After a decent start, Asus has somewhat lost its footing in the smartphone space. And what do you do when you have to make a return into such a crowded space? You launch something eccentric, of course.

Following gaming stalwart Razer and smartphone giant Xiaomi, Asus announced a new 'gaming smartphone’ in the country on Monday. To be sold under its Republic of Gamers brand, the phone is simply called the ROG Phone.

Built for gaming, the phone has a stealthy gaming laptop-like design. Things look different here, to say the least. But though the design is distinct, what makes this phone truly unique is that it has vapour chamber cooling inside.

This is a version of the technology Asus uses on its GL752 gaming laptop, and it allows the phone to provide high performance for longer periods. Since smartphones generally slow down as their processors heat up, faster cooling can help keep things smooth for longer.

As a gaming phone, Asus is throwing the kitchen sink at this. Vapour chamber cooling is accompanied by a 90Hz, 1080p AMOLED display with 1ms response time.

The AMOLED panel ensures crisp colours, while 1080p is the optimal resolution for high frame rate gaming. It's all really geeky.

In fact, Asus says it has worked with Qualcomm to get an overclocked version of its most powerful chipset, the Snapdragon 845. That's the same processor that runs on premium phones today, but it can run faster (at 2.9GHz) on the ROG Phone.
