, like it was 'providence' for China in the 80s with an imaginary 'cold war'. Pricing issues A word about pricing here - our entire 2G revolution came after tariff forbearance, and liberal availability, connectivity and regulatory reforms. Obviously, once 5G revolutions get moving, the disruptions would be higher. Indian economy/GDP did well during IR 3.0, its DNA being more IT-centric, demonstrated by high growth in these sectors during some periods of IR 3.0, when regulations were right (2004 to 2010), particularly vis-a-vis China, and also the Indian minds being more IT-centric, demonstrated by the success of IT (software) and mobile revolutions. World digital economy In 2019, the world celebrated the first full year when more than half of the world (51.2 per cent, or 3.9 billion people) had begun to participate in the global digital economy by logging onto the internet, from almost zero a couple of years back. The world is turning fully digital, and networks converging very fast. China has touched 840 million subscriber base and will be 1 billion at the end of 2020, with superior speed, whereas India has only touched 600 million broadband subscribers. The world will thus transform itself to a form that during IR 4.0 and 5.0 the versatile 4 and 5G networks will be more valuable than all other infrastructure, like roads, rail and air transportation systems etc. Looking at the future, China has created companies which are leading in 5G, AI, quantum computing and other digital products and shaping up the digital behaviour of the people because they are deploying networks faster and learning by doing it. China is also leading in the standardization and patents of the digital ecosystem, manufacture of equipment etc. In contrast, the Indian 5G process is yet to commence (allocation of spectrum and installation of 5G equipment), though we have done extremely well despite late start in the past. India can grow in IR 4.0 given its human capital pool, the start in the use of algorithm prowess and an established IT hub, only if we install 4G and 5G systems adequately. But expensive and presently unviable (for India, since IR 4.0 and 5.0 industries and services have not started) 5G systems are likely to come in slow. Also, the spectrum and equipment prices are anticipated to be high. Unless both spectrum and equipment prices are low and heavily backloaded, I do not see India coming out of the jigsaw puzzle, and not falling back severely in the digital war. And if we miss India's turnaround moment, India's vast market and trained manpower will be used by advanced countries to develop 5G / IR4.0 and 5.0 networks fast. The Paulraj Committee recommended that 5G will mature between 2019 and 2024. India should take lead and become an innovator in 5G applications. According to the GSM association, China will <a href="https://www.gsma.com/newsroom/press-release/new-study-gsma-caict-forecasts-china-will-worlds-largest-5g-market-2025/">represent</a> 40% of global 5G connections by 2025. And, China’s has a lot to gain as well. The research arm of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in China <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/china-tech/article/2098948/china-plans-28-trillion-yuan-capital-expenditure-create-worlds?utm_source=Triggermail&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Post%20Blast%20%28bii-apps-and-platforms%29:%20Google%20open%20sources%20object">estimates</a> that 5G connectivity could account for 3.2% of China’s entire GDP in 2025 as well as create nearly 8 million jobs. It should be noted that since these are just 5G trials, the network isn’t fully operational. But it does cover the entire area using 228 5G base stations. But once it officially up and running for everyone, subscribers will be able to take advantage of the same without having to upgrade their SIM cards. Although, they will have to ensure they have phones will 5G capability which, as of now, aren’t very cheap. The Chinese government has plans to have 10,000 5G base stations ready to go by the end of 2019 in Shanghai and by 2021, they expect to cross 30,000 stations. According to the deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Economic and Information Commission, the effective deployment of the 5G network in the district will help industrial manufacturing, cars connected to the internet, health care and smart city management since its speed is 10 times that of 4G networks. <div type="ExtQuote" text="China Mobile has invested the most in Shanghai to date to help the city expand its 5G trial network and related applications, because it is the most developed city in China with rather solid infrastructure in many aspects." auname="Zhang Jianming, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Economic and Informational Commission"></div>

 Aside from speed, the low latency of 5G networks is especially helpful for applications of the internet of things. At the launch ceremony of the 5G trial network, the vice mayor of Shanghai, Wu Qing, made the network’s first 5G video call on an Huawei Mate X, which was the first phone to launch with 5G capabilities. The US, on the other hand, has been pressuring countries to cut ties with Huawei and their <keyword id="1671941" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-technology">5G technology</keyword>. According to an article in the Washington Post, “Huawei is constructing a global network of undersea Internet cables and next-generation mobile networks that could give China effective control of the digital commanding heights.” While Huawei is reportedly denying any links to Chinese government, it’s a bold move on China’s part to posture itself as a world leader in technology, ahead of its competitors. China has plans to continue these 5G network trials in other parts of the country, including Tibet, as the year goes on. The world’s first 5G network trials go live in Shanghai

<ul><li>Indian businesses will have more to gain from 5G connectivity than consumers initially. </li><li>5G connectivity will help more IoT devices come online and make the economy more efficient. </li><li>Simultaneously companies and businesses will have to think about security in a new way as 5G networks roll out. </li></ul>The technology of 5G opens up a whole new world of connectivity with higher speeds and reduced lag. India's preparedness for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/how-5g-will-unlock-the-industrial-internet-driving-another-dimension-of-mobile-connectivity/articleshow/69155069.cms">opportunities</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/5g-is-the-largest-existential-threat-to-broadband-providers-and-verizon-and-t-mobile-could-be-about-to-win-big/articleshow/65535242.cms">challenges</a> that lie ahead are not any different from the rest of the world. "India's in a similar situation as Singapore, as Australia or as the US when it comes to a lot of risks associated with 5G — the technology is the same technology," Scott Stevens, Senior Vice President of Global Systems Engineering at Palo Alto Networks, told Business Insider. Indian businesses will have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-will-go-5g-by-2020-but-you-may-not-feel-the-difference/articleshow/63236314.cms">more to gain initially</a> but it's only a matter of time before consumers will gain as the network matures. And, it's going to help industries be more efficient by facilitating the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/These-5-Speed-Bumps-Could-Stop-The-Internet-Of-Things-Dead-In-Its-Tracks/articleshow/36743233.cms">Internet of Things (IoT)</a> build up. "We'll have many smarter sensors because we can. And, they can start to solve problems for us and allow us to be more efficient," said Stevens. At the same time, governments and companies will have to think about security in a new way as they think about implementing 5G. "As more devices are connected and more powerful devices connected, we're going to have to take a fresh look at how we secure 5G and making sure that it's safe — that it is able to deliver services to everybody all the time and is not impacted by whatever malicious actors want to do in the world these days," explained Stevens. 5G is expensive Mobile operators in India are currently trying to delay the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-plans-to-complete-5g-spectrum-auction-by-november-end/articleshow/71064977.cms">5G spectrum auction</a> on the grounds that there aren't enough use cases for it yet. Telecom companies are still staggering under the debt of offering cheap 4G data "One of the challenges in India is the standard problem of how expensive the spectrum can be and making sure the business case is there for the operators to build," said Stevens. Malicious malware knows no boundaries Every country has its own rules and regulations when it comes to data privacy and protection — and they're all evolving at a slightly different pace. India's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-personal-data-protection-bill-global-ceo-concerns/articleshow/68389336.cms">Personal Data Protection Bill</a> is yet to clear the parliament and become law. But malicious software is not limited by geography. "Threat actors don't really believe in national and state boundaries. They're opportunities. If they find vulnerabilities, they exploit that," noted Stevens. "The virtualisation of the infrastructure is the same. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/samsung-ericsson-and-nokia-plan-for-5g-network-in-india/articleshow/70027132.cms">major vendors</a> which provide this infrastructure are the same major vendors. So, Airtel's going to use similar infrastructure that Telstra's going to use with a little reservicing," he explained. And, attacking 5G networks isn't just about stealing data. Most <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/iot-ecosystem-what-is-the-internet-of-things-2016-2">IoT devices</a> don't hold a lot of information but they do have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Hereshow-the-Internet-of-Things-is-being-usedfor-major-cyberattackson-the-enterprise/articleshow/54987418.cms">computing power</a>. Even if it's marginal power per device, if enough of them are put together, it adds up to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/take-these-6-security-measures-to-protect-your-iot-devices-from-hackers/articleshow/47777504.cms">significant amount</a>. 4G will work fine as consumers wait for 5G "A lot of the initial evolution is on the spectrum side but not necessarily on upgrading every chain in the network. So, 4G still works fine," said Stevens. According to him, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/airtel-shuts-down-3g-services-in-kolkata/articleshow/69988525.cms">4G and 5G will coexist</a> for quite a while since a lot of devices don't speak 5G yet. "Nothing is happening overnight. There's no flash moment where we reverse which side of the street we drive on," he explained. And, businesses will reap the benefits ahead of consumers — initially. They'll be able to function more efficiently not only because the 5G has greater capacity to collect data but also because it will make things cheaper. In manufacturing, for instance, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/5g-is-the-largest-existential-threat-to-broadband-providers-and-verizon-and-t-mobile-could-be-about-to-win-big/articleshow/65535242.cms">wiring up a warehouse</a> is an expensive process which can be replaced by IoT sensors instead. 5G creates an opportunity for the industry to connect to the network in a new way and remove some of dependencies on Wi-Fi or physically connecting to a network. Some companies might even shift over from building computer networks to leveraging the 5G network to deliver their services. "It provides the opportunity for an economy to become more efficiency because that connectivity is now available in many places," said Stevens. Consumers might have to wait a little longer as 5G matures and the ecosystem stabilises. "Pokemon Go wasn't why we invested 4G but it turns out it was kind of fun for us! And so, there will be interesting new opportunities for services that weren't available previously or things that we never really conceived before," said Stevens. India is as prepared as US or Australia to welcome the 5G era

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has permitted telecom service providers (TSPs), including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio Infocomm, Vodafone Idea, and MTNL, to conduct 5G trials. As largely anticipated, Chinese tech majors such as Huawei and ZTE have not been allowed to participate in the trials. An official statement said that the TSPs have tied up with original equipment manufacturers and technology providers -- Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and C-DOT. In addition, Reliance Jio Infocomm will also be conducting trials using its own indigenous technology. The permissions have been given by the DoT as per the priorities and technology partners identified by TSPs themselves. The experimental spectrum is being given in various bands which include the mid-band (3.2 GHz to 3.67 GHz), millimetre wave band (24.25 GHz to 28.5 GHz) and in sub-Gigahertz band (700 GHz). The TSPs will also be permitted to use their existing spectrum (800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2500 MHz) for conduct of 5G trials. The duration of the trials is for a period of six months. This includes a time period of two months for procurement and setting up of the equipment. The permission letters specify that each TSP will have to conduct trials in rural and semi-urban settings also, in addition to urban settings so that the benefit of 5G technology proliferates across the country and is not confined only to urban areas. The TSPs are encouraged to conduct trials using 5Gi technology in addition to the already known 5G technology. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has also approved the 5Gi technology, which was advocated by India, as it facilitates much larger reach of the 5G towers and radio networks. The 5Gi technology has been developed by the IIT Madras' Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT), and the IIT Hyderabad. The Communications Ministry statement said that the objectives of conducting 5G trials include testing 5G spectrum propagation characteristics, especially in the Indian context, model tuning and evaluation of chosen equipment and vendors, testing of indigenous technology, testing of applications, and to test 5G phones and devices. 5G technology is expected to deliver improved user experience in terms of data download rates (expected to be 10 times that of 4G), up to three times greater spectrum efficiency, and ultra-low latency to enable Industry 4.0, it said. Applications are across a wide range of sectors such as agriculture, education, health, transport, traffic management, smart cities, smart homes, and multiple applications of IoT (Internet of Things). DoT has specified that the trials will be isolated and not connected with the existing networks of TSPs. Trials will be on non-commercial basis and the data generated during the trials shall be stored in India. TSPs are also expected to facilitate the testing of the indigenously-developed use cases and equipment as part of the trials. One hundred applications or use cases selected by DoT after conducting the recent hackathon on 5G applications can also be facilitated in these trials, it said. Commenting on the development, a Nokia spokesperson said: "Nokia India welcomes the government's decision to conduct trials including rural and semi-urban areas, aligned with the long-term vision of a Digital India." "We are confident of our readiness to support our customers in implementing 5G strategy with the advantage of our technology leadership, our experience in serving customers globally, and our initiatives in India including 5G manufacturing in Chennai." Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) Director General S.P. Kochhar said the move it will stimulate local R&amp;D ecosystem to develop innovative applications tailored to commercial needs. "We welcome the government's decision to start exhaustive 5G trials in different categories of locations across India. It will stimulate local R&amp;D ecosystem to develop innovative applications tailored to commercial needs. "It will enable TSPs to validate 5G technologies and use cases such as IoT and Industry 4.0. We hope the Govt. will also look into the industry's call for revisiting the 5G spectrum pricing," Kochhar added. Indian government gives the nod for 5G trials, Chinese companies kept out for now

According to the latest edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report, 4G subscriptions are forecast to decline annually to an estimated 700 million subscriptions in 2027 as subscribers migrate to 5G post introduction of 5G in India. "The latest Ericsson Mobility Report confirms 5G as the fastest growing mobile technology generation ever, and Ericsson is playing a key role in making it happen," Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks, Ericsson, said in a statement. "We work every day with our customers and ecosystem partners around the world to ensure that millions more people, enterprises, industries, and societies enjoy the benefits of 5G connectivity as soon as possible," Jejdling added. In global terms, 5G is forecast to account for almost half of all subscriptions by 2027, topping 4.4 billion subscriptions. The report highlights that North America is forecast to lead the world in 5G subscription penetration in the next five years with nine-of-every-10 subscriptions in the region expected to be 5G by 2027. It also predicted that current global <keyword id="7746716" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g-subscriptions" source="Orion">5G subscriptions</keyword> will pass the one billion milestone by the end of 2022. The 2027-timeline also includes projections that 5G will account for 82 per cent of subscriptions in Western Europe; 80 per cent in the Gulf Cooperation Council region; and 74 per cent in North East Asia.
