<ul><li>For <keyword id="18996" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Environment-Day">World Environment Day</keyword>, UP government and UN Environment have launched an action plan to control <keyword id="55910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Pollution">air pollution</keyword> in <keyword id="6356295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="agra">Agra</keyword>.</li><li>Agra is one of the most polluted cities in the world, and this has had a direct impact on the city’s historic <keyword id="6355354" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="taj-mahal">Taj Mahal</keyword>. </li><li>One of the <keyword id="1257564" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Seven-Wonders-of-the-World">seven wonders of the world</keyword>, the Taj Mahal has been subject to discolouration because of air pollution.</li></ul>Right before World Environment Day, the city of Agra woke up to take action against rising pollution. Now, the government of Uttar Pradesh along with <a href="https://www.unenvironment.org/news-and-stories/press-release/city-taj-mahal-agra-launches-action-plan-combat-air-pollution">UN Environment</a>, is set to implement a comprehensive action plan to control air pollution, which will also protect the Taj Mahal. The city is home to Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world. This majestic monument came under dire stress as Agra became the eighth most polluted city in the world. The beautiful white marble facade of Taj Mahal is <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-pollution-india-tajmahal/pollution-turns-indias-white-marble-taj-mahal-yellow-and-green-idUSKCN1IN01S">reportedly</a> turning yellow and green, facing discolouration, due to air pollution. Not just that, the huge <a href="https://www.latimes.com/world/asia/la-fg-india-taj-mahal-20180522-story.html">mounds</a> of garbage lying on the banks of Yamuna where the historic monument is located, has led to an infestation of insects around the Taj Mahal. These factors have turned tourists wary of visiting the monument. Otherwise, it is known to draw interesting onlookers in hoards, from around the world. The extensive smog which covers the tomb that dates back to the 17th century, during winters is not helping either. An action plan Now, the state government along with the UN Environment rolled out the action plan which will now control –vehicle emissions, crop residue, garbage and municipal solid waste burning along with industrial emissions. Moreover, the government of Uttar Pradesh now plans to deploy 650 electric buses. A large number of international organizations are lending a hand too. “To help deal with Agra’s mounting plastic waste, Massive Fund proposed a project of $30 million under the Alliance to End Plastic, to eliminate more than 90 percent of plastic waste from Agra. Waste management firm Geocycle further proposed to pilot a technology to clean up the Yamuna river in Agra. Kanoria Industries plans to invest ₹150 billion for sustainability related activities in the city,” stated the report by UN Environment. The fading beauty of Taj Mahal will get a soothing touch on World Environment Day

New Delhi, Union Home Minister <keyword id="6355521" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amit-shah" source="Orion">Amit Shah</keyword> on Sunday took stock of the situation in the wake of incessant rains as he spoke to the chief ministers of Punjab and <keyword id="6358126" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="himachal-pradesh" source="Orion">Himachal Pradesh</keyword>, and the lieutenant governors of Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir, sources said. The home minister assured them all central help in tackling the arising situation. The sources said Shah spoke to the chief ministers of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and took updates about losses due to the rains. In view of the <keyword id="6385438" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heavy-rains" source="Orion">heavy rains</keyword> in the national capital, the home minister also spoke to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena and took updates. Flash floods washed away roads in hilly areas, leaving people marooned, while authorities asked tourists to plan their visit after the weather improves. Heavy downpour warnings have been issued for certain areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, while in Delhi, which recorded its highest rainfall in a single day in July since 1982, authorities have cautioned over rising water level of the Yamuna. In three sperate incidents of landslides in Himachal Pradesh, where a red alert of extremely heavy rains has been issued for seven districts, five people were killed. The Amarnath pilgrimage resumed on Sunday from Panjtarni and Sheshnag base camps after remaining suspended for three days due to inclement weather in Kashmir, officials said. As soon as the skies cleared around the cave shrine, authorities opened the gates and allowed the stranded devotees to offer prayers at the naturally formed ice-lingam in south Kashmir Himalayas, they said. The monsoon rains brought down the air pollution level in the vicinity of the Taj in September and the Yamuna, too, was flowing full at the rear. "Foreign tourists are simply mesmerised by the charm of the Taj Mahal, and spend hours at the monument," said a guide escorting a group from Italy. However, in October the smog started engulfing the whole city reducing visibility in the morning. But this has not deterred tourists from visiting the Mughal monuments. "Holidays are a time for students' groups from all over India to visit the Taj Mahal and other historical monuments in Agra. Entry to children below 15 years remains free." Tourism organisations in the city have been blaming government agencies for not maintaining the roads and civic amenities. This generates a lot of negativity about tourism in Agra. "The police has been rather indifferent to the problems tourists face from unauthorised guides called 'Lapkas', who harass and pester the tourists everywhere." Agra tourism industry on a boom, despite pollution and war cries

New Delhi, Dec 15 () France-based Suez SA is working on two water management projects worth 217 million euros (over Rs 1,700 crore) in New Delhi and Mangalore, a company official said.
A waste water treatment plant is being set up in Okhla here at a cost of 145 million euros and will be operational within three years, said Suez Group's Senior Executive Vice President Ana Giros Calpe, who was in the national capital recently.
Besides this, a 72 million euros water distribution project in Mangalore will kick off within a month, Calpe added.
The company was awarded the Okhla project by Delhi Jal Board, the governing body for water management, she said adding it will have a capacity of 564,000 m3 /day.
"Once (the project )becomes operational, the plant being set up at a cost 145 million euros will remove 41,200 kg of organic pollutant load per day and 61,600 kg solid load per day from the Yamuna," she said.
Speaking further on the Mangalore project, Calpe said it has been awarded by the civic body of Mangalore and financed by Asian Development Bank.
"The project includes extension, rehabilitation and operation of the drinking water distribution system which covers an area of 132 km, including 96,300 connections and a 2,148-km water distribution network. This 11.5-year contract, worth 72 million euros will ensure a 24X7 water supply for the city and its 550,000 inhabitants," she said.
The contract awarded to Suez India in Mangalore is part of the city's water and waste management plan which seeks to upgrade the entire distribution system, Calpe said.
 In the initial three years, the company will design and lay down 1,388-km of drinking water network, design and construct a filter house, clear water sump and pumping stations, according to the additional information provided by the company.
This will be be followed by an eight-year period of operation and maintenance of the entire drinking water distribution system, it said.
Calpe further said the demand for clean water in India will continue to rise with the growing concern among people, and the company is aiming to tap this opportunity. It will continue to explore business opportunities in tier I, II and III cities and work with their civic bodies. ABI ANU
