The European Union is gearing up for countermeasures in response to US President Donald Trump's announcement of 20% tariffs on imports from the bloc, deemed a “major blow to the world economy.” As the EU remains the largest single market for US goods, this decision has raised significant concerns. Ursula von der Leyen, head of the EU's executive arm, expressed regret over the tariffs, warning they will have immediate repercussions on global trade and economic stability.

Trump trade war: US President announces 26% of 'discounted reciprocal tariff' on India

US President Donald Trump announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs on the trading partners of the world's largest economy on April 2. Trump's ‘Liberation Day’ announcements had no country-specific exclusions as he announced new tariff rates for more than 180 countries. Apart from country-specific tariffs, Trump also announced the imposition of a 10 per cent baseline tariff. He announced a 26 per cent reciprocal tariff on India—half the rate India imposes on US imports. Besides, Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on automobile imports to the country, which is likely to impact auto stocks such as Tata Motors and Samvardhana Motherson.

Trump justifies 34% additional Tariff on China: 'US can no longer produce enough antibiotics to…'

United States President Donald Trump announced 34 per cent tariffs on Chinese imports on Wednesday, unveiling them as part of a sweeping “Liberation Day” package aimed at reshaping American trade policy. “China firmly opposes the move and will take resolute countermeasures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” China’s ministry of commerce said in a statement hours later on Thursday morning. “The so-called ‘reciprocal tariffs’ have violated international trade rules and undermine the legitimate rights and interests of relevant parties, and are a typical act of unilateral bullying,” it added. China charged tariffs of 67 per cent to the US, noting that the figure included the effects of currency manipulation and trade barriers, he said. The new 34 per cent tariffs on Chinese imports reflect a 10 per cent universal baseline plus 24 per cent specific to the country. The 10 per cent will come into effect on April 5 while the higher reciprocal tariffs will take effect on April 9.

LIVE | Australian PM Anthony Albanese reacts to Trump's reciprocal tariffs: 'Not an act of a friend'

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Thursday (April 3) that the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs was not "the act of a friend," but ruled out placing reciprocal tariffs against the United States. Trump said on Wednesday (April 2) that he would impose a 10% baseline tariff on all imports and higher duties on some of his country's biggest trading partners, in a move that ratchets up a trade war that Trump kicked off on his return to the White House. "The (Trump) administration's tariffs have no basis in logic, and they go against the bases of our two nation's partnership. This is not the act of a friend," Albanese told reporters.

LIVE | US Senate to vote on resolution to undo Trump’s Canada tariffs

This move is expected to draw some Republican support in that chamber but will fall flat in the House of Representatives. Trump rolls out reciprocal tariffs on allies, adversaries: China 34%, India 26%, EU 20%

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday (April 2) he is imposing reciprocal tariffs to match duties put on U.S. goods by other countries, in a move that ratchets up a trade war that he kicked off on his return to the White House. "Reciprocal. That means they do it to us, and we do it to them," Trump said. "Very simple. It can't get any simpler than that." The sweeping duties would erect new barriers around the world's largest consumer economy, reversing decades of trade liberalization that have shaped the global order. Trading partners are expected to respond with countermeasures of their own that could lead to dramatically higher prices for everything from bicycles to wine.

Israeli PM Netanyahu announces new ‘Morag’ security corridor across Gaza to pressure Hamas

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that Israel is establishing a new security corridor across the Gaza Strip to pressure Hamas, suggesting it would cut off the southern city of Rafah, which Israel has ordered evacuated, from the rest of the Palestinian territory. The announcement came after Netanyahu's defence minister said that Israel would seize large areas of Gaza and add them to its so-called security zones. A wave of Israeli strikes, meanwhile, killed more than 40 Palestinians, including several women and children, according to Palestinian health officials. Israel has vowed to escalate the nearly 18-month war with Hamas until the militant group returns dozens of remaining hostages, disarms and leaves the territory. Israel ended a ceasefire in March and has imposed a monthlong halt on all imports of food, fuel and humanitarian aid.
