Donald Trump has insisted that Boris Johnson "knows how to win" after the UK prime minister lost his majority in parliament and was repeatedly defeated twice in major votes on Brexit.

Members of Parliament voted twice for a new law to force Johnson to seek a three month extension to the Brexit deadline, currently due to expire on October 31.

21 Conservative MPs defied Johnson to back the bill this week, leading the prime minister to expel them from the party.

Johnson is also expected to lose a third vote on Wednesday evening calling for an early general election.

Asked what he thought of Johnson's progress so far, Trump told reporters that "Boris knows how to win. Don't worry about him, he's going to be okay."
