"We have been informed by Oscar's family that he was admitted to the hospital on Thursday and we will provide further details as appropriate," the company said in a statement. "In the meantime, we are continuing to operate normally."

The recently appointed CEO is currently in a Chicago-area hospital, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier.

According to the report, United's board members are awaiting news of the severity of the heart attack to determine whether an interim CEO will be required.

Munoz joined United Airlines as its president and CEO in September after former chief executive Jeff Smisek resigned as a result of a federal corruption investigation.

Prior to joining United, Munoz served as president and COO of CSX Corporation - a freight transportation company.

Shares of United Continental Holdings are trading down nearly 3% on the news.
